PHMOTTC Tour of a Marine Corps
KC-130J Aircraft
As the convoy of minivans approached, we
assembled at the rally point. We then assembled
on the Quarter Deck for a brief discussion on
military history and traditions. We proceeded
down a hallway filled with plaques and photos of
operations past. Everyone had a chance to try
on various bits of military personal protective
equipment. Only one was brave enough to
attempt the backpack. After which we filled
out to the aircraft with the children sprinting.
We gathered in the cargo compartment while
each family had a chance to see the displays.
Each family then had a turn to check out the
cockpit. While waiting, several children found
the cargo ramp makes a pretty good slide. We
were also enlightened about the bathroom
facilities while in flight. This seemed to be the
time when everyone added a little more
appreciation for Marines!
Hopefully everyone had fun. If
there is an interest we can try to
set up another tour in the spring.
October?! Ready or not here it is. In my family this is when it seems as if our lives (and family
calendar) become very busy. The good news is that with all of that activity comes a lot of fun stuff.
October is also a very busy and fun month for our club.
We start off the month with a trip to the Pinery Pumpkin Patch on October 10. Jacob and Matthew
love this outing. It has become a tradition in our family and we are really looking forward to going this year. There is a lot of fun
stuff happening at the pumpkin patch. We get to learn about how pumpkins grow, go on a tractor hay ride, pick out pumpkins, and
the highlight of the day is trying to make our way through the corn maze. The boys navigated us through the maze successfully
last year, so I'm hoping for a repeat this year. We also have our annual garage sale this month. This year's event will be at the
home of Jennifer and Andrew Boaz (Thank you Boaz Family!) and we really need your help to make it successful. If you have
donations, can help with set-up, selling, or clean-up please let us know. This event is approaching quickly and we really need your
help. Thank you in advance!
I am very excited about this month's speaker. On Monday October 20, Lori Rappaport, Ph.D. will be speaking to us about
Ways to Reduce Stress in Our Marriages. Dr. Rappaport is a highly sought after speaker. She has her Ph. D. from USC and did a
Pediatric Fellowship at Harvard Medical School. She has over 15 years experience working with children and families. During her
presentation she will discuss adjusting to having children, communication, and parenting issues. It will be a great opportunity to
hear some advice on how to keep your marriage strong while managing multiples and their siblings. Hope you can join us.
Last, but not least is our annual Halloween Party on Sunday, October 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This year’s festivities will be
hosted by Veronica Brown. Thank you Brown family! This is a great party for the whole family. I especially love how creative
mommies of multiples can be in making costumes. The kids like the jumpy and candy ☺
As you can tell there is a lot going on in our club. It takes the help of all of our members to make field trips, fundraising,
meetings, and parties happen. Thank you to everyone who gives so generously of their time and talents to make this club great! On
that note, we are still looking for people to fill the Publicity and Ways and Means Chairmom positions. Both positions play an
important roll in our club’s success. There is a small time commitment, but it makes a huge impact towards the success of our club.
I hope you will thoughtfully consider taking on one of these rolls.
With all of the activity going on in the club, I hope to see you at one or more of this month’s events.
Have a great October and a Happy Halloween!! ~Cathy
Schedules: Not Just for Newborns Anymore.
Jenny Gladheim
In one of the previous newsletters I submitted advice to Rene’s monthly “Twin Tips” article about the
importance of keeping a schedule when you have newborn twins. I am not inherently a schedule driven person. I
have discovered the hard way that keeping everyone on one and sticking to the same routine makes everything
run smoothly and gives us all clear expectations of what’s going to happen each day.
Recently I have had some success in this arena. Each morning the older kids wake up and know what they need to do to get
ready for school. The younger kids know that first we walk the big kids to school. Some days they go to school and they know just
which days those are because when they see their preschool buckets they ask, “Mama go bye-bye?” They know I will be dropping
them off and they’ll be staying. It has taken some time and a lot of work, but getting all the moving pieces to fit together into our
family puzzle is worth it.
