What's in this Issue ?
Assalamu Alaykum, Dear Readers.
Welcome to our Ramadhan Issue of Al-Islah. On
behalf of the Al-Islah Team we would like to wish all
our readers Ramadhan Mubarak. We request that you
remember and pray for the whole Muslim Ummah.
Appreciating the Blessings of Allah.
This month of Ramadhan is a very valuable month. It is
a great blessing of Allah that he has bestowed this
blessed month onto us. Besides this Allah has
blessed us with numerous other bounties. Remember,
at all times value and be grateful of these bounties &
favours of Allah . As Muslims we should always
count our blessings.
We must remind ourselves and our family members
never to disregard the favours and bounties of Allah .
By rejecting even a single blessing it could be taken
away from us, especially items of food and
sustenance. Allah's blessings are so much in number,
to actually count them will make the computers even
exhausted.
Related in Ibn Majah, ‗Aishah (R.A) narrates that once
the Prophet came to me and saw a piece of bread
lying around, seeing it he said ,―Oh Aishah! Value the
blessings of Allah because when this bread is not
appreciated in any home, it becomes upset and does
not return.‖
Hazrat Abu Hurairah says, ―Value bread; Do not be
unthankful of it because any nation who wastes food is
inflicted with poverty, hunger and destitution.‖
May Allah Ta’ala give us the correct understanding
of valuing all the bounties that he has blessed us
with especially in this very blessed month.
Ramadhan
2
0n a sweltering hot day your throat has become dry.
You are in the privacy of your home and the
refreshingly cool water is within hand‘s reach. You
desire to drink it, but you do not. Why? Simply
because you are fasting and while fasting you cannot
eat and drink. If somebody prompts you to
nevertheless drink it and says: ―Nobody is watching,‖
you will immediately rebuke them with the words: ―But
Allah is watching!‖
Subhanallah! Allah is watching. Allahu Akbar! Allah
is All Hearing, All Knowing, He is Omnipresent. He
sees and knows when we cheat while fasting, thus we
resist all temptations of food, drink and lawful conjugal
relations from dawn to dusk. We have learnt the lesson
of Taqwa. We have learnt that lesson which the fasting
was meant to teach us. Allah is watching! Yes, Allah
is watching! Every time there is an urge to eat or
drink while fasting, the voice from within cries out:
―Allah is watching!‖ Dozens of times daily for an
entire month this reality is reaffirmed. Allah is
watching. So deeply is it embedded in the heart that by
the time Ramadhan is over, a person becomes
conscious of Allah to such an extent that he is now
guided by an inner force that propels him in the
direction of righteousness and turns him away from
sin.
TAQWA. The fasts of Ramadhan were prescribed for
the purpose and object of attaining Taqwa. This is
clearly declared in the Qur‘an-al-Kareem. Taqwa
simply is to obey the commands of Allah Ta‘ala and
refrain from all sin, the increased rewards for ibaadat
(worship) in Ramadhan and all the blessings of this
great month should be considered as the bonus. The
object is Taqwa. If one performs an abundance of
Salaah, completes the recitation of the Qur‘an thirty
times and engages in many other acts of ibaadat, but
fails to give up sins – one has failed to achieve the
object and purpose of Ramadhan. One has failed to
firmly embed the reality of Taqwa in the heart, the
Taqwa that cries out ―Allah Is watching‖ whenever one
contemplates committing any transgression.
TEMPTATION. The dictates of Taqwa are not
restricted to abstaining from drinking, gambling,
adultery, transacting in interest and other such vices.
Indeed Taqwa demands that while abstaining from all
the above vices one also observes Taqwa in one‘s
business. When the temptation to cheat the customer
beckons, or when one is tempted to buy stolen goods
or to indulge in fraud, at that time also the heart should
cry out ―Allah is watching‖ and it should restrain one
from the sin.
RIGHTS. Similarly, Taqwa demands the fulfillment of
the rights of the husband/wife; It also demands the
joining of family ties. It demands respect for the elders
and kindness for the young. Taqwa entails, among
other aspects, being honest and clear in all monetary
dealings and social interactions. Hence when there is
a wedding or funeral, or at the time of distributing the
inheritance of the deceased, the same level of Allah
consciousness must be displayed as was apparent
when refraining from drinking the cold water while
fasting.
PURDAH. Likewise, when the laws of purdah are
violated, does the heart cry out ―Allah is watching?‖ Or
when one intends to watch something on TV, which
will most definitely involve one in zina of the eyes and
ears, does one hear the voice from within: ―Allah is
watching,‖ as a result of which one refrains from that
sin? The same pertains to the Shar'ee‘ aspects of
appearance and clothing. How often have we done
things to appease and please even the enemies of
Allah and Rasulullah ? How often have we
abandoned the dictates of Taqwa in order to earn a
few coppers? Now is the time to sincerely repent. It is
the time to say, ―Allah is watching.‖ and to do
everything to please Him. It is a time to acquire Taqwa.
ABSTAIN FROM SIN. This then is the object of
Ramadhan. This will only be achieved if we conduct
ourselves in this great month with Taqwa. Or else the
object of Ramadhan will be defeated. Hence
Rasulullah is reported to have said: ―He who does
not forsake lying and other futile actions, Allah Ta‘ala
has no need for him to give up his food and drink.‖
Thus together with fasting, performing Salaah, reading
the Qur‘an, serving the cause of Deen, etc... one must
totally abstain from every sin in the month of
Ramadhan and adorn oneself with Taqwa. Insha-Allah
this will then carry one along for the rest of the eleven
months to abstain from all sins.
May Allah Ta’ala enable us to make this Ramadhan
a month where we will truly attain Taqwa. Ameen
The wonderful season of spring greets us with the blessings of lush vegetation,
delicious fragrances of beautiful flowers, and trees laden with fruit. Likewise, the holy
month of Ramadhan is a month of springtime for the believer, where Allah‘s blessing
and mercy surrounds the believer at every point throughout the day and night.
Hence, surrounded by such awesome mercy, this is truly a golden opportunity for
anyone wishing for nearness to Allah and forgiveness from sin. It seems that the
phrase GOLDEN OPPURTUNITY was coined with the holy month of Ramadhan in
mind, because this phrase perfectly fits the description of this month.
Virtues & Actions
It is related by Abu Hurairah hat the Apostle of Allah
said ―When the month of Ramadhan comes, the
Gates of Heaven are thrown open and the Gates of
Hell are shut, and the devils are put behind bars‖ In
another report, the ―Gates of Mercy‖ are mentioned in
place of the ―Gates of Heaven‖. [Bukhari and Muslim]
Commenting of this Tradition, Shah Waliyullah (born in
Delhi on the 21st February 1703 AD. Out of Hazrats
many works the most monumental task he performed
was to translate the Quran from Arabic to Persian
which was the language spoken by the Muslims at that
time in India) remarks that as the devout bondsmen
apply themselves to worship and good-doings during
the month of Ramadhan and spend their days in Godremembrance
and recitation of the Qur‘an while
Fasting, and a major part of their nights in Taraweeh
and Tahajjud, supplication and repentance, under the
influence of their high spirituality and devotional
exertions the hearts of the common Muslims, too
become more inclined towards prayer and piety and
they, on the whole succeed in abstaining from good
many sins. Owing to the generation of the atmosphere
worship and virtue in the Islamic circles, people who
are not wholly disregardful of transcendental truths
develop a fondness for things that are pleasing to
Allah and an aversion for acts that are repugnant to
Him. moreover, in this blessed month the recompense
on even smaller acts of moral goodness is made much
greater by Allah than on other days. In consequence of
all this, the gates of Paradise are opened and of Hell
are closed for such people and the devils are not left
free to tempt and mislead them.
