Student Education
Awarding the best
recipient
Congratulations to the
students of 2015
How I wish I had enjoyed the same opportunities to further my
education as students are offered today.
Supported by scholarships, students are able to attend college or
university, travel, gain work experience overseas and
become immersed in their chosen area of study. Students who
are awarded scholarships are very lucky, but they must be
engaged, focused, committed and willing to work hard. To be
awarded a scholarship is a privilege and a responsibility as it
comes with expectations from the business that has chosen to invest in the recipient.
In this publication, we are highlighting the students who have been awarded
scholarships, while some are interning and being mentored. It’s encouraging to see
that some past recipients are currently enjoying successful careers with the companies
who initially awarded them a scholarship.
Parents and students will hopefully find the content inspiring and motivating as each
company highlighted on the following 24 pages has invested in local students and
made a commitment to their education.
I can’t emphasize enough to students that it’s crucial to make the effort to research
scholarships, complete each application form carefully, answer each question
thoughtfully, don’t rush the answers. Never lose sight of the fact that this is a wonderful
opportunity to grab the attention of the scholarship committee and could ultimately
result in financial assistance for their education.
I encourage parents to assist their children with their research and application process;
your guidance and support are vital.
Be sure to check out our website: caymanscholarships.com that we launched in June
Over the next couple of months we’ll feature video interviews with scholarship recipients
on our website.
Good luck to all of Cayman’s students as they head off to college or university.
EY scholarship recipients
enjoy success
Ernst & Young Ltd, Cayman Islands, offer a generous scholarship up to the value of US $30,000 per annum, which is renewable for
up to 5 years, or until recipients qualify to write the US-CPA exams. Three successful EY awardees – Angela Whittaker, Shanna
Ruiz-Whittaker and Christy Gaus - share with us their experiences and career paths as inspiration to students who hope to apply
for scholarships in 2016.
Angela Whittaker, EY Audit Senior,
awarded EY scholarship in 2008
Q - Where and what did you study?
A – I pursued a combined BBA/MBA in
Accounting at Pace University located in
New York City.
Q - Now that you are a full time EY
employee, what is your career path?
A – On October 1, 2015, I will effectively be an Audit Manager.
This is yet another milestone that I’ve accomplished here at EY.
I’m currently on the path for senior management leadership
and hopefully partnership at EY.
Q - How has it changed your life being a scholarship recipient?
A – It has given me a lifetime of benefits. I’ve grown independently
from being abroad at university. Also, I have discovered myself
while gaining an understanding of a different culture. I’ve made
some lifelong friends whom could potentially be important
networking tools later down the road. This experience has given
me the necessary academic and social tools for success.
Shanna Ruiz-Whittaker, EY Audit
Manager, awarded EY scholarship
in 2006 (moving to London office in
September 2015)
Q -Where and what did you study?
A - I attended the University of Tampa
and graduated with a major in accounting
and a minor in finance.
Q -What does it mean to be an EY scholarship recipient?
A - EY is very prestigious and we have very high standards so
when I was awarded this scholarship, I felt honored and proud.
I also knew that being awarded this scholarship meant there
were standards that I would have to uphold which I took very
seriously. The firm was very supportive while I attended university
offering internships during my summer and winter breaks.
Q-What advice can you give to students applying for scholarships?
A- I would encourage students to have confidence and never
underestimate their value. If you believe in yourself, then you
won’t let anything stop you from achieving your goals. At EY
we look for people with dreams and the ambition to make those
dreams a reality.
Christy Gaus, Senior Manager,
awarded EY scholarship in 2006
company after graduation?
A- I was an intern for two summers at EY between my junior
and senior year then between graduation and beginning my
masters. I started as a Staff Accountant and have since been
promoted to Senior. I have worked on clients in the hedge fund
From Intern to Scholar
Mourant Ozannes 2015 Scholarship Recipient, Adam Barrie.
Adam Barrie is the 2015
scholarship recipient awarded
by Mourant Ozannes. Having
originally worked at Mourant
Ozannes as a Summer intern,
Adam experienced first hand
what it’s like to work in a
leading offshore law firm.
He is currently studying a 2
year Masters Conversion Law
Degree at the University of
Bristol, UK, with aspirations
to become an Attorney.
Adam shares with us his
experience, goals and advice.
Q.You were originally
a Summer Intern with
Mourant Ozannes, can you
describe this experience?
A.I was placed in the
Corporate & Funds department
where I had the opportunity
to learn about the role that
offshore jurisdictions, such as
Cayman, have as international
financial centres. I grasped a
valuable understanding of the
basic principles of formation,
structuring, and regulation of
investment funds.
Q.What are you enjoying the
most about your studies?
