To establish a bi-county legal assistance project that would seek to<br />
prevent debt collectors from using illegal and deceptive practices<br />
to collect from low-income people, the elderly and disabled, and<br />
military personnel on active duty and their families.<br />
Special Purpose Grants for Environmental Issues<br />
Group for the East End $21,200<br />
To develop and implement a Southold Conservation Agenda<br />
designed to achieve local community and government action<br />
that will improve the protection of Southold's undeveloped land<br />
and groundwater.<br />
Nature Conservancy New York, <strong>Long</strong> <strong>Island</strong> Chapter $60,000<br />
To promote land and water preservation initiatives connected to<br />
the "<strong>Long</strong> <strong>Island</strong>'s Last Stand" campaign and to support lobbying<br />
efforts to pass the Brookhaven <strong>Community</strong> Preservation Fund in<br />
the <strong>2007</strong> general election.<br />
Neighborhood Network Research Center $24,000<br />
To support the Local Action on Global Climate Change project that<br />
works with towns to pass clean energy action plans and endorse<br />
Energy Star home standards.<br />
New York Institute of Technology $5,000<br />
To support NYIT students’ participation in the <strong>2007</strong> Solar Decathlon,<br />
a national competition in which students design, build, and operate<br />
a solar home.<br />
New York League of Conservation Voters Education Fund $20,000<br />
To support a “Sustainability/Climate Action Agenda” that includes<br />
energy policy, smart growth, transportation, environmental funding,<br />
and protection of the ocean and bays.<br />
One Region Fund $45,000<br />
To support a tri-state collaboration focused on key projects to<br />
improve the transportation systems of the New York metropolitan<br />
region, including affordable transit-centered housing.<br />
Other Special Purpose Grants<br />
Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Rockville Centre $10,000<br />
To support a Senior Response Initiative that will train volunteers to<br />
recognize the needs of frail, homebound seniors and refer them to<br />
services that will help them remain in their homes.<br />
East End Arts & Humanities Council $4,000<br />
To provide full or partial scholarships for school-aged musicians in<br />
an area with the lowest median income on <strong>Long</strong> <strong>Island</strong>.<br />
Federation Employment and Guidance Service (FEGS) $11,175<br />
To support Prison Families Anonymous, a program helping the<br />
families of incarcerated people.<br />
<strong>Island</strong> Harvest $14,000<br />
To support food rescue and emergency food distribution for the<br />
hungry and needy in Freeport.<br />
Westbury Even Start Family Literacy Program $6,700<br />
To purchase a comprehensive software program for English<br />
language learners and to help pay for instructors.<br />