It would be clear that all the three things – the throwing
open of the gates of Heaven, the shutting up of the
gates of Hell and the binding of the devils in chains –
are in respect only of the bondsmen who feel disposed
towards good-doing in the month of Ramadhan, and
out of the keenness to partake of its blessings engage
themselves enthusiastically in worship and other
religious duties. As for the Apostates, the negligent
and the heedless who care little for Divine injunctions
and produce no change in their daily lives at the
advent of Ramadhan, these tidings do not apply to
them. When they have opted out, of their own accord,
for the path of error and omission and taken willingly to
follow Satan and doing his bidding there is nothing for
them except disappointment with Allah as well.
It is related by Abu Hurairah that the Apostle of
Allah said, ―When the first night of the month of
Ramadhan (comes), the devil‘s and defiant Jinn are
bound in chains and all the Gates of Hell are closed
and non of them remains open and all the Gates of
Heaven are thrown open and none of them remains
closed and the heavenly herald announces, ―O seeker
of goodness and virtue! come forward; and O lover of
wickedness and evil-doing! Halt, and do not come
forward‖ and a large number of (sinning) bondsmen
are released from Hell at the command of Allah (i.e.,
decision of forgiveness and deliverance is taken for
them), and all this takes place on every night of
Ramadhan.‖ [Tirmizi and Ibn-Majah]
Abdullah ibn Abbas narrates that the Apostle of
God was superior to all men in generosity and the
doing of good to the people in general, but in the
month of Ramadhan his benevolence knew no
bounds. In Ramadhan, Hazrat Jibraeel came to him
every night and the Prophet recited the Qur‘an to
him. During Ramadhan the Prophet appeared to be
faster than the wind in generosity and benevolence.
[Bukhari and Muslim]
From Meaning and Messages of the Traditions
By Shaykh Mohammad Manzoor Nomani (RA).
4 things to do in Abundance
Prophet said four things you should continue to perform
in great number in this month of Ramadhan;
1. Recite the Kalimah Tayyibah Laa llaaha illallaah.
2. Make much Istighfaar (beg Allah's forgiveness) with
Astagirfirul-laah).
3. You should beg of Allah for Jannah.
4. Ask for protection from Jahannam.
At certain times during the year, vendors arrange sales of various items at their
stores where items such as shoes and clothes can be bought at relatively
inexpensive prices. Women in particular are often very attracted to such sales
since they can save a lot of money on items that are on sale.
An examination of the Holy Quran and Hadith reveals that Allah offers
Paradise For Sale during the holy month of Ramadhan through His infinite
mercy. Allah says in the Holy Quran:
But Allah calls to the Home of Peace [10:25]
Allah opens wide the gates of mercy and invites His servants to Paradise.
Thus, they need to make every effort to work righteously and earn the right to go
there.
O Creator, we ask from You Paradise and seek refuge from the Fire
Islam & Science
Abu Ali Hasan Ibn al-Haitham was one of the most
eminent physicists, whose contributions to optics and
the scientific methods are outstanding. He is thought to
have laid the foundation for optical research we find
nowadays.
Known in the West as Alhazen, Ibn al-Haitham was
born in 965 C.E. in Basra, and was educated in Basra
and Baghdad.
He made a thorough examination of the passage of
light through various media and is credited for
discovering the laws of refraction. He also carried out
the first experiments on the dispersion of light into its
constituent colours. His famous book Kitab-al-
Manadhir was translated into Latin in the Middle Ages,
as also his book dealing with the colours of sunset. He
dealt at length with the theory of various physical
phenomena like shadows, eclipses, the rainbow, and
speculated on the physical nature of light. He is the
first to describe accurately the various parts of the eye
and give a scientific explanation of the process of
vision. He also attempted to explain binocular vision,
and gave a correct explanation of the apparent
increase in size of the sun and the moon when near
the horizon. He is known for the earliest use of the
camera obscurer. Through these extensive
researches on optics, he has been considered as the
father of modern Optics.
Diagram of eye and how it works by al-Haytham
Latin translation of his main work, Kitab-al-Manadhir,
exerted a great influence upon Western science e.g.
on the work of Roger Bacon and Kepler. It brought
about a great progress in experimental methods. His
research in catoptrics centred on spherical and
parabolic mirrors and spherical aberration. He made
The
the important observation that the ratio between the
angle of incidence and refraction does not remain
constant and investigated the magnifying power of a
lens. His catoptrics contains the important problem
known as Alhazen's problem. It comprises drawing
lines from two points in the plane of a circle meeting at
a point on the circumference and making equal angles
with the normal at that point. This leads to an equation
of the fourth degree.
In his book Mizan al-Hikmah, Ibn al-Haitham has
discussed the density of the atmosphere and
developed a relation between it and the height. He
also studied atmospheric refraction. He discovered
that the twilight only ceases or begins when the sun is
19° below the horizon and attempted to measure the
height of the atmosphere on that basis. He has also
discussed the theories of attraction between masses,
and it seems that he was aware of the magnitude of
acceleration due to gravity.
His contribution to mathematics and physics was
extensive. In mathematics, he developed analytical
geometry by establishing linkage between algebra and
geometry. He studied the mechanics of motion of a
body and was the first to maintain that a body moves
perpetually unless an external force stops it or
changes its direction of motion. This would seem
equivalent to the first law of motion.
The list of his books runs to over 200, very few of
which have survived. His monumental treatise on
optics survived through its Latin translation. During the
Middle Ages his books on cosmology were translated
into Latin, Hebrew and other languages.
In his writing, one can see a clear development of the
scientific methods as developed and applied by the
Muslims and comprising the systematic observation of
physical phenomena and their linking together into a
scientific theory. This was a major breakthrough in
scientific methodology, as distinct from guess and
gesture, and placed scientific pursuits on a sound
foundation comprising systematic relationship between
observation, hypothesis and verification.
Ibn al-Haitham's influence on physical sciences in
general, and optics in particular, has been held in high
esteem and, in fact, it ushered in a new era in optical
research, both in theory and practice.
Fruits Eaten By Rasulullah
Abdullah ibn Jaafar says, “Rasulullah ate Qith‟thaa
(cucumbers) with dates.”
Commentary Cucumber has a cold effect and dates have a hot
one. By combining the two it becomes mild. From this Hadith we
gather that it is recommended that the effect (hot or cold) of things
eaten should be taken into consideration. Cucumber is insipid and
tasteless, and dates are sweet which results in the cucumber also
tasting sweet.
Aisha radiyallah anha reports that, “Rasulullah ate watermelon
with fresh dates.”
Commentary In Tirmidhi and other narrations, in explaining this,
Sayyidina Rasulullah also said, “The cold effect of one removes
the heat of the other, and the heat of one removes the cold effect
of the other.”
Guidance
In order to maximise our time and perform our 'ibaadat
with ease, we should try to follow a set routine or
timetable. Hereunder is a suggested timetable.
We must wake up for suhoor as it is a Sunnah of our
Rasulullah . He has informed us that the food of
suhoor is full of barakah.
We should arrange our time for suhoor in such a way
that we are also able to perform Tahajjud together with
du'aa. Rasulullah has said that the du'aa in the
darkness of the night (after Tahajjud) is readily
accepted by Allah. (Tirmizi) Everyone in the house
should wake up and engage in 'ibaadat in the
darkness and isolation of their own rooms. Shed tears
and ask Allah for your needs. Rasulullah has
encouraged his followers to cry when making du'aa.
Crying and weeping attracts mercy. When one sheds
tears whilst beseeching his Lord, the Mercy of the Lord
will enshroud him.
Read Fajr with congregation. After Fajr remain
engaged in 'ibaadat till 15-20 minutes after sunrise
and perform 4 rak'aat Ishraaq.
Salaat ul Duhaa. Before Zawwal, perform Salaat ul
Duhaa (Chaasht).