A.The opportunity to learn
from top legal academics who
are extremely passionate and
interested about the subjects
they teach. The ability to
engage in debates through
seminars with professors and
classmates motivates me to
be constantly engaged in the
class material.
Q.When will you graduate?
A.I will graduate in July 2016
and hope to complete my
Legal Practice Course, which
will enable me to subsequently
begin my Articled Clerkship.
Q.What are your future
career goals?
A.I hope to qualify as a
Cayman Islands Attorney
and gain practical experience
in various areas of private
practice. I’m also interested
in pursuing opportunities to
gain work experience in other
jurisdictions, such as London
and Hong Kong, as a way to
obtain valuable work and
cultural experiences abroad.
Q.What does it mean to be a
Mourant Ozannes scholarship
recipient?
A.It has truly been an
amazing experience. I’m
grateful to the firm for giving
me the opportunity to pursue
my legal education. Knowing
that I have the support of the
firm continuously motivates
me to push myself academically
and to work to my best ability.
Q.What are the expectations
of you by the Mourant
Ozannes management team?
A.I am expected to maintain a
2:1 grade average throughout
my studies and to work as an
intern during the summer.
Q.In your opinion, why
do you think Mourant
Ozannes selected you to be
their scholarship recipient
2014/15? What made you
stand out?
A.From the beginning of the
internship I demonstrated
that I was very interested and
motivated to learn as much
as I could. Along with my
internship experience, my
academic record and
extra-curricula activities
helped provide the credentials
the firm wanted for a successful
scholarship candidate.
Q.What advice can you give
to students applying for
scholarships?
A.Aim to be as well rounded
as possible and to focus on
achieving a strong academic
performance as well as taking
part in various extra curricular
activities. Applying for internships
and taking on various
summer jobs can provide you
with valuable experience that
will make you stand out from
the other applicants.
Learn, train and grow with us. At Mourant
Ozannes we are committed to the community
and as part of that commitment we recognize
that the young students of today will become
the future leaders of tomorrow. We believe that
graduate support doesn’t just start with what
happens after you finish school, but rather
years before through our summer intern programmes,
our scholarship offerings and postschool
training contracts.
Who are we? Mourant Ozannes opened its
doors in Cayman in 2004, however our history
spans back 170 years, to the opening of our
first office in 1842 in St. Peter Port, Guernsey and
we’ve grown to become one of the largest leading
offshore firms in the world. With offices in the
BVI, Cayman, Guernsey, Hong Kong, Jersey and
London, our trainees have an impressive depth
of resources, people and offices to explore and
learn in.
Let us help you. Our Summer Intern Programme
runs yearly from 1 June to the end of August, and
is designed to give 12 students the opportunity to
work within different practice areas during their
three to six week paid internship. Students will
work alongside lawyers, managers and operation
specialists in Litigation, Funds, Finance, Corporate
Services, Business Development (Marketing)
or Operations. The programme incorporates trips
to court, research, drafting and transactional
tasks including workshops designed to bring to
life some of the skills needed to work within the
legal services industry.
From Intern to Scholarship Student. The
Chantal Whittaker Memorial Scholarship was
established to honour Chantal Whittaker, a former
employee who demonstrated a personal commitment
to mentoring, fostering community spirit and
helping young people succeed. Our scholarship
programme is designed to assist students that
wish to pursue a law degree or the PPC/LPC
qualification in Cayman or overseas. Like Chantal,
applicants must be motivated, enthusiastic
and ambitious.
The current 2014/15 Scholarship recipient is
Adam Barrie (pictured below with Cayman Partners,
Neal Lomax, Adam Barrie, Hector Robinson and
Hayden Isbister) and he is currently undertaking
his MA in Law at the University of Bristol Law
School in the United Kingdom. Adam first joined
the Mourant Ozannes team as a Summer Intern
and he has almost completed his first year as a
Scholarship Student and is doing exceptionally
well. Mourant Ozannes congratulates Adam on all
his hard work over the past year!
From Student to Associate. Like many graduate
programmes your training doesn’t end when
you graduate from school. Our 18-month articled
clerk training programme is designed to take
you from student to associate, with personal
mentors, competitive training salaries and rotating
seats in multiple practice areas to give you
the best experience in preparation for your call
to the Bar.
an Articled Clerk, to an Associate, the possibilities
are endless. For more information on how
MINDS INSPIRED
DART’S EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMME
Minds Inspired, Dart Cayman Islands’ education initiative, provides high-achieving Caymanian students with the opportunity
to build a solid educational platform with the Minds Inspired High School Scholarship and the William A. Dart
Memorial Scholarship.
