preface
Alvin Langdon Coburn osmislio je pojam ‘apstraktne fotografije’ 1916. godine, u
jeku piktorijalizma, potaknuvši time svoje kolege na promišljanje o oslobađanju
fotografije od ‘reprezentativnosti’. Coburn je i sam eksperimentirao na temu
apstrakcije, u radovima nazvanim ‘vortografije’. Dvadesetih godina uslijedili
su vizualni eksperimenti Christiana Schada, Man Raya, Moholy-Nagya,
Györgya Kepesa, Alfreda Stieglitza, Edwarda Steichena i mnogih drugih
fotografa koji su se okrenuli nereprezentativnom izričaju. Tridesetih,
Brassaï u svojoj seriji grafita, razotkriva ekspresivnost pucajućih zidova
i fasada u raspadanju. Konačno, šezdesetih godina prošlog stoljeća, Aaron
Siskind vizualizira tanane dimenzije delikatnih tekstura svojstvenih urbanom
rada u ulicama Zagreba, njegovih nezamjećenih i zaboravljenih kutaka.
otkrivena.
Alvin Langdon Coburn coined the term ‘abstract photography‘ in 1916 during
the height of pictorialism and in doing so suggested to his piers that they
free photography from representationalism. Coburn experimented with this
new praxis of ‘abstraction‘ in his works known as ‘vortographs‘. In the 1920s,
many photographers turned to experimentation with non-representational
photography including Christian Schad, Man Ray, Moholy-Nagy, György Kepes,
Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Steichen. In the 1930s, Brassaï depicted the
expressiveness of crumbling facades, deterioration and cracks in walls in
his ‘graffiti‘ series. Finally, in the 1950s, Aaron Siskind captured the subtle
dimensions of delicately modulated textures inherent to urban landscapes
reaching what was considered to be a peak in abstract photography. The
second concept relevant to this body of work is ‘objet trouvé‘, found object.
All motifs displayed in this book were found through hours of research
cruising the streets of Zagreb focusing on many abandoned and forgotten
places. Once collected and re-contextualized, these images unveil themselves
to the viewer as the unexpected beauty and emergence of a new
visual language equal in aesthetic relevance to the conscious
works of the artistic hand. Zagreb’s hidden beauty is now revealed.
Sämtliche in diesem Buch abgebildeten
SKRIVENI RUKOPIS GRADA
Sveukupne i neprestano mijenjajuće sile promjene života u gradu ostavljaju
trajno nestabilno stanje neuhvatljivih tragova postojanja.
performativna funkcija grada. No taj jaz utemeljio je i modernističku
estetiku otpora modernizacijskom mlinu promjene.
No vjerojatno najneobičnija i najljepša posveta gradu jest ona kad The Clash
i Allen Ginsberg skupa pjevaju - pripovijedaju: ‘Do the worm on Acropolis.
Slamdance cosmopolis. Enlighten the Populace. Hungry darkness of living.
Who will thirst in the pit? Hooked in necropolis. She spent a lifetime
deciding. How to run from it. Addicts of metropolis.‘ Gdje upućuju na
sve i u svakom trenutku izloženo svakome!
No, s one strane teorije, kada se izvrne poput rukavice, postoji osobnost kojom
i teoretičari / teoretičarke i pjesnici / pjesnikinje stoje skupa u grotlu
općenitog, u kontekstu kojeg jedina mogućnost bilježenja pojedinačnog jest
položena u nizu malih poteza, grafita, spontanih intervencija, škrabotina,
nakupina povijesnih slojeva komunikacije i sličnih ostataka modernizacijskih
mijena u velikom gradu.
intimni univerzum samo-realizacije. Tako je nastala jedna od najvažnijih
slika moderne umjetnosti u Hrvatskoj.
Suprotno velikim reprezentativnim, a nerijetko ideologijski prikrivenim,
razini bilježi idejnu i emotivnu sliku, gotovo - psihogram, grada, taj manje
vidljivi grad, Zagreb kojeg slabije poznajemo...