Zuhr. Perform Zuhr with congregation. If possible,
engage in 'ibaadat for a while and have a short rest
with the intention of Qayloolah (siesta) – a Sunnah of timetable set out above.
our beloved Prophet . STORIES OF PIOUS WOMEN
May Allah accept our efforts and make every moment
Asr and Iftar. Perform 'Asr. The time between 'Asr and of this month a means of receiving His Mercy,
Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (Rahmatullahi Alayh)
Maghrib is very valuable, especially for du'aa. We
must make the effort to perform our 'Asr with
congregation and then remain in the Masjid until
Maghrib. This is the best part of the day, which we do
not value, only because of our desire for food.
Rasulullah said, "There are three groups of people
whose du'aa is not rejected; the fasting person until he
breaks the fast..." (Ahmad)
When Allah has made a promise through His Prophet
, there is no doubt in the acceptance of these
supplications. We should be making du'aa with
attention and concentration. If our hearts and minds
are not in our du'aa, then they may not be answered.
15-20 minutes before Maghrib,
we should raise our hands in du'aa until Adhaan. In
this way, everyone will be engrossed in their own
'ibaadat. Therefore value this time between 'Asr and
Maghrib. I would request my sisters not to spend the
time between 'Asr and Maghrib in the kitchen.
After performing Maghrib read 6 Rakats of
Awwaabeen. Some 'Ulama have said that two rak'aat
sunnat and two rak'aat nafl of Maghrib can also
become part of the 6 rak'aat awwaabeen. Hence,
performing only two rak'aat after the sunnat and nafl of
Maghrib will suffice. During the summer months there
is a less time between Maghrib and 'Isha, therefore we
should eat a light meal, take a short rest and prepare
oneself for the Isha and Taraweeh Salah.
Thereafter return to the Masjid and engage yourself in
'ibaadat. Take great care not to get involved in any
worldly talk. The sisters should note that 20 rak'aat
Taraweeh is sunnat-e-mu'akkadah for them too. They
must perform Taraweeh after 'Isha.
After Taraweeh, go straight home. Do not loiter around
outside the Masjid wasting time. At home, remain in
'ibaadat until you go to sleep. Sleep with the intention
of waking up for Tahajjud and suhoor.
Bayaans. Although the month of Ramadhan is solely
for 'ibaadat, we should try and attend programmes
taking place in the Masjid led by our 'Ulama. These
are for our own benefit. There are many of us who are
very sinful and during this month our hearts are
softened and more receptive; by listening to the wise
words of our 'Ulama the chances of bringing good
deeds into practice are greater. Our hearts are
blackened by and full of sins and by listening to these
discourses and sitting in the company of the 'Ulama
and the pious, change will definitely occur in our
hearts, Insha‘Allah.
Everyone should try to take rest in order to conserve
energy for the compulsory 'ibaadat. There is no point
in remaining in nafl 'ibaadat and not getting rest, which
will result in tiredness and laziness at the time of
compulsory Salaat, etc. Hence, every person should
fix a convenient time for rest and include it in the
Blessing and Forgiveness. May we all be granted a
place in Jannah. Aameen.
Hadhrat Sahal narrates that the holy Prophet said:
―The people will remain prosperous so long as they
hasten in breaking their fast (at the time of
Iftar).‖ [Bukhari]
Hadhrat Umar narrates that the holy Prophet said:
―Not a single prayer made by a fasting person at the
time of breaking fast (iftar) is rejected.‖[ Ibn Majah]
Once Hazrat Musa asked Almighty Allah, O Allah!
You have granted me the honour and privilege of
talking to you directly, Have you given this privilege to
any other person? Allah Ta‘ala replied, O Musa, during
the last period I am going to send an Ummah (Nation),
who will be the Ummah of Muhammad Sallallaahu
alaihe Wasallam with dry lips, parched tongues,
emaciated body with eyes sunken deep into their
sockets, with livers dry and stomachs suffering the
pangs of hunger – who will call out to me (in dua) they
will be much much closer to me than you O Musa!
While you speak to me there are 70,000 veils between
you and me but at the time of Iftar there will not be a
single veil between me and the fasting followers of
Muhammad Sallallaahu alaihe Wasallam. O Musa I
have taken upon myself the responsibility that at the
time of Iftar I will never refuse the dua of a fasting
person!
KEEP YOURSELF OCCUPIED WITH DUA BEFORE
BREAKING YOUR FAST
Never underestimate the power of dua
When nothing helps only dua helps
Virtues of Sehri. Hazrat Ibn Umar relates:
Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaihe Wasallam) said: ‗Verily
Allah and His Malaa‘ikah (angels) send Mercy upon
those who eat ‗Sehri‘ (sower-Suhoor).‖
There are many Ahaadith in which the virtues of
―Sehri‖ are expounded and the rewards mentioned.
Many people are deprived of this great reward
because of their own laziness. Some even go so far as
to finish ‗Taraweeh‘, eat (what they suppose to be
―Sehri‘!) and go to bed. What great blessings do they
lose! ―Sehri‖ actually means partaking of food shortly
before dawn. Some authorities say that the time for
―Sehri‖ commences after half the night has passed
(Mirqaat).
Rasulullah said: ‗The difference between our fasting
and that of the Ahlul-Kitaab (Jews and Christians) lies
in our partaking of food at ―Sehri‖ which they do not.‖
The Prophet has said, ―Eat Sehri, because in it lie
great blessings; and again. ―
When Rasulullah used to invite any of the
companions to eat ―Sehri‖ with him, he used to say:
―Come and partake of blessed food with me.‖ One
Hadith says: ―Eat ‗Sehri‘ and strengthen yourself for
the fast. And sleep in the afternoon (Siesta), so as to
gain assistance in waking up in the latter portion of the
night.‖
Abdullah bin Haarith reports that one of the
Sahaabah said: ―I once visited Rasulullah (Sallallaahu
Alaihi Wasallam) at a time when he was busy in
partaking of ‗Sehri‘. Rasulullah then said: ―This is a
thing full of blessings, which Allah has granted you. Do
not give it up.‖ Rasulullah (Sallallaahu alaihe
Wasallam) has urged us repeatedly for ‗Sehri‘ and is
reported to have said: ―Even though there be no food,
then one date should be eaten or a drink of water
taken.‖
Muslims should endeavour to observe this practice as
much as possible. However, in all things, moderation is
important: neither should so little be eaten that one
feels weak throughout the fast, nor should so much be
eaten that it causes discomfort.
Sahl bin Abdullah Tastari a great saint, who used to
eat only once every fifteen days, while in Ramadhan
he ate only one morsel; but in order to follow the
Sunnah, he used to have a drink of water daily for
‗Sehri‘ and ‗Iftar‘.
Similarly, we can recall the practice of our pious
predecessors who disciplined their inner-selves by
eating less. However let us bear in mind that this
practice should not be carried out to such extremes
where other ‘ religious‘ activities and responsibilities
are neglected, as a result of weakness of the body.
Tasbeeh of Taraweeh
During the pause after each four rakahs of
Taraweeh Salaah the worshipper has the option
to sit quiet or recite some Tasbeeh, or offer a
voluntary prayer. Some jurists, however, have
recommended that the following Tasbeeh be
recited in the pause:
over and over every day of the entire month. We
beseech Allah Ta‘ala to grant such devotion to us as
well, along with I'tikaf during the last ten days.
I‘tikaf is a Sunnah that takes devotion and time and it
is something to help us progress from doing the
obligatory acts of worship into the mustahabaat
(recommended acts of worship) and we should always
seek to do more and be like those righteous Muslims
who do more in their worship.
The great Tabi'ee (student of the Companions) Imam
Al-Hasan al-Basri said, ―Whoever competes with you
in the Deen then try to surpass him (compete with
him), and whoever competes with you in the matters of
this life then throw it back at him (ignore him).
Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar narrates: ―Allah‘s
Messenger used to practice I‘tikaf in the last ten days
of the month of Ramadhan.‖ (Bukhari)
A person should fulfil one‘s I'tikaf in such a Masjid
wherein the five daily Salaah is offered. A Masjid in
terms of the Shariah. By means of this act Allah Ta‘ala
has granted us solitude while in a gathering.
By doing a single day of I'tikaf, the Mu‘takif receives
the reward of two Hajj and two Umrah and removed
from Jahannam of a distance of five hundred years.
Another amazing point is the fact that one who is
waiting for Salaah is granted the rewards of being in
Salaah. It is as if the person forming the intention for
I'tikaf has begun Salaah on the eve of the twentieth of
Ramadhan and remains engaged in this Salaah for a
full ten days and nights, till the sighting of the crescent
for Eid after which he turns for Salaam and completes
his Salaah. While fast asleep, he is in Salaah! While
wide a wake, he is in Salaah! While eating, he is in
Salaah! While drinking, he is in Salaah! At every
instant during his stay in the Masjid he is in Salaah. At
times this is actually so while at other times he is
allegorically so. We beseech Allah Ta‘ala to grant us
the abundant Taufeeq for these actions to be
performed during Ramadhan and that He make them
easy for us and assist us therein.
O Allah! We are weak and helpless. We are assailed
by different forms of illnesses. O Allah! Provide us with
Your assistance from the unseen whereby we can
imbibe all these aspects within us. Let us engage in
the abundant recitation of the Qur'aan as in the case of
Hazrat Raipuri who gave up all his correspondence as
well as meeting people and was either occupied in
fasting or recitation of the Quran. This cycle continued
O Allah! Grant abundant Taufeeq to us as well as to
our children and the other members of our household.
O Allah! Grant us the Taufeeq to spend Ramadhan in
keeping with the Sunnah as discussed. Grant us the
Taufeeq to spend Ramadhan in the shadows of Your
accepted servants, Ameen.
I'tikaf for Women
A woman should perform I'tikaf in her home at the place where she
performs her daily Salaat or any suitable place.
Niyyah for Nafl I’tikaf
Zakah is an obligatory charity giving is an act of
worship and spiritual investment. The literal meaning of
Zakah is purity and it refers to the annual amount
which a Muslim with means must distribute among the
rightful beneficiaries. Zakah does not only purify the
property of the contributor but also purifies his heart
from selfishness and greed. It also purifies the heart of
the recipient from envy and jealousy, from hatred and
uneasiness and it fosters instead good-will and warm
wishes for the contributors.
Zakah has a deep humanitarian and social-political
value; for example, it frees society from class welfare,
from ill feelings and distrust and from corruption.
Although Islam does not hinder private enterprise or
condemn private possession, it does not tolerate
selfish and greedy capitalism. Islam adopts a moderate
but positive and effective course between individual
and society, between the citizen and the state,
between capitalism and socialism, between
materialism and spiritualism.
Zakah is paid on the net balance after paying personal
expenses, family expenses, due credits, taxes, etc.
Every Muslim male or female, who at the end of the
year is in possession of the Nisaab, must give Zakah at
the minimum rate of 2.5%.i.e. £2.50 from every £100.
The recipients of Zakah are those who either do not
possess their basic needs at all or they do possess
their basic needs but not the Nisaab.
Note the obligatory nature of Zakah; it is compulsory.
Muslims can also go above and beyond what they pay
as Zakah, in which case the offering is a strictly
voluntary charity (Sadaqah).
“I asked: O Messenger of Allah! Tell me if I were to find
a Night of Power, what should I recite therein?” Holy
Prophet Muhammad advised her to recite:
Laylatul Qadr is the crowning glory of the holy month
of Ramadhan. It is associated with the sending down
of the Qur‘an on the Prophet , for the guidance of
mankind.
The Night of Power is the night of spiritual bliss. Our
Nabi is reported to have said, “Verily this month
has come to you; and therein is a night which is better
than a thousand Months. Whosoever is deprived of it is
deprived of all good; and none is deprived of its good
except a totally unfortunate person”. (Ibn Majah)
A thousand months are equivalent to 83 years and 4
months. Fortunate is the person who prays for the
whole night during this Night. They will deserve
blessings and reward for the period as if he or she had
been praying for eighty three years and four months
consecutively. Since the Night of Power is better than
one thousand months no one can actually measure the
extent as to how much better it is.
The Holy Prophet said: ―Laylatul Qadr has been
bestowed by Allah to my Ummah. It was not given to
any people before this.‖ (Dur-Mansoor).
How manifest and replete the special bounties and
mercies of Allah are upon this Ummah is quite really
beyond imagination. It will therefore be extremely
foolish to allow ourselves to be deprived of these great
blessings at the expense of sheer laziness and a few
hours of extra sleep.
Allahumma innaka „afoowwan tuhibbul afwa fa‟fu anni.
O Allah! You are Forgiving; You love forgiveness, so
forgive me. (Bukhari).
Special attention should therefore be given to the
excessive recitation of this dua on the blessed night.
Furthermore one may engage in lengthy rakats of
Tahajjud Salaah, Tilaawat of the Qur‘an, Dua, Zikr, etc.
The worship and the vigil of the Night of Power are a
treat to the soul. The heart tends to melt into tears of
heartfelt gratitude. The body is in a state of angelic
ecstasy, the soul strives to reach nearer to Almighty
Allah. In this holy month of Ramadhan let us strive to
seek the Night of Power and its bliss. May Allah
reward us with His bountiful blessings. Aameen.
ACTS OF LAYLATUL QADR
Mufti Yusuf Sacha (D.B)
First Act
The greatest act is the act of Ummul-Mu'mineen
Hazrat Aysha Siddiqah Radiallahu Anha. i.e. to recite
the following dua as often as possible before Nawaafil
Salaah, after Nawaafil Salaah and in Qaidah Akhirah.
Second Act
Hazrat Ka'ab Ihbaar narrates, that whoever reads
Kalimah Tayyibah 3 times in Shabe-Qadr, Allah Ta'ala
will remove his sins. When read the first time the sins
will be removed, when read the second time he will be
freed from hell and when read the third time he will be
entitled for Jannat.
8
Although there are different reports in different
traditions regarding the exact night, it is almost
unanimous that the blessed night occurs in one of the
last ten nights of Ramadhan and more probably in one
of the last ten odd nights.
The popular opinion is, in favour of the 27th Night of
Ramadhan but that is not absolutely certain. The
traditions indicate that it is to be sought in one of the
last ten nights and preferably in the last three odd
nights. It was the practice of the Holy Prophet and
his companions to make I‘tikaf in the Masjid for the
whole time offering Divine service during the last ten
days of Ramadhan.
Hazrat Aisha (Radhiallahu Anha) reported that the
Apostle of Allah said: “Search for the Blessed Night
in the odd (nights) from the last ten (nights) of
Ramadhan” (Bukhari).
Hazrat Aisha has narrated another saying:
Third Act
Hazrat Ali narrates, whoever reads Surah Qadr 7
times during the night of Laylatul Qadr, Allah Ta'ala
will safeguard him from all difficulties and 70.000
angels will make dua for Jannat for the reciter.
Fourth Act
Hazrat Abdullah Ibn Abbas narrates, perform 2
Rak'aats Salaat-u-Tawbah, recite in the first
Rak'aat
in the second Rak'aat.
and recite
After salaam whilst sitting in the same place make
Istigfaar 70 times. Performing of this act Allah will
forgive him and his parents.
Eid was named as such
because it returns every year
with renewed happiness.
Eid days are thus named
because Allah renews His
bounties in them, and He
distributes His blessings to
His worshippers. Thus, on Eid
al-Fitr, He permits them to eat after having been
restrained from food, and He requires paying
Sadaqat al-Fitr (the charity of breaking the fast) to the
needy, as well as because the custom in Eid is joy,
happiness, cheerfulness, and gladness.