Another related issue for me has been calendar anxiety. I have many different hats I wear (mom, health care manager,
project manager, chauffeur, PTA member, classroom volunteer…raise your hand if you know what I mean!), each with its own
responsibilities. So how do I keep track of them all? I’ve tried handwritten calendars, Day Runners, Google calendar, Don’t Forget
the milk.com, and post-it notes spread throughout my house. I think I have finally settled on a workable solution for our family. I
convinced myself an iPhone would help me keep my life straight. It was a great excuse to add a fun gadget to my fun gadget
collection. I now add things to the calendar on the phone or to Outlook and sync the two. Then I print a calendar to post in the
kitchen for hubby to see (where it sits forlornly, never ever viewed).
Next challenge is getting my husband to learn to look at it. A friend of mine says that she and her husband work off one
handwritten calendar. Whoever writes their date up first gets to do their thing and if there is a conflict, the second has to find a
babysitter. This sounded great for me since mine never looks at the calendar. He’d always be the one figuring out what to do with
the kids! Hmmm, wonder why he didn’t go for that idea…
From VP of Programs
Angela Caires
October is the busiest month of the year in terms of PHMOTT Club Events. What is great about it is that
everyone has a chance to get involved in lots of different ways. First, we have a Pumpkin Patch outing on
Friday, October 10 at 3:30. If you've never been to the Pinery Pumpkin Patch in Rancho Bernardo, you are in
for a treat and so are your kids! It is tons of fun with lots of great photo opportunities and stuff to do. And
you don't leave empty handed! Every child gets a coloring book, a water and a pumpkin to take home! The
following week is the Garage Sale, one of the big fundraisers for the year. The money generated from the
Garage Sale pays for our club’s administrative costs, but even more importantly, allows us to give back to the community. I
really enjoy adopting the families of multiples during Christmas time and giving to the NICU. My girls were in the NICU for 3
weeks and I will never forget that difficult time in our lives. So, please help out at the Mom's Night Out Garage Sale Prep on
Friday the 17 and the Garage Sale on the morning of Saturday the 18. Our next General and Board Meeting is on Monday,
October 20 and the Halloween Party is on Sunday the 26 from 11-1. This is another really fun event. I like having more than
one opportunity for the kids to dress up in their costumes and the kids really love the party. I hope to see each of you lots of
times during October!! ~Angela
From The Treasurer
Rene Carmichael
Thank you to everyone who provided input on organizations to consider as our club looks to invest more into
community philanthropic efforts. The next step is to finalize the club’s annual budget, which should occur at the
board meeting following the October club meeting. From that we’ll have an idea of the funds available and then
we can work on narrowing down the list of
organizations that our club will support during the
2008-2009 club year.
While we’re still a bit from getting to that point, I wanted to
share with you a couple of the organizations that were
suggested by club members:
Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome Foundation
This complication of pregnancy is the only one that affects
multiples pregnancies only. The foundation provides educational,
emotional and sometimes financial support to the diagnosed parents to help them understand the syndrome, understand where
their babies specifically are in the diagnosis of the syndrome, to create a medical plan of action to care for the babies, and
get to treatment as soon as possible.
March of Dimes
Many of our members’ pregnancies resulted in pre-term births. The March of Dimes is dedicated to improving the health of
babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth and infant mortality.
Sharing Lives Fund at RBCPC Preschool
Here's the activity for the month:
Previous Checking Acct Balance as of 8/28/08: $5,047.08
Income:
Interest: $0.25
Total Income: $0.25
Expenses: None
Checking Balance as of
9/28/08: $5,047.33
Previous & Current Savings
Acct Balance as of 9/28/08:
$2,002.73
Many club members are a part of or alumnae of the RB Community Presbyterian Church preschool program and know about the
Sharing Lives Fund. This fund gives children with disabilities the ability to “mainstream” at the preschool. It’s a unique
inclusion program that not only benefits the kids with disabilities by providing tuition assistance and additional class aides, it
benefits all of the kids who go to the preschool and in many ways benefits our community at large. Children learn how to play
and accept children who aren’t exactly like them – and hopefully that’s a life lesson that will shape their views and behavior in a
positive way for the rest of their life.
If you have an organization that you don’t see included on this list, please let me know at reneqc@san.rr.com. Some people
have a broad category of what they’d like to support, but didn’t give me much detail. I also know that there are other
organizations that club members are involved with that weren’t brought up – please don’t assume that I know that you want
your organization included on this list. Thanks for all the input so far and I look forward to all the good that we can do as a
club.