PHOTOPOETICS - READINGS OF THE WORLD
The work of Eva Maria Schild and Lana Land might be classified as poetography
or photopainting: urban spaces turn into canvas, projection screens for
human outburst. Images have been randomly scratched, scarified and painted,
with the exception of two ‘ja‘, an ‘amen‘ or the fragments of an ‘a‘ dating from
the 50s/60s. 1 Impulsive and anonymous creations discovered by Sršen and
Schild differ from the intentional murals of graffiti artists which mainly
convey targeted messages. ‘Zagreb abstract‘ not only shows the legacies of
human action but also gives a perspective on the ways matter changes over
time.
Processes of bleaching, rusting and peeling have all left abstract
paintings which bear witness to skinnings, grazing and injuries. Layers
are laid bare, without recourse to the restorer’s scalpel. Carmine peers
out from beneath anthracite coatings. Rust has eaten its way deep into
a blue background. Walls are peeling: layers of paint are flaking off
in shreds. One is inclined to tear them down even further. The portrait
of a desquamating billboard documents this process of demolition and
replacement. 2
I titled a chapter in one of my books ‘Gentle Ways of Reading‘, 3 the sense
of which is splendidly reflected in Rainer Maria Rilke’s description
of a Parisian firewall. ‘What was most unforgettable, though, were the
walls themselves. The dogged life that had been lived in these rooms
refused to be obliterated. It was still there; it clung to the nails that
were left, it lingered on the remaining strip of floor-boarding, it was
huddled up under the little that was left of a corner section. You could
see in the paintwork how, slowly, year by year, it had changed blue into
a mildewy green, green into grey, and yellow into an old, stagnant, putrefying
white‘. 4
This type of reading may also be applied to ‘Zagreb abstract‘: the narrative
of dead matter. Attention is drawn to the smallest elements. ‘In a city
the small, empty and the open, are that which allows us to energetically
recharge and which protects us against the predominance of the large,‘
Wim Wenders notes. 5 In this sense the photographs shown in the book can
also be interpreted as a protest against things big and noisy. They call
on us to open ourselves to a world beyond aggressive advertisements
and media overkill.
The processes of discovery and photographic capturing bring about the
appearance of compositions ‘you compose almost the same moment as you
press the shutter-button‘, 6 Henri Cartier-Bresson notes. Here the camera’s
objectivity meets the subjectivity of the photographer. ‘Composition is
the result of simultaneous coalition‘, 7 Cartier-Bresson continues. The
eye carves out a niche, its decision is solidified on film. Authors follow
this same rule. Cartier-Bresson’s assertion that ‘for me photography is
the exploration in reality of the rhythm of surfaces, lines or values‘, 8
is valid for the present work. However, the reality of the so called
‘inconspicuous‘, as portrayed in the photographs, is by no means limited to
urban environments only. Harbours, industrial landscapes and dead technology
in general are excellent collection-sites for poetography or photopainting
as practised by Schild and Land.
The experienced eye may draw comparisons with Lucio Fontana’s perforated
and slashed canvas ‘Bucchi e Taglie‘. Clearly, the elevated triangles
point to the houses of Paul Klee, as do the fine lines on a blue rust
coated surface. Marc Chagall’s chicken may also be envisaged as well as
balls of wool and tangled, blue and beige yarn. Ways of interpreting are
limitless. Sometimes, the motives support the photopaintings by presenting
themselves in a way that is already framed. Taken together, a spectrum
of photopoetics unfolds, which stimulates new ways of reading. Schild
and Land visualize what Rilke put into words and what Wenders plead for.
‘In
Stadt ist die von Allen Ginsberg: ‘Do the worm on Acropolis. Slamdance
cosmopolis. Enlighten the populace. Hungry darkness of living. Who will
thirst in the pit? Hooked in necropolis. She spent a lifetime deciding.
How to run from it. Addicts of metropolis.‘ Ginsberg beschreibt hier
Schild i Lane Land. One pretvaraju gradske površine u platna; projekcijske
Impulzivne i potpuno anonimne umjetničke tvorevine
slike. Slojevi se razotkrivaju i bez restauratorova skalpela. Ispod
antracita izvire jarkocrvena, smeđecrvena hrđa nagriza nekoć
tamnoplavu podlogu. Zidovi se ljušte, nanosi boje otpadaju u komadima.
