the last “Did Ja 

Know” article in TRAD- 

ERS GUIDE OF TEXAS (in 

last week’s issue)? 

Saltglaze is today’s 

topic. Glaze is the shiny 

surface found on pottery 

used for food service, 

and saltglaze is one type 

of such glaze. 

Earthenware, which is 

porous, allows food to react with the 

clay used in the production of the 

of Texas 

crockery. A simple way to prevent the 

tainting of foods was and still is to 

saltglaze crockery during its second 

firing. 

This process is simply the warming 

of ordinary table or rock salt and 

throwing the salt into the kiln as soon 

as the temperature in the kiln reaches 

2,200 degrees F. 

As I understand it, the 

front of the kiln gets the 

hottest and produces a 

clear, hard, grayish-white 

glaze that has a pebbly 

feel to it: an orange-peel 

texture. 

The back of the kiln 

may be as much as 200 

degrees cooler and the 

finished glaze will be milkier than the

A beautiful Chocolate Lab female finally 

made her way into our arms. We had 

tried to catch her on the ranch a few 

weeks ago, but she ran away. So we did 

what we always do. We prayed that God 

would take care of her and hoped that 

we would see her again. Cocoa is so 

precious and gentle. She is an adult Lab, 

about 2 years old, who was probably 

used for breeding and then tossed on 

the road. She’s gentle with other dogs 

and not a jumper. You will just fall in love 

with her at first sight. She is not especially 

energetic and would probably 

make a great companion for an older 

household. Cocoa is still on the thin side 

and is slowly coming into her own again.

Dear Mom: The 3 of us puppies, 2 shepherd 

mixes and 1 boxer mix, have been 

at Camp Kennel Pup for four weeks now. 

They took us one by one into the office 

the other day and got to know us. We 

really settle down and each one of us like 

to be hugged. We all grunt a little bit and 

can’t get enough of that snuggle time. 

They hold us and we don’t want to go 

back to the Kennels, though! Still, kennels 

are fun because we all bunk together, 

eat twice a day, get snacks and have 

2 play times, but as puppies we are anxious

other day they dewormed us and gave us 

shots. That was a load of fun, not! They 

have a pool here and they let us swim in

Lilah is a real gem of a dog. We recently 

took her out in the country to visit a little 

boy. He is almost 4. She gently licked him in 

the face several times and just followed the 

family around all afternoon. At the encouragement 

of our hostess, she jumped up on 

the couch and took a nap. She snored just 

a little bit. It had been a big day! Our little 

doll is so precious! She had never even 

been in a house and did just fine. The slick 

pine floors were a trick at first! Lilah is very 

smart and already housebroken. She is 

crate-trained and already spayed. We think 

she is one of the best dogs we have had in 

the kennels in a long time. The Lord must 

be saving her for a special family. She loves 

children and other dogs. She likes to be 

held if she’s going in the car or in a crate.

Lab! He is so gorgeous and loves everyone. 

Gentle, highly social and sweet by nature, 

Rocky would be a wonderful family dog. You

Truth be told, he’s a big furry child! He is the 

kind of dog that will do well knowing that he

Gen. Chesty Puller asks, ‘How many Chinese are there?’ 

Marvin Myers is a former Marine 

and Korean War veteran. While serving 

with the 1st Marine Division in 

Korea in 1951, he wrote more than 

200 pages of letters to his parents. 

The letters and pictures in this 

series were kept in a cardboard box 

(time capsule) until May 2005, when 

opened and viewed for the first time in 

decades. This series is based on these 

letters plus Mr. Myers’ personal recollections. 

Mr. Myers is a member of the East 

Texas chapter of the Korean War 

Veterans’Association (KWVA), which 

welcomes Korea veterans who served 

from 1950 to the present and associate 

members who may be interested 

in supporting the KWVA.

Jon Hoffman’s well-researched 

and documented book Chesty: 

The Story of Lieutenant General 

Lewis B. Puller, USMC, he tells a 

story about Chesty during the week of 

April 22, 1951. 

(Chesty Puller, you’ll recall, was 

the most-decorated and most-beloved 

U.S. marine in history.) Col. Hoffman 

writes: 

“The Chinese offensive gave rise 

to one new tale about Puller. As the 

debacle [the cratering of the ROK] 

unfolded on the left flank of the division, 

Chesty supposedly contacted 

the headquarters of the disintegrating 

ROK [Republic of Korea] outfit to 

determine the strength of the attacking 

enemy. 