Sadaqat-ul-Fitr is an obligation for every Muslim,
male or female, who owns 613.35 grams of silver or
its equivalent, either in the form of money,
ornaments, stock-in-trade, or in the form of some
goods or commodities beyond one's normal needs.
Every person who owns such an amount has to pay
Sadaqat-ul-Fitr, not only on behalf of himself but also
on behalf of his minor children. The prescribed
amount of Sadaqat-ul-Fitr is 1.75 Kilograms of wheat
or its value in money. This amount is prescribed for
paying Sadaqat-ul-Fitr for one person only. If a
person has young children, the same amount has to
be paid on behalf of each one of them separately.
The following points must be remembered with
regards to the payment of Sadaqat-ul-Fitr.
Sadaqat-ul-Fitr is compulsory on each adult male and
female separately, and each person himself is
responsible to pay it. A husband is not required to
pay Sadaqat-ul-Fitr on behalf of his wife nor his adult
children. However, if the head of the family, by his
own free will, wishes to pay Sadaqat-ul-Fitr for each
one of the members of his family, he should seek
their permission for this purpose. In this case the
Sadaqat-ul-Fitr paid by him will be valid on their
behalf. If he did not pay the Sadaqat-ul-Fitr on behalf
of any of the adult members of his family, he will not
be responsible for it.
It is a Sunnah that the Sadaqat-ul-Fitr be paid before
performing the 'Eid prayer. It can also be paid before
the 'Eid day, but it is not advisable to delay it up to
the performance of Eid prayer. However, if a person
has failed to pay before its proper time, he should
pay it as soon as possible, whereby the obligation will
stand discharged.
The Sadaqat-ul-Fitr is not necessary on behalf of a
child who was born after the break of dawn in the 'Eid
day, nor is it necessary to pay Sadaqat-ul-Fitr on
behalf of a person who dies before the dawn of the
Eid day.
Sadaqat-ul-Fitr should be paid only to a person who
is entitled to receive Zakah.
Taraweeh Salah
The Prophet Muhammad, , has regarded the Taraweeh Salah
as a means of the forgiveness of sins. He has said:
"The one who observes the Taraweeh Salah at night during
Ramadhan with complete faith and devotion only for the sake of
the recompense of the hereafter, will have all of his previous sins
forgiven by Allah." (Bukhari, Muslim)
Scholars have regarded the collective offerings of the Taraweeh
Salah as a compulsory Sunnah. According to consensus of the
Companions, the Taraweeh Salah consists of twenty raka‟ah
which are to be offered two at a time with one salutation and after
every four raka‟ah a short pause of rest has to be observed for the
convenience of the people. The worshipper has the option to sit
quiet during the pause after each four raka‟ah, or recite the
Tasbeeh, or offer a voluntary Salah.
The witr Salah is allowed to be offered collectively only during
Ramadhan.
It is Sunnah of the Holy Prophet, , to complete recital of the
whole Quran, from the beginning to the end. One must understand
that the Taraweeh Salah is a compulsory Sunnah of the Prophet,
, and has to be observed regularly until the end of the month of
Ramadhan, no matter whether the Quran has been recited once or
more than once in the Masjid.
Islamic Teachings
It originates from remembering Allah and being conscious
of Him. A person who seeks to please Allah and avoid
His wrath can only do so if he or she is conscious of Allah
at all times. This is why the term Taqwa is also expressed
in English as God-consciousness.
By Maulana Sulaiman Bodiat Sahib
(Translated by Maulana Zakariya Barber)
Taqwa is one of the fundamental principles in Islam. It is
usually translated as: "Fear of Allah, piety, righteousness,
or being conscious of Allah, aware of His attributes, His
might, and power." It implies self-restraint, guarding
oneself from all sins, wrong deeds, and
injustice. Taqwa is not a passive idea. It is not merely a
feeling or an emotion. Taqwa is an active concept. It is
about performing good deeds and positive actions in
preparation for the Hereafter, the next life.
In addition, Taqwa is the only basis by which people are
considered superior to others in Islam; Almighty Allah
says: O humankind! Lo! We [Allah] have created you
male and female and we have made you nations and
tribes that you may know one another. Lo! The noblest of
you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Lo!
Allah is Knower, Aware. (Al-Hujurat 49:13)
Taqwa is something we earn by acts of faith and
obedience. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be
upon him) talked about Taqwa, he said that Taqwa is
here and pointed to his heart. Indeed, Taqwa lies in the
heart. It is not something that one can measure. I cannot
measure your level of Taqwa nor can you measure my
level of Taqwa. We may judge in general by the outer
actions of people, but we cannot judge the heart.
You may say that someone does not seem to have very
much Taqwa because they are doing a lot of things that
are displeasing to Allah. Or you may say that another
person seems to have more Taqwa because he or she
seems to be doing a lot of things of which Allah approves.
We judge by the outer appearance, by what we see. But
our judgments are not perfect. They are superficial
judgments because we really do not know what is going
on inside the heart of a person.
Taqwa is not something that we can ultimately judge from
outside. Taqwa is invisible; it is a state of mind and heart.
For example, Almighty Allah says regarding
Prayers, “And establish the prayer for My
remembrance.” (Ta-Ha 20:14)
When a person is conscious of Allah, aware that He is
Ever-Watching, that person would not do the things that
would displease Allah. It is when we forget Allah that
Satan finds the opportunity to approach us, to misguide
us, and to suggest evil, and we then fall into sin.
Throughout our lives, we are in that state of constant
struggle between remembering and forgetting Allah.
Remembrance of Allah ensures righteousness, whereas
forgetting Him opens the door for sin.
Taqwa is, therefore, a concept having to do with the
remembrance of Allah, fearing Allah and avoiding His
wrath. All of this is related to Taqwa, and all of it
represents the goal or the basic principle that Islam seeks
to develop in us and which, ultimately, is the foundation of
righteousness.
If you persevere in your efforts to remember Allah and
strive constantly to develop your Taqwa at all times
passionately and sincerely, you may then achieve a
special status of being a Waliy; a close and dedicated
servant. Allah states in the Qur'an: Behold, certainly no
fear and no grief will overcome the Allah's awliyaa' -
those who believe and have Taqwa. (Yunus 10:62-63)
The statuses of the sincere servants are further illustrated
in the following Hadith Qudsi (Divine Hadith),
I [Allah] announce war against whoever takes a devout
servant of Mine as an enemy. And My servant does not
come closer to Me by anything more beloved to Me than
the things that I have made compulsory for him.
Furthermore, if My servant continues to get close to Me
by performing supererogatory acts of worship, I will love
him. In case this happens, I will be as the hearing with
which he hears, the sight with which he sees, the hand
with which he strikes, and the leg with which he walks; if
he asks Me for something, I will certainly grant his
request; and if he seeks refuge with Me, I will certainly
give it to him.
The Hadith illustrates that after doing the compulsory acts
of worship, the believer continues to come closer to Allah
by doing voluntary acts of worship until Allah loves him or
her. Each and every one of the compulsory acts of
Whoever Returns to Sin After Ramadhan
Yahya bin Muaadh said: The smart individual is not the one whose greatest goal is other than seeking the pardon of Allah. (The smart
individual is not the one who) seeks forgiveness with his tongue, while his heart is firmly attached to sin, and he truly intends to return to
sin after the completion of Ramadhan. This individual's fast is rejected, and acceptance is closed in his face.
Ka'b said: Whoever fasts Ramadhan while inwardly saying: Once the month is over, I will disobey Allah; this person's fasting is rejected.
And whoever fasts the month while inwardly saying: Upon completion of the month, I won't disobey Allah; this person will enter Jannah
without questioning or debate.
Islamic Teachings
worship has a voluntary aspect to it. The compulsory is
supposed to develop in us a desire to do the voluntary,
because when a person is completing the voluntary
aspects of worship, then these acts of worship are
transformed from a mere ritual into a way of life. They
become part and parcel of a person's lifestyle.