Celebrate Your Birthday at Disneyland in 2009
The Disneyland and Disney World resorts are starting a new promotion to take
advantage of the current tourism trend: celebration vacations. Starting Jan. 1,
Disneyland and California Adventure theme parks will let you in free to one of
them on your birthday. Regular admission into Disneyland is $69 for adults, and
$59 for those ages 3-9; under age three is free. If you already have a multi-day
ticket or annual pass, you can choose an "alternate birthday treat," like a gift
card, a ticket for another day or Fast passes for the rest of your group - up to six
people. The gift will be worth the value of a day pass to one park. To avoid delays
at the park, officials suggest pre-registering for the free tickets at
www.disneyparks.com . To get the free passes, park-goers must show a valid ID
for adults or notarized birth certificates for children.
September Mystery Mom Revealed
Jennifer Boaz
Member Spotlight
The first mystery mom was our one
and only former president Jennifer
Boaz. Many people know her very
well, but no one could guess she is a
vegetarian, unicycle riding swimmer!
Jennifer was born in Weisbaden, Germany – grew up in
Long Beach, and lived in Chicago for a couple years before
moving to San Diego. After getting her BA in
Communications at Cal State Long Beach, she worked at
United Airlines and at Boeing as a communications analyst.
If anyone hears of an opening with Ebert and Roeper,
Jenn dreams of being a movie or travel critic. A true
movie lover, she has several favorites including Love
Actually, Armageddon was a favorite for years, and
Shakespeare in Love . She has a family of 5 including
husband Andrew, 7 year old twins Allison and Trevor, and
their dog Bailey. In her “free time,” Jennifer enjoys
swimming, reading and walking.
The Boaz kids enjoy going to movies, museums, the pool
and the beach around San Diego. Someday Jennifer hopes
to go somewhere a bit further away like Paris, London, or
Tuscany.
Everything changed for Jenn after having twins - but
mostly her sleeping patterns! She has boy/girl twins, and
someone once said to her “Are they identical? Oh, they’re
boy/girl?! They must be paternal!” After seven years, she has
had many funny “twin moments” - one of those is when Allison
was mad that SHE doesn’t have a penis… “It’s not fair!” ☺
Someone wisely advised Jennifer “Don’t sweat the small stuff…
who cares if your house isn’t clean – your kids being happy is
more important.” She is currently seeking advice about how to
handle homework battles every day…. One LOVES homework
(the girl) one hates it (the boy).. any suggestions?
Finally, Jennifer shared an original Boaz family game creation.
We have made up some fun driving games. My kids love being
asked to make up lists. For example, while on road trips, they’ll
ask, “give us a list!” and I’ll ask each one individually, “give me
the names of 5 different trees, give me the name of three
continents, 4 states, 6 colors, 3 types of nuts, 4 girl names that
start with S, 5 types of transportation,” etc. They love this
game! And we can play it anytime, anywhere.
Thanks for sharing and continuing to give this club your time
and talents - We will see you at the garage sale later this
month. If you ever dig up the photo with Keanu Reeves, or a
video of your church choir solo, we would love to see them!
PHMOTT Newsletter October 08 Page 6
I admit it: I read the books, but I still couldn’t figure
out how to do it. I was pretty close to a straight A student in
high school and even have an MBA, but I couldn’t figure out
how to translate those Babywise and other baby magic books
to my own life. It wasn’t until I was expecting with Lindsay
that the light bulb finally clicked on.
Struggling with sleep issues, our pediatrician sat my
husband and I down at the 18-month well check for the twins
and explained that basically we’ve created a “sleep contract”
with our children. If we wanted to change the contract, it
was up to us – but the clock was ticking and it would be in our
best interest to change it before the baby was born. We
made some decisions, stuck to them and while things aren’t
perfect, we have lived more happily ever after.
I think it’s a safe bet to say that whether it’s getting
your children to sleep, getting them to stay asleep or figuring
out where they’re going to sleep, sleep is definitely a huge
issue for families with multiples. Because of that, I gathered
a lot more advice and responses from members than I can
possibly fit in this column. Below is a sampling from our club
moms, so if this leaves you wanting more, just email me at
reneqc@san.rr.com and I’ll send you the complete collection of
responses.
One big concern is always what to do when they’re crying
at night. Listening to your little ones cry isn’t
easy, but there wasn’t a single mom who
advocated not letting them cry it out. Elaine
Dobesh said that hearing her little ones cry for
a couple of weeks was torture, but “a couple of
weeks of misery was worth the sleeping
beauties I have now who sleep through the
night nearly all of the time.”