“A Korean answered: ‘Oh, many, 

many, many!’ 

“The ADC [adjutant division commander] 

spoke to another ROK officer 

and received a similar reply. 

“Finally he got through to the 

young Marine officer acting as liaison 

with the Allied division. 

“The lieutenant, equally excited in 

the midst of the confusion, blurted 

out: ‘A whole damn pot full, sir.’ 

Puller finally was satisfied: ‘Well, I’m 

glad someone up there can count!’ ” 

The Chinese 5th Offensive had 

begun. 

Dovetails nicely 

Gen. Chesty Puller, ADC 1st Marine 

Division, was true to his word. 

Marines would never retreat nor pull 

back unless ordered to do so. 

We would be ordered to do so several 

times in the coming weeks. 

Much of Col. Hoffman’s detailed 

history of the Marine personnel in 

Korea dovetails nicely with my letters 

and firsthand remembrances of 55 

years ago.

“Dearest Mom,

“I guess the Chinks broke through 

the Army, or at least that’s what they 

say. 

“Night before last the South 

Koreans [ROK army] gave way.”

“On the night of April 22, the PLA 

(People’s Liberation Army [the 

Chinese]) launched its long-awaited 

spring offensive. (PLA and CCF used 

interchangeably.) 

“Attacks came all along the UN 

line, but the major blow fell upon the 

6th ROK (Republic of Korea) Division 

on the immediate left of the 1st 

Marine Division. 

“Before midnight the Koreans 

were shattered and streaming toward 

the rear. 

“Smith (General O.P.) promptly 

got the 1st Marines (Puller’s old outfit) 

out of reserve and into position to 

cover his flank.”

“I heard today that an Army unit 

folded also. 

“The 7th (Marine) Regiment is out 

in front—further than any other unit, 

so I hear.”

“7th Marines and the KMC 

(Korean Marine Corps) Regiment 

fought off large-scale assaults to the 

front.” 

Chopped and dicey 

Me again: 

“I think the Chinese are trying to 

cut off our supply line again. They 

(CCF) are supposed to be closer to 

Chunchon than we are. They (CCF) 

are supposed to be almost to Hongchon.

“The Army artillery (as opposed to 

11th Marine Artillery two days ago) is 

set up right here with us, so I imagine 

we’ll be serenaded tonight [again]. 

“I turned in my cold-weather gear 

yesterday. I’m traveling lighter. All I

and helmet, is the top part of my 

pack (haversack or knapsack) and a 

waterproof bag. (The latter for 

matches, socks, foot powder, firstaid 

kit with water-purification tablets, 

toiletries, wallet, small Bible, 

camera, pad with two wooden pencils 

and a folding can opener called a 

P-38. I did have a seabag but never 

opened it unless we were going to be

“I have some ROK friends here. 

One of them is a doctor who graduated 

from Seoul Medical College. He 

gave me some salve for my rash. It’s 

better. [It stopped my itch and rash, 

which I caught from the Korean 

equivalent of poison ivy.] 

“The artillery was really going full 

blast last night at our old CP [command 

post] at Sapyong-ni. 

“I guess I wouldn’t even [have] 

heard it [if] my rash hadn’t started 

itching. 

“Tell everyone hello.” 

Handwritten P.S.: “Still sleep 

heavy. 

“Jimmy.” 

No strain but much pain 

In the following letter to my dad, I 

related a somewhat different rendition 

of the same circumstances. 

“Letter No. 16 

“About 5 mi. north of Chunchon 

“25 April 1951 

“Dad, 

“Well, the 5th Marines [Regiment] 

have been committed so I guess we’re 

about 10 miles or more from the actual 

front. [The ‘actual front’ was on 

three sides, with the CCF trying hard 

to close the fourth side.] 

“The Army artillery is set up here 

with us here, but it’s no strain for 

them to fire 15 to 20 miles. 

“We moved south about 8 miles 

yesterday. 

“Gen. Thomas is supposed to be 

here today to relieve Gen. [O.P.] 

Smith. They were supposed to have a 

ceremony for him, but I guess the tactical 

situation doesn’t permit that now. 

“Gen. Thomas is supposed to look 

over all of the camp when he gets 

here.” 

From Col. Hoffman’s book, pages 

435-436: 

“Jerry Thomas, promoted to major 

general in the fall of 1950, had arrived 

in theater to replace Smith. Puller met 

him at the airfield on the afternoon of 

April 25, and escorted him to the CP 

[command post].” 