Similarly, fasting the month of Ramadhan is compulsory.
The goal, however, is not merely that we fast Ramadhan
every year, but also to make fasting a way of life for us.
What we are trying to develop, therefore, is a consistent
attitude toward fasting: to fast on a regular basis. Fasting
is about developing self-restraint, personal control over
desires, whether for food, for sexual relations, or
speaking about everything.
This control is not something that we need only one
month in a year; rather, it is needed throughout the year.
Our desire for self-control will not become a reality until
fasting becomes a way of life for us.
Similarly, Zakah is compulsory once a year. However,
Zakah is there to develop in us generosity and the love
for Sadaqah (Optional charity); Sadaqah also means
reaching out and helping others willingly whenever we
have an opportunity to do so.
To summarize, Taqwa is not simply a passive idea. It is
an active concept that must underpin everything we do.
When we remember Almighty Allah and try to please Him
in all of our daily affairs, Taqwa shall, thus, become a way
of life.
Qazaa Salaah
FARZ and WAAJIB Salaat performed AFTER it's time
has EXPIRED will be called QAZAA, E.G. If ASR
Salaat is performed at MAGHRIB time, it will be
QAZAA.
To DELAY any FARZ, WAJIB or SUNNATE
MUAKKADAH Salaat INTENTIONALLY
and cause them to become QAZAA is very SINFUL..
It is COMPULSORY upon every MUSLIM to perform
the missed number of Farz and Waajib Salaat since
the time one has become baaligh (reached the age of
PUBERTY).
Ramadhan is an ideal opportunity to start making up
for missed salaah.
The Niyyat of Qazaa Namaaz
When making the NIYYAT for QAZAA, It is necessary
to make Niyyah for the particular Namaaz missed.
If one has missed a number of Salaat, then one
should make Niyyah (intention) thus:
"I am performing such and such day's Fajr or Zuhr."
If a person has missed MORE than ONE Fajr or Zuhr,
it will NOT be sufficient to say:
"I am performing Qazaa for Fajr or Zuhr." One should
say: "I am performing such and such day's Fajr."
If one has missed so many Farz Salaat that one does
NOT remember the exact number of days when the
Salaat was missed, then the Niyyah should be made
as follows:
"Oh Allah! I am performing the FIRST or the FIRST
Zuhr Farz from those which I have missed."
Continue doing this until satisfied that all the missed
number of Salaat are performed.
Islam & Taqleed
LEGAL
S T A T U S
OF FOLLOWING A
M A D H A B
Hazrat Mufti Moosa Badat Saheb (D.B)
If somebody has started to follow one Madhab, can he
totally or partly follow another Madhab later on or does
he always have to stay with the first Madhab?
In response to this question if the trust, on the basis of
which a person starts to do Taqleed of an Imam, starts
to expire from one Imam, due to vast knowledge and
deep understanding, then it is permissible to change
Imam‘s totally and not partly. Or else, Talfeeq will
come into existence which is not permissible.
So what if a common person who does not have any
knowledge of Qur'aan and Sunnah, wants to move
from one Madhab to another Madhab?
This will not be permitted. It is fulfilling the desires and
it becomes a play. Aqdul-]ayyid, Insaaf, Sabeelur-
Rashaad, AI-Iqtisaad, Intisaarul-Haq, Tayseer and At-
Taqreer wat-Tahbeer, have all stated the detailed
evidence regarding this issue.
IS IT AGAINST TAQLEED FOR A HANAFI TO
FOLLOW SOMEBODY ELSE 'S VIEW?
THE NIGHT PRECEDING
EID-UL
UL-FITR
Even though this night has been named Laylatul Jaiza
(the night of reward), it is unfortunate that we as
Muslims do not take advantage of such an opportunity
to gain reward. Rather, at times we get so engaged in
renting cars, shopping for nice clothes, applying henna
etc., that we become negligent of the commands of
Allah Ta‘ala.
The scholars have stated that Allah Ta‘ala rewards His
fasting slaves on this very night, by accepting one's
du‘aa. Thus a person's every wish and prayer will be
granted. Therefore one should perform nafl, recite
Qur'an and perform zikr on this night. The Holy
Prophet Sallallaahu Alaihi Wasallam is also reported to
have said:
"Whoever stands up (in worship) in the night
preceding the two Eids expecting reward form
Allah, his heart will not die when other hearts will
die," (Ibn Majah).
What is the definition of Taqleed? Will a person still
remain a Hanafi if he acts upon Imam Abu Yusuf‘s
Rahmatullahi alaihe view or Imam Zufar's
Rahmatullahi alaihe. Also will he still remain a Hanafi if
he acts upon the opinion of Imam Shafi'ee
Rahmatullahi alaihe or Imam Malik Rahmatullahi
alaihe at the time of need (for example the Mas'alah of
Mafqood)?
For a Non Mujtahid to follow a Mujtahid, trusting him
that he has the proof and evidence for it and he does
not ask him for the evidence, is known as Taqleed.
The principle of Imam A'zam Rahmatullahi alaihe
which his students have described in de-tails and from
which other Masaa'il are derived, whether these
Masaa'il are directly from Imam Sahib Rahmatullahi
alaihe or not, a person who adopts them remains a
'Hanafi'. The views of Imam Sahibs students are in
actual fact Imam Sahibs views, regardless of whether
they are directly or indirectly from Imam Sahib.
Therefore, acting upon them on special occasions
does not expel an individual from Hanafiyah.
Sometimes, because of changes in occurrences and
incidents, the ruling changed in a way that the scholars
of the later era understood that if Imam Sahib
Rahmatullahi alaihe was still alive today, he would
have made a certain ruling in a particular Mas'alah.
Therefore, they decided upon that ruling, regardless of
whether that was the view of Imam Shafi'ee
Rahmatullahi alaihe or an opinion of any other Imam.
These type of changes, like the excellence of Hajj, nafl
and Sadaqah etc., can be found in the time of Imam
Sahib Rahmatullahi alaihe himself. Hence, this does
not cause any changes in Hanafiyah.
ON THE DAY OF
EID-UL
UL-FITR
To perform the following on the day of ‗Eid are Sunnah:
To wake up early.
To use Miswaak.
To take a shower.
To put on one's best clothes.
To use „Itr (Scent).
To eat something sweet, preferably dates before
the ‗Eid prayer.
To recite Takbeer-ut-Tashreeq (Allahu Akbar,
Allahu Akbar, La Ilaha Illallahu, Wallahu Akbar,
Allahu Akbar wa lillahilhamd) in a loud voice while
going to the ‗Eid prayer.
To proceed to the ‗Eid prayer one way and to
return home from another way.
Question: Does internal check up and vaginal
would be insufficient for the child which might be
dangerous. In this case, I have heard that there is
"Rukhsat" for the women from Fasting. Is it true? Is
there any Kafaarah for the month of Ramadhan if she
is unable to fast for some days or for the whole month?
Answer: Yes, she is given this concession to abstain
from fasting if fasting is detrimental to her or to the
baby.
No, there is no Kafaarah in this case. She only has to
observe Qadhaa for the missed fasts after Ramadhan
whenever she is able to.
Question: Please could you tell me if the six days of
fasting in Shawwaal, is to be done on the first six days
after Eid or any days of Shawwaal.
Answer: The six days of fasting in Shawwal may be
kept anytime in Shawwal.
Question: Please can you tell me what 3 days during
the year it is forbidden to fast?
Answer: According to Shariah, it is forbidden to fast on
five days. They are: • Eid ul Fitr, • Eid ul Adha, • Three
days of Tashreeq (i.e. three days after Eid ul Adha).
Rasulullah is reported to have said "Do not fast in
these days (Eid) for they are days of eating, drinking
and rejoicing."