Ann Leslie offered some humorous, though pretty wise,
ideas as to how to make it through the transition. First, take
out the baby monitor (unless there's an issue with breathing/
preemies/etc).
“Trust me, if something's really wrong, you'll hear it!” she
says.
Second, get a really loud fan and put it in their room. And
finally, “Argue with your husband for 15 minutes on whose
turn it is to get the baby(ies),” she says. “By the end of the
arguing, the crying will have stopped.”
One common theme that I noticed is that in many cases,
the twins’ actions take the guess work out of what to do. On
the topic of sharing a crib, Megan Streicher said that at 2
months one of the boys made it really clear that he wanted
his own space – he kept pushing his brother off him – so they
moved them.
Heidi Snyder’s decision to move her twins into toddler
beds at the early age of 9 months was made for her as well
when they experimented with climbing out of their cribs.
Moving them to toddler beds was the safest thing to do
because “it was far less a distance to fall than from the top
lip of a crib.”
Though new moms quickly learn that each child has an
individual identity, for sanity’s sake fostering their
individuality doesn’t necessary include feeding/sleeping
schedules. Jennifer Adams said that she always woke up the
girls at the same time to feed them and eventually they did
get on the same schedule.
“If I got into a situation where I was alone and one was
crying I would place my baby infant seat on the bed next to
me, turn it on vibrate, and put one in there while I cared for
the other,” she said.
Nicole Murray is a huge believer in schedules.
“If it wasn’t time to wake up I wouldn’t pick them up if
they woke up early from a nap,” she says. “I would soothe
them by placing a hand firmly on them (this comforts
newborns) or use a pacifier, play a music box, but I wouldn’t
pick them up. Sure at times it was stressful, but the work
paid off and they slept very well and at specific times.”
Along with a schedule comes routine. And Alyssa
Navapanich says that routine has been her saving grace.
Along with the routine, each child has their "comfort thing."
Zoe likes "squish-a-foot" massages, Alec likes "itchy ear"
massages and Ian likes to have "rub-a-belly and
rub-a-back" massages.
actually want to go to bed,” she says.
She once asked her pediatrician when Alyssa
was 12 “how long do we keep tucking them in?”
And the pediatrician very sagely replied, "As long as they
need you to.”
Keeping your twins in the same room may be more about
the size of your house than your desires, but for those who
have the option, the decision may once again be made for you
by your children.
Jennifer Boaz said that one of her twins liked to fall
asleep right away and the other one liked to stay up and chat,
so separating them helped her sleepy-head.
“It still took us a while to figure out ways to keep that
night owl in bed and in his room,” she admits. Their solution:
make what’s going on outside the kids’ bedrooms is less
“intriguing” by keeping the lights low in the living room and not
turning on the TV. She and her husband use that time to talk
about their day and read. They also let him have a little light
to read or draw by because as long as he could be doing
something in bed he stayed there.
No matter what you find works best for you, Jenn had
wise words to pass along: “Be careful what you start now.
What may seem like a good idea today and tomorrow can be
the beginning of a habit that will be very hard to break.”
October -
One of my favorite months - among all of the wonderful activities
going on with back-to-school, Halloween, Homecoming, it is the birthday
month of 3 out of 4 of my kids. We seem to have celebrations going on
all month and I love the joy associated with all of them. Coral will
celebrate her sweet sixteen this year which brings tears to my eyes
just typing this. She is maturing and growing into a young lady and it
makes me very proud. Reese and Keira will be celebrating their 2nd
birthday this year - we opted not to have a big party and just celebrate
the miracle of their lives as a family. As many of you mothers of
multiples can appreciate, the girls and I went through many challenges in
pregnancy and infancy, and I see this birthday as a huge milestone for
all of us. I have so many reasons to love October!
I look forward to any excuse to dress up the kiddos in their cute
(although not too creative) costumes this year - so we are excited about
the Halloween party and the Pumpkin patch tour. Thank you to the few
people who volunteer to host and organize these events…
The Mystery Mom column has been fun for me so far and I hope
you all like it - send me your guesses and if you would like to be our next
mystery mom, please email me. pattytok@gmail.com Thanks to Jennifer
and also this month’s mom for being my “beta” subjects.