Dobijete poriv da ih dalje gulite. Portret panoa s raspadajućim
plakatima dokumentira taj proces kidanja i ponovnog ljepljenja. 2
‘Nježno iščitavanje‘ - tako sam nazvala jedno poglavlje u svojoj knjizi. 3
Rilke to izvrsno opisuje kada govori o jednom pariškom zidu;
‘Najnezaboravniji su bili sami zidovi. Žilavi život ovih soba nije se dao
gaziti.
zelena u sivu a žuta u staru i dotrajalu bijelu‘. 4 Upravo ovakvo čitanje
nalazimo u ‘Zagreb abstract-u‘; narativnost mrtve materije.
5 U tom smislu fotografije u ovoj knjizi interpretiraju
protest protiv velikog i glasnog. One pozivaju na precizniji pogled.
Otvaraju drugu realnost ‘s onu stranu’ svijeta preplavljenog agresivnošću
reklama i medija.
‘Kompozicija
nastaje u istom onom trenutku kada se pritisne okidač‘, 6 piše Henri
Cartier-Bresson. Objektivnost kamere i subjektivnost fotografa se susreću.
Bresson ideju razrađuje dalje i konstatira: ‘Kompozicija je formacija
istovremenosti‘. 7 Oko izvodi rez. Odluka oka mora biti dočarana na filmu.
Autorice slijede ovo pravilo fotografije.
Luke, industrijski krajolici i
perforirana ili razrezana platna ‘bucchi e taglie‘ Lucija Fontane. Uzdignuti
trokuti prizivaju Kleeove kuće. Klee bi se mogao prepoznati i u
finoj liniji na plavoj površini prekrivenoj hrđom. Kokoš Marc Chagalla
pojavljuje se ovdje. Izranjaju i klupka vune u kojima se plavo isprepliće
s bež nitima. Nema ograničenja išćitavanju i interpretiranju. Ponekad,
slikarskom efektu.
THE HIDDEN MANUSKRIPT OF THE CITY
The relentless, fluctuating forces underlying urban life leave existential
traces both elusive and unstable. This is a subject to have inspired many
writers, from theoreticians like Simmel, who tends to see the metropolis as
an imprint of individual or collective spiritual life, to Marshall Berman.
In stating that ‘it is not possible to step into the same modernism twice‘,
Berman stresses both the dynamics of the general theoretical discourse
and the individual histories comprising the vast mechanism that makes up
the city. This distinction or chasm between the private and the public is a
function of the modernizing effects of constant building and destruction:
a fundamental, performative function of the city. The chasm establishes
a modernist aesthetic of resistance to the contemporary mill of change.
One of the most beautiful and unusual dedications to the city is that of
Allen Ginsberg, on Ghetto Defendant by The Clash: ‘Do the worm on Acropolis.
Slamdance Cosmopolis. Enlighten the populace. Hungry darkness of living.
Who will thirst in the pit? Hooked in necropolis. She spent a lifetime
deciding. How to run from it. Addicts of metropolis...‘ Ginsberg is referring
here to the complexity of relations between the individual and the public,
whilst hinting at the disappearance of the intimate from the modern urban
landscape.
From the theoretical anticipation of the ‘global village’, the global city
formed itself as a place in a perpetual state of ubiquitous exposure. On one
side of the theory, theoreticians and poets strive to stand out from the
torment of the General. In this context, for the ordinary citizen in the
metropolis, the possibility for personal recording reveals itself through
small strokes: graffiti, a spontaneous intervention, scribble, clusters of
historical layers of communication and similar remnants of modernization
and its vicissitudes. That is what Marian Detoni saw in his ‘Fantasy of the
Deteriorated Wall‘, when he created a surface, seemingly without any real
significance, which offers an intimate, self-realizing universe to the
attentive and inspired eye. In such a way, one of the most important paintings
in Croatian modern art was conceived.