Question: Is it Makrooh to fast on Fridays? Why?
Answer: It is Makrooh to single out Friday for fasting
because the Hadith prohibits it. Rasulullah said? Do
not specify the day of Jum'uah for fasting from
amongst the other days. (Muslim)
Virtues of Tahajjud
Abu Hurairah reported that Nabi said, “The best fast after the
fast of Ramadhan is the fast of Muharram and the best Salaah after
the obligatory prayers is the prayer performed at night.” (Muslim)
„Uqbah bin Aamir says that he heard Nabi saying, “A man from
amongst my followers stands up to offer prayers in the night. He
goes to perform ablution, but he has knots tied upon him. When he
washes his hands, one knot is opened. When he washes his face,
another knot is opened. When he wipes his head, another knot is
opened. When he washes his feet, another knot is opened. Allah
then addresses the angels behind the veils saying, “Look at this
servant of mine who is preparing himself in order to ask of my
favours. Whatever My servant asks, I will give it to him”. (Ahmad,
Ibne Hibbaan)
Abdullah bin Salaam says, “When the Nabi of Allah firstly came to
Medina, all of the people rushed towards him. I was one from
amongst them. When I looked at his r face and I was very certain
that it was him, I realized that his face was not the face of a liar.
Abdullah bin Salaam continues saying that from amongst the first
things that I heard him saying was, “O people, Spread the
greeting amongst yourselves and feed others and join family
relationships and perform prayers in the night when people are
asleep, you will enter Paradise peacefully. (Tirmidhi, Ibne Majah,
Hakim)
Abu Maalik Al-Ash‟ari narrates that Nabi says, “Certainly in the
paradise, there are chambers. Its outside can be seen from inside
and its inside can be seen from outside. Allah has prepared these
chambers for those who feeds others and spreads salaams and
performs Salaah in the night when people are asleep. (Ibne
Hibbaan)
Asmaa binte Yazeed (RA) narrates that Nabi said, “On the day of
resurrection, the people will be gathered upon one plain field and an
announcer will proclaim saying, “where are those who separated
their sides from their beds? A little amount of people will stand up.
They will enter paradise without reckoning, and then it will be
ordered that the remaining people be taken to reckoning”. (Baihaqi)
temperature, plays a major role in brain development
because of the sugar and fat it contains. In addition,
elements such as calcium in it play a large role in the
development of the baby‘s bones.
And We have enjoined upon man goodness
towards his parents: His mother bore him by
bearing strain upon strain, and his weaning was
in two years: “[Hence, O man,] be grateful to Me
and to your parents; to Me is the eventual
coming.” (Qur’an, 31:14)
Mother‘s milk is a matchless compound created by
Allah to meet the baby‘s nutritional needs and protect
it against possible infections. The balance of the
nutriments in mother‘s milk is at ideal levels and the
milk is in the ideal form for the baby‘s immature body.
Research has shown that babies who are fed
mother‘s milk are particularly protected against
infections concerning the respiratory and digestive
systems. That is because the antibodies in mother‘s
milk provide a direct defence against infection. Since
the mother‘s milk has been specially designed, it is
the most easily digestible food for babies. Despite
being nutritionally very rich, it is easily digested by the
baby‘s sensitive digestive system.
Research by Bristol University scientists revealed that
among the long-term benefits of mother‘s milk are its
positive effect on blood pressure, thanks to which the
risk of heart attack is reduced. The research team
concluded that the protective nature of mother‘s milk
stems from its nutritional content. According to the
results of the research, published in the medical
journal Circulation, babies fed on mother‘s milk are
less likely to develop heart disease.
Mother‘s milk, ready at all times and at the ideal
Although it is called milk, this miraculous compound
actually consists mostly of water. This is a most
important feature because in addition to food, babies
also need liquid in the form of water. Full hygiene may
not be established in water or foodstuffs other than
mother‘s milk. Yet mother‘s milk—90% water no less -
, meets the baby‘s water needs in the most hygienic
manner.
Scientific research shows that the cognitive
development in breast-fed babies is greater than that
in other babies. A comparative analysis of breast-fed
babies and formula-fed babies by James W.
Anderson - an expert from the University of Kentucky
- established that the IQs of babies fed on mother‘s
milk were 5 points higher than those of other babies.
As a result of this study, it was determined that
intelligence is benefited by mother‘s milk for up to 6
months and that children who are breast-fed for less
than 8 weeks show no IQ benefit.
Another miraculous feature of mother‘s milk is the fact
that it is exceedingly beneficial for the baby to be fed
with it for two years. This important information, only
recently discovered by science, was revealed by Allah
fourteen centuries ago in the verse: “Mothers should
nurse their children for two full years—those who
wish to complete the full term of
nursing…‖ (Qur‘an, 2:233)
In the same way that the mother does not decide to
produce milk, the most ideal source of nourishment
for the helpless baby in need of feeding in her body,
neither does she decide on the various nutritional
levels within it. It is Almighty Allah, Who knows the
needs of and displays mercy to every living thing,
Who creates mother‘s milk for the baby in the
mother‘s body.
1. My hands are small; please don't expect
perfection whenever I make my bed, draw a picture
or throw a ball. My legs are short; please slow down
so that I can keep up with you.
2. My eyes have not seen the world as yours have;
please let me explore safely; don't restrict me
unnecessarily.
3. Housework will always be there. I'm only little for
such a short time-please take the time to explain
things to me about this wonderful world and do so
willingly.
4. My feelings are tender; please be sensitive to my
needs; don't nag me all day long. (You wouldn't
want to be nagged for your inquisitiveness). Treat me as you would like to be treated.
5. I am a special gift; please treasure me as my Creator intended you to do, holding me accountable
for my actions, giving me guidelines to live by and disciplining me in a loving manner. 6. I need your
encouragement, not just your praise to grow. Please go easy on the criticism; you can criticize the
things I do without criticizing me.
7. Please give me the freedom to make decisions concerning myself. Permit me to fail, so that I can
learn from my own mistakes. Then someday I will be prepared to make the kind of decisions life will
require of me.
8. Please don't do things over for me. Somehow that makes me feel that my efforts didn't quite
Ahadeeth About Women
Rasulullah said: "When a woman offers her five times Salaah, keeps the fasts
of Ramadhan, safeguards her honour, and obeys her husband; she can enter
Jannah from whichever door she wishes."
Rasulullah said: "Allah's mercy descends on a woman who wakes up for
Tahajjud and awakens her husband as well."
A person said to Rasulullah : "O Rasulullah ! A certain woman offers plenty
of nafl Salaah, fasts abundantly and gives a lot in charity. However she causes
much verbal harm to her neighbours." He replied: "She will go into Jahannam."
The same person then said: "A certain woman does not offer many nafl Salaah,
does not fast abundantly nor does she give a lot in charity; she merely gives
pieces of panîr (a type of cheese) in charity. However she does not cause any
harm to her neighbours." He replied: "She will go into Jannah."
Salatul Awwabeen
(Nafl prayers of Maghrib)
After the Farz and Sunnat of Maghrib,
performance of the minimum of 6 to a
maximum of 20 rakaats is called Salatul
Awwaabeen.
Rasulullah mentioned, "Whoever
performs 6 Rak'aats after Maghrib Salaat
will earn the reward of 12 years of Nafl
Ibaadat." (Tirmidhi)
STORIES OF PIOUS WOMEN
Maulana Ashraf Ali Thanwi (Rahmatullahi Alayh)
The Mother of Haysur
Haysur is the same boy who has been mentioned in the last issue. You have also read that the Quran has
mentioned his parents as believers. The person whom Allah refers to as a believer cannot be any ordinary
believer who does not have strong Imaan. It is obvious that such a person must be very strong in his Imaan.
We can therefore deduce that Haysur's mother must have been very pious as well.