ABOUT MINDS INSPIRED
The Minds Inspired high school scholarship programme, which
was established in 2012, aims to foster academic excellence with
a focus on mathematics and science. In addition to covering school
fees, the high school scholarship provides several elements, one
of which is a work experience programme. Awardees are also
given exposure to enrichment activities designed to further
inspire and create learning opportunities. Previous years’
activities include attending SuperCamp at Brown University
(www.supercamp.com), visiting the Dart NeuroScience
(www.dartneuroscience.com) facility in San Diego, where
the scholars met with scientists. This year the scholars visited
CERN, the largest particle physics laboratory in the world,
located in Geneva, Switzerland.
The selection of the high-school scholars is carried out through
a “blind” selection process where the applicant names are kept
confidential. Information is reviewed and narrowed to five
finalists through an internal nomination process and final
selection committee, made up of eight Dart executives and
Caymanian community leaders who select their top candidates
based on academics, extracurricular activities and community
service.
The university component of the Minds Inspired programme,
the William A. Dart Memorial Scholarship, was launched in
2013 and provides funding and mentorship by Dart employees
and support to Caymanian students with exceptional academic
records attending, or about to attend, university. University-level
scholars are also provided with work experience opportunities,
where possible, related to their area of academic studies.
Selection of the W. A. Dart Memorial Scholarship is based on
academic achievement, extracurricular activities, community
service and an interview with the selection committee.
DART’S COMMITMENT TO & INVESTMENT
IN OUR YOUTH
excellence in mathematics and science is the foundation for
both academic and career success. The growth and expansion
of the Minds Inspired Educational Programme is a testament to
the Dart family’s commitment to and investment in the future
leaders of the Cayman Islands.
The Minds Inspired Annual Mathematics Challenge showcases
the programme’s support for the development of Cayman’s
youth, with a particular focus on science, technology,
engineering and mathematics (STEM). The challenge invites
high-school students from schools island-wide to participate in
an intense mathematics competition that pushes their
mathematical and problem-solving skills to new levels with
group and individual challenges.
Minds Inspired also offers scholars and students outside of its
scholarship programme the opportunity to gain hands-on experience
and develop skills which will benefit them in their studies and
future careers through its work experience programme. Each
year the Minds Inspired Work Experience Programme
welcomes approximately 40 new and returning summer interns
to the Dart group of companies.
OUR SCHOLARS
To date, the Minds Inspired Educational Programme has
awarded 14 bright, young minds with high-school and
university scholarships and these scholars’ range of
extracurricular skills, depth of knowledge and passion for
various STEM sciences continues to grow. Minds Inspired and
Getting
started –
how to select a
scholarship
By Lisa Beauchamp
Depending on the institution/business/
trust providing the scholarship, they
may take various forms. The scholarship
can be aimed at high achievers with
proven academic abilities within their
field. Or they may provide financial
assistance to those students who are
in most need. Some scholarships take
both merit and need into consideration.
Ask yourself the following questions
before you start searching for a suitable
scholarship:
-What are my goals and ambitions?
-What do I hope to accomplish with
my life?
-In my current position, what options
are available to me?
-Which colleges and universities offer
the areas of study that will help me to
achieve my goals?
-What financial assistance do I need?
(if any)
-Which scholarships are available at the
educational institutions where I wish
to study?
-Which scholarships am I eligible to
apply for?
It’s crucial to ask yourself these
questions and focus on your goals,
opportunities, completing the
applications and most of all – your studies.
Wait until March 2016 and utilize the
content in the Cayman Scholarships
Directory to seek out the scholarships
available for 2016, plus also keep
checking online at
www.caymanscholarships.com for up
scholarships.
Make Your Application
DAZZLE
By Lisa Beauchamp
Competition to win a scholarship is tougher than ever as more students are applying
for these prestigious and highly sought after awards.
What makes some students stand out more than others?
Here are some tips on staying ahead:
Get a head start – start doing your research early, don’t wait until the last minute
and rush your application.
Do your research – are you qualified for the scholarship you are applying for? Don’t
waste your time or the receiving scholarship committee’s time, if you don’t qualify.
Take your time to research which scholarships you are eligible to apply for.
Read instructions carefully – once, twice, three times. Check the requirements –
writing an essay, completing a form, a combination of both, submitting references.
If you’re unsure, ask a teacher or counselor. Make sure you understand what the
business/institution awarding the scholarship expects from you and follow those
instructions precisely.
Take your time – give your application the time, concentration and dedicated
preparation it deserves.
Check your spelling – your application represents you on paper, which means it
reflects who you are, careless spelling errors make you appear sloppy. Pay close
attention to detail. Ask a friend, parent, teacher to proof read the final version of
your application form.
Be thorough – answer every question, don’t leave any boxes blank.
Relevance – include all relevant information about your experience, your interests, and
goals, which are compatible with the scholarship on offer.
