Origin:<br />
Open pollinated seedling of a northern Minnesota source. Discovered in<br />
a seedling population by Dr. Wilbert Ronald of Jeffries Nurseries Ltd.<br />

Growth Rate: A vigorous growth rate that compares to Patmore <strong>Ash</strong>. <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Blaze</strong> ®<br />
hardens off earlier in the fall than any existing White <strong>Ash</strong> cultivar.<br />

Description: The foliage quality is outstanding on <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Blaze</strong> ® . The leaf is 20%<br />
larger than Patmore <strong>Ash</strong> and the attractive, dark green leaf colour is<br />
maintained throughout the growing season. The growth habit is an oval<br />
shape during the juvenile stage, developing an open, round- topped<br />
crown at maturity. <strong>Northern</strong> <strong>Blaze</strong> maintains a central leader and an<br />
even distribution of branches. New twig growth is dark reddish-purple.<br />

Culture:<br />
Grows well in full sunlight to partial shade in a variety of textured soils<br />
on a range of dry and moist sites. Same requirements as Green <strong>Ash</strong>.<br />

Pest and Disease: High resistance to ash plant bug and ash flower gall mite.<br />

Landscape Value:<br />
Excellent shade tree in residential, downtown and commercial plant<br />
ings, where outstanding foliage is required. It adds a new species of ash<br />
for northern gardens and boulevards. It has proven hardy in two of the<br />
coldest winters in Manitoba.<br />