Lesson: Look! Having strong Imaan is such a great thing that Allah praised such persons. O women!
Strengthen your Imaan. This can be only done by following the orders of Allah and abstaining from sins.
Ramadhan
Ramadhan is the month in which the Qur’an was revealed to prophet Muhammad . Allah has commanded
Muslims to fast during this month and do many good deeds.
It is such a special month that if we do a good deed, we will be rewarded many times more for it. To
make it easier, Allah has chained the Shayaateen so that they cannot influence us into bad things.
In this month, Allah opens the doors of mercy and forgiveness. Allah invites us to repent so that he can
forgive us all. At night time, we have special prayers — Taraweeh — which we don't perform any other
time of the year. In this month there is a special night called Laylatul Qadr which is more better than a
thousand months.
WHAT TO DO IN RAMADHAN
During Ramadhan, Prophet Muhammad used to
recite the Qur'an to Angel Jibraeel. The angel
used to recite the Qur’an back to the prophet
as well.
We too should recite the Qur’an in abundance
during Ramadhan
The Prophet was most generous during the
month of Ramadhan. Many people pay their Zakah
in Ramadhan.
We too should be very charitable and generous
in Ramadhan.
There is a special prayer called Taraweeh which
the Muslims perform every Ramadhan.
We should pray our Taraweeh every night and
never miss any of our five Salaah.
Ramadhan is a month of change. A month of
goodness and a month of Peace.
Take this opportunity to change our lives and
develop good manners, habits and character.
The Prophet told us to look out for Laylatul Qadr
- it has immense reward and blessing.
Lets take advantage of Laylatul Qadr and spend
the whole night in worship, dua and prayer.
Make the permanent change in your life.
Permanently leave all negative habits such as
backbiting, swearing, fighting and other bad
a actions… these must not be found in a good
18 Muslim.
ACTIONS TO AVOID IN RAMADHAN
To avoid all bad and negative Behaviour. Even
getting angry, arguing and bad language should be
avoided.
If one is fasting, he should not speak rude or act
indecently. If someone swears at you or wants to
fight with you, you should reply ―I am fasting!‖
SOME BENEFITS OF FASTING ARE:
* Whilst fasting, we appreciate food and drink
more and understand how people with no food feel.
* The stomach gets a rest from a whole years
work.
* Improves patience and will-power.
* Reminds us that Allah is always watching
* Gives us reward and takes us towards Jannah.
WHY DO WE FAST
There are many benefits of fasting to our health
and well-being. The reason we fast is so that we
gain Taqwa and patience. We become better,
sincere and pious Muslims.
ACTIONS TO DO IN RAMADHAN:
Whilst fasting we should do as many good deeds as
we can. We should read more Qur’an, be regular in
our prayers and be kind and helpful to our
teachers, elders and parents.
WHAT BREAKS THE FAST?
The fast is broken if we eat or drink whilst we are
fasting.(If we accidentally eat or drink our fast
does not break.)
Story About Sinning Whilst Fasting
Once a man came to the prophet Muhammad and told him about two fasting women. He said that these
two women were close to death due to thirst.
The Prophet asked for the two women to be brought to Him. Both women were brought before Prophet
Muhammad and he requested that a bowl also be brought.
The Prophet instructed the two women to vomit into the bowl. Much to the surprise of everyone, meat
blood and puss was seen going into the bowl. After the women finished vomiting the bowl was full!
The Prophet explained to the people that the two women had kept their fast (had eaten suhoor) with
food that Allah had made halaal for them. The women had then broken their fast with that which Allah
had made Haram for them.
The Prophet further explained that this Haram was referring to the fact that both these women had
sat and talked about people - backbiting – which is like eating the flesh of people.
We learn from this incident that backbiting is an evil action and we should refrain from it. This is
especially so in Ramadhan where all these bad habits should be kicked out of our lives.
Youth Page
20
My dear friends of Allah, if Allah gives us 60 years to
live then it comes to around 22,000 days (60x365). All
these days Allah gives us to prepare for one day of
interview with Allah. That is on the Day of Judgement.
On that day, Allah will ask us some questions and He
wants some correct answers. Allah is so merciful that
He already told us what the questions will be through
Quran and Ahaadith. His mercy is so great that He
even told us the answers to these questions.
Now imagine, a student goes to write an exam. He
opens his exam paper and finds the questions on one
side. Then he finds that the answers to the questions
are on the other side. Now after writing the exam, if
this student still fails then what would we think of him?
We would think that he is the
dumbest person around.
Well, tell you what, on the
Day of Judgement, us
people who knew the
questions and answers will
still fail! That is why, this is
the time to wake up before
we prove ourselves to be
the dumbest of people.
Youth is the prime time of our lives. This is where
people make important decisions like what to become
in the future. Things you do in this time will most likely
affect you throughout the rest of your life. That is why,
it is important to bring Islam into your life during these
days. Many people have the conception that when
they get old then they will start practising Islam.
Probably you and me also have this feeling.
But look at it this way:
Things you do in
this time will most
likely affect you
throughout the
rest of your life.
If you want to become a famous football player then
you would start playing right from the youth. As you
The Blessing of Time
Hasan Al-Basri said, “Every day the sun rises it calls upon
us, “Oh people! I am a new day; I am an observer of your
actions. Take advantage of me for I will not return until the
Day of Judgment. Oh, son of Adam you are nothing but a
few breaths. Once one breath goes out, part of you goes with
it. In the same way that part of you has gone, soon all of you
will go.”
Ibn Mas'ud said, “I never regretted anything except a day
that passed by without having increased my deeds.”
grow up, you will become better and better. But if you
think that you will start playing when you are an old
man then the chances of becoming famous is virtually
zero. That's the reality. When we become old, we won't
have enough energy to even stand up and pray.
Because youth is the prime time of your life, that is
why it is very precious to Allah. Allah has prepared a
shade on the Day of Judgement for those people who
used to worship Allah in their youth. On that Day, there
will be no other shade except the shade from the
throne of Allah. Imagine standing outside on a very hot
day under the sun for hours after hours. You would
definitely want some shadow to rest under. But what
about that Day when the sun will be much nearer to us
and the heat will be much more extreme. Wouldn't you
want some shade on that day? Of course you would!
You and I are all weak in terms of keeping our duties
to Allah and Allah is aware of that. Allah wants that we
keep trying to do our best. If a baby falls down while
walking he tries to get up again and walk. He doesn't
keep sitting down. Then a day comes when he does
start to walk. Similarly, we should keep trying our best
and not give up. A day will come when, Inshallah, we
will be strong enough to obey Allah in every situation.
Let us make a small promise to Allah right now that we
will start doing the things for which we were sent to this
life. Otherwise, we will be like that dumb guy who will
fail the test on the Day of Judgement.
May Allah make it easy for us. Ameen
Six Fasts in the Month of
Shawwal
It is commendable to keep six fasts in the month of
Shawwal. The Holy Prophet has said:
“Whoever completes the fasts of Ramadhan
then adds to them the fasts of six days in the
month of Shawwal, it will carry the thawab of
fasting for the whole year.” (Sahih Muslim)
This Hadith had described the great thawab of six
fasts of this month. The scholars have interpreted
this Hadith by saying that according to the
recognised rules of Shari‗ah, every good deed is
rewarded ten times more thawab of its origin,
therefore, the thawab of 30 days of Ramadhan
amounts to the thawab for 300 days. If the fasts of
Ramadhan are followed by six more fasts, they
carry the thawab of 60 days more, raising the
aggregate thawab to 360 which is the number of
dais in one year according to the Islamic calendar.
Therefore, the Muslims should take this
opportunity of acquiring such an enormous reward
from Allah. It is more preferable to start these fasts
from the 2nd of Shawwal and keep fasting up to
the 7th of Shawwal. However, if they are kept in
other days, it is hoped that the requirement of the
above Hadith may also be fulfilled.