Me to Dad again: 

“The Chinese (CCF army) are supposed 

to be further south (on both 

flanks) than we are. 

“They’re almost to Hongchon and 

we’re still north of Chunchon. 

“I’d better get back to work. 

“Jimmy.” 

(The KMC, which was trained by 

U.S. marines and fought alongside 

marines, consistently made a better 

showing of themselves than our lesswell-trained 

allies, the ROK.) 

Serious situation 

Was the situation serious? 

Hell, yes, it was serious. 

The enemy wanted to surround us 

and kill us. They wanted to annihilate 

the 1st Marine Division. That was 

their stated goal. That was a given. 

On the positive side, every marine, 

I knew, had absolute and total faith in

our command leadership and Gen. 

Smith and Gen. Puller. 

These men had led the 1st Marine 

Division successfully through the 

Inchon landing, the slog through 

Seoul and the escape from the Chosin 

Reservoir in the dead of winter. 

We instinctively knew they would 

get us out of this temporary, by comparison, 

bind. 

On the western front, the CCF 

armies were very near Seoul for the 

second time. It was the CCF’s main 

objective to retake the capital, Seoul. 

On the same parallel, we were far 

north of Seoul. [See maps this week 

and last week.] 

Moving experience 

During this time, even when we 

were moving every other day, I never 

had a sense of dread or felt our movements 

were in any way panicky. 

It was long hours, hard physical 

work, but everything was by the numbers, 

well ordered, planned and 

orchestrated. 

Comments from our commanding 

general that, “hell, we’re not retreating; 

we’re just attacking in a different 

direction,” may have been true, but 

that did not alter the facts. 

Call it what you will, a retreat is a 

retreat. 

The first line of my letter to my 

mom on April 24, 1951, said it all: 

“Today we advanced to the rear.”

Where there’s a wheel, there’s a way

hotter-fired pieces and may have a 

coarser orange-peel texture. 

The salt is vaporized by the heat, 

releasing its sodium to react with silica 

in the clay and create a glasslike 

surface on the crockery. 

But throwing salt in the kiln glazes 

only the outside of the taller or deeper 

pieces. 

This leaves the inside in need of a 

finish on these taller and deeper 

crocks, jugs, jars, churns, etc. 

Newfangled slipglaze 

Did ja know potters would pour 

and dip these pieces in a solution 

made of clay and water? 

This is called “slipglaze.” Clay is 

dug and mixed with large quantities 

of water, then stirred and allowed to 

settle. 

Then the top two thirds of this mixture 

is decanted (poured off), leaving 

a liquid clay to be used to coat the 

interior of the pots. 

(The Hudson River Valley was the 

first to commercially mine clay for 

the production of Albany slipglaze.) 

Saltglaze becomes rare 

Did ja know that most potters 

stopped using the saltglaze method by 

the 1830s and began using slipglaze 

to make the pots waterproof? No 

wonder collectors covet those wonderful 

old saltglazed pieces. 

Many of our Texas potters saltglazed 

their pottery. In my research, 

Meyer Potters made their own slipglaze, 

using the Albany glaze only for 

special orders. They also continued in 

the traditional German technique of 

saltglazing for a longer time than 

other Eastern potters. 

As I read about Meyer Potters, I 

learned that the clay used in Texas is 

best found along the Wilcox geological 

formation, which runs diagonally 

across the state from the East Texas 

counties of Titus, Cass, Bowie, 

Smith, Harrison, Rusk, Henderson, 

Limestone and Bastrop to South 

Texas in Bexar, Wilson and Guadaloupe 

counties. 

No wonder we find wonderful 

pieces in our area. In 1850, 12 potters 

were operating in Texas. 

I hope that after reading this article 

you can add to my knowledge of our 

potters and correct any of my misunderstandings 

of the industry. 

Indians were here first 

Did ja know that the original native 

Americans made earthenware long 

before the settlers? 

In East Texas the Caddo Indians 

have a rich history of pottery-making. 

Many of their beautiful earthenware 

pots and other vessels can be seen at 

the Upshur County Museum, on the 

square in Gilmer. 

Take a Saturday to visit this fine 

museum. 

Make the scene 

Did ja know that the Lord tells us 

not to hide our light under a basket, 

but to set it in a vessel in a high place 

so that all may see? A vessel is a piece 

of crockery. Be seen for His sake!