This book aims to capture the hidden manuscript of the city - that which
is present in unseen urban spaces, either left there intentionally or
spontaneously created over time. Contrary to the grandiose, representative
portrayals of the city, often hidden in ideologies presenting the city as a
platform of collectivism, this book offers an intimate micro-image of the
metropolis, elevating the ephemeral and seemingly worthless to the level of
the General. It is about the spontaneity of mass culture, and as such it does
not seek to engage at the spectacular, ideological level of the representative
culture. Rather, the book operates at a capillary level, tracing
personal ideas and emotional pictures, almost a psychogram of the city, the
less visible city; a Zagreb which reveals itself as unfamiliar or previously
unseen.
PSYCHODIAGNOSTICS OF THE CITY
Here are the truest faces of the city. In these works, we witness something
entirely different than we see living on the surface of the city. Life within
the skin of the town. The experience of being here is not merely sociological,
psychological and aesthetic (Art Informel), but also expressionistic:
a graffito, a trace, an incision, calligraphy or a stain... any residue of
anger or love!
All psychodiagnostics of the Rorschach blots, the landscapes of Cozens or
the demons of Justinus Kerner are in accord: the city (in contrast to the
village, the work of the Creator) is an invention of humans. Yet here,
creatures also leave their traces.
One could adopt all these imprints, all the city cortexes, membranes and
cuticles. And they would be more complete and magnificent than Tapies
and Fautrier together, though not stronger than Michaux, who circumnavigated
the globe and dared to venture into the deepest abysses of the termite mound.
It is very hard to follow him down there.
Amoebae, fibers, protozoa, subtle and rough drawings, hairy traces and
delicate scribblings, mortar structures and wood carvings reveal the signs
of life but also its naturalness. Here there is no such thing as coincidence.
As in a palimpsest, a new layer of life overlaps an older one, modifying its
state but always carrying the evidence of its foundations.
Corrosion, dilapidated facades, doors and doorframes, wounded and bitten
surfaces and skins, heavy tears and weeping metal plates, technological
pollution, metallic water drops, remains of walls, corrosive spit and
metastasizing of subcutaneous amoebae, but also the tender, almost watercolored
landscapes or remnants of words and letters...
Is this the childhood of the city? Its belated innocence in contrast to a
fake and embellished image of life? All life united in a collective mirror
while policemen of cleanness watch over emotions and baton-charge graffiti
artists. Nothing can silence human thunderstorms and calm seas etched into
the skin of the city. This is not Marijan Detoni’s ‘Fantasy of a deteriorated
wall’ of the 1930s: a painting of great importance that could easily mark
the beginning of the Art Informel era and prance through art collections
if it only belonged to a culturally less neglected environment.
However, here are the true faces of the city. I was blind, and now I see. I
did not know Zagreb was so beautiful. For far too long, from a distance, I
was redundantly observing forms and shapes which did not impress me. Finally
I can say: ‘Amen’ (as it is written on some wall).
PSIHODIJAGNOSTIKA GRADA
To su najistinitija lica grada. To je posve nešto drugo nego živjeti na koži
grada. Dakle, živjeti u koži grada. To nije samo sociološko, psihološko estetičko
(enformelističko) nego ekspresionističko iskustvo bića: grafit, trag,
urezotina, kaligrafija, mrlja…
I bili
Amebe, vlakna, jednostanični organizmi, nježni i
grubi crteži, rutavi tragovi i nježno pisanje, žbukopisi i rezopisi… govore
Prije
je to palimsest. Jer novi sloj života preklapa stari i mijenja zatečeno
stanje noseći svijest o svojemu ponešto starijem temelju.
Korozija, trošnost fasade, vrata i dovratnika, izranjene i izujedane podloge
i kože, teške suze i plač metalnih ploča, tehnološke polucije, metalne kapi
vode, otrgotine i strugotine zida, korozivni ispljuvci i metastaziranja podkožnih
grada?
organizirao barem kakav-takav simpozij. Ovako - ništa. Ali, evo istinitih
lica grada. Vidim.
jedoch stets durchschienen. Baufällige Fassaden, Türen und Türstöcke,
verletzte und zerbissene Flächen und Häute, schwere Tränen und weinende
Metallplatten, technologische Pollution, metallene Wassertropfen, Mauerreste,
