THE NEW JERSEY SKI COUNCIL
Purpose: The Council was formed in November 1939 to promote amateur
skiing, assist in the development of new clubs, sponsor and run inter-club competition,
and generally to promote club activity in skiing. It is incorporated as a
“corporation not for profit” in New Jersey.
Membership: The New Jersey Ski Council does not discriminate on the basis of
race, color, national, or ethnic origin in club membership or any sponsored activity.
Club membership is available to any active organized ski club in the State of New
Jersey and adjacent areas upon application and meeting certain requirements
(By-Laws, membership list, and council meeting attendance). Contact any Council
Officer for information.
Meetings: Each member club elects or appoints a representative to the Council,
who has one vote at general meetings. Individual club members are also encouraged
to attend Council meetings. Regular meetings of the Council are held the
second Monday of each month September through May at the American Legion
Hall, Clark, New Jersey, at 7:00 pm.
Directions: From Garden State Parkway North, take exit 135 and bear right off
Rahway). Continue around circle under the GSP and take first right to Brant Ave.
Take Brant Ave to end and make a left at the light onto Westfield Ave. Continue
Welcome to The Winter
Season of 2010-2011
Welcome to the New Jersey Ski Council! Now that fall is upon us, an exciting new
season awaits winter sports enthusiasts. The anticipation of skiing or riding at our favorite
resort is already sensed as we await the first snowfall. This issue of the Council’s
Guidebook will provide you with many outstanding opportunities to get out and enjoy
a great sport, meet super people, and have a whole lot of fun doing it! As a member of
a ski club and a Council Officer for many years, I’m delighted to introduce you to our
member clubs and provide you with information about our great organization.
The New Jersey Ski Council has been serving clubs for over 70 years and is over
12,000 skiers and boarders strong. We kick off the season with our annual Jamboree,
and throughout the season we support our clubs by providing safety information, substantial
lift ticket discounts, an early season tune-up day, annual trips to major domestic
and overseas ski destinations, and an organized race program. As a member of the
National Ski Federation, we are also able to offer many additional benefits.
Council clubs are diverse and offer benefits for all. Whether a beginner or expert, single,
married, or with a family, you will find the right club to share your enthusiasm. If you
have been away from skiing for awhile, this is a great way to get back into the sport. In
addition to skiing and snowboarding, most of our clubs offer four-season activities and
many provide interesting travel opportunities. Many clubs own or rent lodges near the
major Eastern ski areas providing lodging at a fraction of the cost of staying at a commercial
property or owning your own vacation home. You are sure to find a club in your
area ready to welcome you to join in the camaraderie that ski club membership offers.
On behalf of the Council, I want to thank the mountain resorts, retailers, and tour
operators for the generous support that made this publication possible. The Council will
strive to maintain the strong partnerships and cooperation that we have developed over
the years. We will also remain committed to support organizations that provide opportunities
for disabled skiers and boarders, such as Vermont Adaptive Ski and Sports, the
Adaptive Sports Foundation, and the Wounded Warriors Project.
I personally want to recognize and thank the people who serve on the Council’s Executive
Board and Committees, along with the dedicated volunteers who preside over our
member clubs. They are the reason the New Jersey Ski Council clubs have thrived
for so many years. I also want to extend an invitation to any organized winter sports
club to contact me or a member of the Executive Board to learn more about joining the
Council.
Have a great season and stay safe on the snow!
SKIER’S RESPONSIBILITY
CODE
There are elements of risk in skiing and snowboarding that
common sense and personal awareness can help reduce.
1. Always stay in control, and be able to stop or avoid
other people or objects.
2. People ahead of you have the right of way. It is
your responsibility to avoid them.
3. You must not stop where you obstruct a trail or are
not visible from above.
4. Whenever starting downhill or merging into a trail,
look uphill and yield to others.
5. Always use devices to help prevent runaway
equipment.
6. Observe all posted signs and warnings. Keep off
closed trails and out of closed areas.
7. Prior to using any lift, you must have the knowledge
and ability to load, ride, and unload safely.
