Screening<br />
● Creates a pool of students who may or may<br />
not proceed to <strong>the</strong> referral process.<br />
● Teachers review test data with an emphasis<br />
on scores 96%+ and utilize a screening<br />
checklist of gifted characteristics.<br />
● Parents may observe gifted characteristics in<br />
<strong>the</strong>ir children at home
Characteristics of giftedness
Referral<br />
There are two referral windows:<br />
• October 1-18<br />
Referrals for grades 1 st , 3 rd , and 5 th are accepted.<br />
• January 6-24<br />
Referrals for grades Kg, 2 nd , and 4 th are accepted<br />
Any professional educator, parents, community<br />
member, peer, or student can make a referral.
How do I refer my child?<br />
● You may have observed that your child has displayed<br />
characteristics of giftedness.<br />
● You can refer your child to <strong>the</strong> gifted identification<br />
process by sending a written request to <strong>the</strong> school’s<br />
<strong>Gifted</strong> <strong>Identification</strong> Coordinator, Shannon Hodges<br />

● Remember <strong>the</strong> windows for referrals:<br />
October 1-18…1 st , 3 rd , and 5 th<br />
January 6-24…Kg, 2 nd , and 4 th
Evidence Ga<strong>the</strong>ring<br />
The following information must be ga<strong>the</strong>red and reviewed:<br />
• Parent/Guardian Questionnaire<br />
• Professional Rating Scale of <strong>Gifted</strong><br />
• Characteristics/Recommendation<br />
• Classroom grades<br />
• Standardized test scores…one score of 96% and above<br />
will be used<br />
• Three student classroom work samples in each area of<br />
referral<br />
The following information may be ga<strong>the</strong>red and reviewed:<br />
• Report of student interview/observation
Time Line and Parent Communication<br />
Grades 1 st , 3 rd , and 5 th - Students referred October 1-18<br />
● Academic Referral Form and <strong>the</strong> Parent Questionnaire<br />
are sent home by October 25, which must be signed<br />
and returned by November 8.<br />
● <strong>Process</strong> is complete and parents are notified of<br />
outcome by mid February.<br />
Grades Kg, 2 nd , and 4 th - Students referred January 6-24<br />
● Academic Referral Form and <strong>the</strong> Parent Questionnaire<br />
are sent home by February 7, which must be signed<br />
and returned by February 14.<br />
● <strong>Process</strong> is complete and parents are notified of<br />
outcome by mid April.

Services<br />
Grades Kg-3 rd<br />
• Students are clustered with o<strong>the</strong>r gifted<br />
students<br />
• Teacher differentiates instruction based on<br />
ability levels<br />
• Students receive instruction from <strong>the</strong> itinerant<br />
gifted resource teacher on a regular basis<br />
Grades 4 th and 5 th<br />
• Students are clustered with o<strong>the</strong>r gifted<br />
students in our School Based Program.
