Screening
● Creates a pool of students who may or may
not proceed to the referral process.
● Teachers review test data with an emphasis
on scores 96%+ and utilize a screening
checklist of gifted characteristics.
● Parents may observe gifted characteristics in
their children at home

Characteristics of giftedness

Referral
There are two referral windows:
• October 1-18
Referrals for grades 1 st , 3 rd , and 5 th are accepted.
• January 6-24
Referrals for grades Kg, 2 nd , and 4 th are accepted
Any professional educator, parents, community
member, peer, or student can make a referral.

How do I refer my child?
● You may have observed that your child has displayed
characteristics of giftedness.
● You can refer your child to the gifted identification
process by sending a written request to the school’s
Gifted Identification Coordinator, Shannon Hodges

Evidence Gathering
The following information must be gathered and reviewed:
• Parent/Guardian Questionnaire
• Professional Rating Scale of Gifted
• Characteristics/Recommendation
• Classroom grades
• Standardized test scores…one score of 96% and above
will be used
• Three student classroom work samples in each area of
referral
The following information may be gathered and reviewed:
• Report of student interview/observation

Time Line and Parent Communication
Grades 1 st , 3 rd , and 5 th - Students referred October 1-18
● Academic Referral Form and the Parent Questionnaire
are sent home by October 25, which must be signed
and returned by November 8.
● Process is complete and parents are notified of
outcome by mid February.
Grades Kg, 2 nd , and 4 th - Students referred January 6-24
● Academic Referral Form and the Parent Questionnaire
are sent home by February 7, which must be signed
and returned by February 14.
● Process is complete and parents are notified of
outcome by mid April.

Intellectual Identification-
● Five criteria supporting identification in English/
language arts
AND
● Five criteria supporting identification in mathematics
English/Language Arts Identification
● Five criteria to support identification
Mathematics Identification
● Five criteria to support identification

Services
Grades Kg-3 rd
• Students are clustered with other gifted
students
• Teacher differentiates instruction based on
ability levels
• Students receive instruction from the itinerant
gifted resource teacher on a regular basis
Grades 4 th and 5 th
• Students are clustered with other gifted
students in our School Based Program.