Learn to Teach, or Learn
to Ski or Ride Like a Pro!
Do you wish you could glide down the hills or through
the moguls and fresh powder like the pros you see
while riding the lift? Do you wonder what secret gift
or talent makes it so easy for them?
It’s no secret, and you have the talent!
The fact is, you can become a better
skier or snowboarder by learning and
applying certain basic skills.
You can learn these skills by joining
the Amateur Ski Instructors Association
(ASIA) and taking our Alpine or
Snowboard Teaching Certification.
Don’t want to teach? That’s OK, join
us for one of our many fun, two day,
on snow instruction programs.
ASIA is a non-profit, professional
snowsports organization formed in
1980 and run by its membership.
We’ve trained and certified thousands
of ski club members like you. ASIA is
a member school of the Professional
Ski Instructors of America (PSIA), just
like most mountain schools, and offers
top quality, professional instruction at
a very reasonable cost to members.
Folks participate in the four day ASIA
Teaching Certification programs to
learn to teach others, then volunteer
their time in a structured club, church,
or school instruction program.
Many folks use ASIA Certification as
a first step toward becoming a member
of PSIA without having to join
a mountain ski school. Still others
use the program simply to drastically
improve their skiing or riding, as well
as their understanding the sport.
Everyone looks forward to the fun,
camaraderie and learning opportunities
our programs provide.
It’s easy to become an ASIA member!
Just go to www.asiaski.org, download
our membership application, and mail
it to ASIA with your dues of $25.00.
To take a program, check the ASIA
schedule for an event near you.
Download the program application,
mail it to the ASIA office with your
check for the program fee, and start
looking forward to the season when
you learn to ski or ride like the pros!
Come ski
and ride
with ASIA!
2010 NJ Ski Council Jamboree
Supports Adaptive Sports
The New Jersey Ski Council Jamboree, a Council tradition, is held during the fall of each
year. The Jamboree is a combination trade show, trip planning event, membership drive,
and ski season kick-off party. It is a great opportunity for winter sports enthusiasts to
meet with representatives of local and national ski areas and to learn what is new in the
ski industry. The Council’s clubs are also at the Jamboree to introduce themselves and
to tout the advantages of club membership.
A key element of our Jamboree tradition is supporting ski-related charities. Monies raised
through raffles and auctions are customarily donated to adaptive sports programs. In
2010, the Council contributed to the Adaptive Sports Foundation at Windham, New York;
Vermont’s Adaptive Ski & Sports (VASS); and the Wounded Warriors Project.
These programs are committed to furthering the equality and independence of individuals
with disabilities by providing access to sports and recreational opportunities. They
believe that sports and recreation provide a physical, mental, and social experience that
is immeasurable in promoting self-confidence and independence in an individual.
VASS offers year round programs and activities throughout Vermont. In addition to skiing,
their programs offer opportunities to participate in sports that include cycling, sailing,
canoe/kayak outings, horseback riding, and indoor climbing. Their administrative offi ces
are located at Pico Mountain, Killington, Vermont.
Windham’s Adaptive Sports Foundation also provides four season instruction and recreational
activities for individuals with special needs. The Adaptive Sports Foundation is
the largest adaptive sports program on the East Coast and one of the leading programs
in the country. Their programs have served thousands who are cognitively or physically
impaired since 1984. Their center is located at Windham Mountain, New York.
The Wounded Warriors Project partners with adaptive sports programs throughout the
country to meet the needs of severely injured service men and women. Ski resorts hold
numerous events each winter hosting the Wounded Warriors.