Sell yourself – highlight your strengths and accomplishments, most of all – be
yourself, honest and open.
References – ask people who know you well to write letters of recommendation.
Be sure to request that they clearly reveal in what capacity they know you.
Make a copy for yourself of your completed application.
Finally, wait patiently to be invited for an interview!

scholarship award recipient. The firm
did not have to look very far to find the
perfect candidate as Jamie Sanford is
already a member of its Trust & Corporate
Services team. Jamie has decided to further
his education and obtain a Master of
Accountancy degree. He is enrolled
in the online Master of Accountancy
programme offered by Rutgers University
and once complete he will be eligible to
enroll and sit his Certified Public
Accountant (CPA) exams.
Our previous scholarship recipients, like
many students in Cayman, have chosen
to study abroad full time directly after
completing school locally. Jamie has not
taken this path, having already completed
a Bachelor’s Degree and will obtain his
Master’s Degree online while continuing
to work. He understands the challenges
involved, but also recognises that this
approach provides him with the
advantage of unlimited access to numerous
professionals who are more than
willing to help him achieve his goals
while allowing him the flexibility of
continuing to work. This route also offers
Jamie relevant hands on work experience.
“We are excited that Jamie has chosen
this path and we hope that other young
Caymanians appreciate that there is no
one size fits all approach to furthering
their education. The firm is currently
supporting a number of employees in
obtaining professional designations
including ACCA, CPA, STEP, ICSA and
CAIA” Nicola Martyn – Senior Manager
Operations and Human Resources.
They’re delighted to have a formidable
body of support behind them when it
comes to their accounting studies and
future career paths.
“I’m guaranteed a job with an internationally
recognized accounting firm, which plays
a vital role with my growth in the public
accounting field,” says Kelsie, who is
returning to theUniversity of Tampa in
Florida in September to continue the
third year of her accounting studies.
Matthew starts this fall at New York
University Stern Business School (NYU
Stern). “My scholarship will help fund a
well-regarded education at NYU,” he said,
“which means a great deal to both me
and my family.”
Adah Grant, who begins her junior
year in spring 2015 at the University
of Tampa, also commented: “Having a
scholarship with PwC not only offers me
financial support but also allows me to
work as an intern during my summer
breaks,” she says. “This ensures that I get
the professional experience and knowledge
needed to complement my studies.”
Peter Small, PwC human capital partner,
says that the firm works closely with all
its scholarship recipients throughout their
studies to ensure that the individual
receives professional as well as financial
support.
“Our human capital team follows a buddy
system so that our recipients always have
someone at the firm with whom they can
discuss their studies. We’re proud to have
been recently recognized globally as the
world’s most attractive professional services
firm employer for business students.”
Kelsie, Matthew and Adah make up just
with the firm.
“The environment at PwC is extremely
welcoming, friendly and sociable,”
William says, “and has helped to erase
any preconceived, stuffy accountant
stereotyping that I may have had. My
scholarship and internship at PwC have
helped me develop a broad understanding
of the profession.”
Peter says that PwC is delighted to be able
to offer scholarships to such enthusiastic and
hardworking young people and adds:
investing in people is the best way to
achieve both these goals. It’s important
for us to create leaders at all levels of the
AWARDING THE BEST CANDIDATE
By Lisa Beauchamp
The criteria for judging scholarship applications varies from
company to company. There is no single method that can be
revealed, every scholarship selection committee will be different.
However, here are some common practices:
Process of elimination – the first step is to eliminate the
applicants who do not qualify. There may be an internal
check- list in place which will reject incomplete forms,
application forms with spelling errors, and those submitted
without specific support material -references/photos/essays.
Comparisons – if you’ve made it through the first round of
scrutiny, then the pressure has now increased. Your
application will be processed and compared to others.
Depending upon the goals of the scholarship, academic
achievements may not be the deciding factor. If they are,
then this is where the highest achievers will go to the top of
the list. If not, this is the time for your unique personality to
shine through on your application form.
to a person worthy of their investment. They will gravitate
towards candidates who convey academic success, leadership
skills, participate in community service and show initiative.
The judges need to feel a connection with you on paper.
Selecting a winner - if you’ve made it through to the final
short list, then it’s your time to dazzle in person at an
interview. You’ll be assessed as to why you are better than the
other candidates, why do you deserve the financial support/
money, what makes you so special. The judges need to feel a
connection with you in person.
Judges’ decision – it may take the judging committee hours
or days or weeks to make their final decision.
Be patient while you wait. Remain focused on your studies,
and if you are not selected, don’t lose faith in yourself;
re-assess your options and don’t give up. Seek advice from
your teachers and counselors.
Subjective – the judges are looking to award their scholarship
For those of you who are winners – congratulations.
