TZURI GUETA
TZURI
GUETA
Designer, artist, craftsman, scientist, explorer,
Tzuri Gueta is a hard man to label.
After earning a degree in textile engineering
at Shenkar College in Israel, Tzuri Gueta
arrived in Paris in 1996 and went to work
for Trend Union, a trend forecasting
agency founded by the legendary
priestess of style Li Edelkoort.
Then he met Thierry Mugler. It was the
first step on the way to success and a
real interchange developed between the
two men. Since then, there have been
many fruitful collaborative projects with
the Haute Couture industry including the
fashion houses of Christian Lacroix,
Jean Paul Gaultier, Givenchy, Dior,
Armani and lately Chanel and Issey
Miyake.
At the same time Gueta pursued his
quest for material. One encounter was
to prove particularly decisive: silicone. It
quickly became his material of choice.
He invented a technique that he called
“lace fed with silicone” and took out a
patent for the method. Spurred on by
this impetus, he founded, with a jewelry
designer, Caroline Auraix, a company,
Silka Design, and began to produce his
own line of jewelry made of a mixture of
textile and silicone. These pieces were
imbued with such an innovative spirit
that they almost immediately won over
designers at the vanguard of fashion
as well as venues dedicated to artistic
creation, such as the Printemps du Design
boutique at the Centre Pompidou in
Paris and the MoMA store in New York.
But the sensitive, organic and futuristic
world of Tzuri Gueta is not restricted to
textiles and fashion. With the designer
Tony Jouanneau, the multi-faceted artist’s
explorations in design earned him the
Grand Prix de la Création awarded by
the City of Paris; and the adventure
continued into the territory of art with
a one-man exhibition at the Tel Aviv
Museum of Modern Art.
The latest of Tzuri Gueta’s many hats to
date is that of gallery owner. To celebrate
his tenth year in France, Gueta is opening
his own workshop cum gallery under
the arches of the Viaduc des Arts -
a prestigious place that is sure to continue
to spark enthusiasm.
