The Importance of Interfaith Dialogue
We live in extraordinary times: the opportunities for interfaith
dialogue, for true insight and understanding between Jews and non-Jews
alike are as strong and vibrant as perhaps they have ever been in all of
recorded human history. Furthermore, for those of us who live here, in
Nashville, the buckle of the Bible belt, there is a sincere desire on the
part of members of the Christian community to understand the Jewish
roots of their faith.
Rabbi Schiftan
We have always made this a high priority at The Temple. It is
part of the proud contribution of Reform Judaism, the explicit goal of
building bridges of understanding while seeking to tear down barriers of misunderstanding.
To that end, in the past few years we have continued to offer our Taste of Judaism series
every summer. In the past year, we began a Conversion Conversations Class, in which two dozen
students now regularly study towards a path for conversion. In this past year, we have had a
series of classes with Immanuel Baptist Church (more of these will follow in the spring). In this
bulletin you will nd once again, our annual three-part lecture series designed for interfaith study,
taught by Professor A.-J. Levine.
Many of you have asked, in this light, that we reprint my article from the opinion page of
the Tennessean, which ran on the rst night of Hanukkah. We do so with great pleasure here, in
the hopes that you might choose to share it with your neighbors as well.
Rabbi Schiftan
What would Jesus, the Jew, do? Or more speci cally, what would Jesus, the Jew, have done,
on the 25 th of December, in his ancestral homeland, the Land of Israel?
The answer, most likely, is not too much. It would have been his birthday, of course; but
other than that, it would’ve been a normal day.
Christmas, of course, as we know it today, emerged as a sacred holiday for Christians only
after Jesus’ life, and death.
But what would Jesus, the Jew, have done on the 25 th of Kislev, the Hebrew month that
includes the darkest of winter days, and nights? That is a different story.
Jesus, the Jew, would’ve recognized that date as the rst day of Hanukkah.
Jesus, the Jew, would’ve celebrated the importance of that day, and all the days, and nights,
of that winter Festival of Lights, because they served to remind his people of the importance of
religious freedom, and the value of religious pluralism, for all the faithful followers, of all faiths.
But, without a doubt, he and his followers would’ve known about the courage of a group of
their ancestors, called the Maccabees, who defended the Temple, and puri ed it after its liberation.
He and his followers would’ve known about the miracle of a single cruze of oil, which, according
to legend, kept the Eternal Light of the Temple alive long enough for new oil to be brought to
Jerusalem, to continue to keep the ame ablaze, even against the darkest of winter nights.
And, without a doubt, Jesus and his fellow Jewish followers, would have treasured the
value of their religious liberty and freedom, as symbolized in the victory of the Maccabees, and as
relayed to them (and to us) through the message of the story of Hanukkah.
And, without a doubt, the early Christians would’ve treasured it as well.
At this season, as our Christian friends prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, and the
birth of Christianity, we would ask that they remember to celebrate, and to honor, the faith
traditions of their non-Christian neighbors, as well.
Ours is a city, and a state, and a nation, comprised of Christians and Jews, of Buddhists and
Hindus, of Muslims and Bahai, and even of those of no faith tradition or belief.
What would Jesus, the Jew, do? He would treasure the Divine image he believed was
contained in every human soul, and value the freedom of religious expression, which he fought
for in his day, as well.
And that is perhaps the greatest gift of the holiday season, whether that gift is to be found
under the tree, or under the menorah, or anywhere under the heavens. At this season, it is that
gift that matters most.
Get on Board
As I write this article I think back on a few of our special December events. On Sunday,
December 4 we hosted a new member brunch. The 50 new members who attended were able
to learn more about various aspects of The Temple from the clergy, of cers and the membership
chairs. I would like to thank Nancy Richardson, along with Co-Chairs Anne Slosky, Nina Harris and
Chris McPherson for coordinating this program. During Shabbat Services on December 16th we
celebrated an early Chanukah as the Junior Choir and Dennis Scott led us in Chanukah songs. The
Chapel was full, and as I looked around I felt so proud to see so many families attending. Afterwards
Randy Goldstein
a Chanukah dinner complete with Goldie’s latkes was enjoyed by everyone.
As the end of December approaches we begin to think about the New Year. Please
consider attending a Friday night Shabbat or one of the many programs your Temple offers. You can bring your family for
a Shabbat dinner or celebrate a birthday with your Temple family. In January please join us as we co-sponsor with West
End Synagogue an Adult Lecture Series with A.-J. Levine. On January 13 th we hope you can join us for our Social Action
Shabbat.
During the December Board Meeting the Board of Trustees adopted a resolution submitted by the Development
Committee that establishes two new funds and expresses the Board of Trustees overall support of an exciting new
development plan. Our two newest funds are the Legacy Annual Giving Fund & the Greatest Need Fund. The Legacy
Annual Giving Fund will allow you the opportunity to establish an individual fund that will endow your annual gift. The
Greatest Need Fund will provide the greatest exibility to respond to our Temple’s changing needs and any amount can
be given to support this fund. We will be sharing these plans in more detail in the upcoming year. We will be sharing
these plans with you during the upcoming year. I would like to thank Cindy Stone and Carol Smith, Development Co-
Chairs along with Erin Zagnoev for their work in creating a plan that focuses on the implementation and structure of our
planned giving program, the ultimate goal of which is to strengthen The Temple’s Endowment through increased member
participation and giving.
As your President, I spend quite a bit of time at Temple and thinking about Temple. I spend time talking with the
staff and try to make myself available to our Temple family. If you have a question regarding Temple life or an idea you
would like to pass along, please call me. Your committee chairs and volunteers work to make Temple a better place.