If you would like to volunteer, make a donation, or learn more about these programs,
All of the above racers/teams received plaques or trophies for their efforts. In addition, to make the races more fun and
interesting, other prizes were awarded lottery style to anyone participating in the specific race. In other words, a person
who finished last in the race had just as much a chance of winning a prize as the person who finished first. These prizes
consisted of goggles, tuning equipment, boot bags, fanny packs, hats, gloves, etc. Also, participants in the State Race
received a T-shirt and participants in the Stanley Sharaga Memorial President’s Race received a racing photograph of
themselves. This season (2010 - 2011) plans for the same races are in the process of being formulated. These tentative
dates and venues are as follows:
STATE RACE: February 5, 2011 at Pico, Vermont
CONSOLATION RACE: January 20, 2011 at Hidden Valley, New Jersey (Rain date: January 27, 2011)
PRESIDENT’S RACE: March 19, 2011 at Hunter Mt., New York
WEDNESDAY NIGHT RACE LEAGUE: January 5 to February 9, 2011 at Hidden Valley, New Jersey (There are make-up
dates and/or non-NJSC races in this schedule.)
This year it is hoped to have prizes awarded lottery style to all participants as we did last year. The program is open
to all individuals who are a member in good standing of a club in the NJSC. All categories of racers (beginner to expert)
are welcome to come out and improve their skiing ability and have fun at the same time. Any questions on the
program should be addressed to: Karen Sanderson, NJSC Race Chairperson, 2-7 Crescent Drive, Thiells, NY 10984.
THE 2010 NJ SKI COUNCIL STANLEY SHARAGA
MEMORIAL PRESIDENT’S RACE
The 2010 NJSC Stanley Sharaga Memorial President’s Race was held on March 20, 2010, at
Hunter Mt. Ski Bowl and was again a great success with eight clubs represented. The race had
a total of 130 racers. The race was run on the Madison Avenue Racing Trail. The Hunter Racing
Foundation once again provided a great course. This year, the scoring was done the same
as last year. The racer’s best handicap was used to get a score. Results for men and women
were ranked from lowest to highest handicap and divided into three equal groups. Points were
awarded within each group starting at 30 on down. The team score was based on the top four
men’s point and top three women’s point scores. In this way clubs with the not as good racers
had an equal shot at winning the race and the more racers a club had the better chance to win.
Top team awards were: 1st - Trailsweepers, 2nd – Garden State, and 3rd – High Life. This year
there was a tie for third place between High Life and Ramapo. The tie was broken by taking
the next women’s and men’s point scores and adding them to the total. High Life took third
place by three points. The individual scoring was again divided into thirds with awards for Class
A, B, and C racers. The women’s Class A winner was Sharon Vinsick, with second place going
to Melanie Foy, and third place won by Millie Bailey, all from Trailsweepers. The men’s Class A
winner was Yuri Kobziar, followed by Tyler Bailey, both from Trailsweepers and Doug Carpenter
from High Life. The Class B men’s and women’s winners were Dan Rosen of Garden State and
Aleksa Maz of Craigmeur. Ken Krupa of Ramapo and Gail Brunner of Garden State took second
place, with third place going to Howie McArthur of Ramapo and Amy Parker of Trailsweepers.
The Class C winners were Janet Minn of Trailsweepers and Ken Heller of Hudson Valley. Second
place went to Lorrie Vece from High Life and Bob Reich of Ramapo, with third place going to
Lisa Bukuvalas of Ski Bums and George Hulsair of Trailsweepers.
The junior racers were divided into two age groups. For teen girls, the winner was Elissa Antelman
of Ramapo. For teen boys, the winner was Kealey Viglielmo of Trailsweepers, followed by
Scott Wingard from Trailsweepers. For pre-teen girls, the winner was Shannon Connelly of Ramapo,
followed by Alyssa Brown of Ramapo, and Katie Viglielmo of Trailsweepers. For pre-teen
boys, the winner was Andrew Heydt, followed by Griffin Connelly, both from Ramapo, and Jake
Yombor from Craigmeur.
Many thanks to all the people who helped organize and run this race. The purpose of the Stanley
Sharaga Memorial President’s Race is to bring members of the NJSC together in a friendly
and competitive environment. The race is open to skiers of all ages and abilities, including children.
Trophies and prizes are awarded at the end of the day. In addition to individual and team
awards, there is a lottery style drawing for prizes which is open to any racer who has completed
at least two gates. Prizes are provided by ski areas, retailers, and manufacturers.
Next year’s race will again be hosted by the NJSC Race Committee and is scheduled for March
19, 2011, at Hunter Mountain.
