COLLEGE SOFTBALL: REGION XIX TOURNAMENT
Skylanders cap
successful season
By Herald Staff
EDISON — The Sussex
County Community College
Softball season came to a bittersweet
end Saturday.
The Skylanders were eliminated
from the Region XIX
Division II Junior College
Tournament by Camden County
College 4-3, a day after winning
what coach Nick DeGennaro
called the biggest game in the
history of the program.
On Friday, the Skylanders
knocked off the 12-time Region
XIX champion, No.1Brookdale.
Down by one in the top of seventh,
sophomore Kristen Rath’s
double to the warning track
sparked a three-run comeback.
Kelly Apgar tied the score with
an RBI single.
“I’ve never been more proud
of any team I’ve coached in my
entire life,” DeGennaro said.
“We didn’t earn a metal but
every one of those girls are
champions. I’ve never coached
a team with more heart or that
showed more courage.”
Sussex lost in the semi-final
to the eventual champion
Gloucester Community College
4-3 friday.
“It would have been so easy
for them to give up,”
DeGennaro said. “They could
have woke up and said there’s
no way we can win these three
games in a row.”