Please consider joining a committee and volunteering your time.
Finally, our Annual Giving Campaign ends this month. If you haven’t returned your card please do so. If you have
any questions regarding your dues please do not hesitate to let me know.
Cantorial Search Committee News
By Patty Marks
The important work of this committee continues, and it is all very exciting! Having submitted our application
to the American Conference of Cantors, we are now at the important step of receiving and evaluating resumes and
personal statements from a wide range of candidates from all over North America.
We have been conducting telephone interviews with those candidates we feel could be a good t for our
congregation. From those interviews, we will ask for samples of the candidates’ music, as well as their references. After
any further telephone interviews we feel we need, the next step will be to bring a candidate(s) to Nashville for an inperson
interview. The intention is, of course, to narrow the eld as we move through the process. My co-chair, Jessica
Viner, and I are proud of how this committee has conducted the business at hand. And we are grateful for the support
of the congregation.
Jewish Meditation Practices for
Meeting God and Being Godly
Like almost all religions Judaism has its public and private faces.
The public face focuses on mitzvot and communal worship.
The private face focuses on your personal encounter with the Divine.
In this two-seminar series Rabbi Rami will introduce us to several Jewish
meditation practices--chanting the 13 Attributes of God,
reciting the Sh’ma, and isolating oneself with God--
and help us design our own Jewish practice for God-encounter.
Social Action Allocation Highlight: Better Decisions
Each month we will highlight an organization
which receives funds through The Temple’s Social Action
Allocations.
Twice a year, Better Decisions offers an eightweek
program that utilizes a structured curriculum to
teach decision-making skills to women incarcerated
at the Tennessee State Prison for Women in Nashville.
Their goal is to equip each inmate student with the tools
that will help her learn to make good decisions while
incarcerated, and to accept the responsibility of building
Each year, the Social Action Allocations sub-
Committee sends Requests for Proposals to community
organizations which meet our guidelines, and then
evaluates the resulting proposals. Recommendations are
approved by the Social Action Committee, and then by
the Board of Trustees, for allocations to be made from
funds earmarked for Social Action.
In 2012, twelve agencies—including our own
Room in the Inn—will receive a total of $15,000. At
Room in the Inn
We’re once again hosting 10-12 ladies each Monday
evening until the last Monday in March.
We could very much use travel-size shampoos,
conditioners, etc., as well as feminine hygiene products.
Please bring to Temple and drop off in the little kitchen
next to Meeting Rooms A & B.
Contact the of ce if you’d like to volunteer to
help or to provide dinner.
a stable, productive future for herself and her children
once she is released. Since 1999, Better Decisions has
depended upon the support from the Social Action
Allocations to offset printing costs for the manual used
to train volunteer mentors, and the 55-page student
materials are essential for program delivery. We are also
Teaching and Learning Between
Congregants and Students - A Big Hit
As we continue to learn from and about
the many different aspects of our Congregation
through our theme of The Second Year of The
Temple Community, in our classrooms we are also
continuing to learn about our traditions. Below
is an example from our 4 th grade of their study
of how traditions are created in a family through
the study of life cycles and holiday celebrations.
Our 4 th graders studied about death and dying.
As part of their study they thought about what
they would want said about them in a Eulogy.
My Eulogy
I was proud of my life. I was a great daughter,
mother and grandmother. I had 3 children
named Joanie, Miley and Scott. I had 2 dogs
which my children loved. I will always remember
my husband William. I had 6 grandchildren
over all. I owned a summer house in Florida. I
lived in Maine. I randomly had braces when I
was 17. I became a famous singer and dancer.
I spoke 6 different languages. I graduated from
Princeton University. I wrote a book called
“Why Chances”. I loved my life.
Kindergarten students learn to play
dreidel with their teacher, Amy.
First graders meet with
Rabbi Schiftan to ask the question,
“What does a Rabbi Do?”
Third graders take canned food and
a check down to Second Harvest
and sorted 5,000 lbs. of food.
Second graders meet with Robb McCluskey to hear about our Room in the Inn
program. They decorated special tote bags and lled them with food.
Developmentally Appropriate Art in the Preschool
The Temple Preschool has been invited to be the
featured artists for the month of January. This will be
the rst time that our Temple congregation has had the
opportunity to view our youngest population’s artistic
explorations and creative “masterpieces.” When viewing
younger children’s art, it is appropriate to realize that
creative thinking and expression is preferred over “staying
in the lines.”
Today, with the success of the Reggio Emilia
approach to early childhood education, there is a growing
interest in integrating art and learning, using a variety of
media. In preschools of Reggio Emilia, a town in northern
Italy, children spend a portion of their day immersing ideas
from their own experiences into different forms of art
media. The arts are integrated into the school program to
reinforce concepts, and their art products are considered
to represent aspects of their learning. One of the more
creative aspects to come from the Reggio Emilia approach
is to document the child’s own words along with the
artwork. This can reinforce the image or the ideas that the
child had while completing the process.
When given the assignment of creating a piece of
art to display for The Temple, no parameters or directions
were given to the classrooms. There might be a group
collage, or tiny handprints, or maybe a work in nger paint
or oil displayed on canvas. Whatever might appear, our
hope is that it will be independent, creative, and an example
of expression from our artists. While viewing the displays,
keep in mind that we intentionally move away from art that
is solely created to be “cute” and “cookie cutter” friendly
to adults, to art experiences that develop and foster our
children’s individual personality.
Our children hope that you enjoy their work. Their
art will be displayed in meeting rooms “A” and “B.”
