How time flies when you are having fun 

and staying busy. February began with the 

Florida Visitation. It was so nice to spend a few 

days in warmer weather and see so many of 

our Snowbirds. We had a 

great time and I really appreciate 

the hospitality shown to 

us by Lin & Betty Coner, Bob 

& Sue Coner, Bill & Thelma 

Blankenship, and Mike & 

Candy Close. 

As this March magazine 

is being delivered, the 

63rd Murat Shrine Circus will 

be well underway. I want to 

thank all of you who sold 

ads, bought ads, bought circus 

coupons, and volunteered your time to 

work at one or more of the performances. I am 

so pleased with the ad sales this year. The circus 

is our largest fundraiser and we want to 

continue this great tradition. Thank you one 

and all! I want to give a special thank you to 

Ted Crosley for stepping up as the 2008 Circus 

Director following the untimely passing of Larry 

Selig. It’s not an easy job and I appreciate the 

time and effort he put forth in helping us. 

Remember, the Ringmaster’s Banquet is April 5 

at Murat. If you worked three or more shows, 

you may attend for free. For others, the cost is 

$20 per person. 

The second year of our Calendar Raffle 

appears to be going very well. Over half of the 

calendars have been sold and we want to try 

and sell them all. It’s not too late to buy one. 

They are $25 and the winners are drawn at the 

end of every month. You have a chance to win 

every day … but you can’t win if you don’t 

have a Murat Calendar. Get one in the Murat 

Office or see a Club/Unit member. 

Membership is very important to me. I 

have been a member of Murat for over 30 years 

and it is hard to believe how much membership 

has gone down. This year we have had to 

suspend over 400 members for not paying their 

dues. We have got to turn things around and 

start increasing our numbers. The future of 

Murat depends on membership. 

“Nobles … Create in ’08.” You have heard 

my slogan more than once and you will hear it 

again. There will be four 

opportunities to increase 

Murat’s membership in 2008. 

The first is this month, on 

Saturday, March 8. Grand 

Master Duane Vaught is having 

“All the Way in One Day” 

at the Scottish Rite. It will 

include the First Section and, 

hopefully, those new Nobles 

will join us in July to receive 

the Second Section. We are 

planning a Hot Sands 

Ceremonial on Saturday, July 12, to be held at 

Murat. 

In the fall, a One-Day Class is scheduled 

for Saturday, October 18, at Murat. 

The last date to “Create in ’08” will be on 

December 13. It will be a Hot Sands 

Ceremonial at Murat. 

Nobles, please get a petition or two and 

help Murat find some new members. Not only 

will new members help Murat, they will help all 

of the children in our Shrine Hospitals. 

I hope you will participate in one or more 

of these opportunities to bring in new Nobles. 

There are a couple of events to be thinking 

about that will be here soon. Kerbela Fun 

Fest is May 1-3. Please contact the office if you 

are planning to join us in Pigeon Forge. 

Also, the Imperial Potentate will be visiting 

Murat in May. We are planning a special 

evening on Friday, May 23, so mark your calendars 

and look for details in April’s magazine.

Helen Lemieux Leaves a Legacy 

Helen Coe Lemieux, who served 

as First Lady of Shriners of North 

America during the 2007-2008 Imperial 

Year, passed away on January 1, 2008. 

Mrs. Lemieux was born in 

Mishawaka, IN, on November 7, 1942. 

She was a graduate of Purdue University 

in Indiana with a bachelor of science in 

home economics and a master of science 

in textile and food research. She 

taught home economics in public 

schools in Indiana and Ohio, ultimately 

joining the faculty of Bowling Green 

State University. She began night school 

at the University of Toledo College of 

Law during her final year at Bowling 

Green State University. 

Mrs. Lemieux practiced law in 

Ohio for approximately 35 years and 

specialized in family law and probate. 

She was one of the first female attorneys 

in northern Ohio and became a leader 

among her peers. Mrs. Lemieux was 

known to be firm and to have a complete 

knowledge and understanding of 

the subject at hand. She could not be 

intimidated and was undaunted in her 

approach, and yet she was always fair 

and reasonable. Everyone knew her to 

be gracious no matter the circumstances 

and she never lost her composure. She 

showed respect for the clients and her

fellow attorneys and was a real joy to 

deal with at all times. She had great 

expertise and even taught seminars to 

her peers. 

In addition to her legal career, Mrs. 

Lemieux owned and operated a wire 

service floral shop in Maumee, OH, for 

seven years. Her educational background 

and the flower shop were foundations 

for her assistance in developing 

educational seminars for Shriners of 

North America. 

She is survived by her husband,

Over the years, Mrs. Lemieux 

demonstrated her dedication to Zenobia 

Shriners and Shriners of North America 

through a variety of programs, events 

and projects. Her fund-raising program, 

“Research – Straight to the Heart,” provides 

scholarships for a summer internship 

program for medical students at 

Shriners Hospitals. The scholarship program, 

with an emphasis on research, 

will increase medical students’ awareness 

of the exciting, important work 

being done at Shriners Hospitals and, 

ideally, entice them to become part of 

the team. 

Another of Mrs. Lemieux’s recent 

achievements was leading the development 

of a children’s book, Granny 

Uncovers Miracles at Shriners Hospitals 

for Children, to support her program. 

Donors receive a copy of the children’s 

book for each contribution of $25. 

Shriners of North America and 

Shriners Hospitals for Children are truly 

grateful for Mrs. Lemieux’s many years 

of service to our organization. She will 

be greatly missed by her family, friends, 

and her Shriners family.

2008 Membership Plans 

A R T B O R T O N 

March is here and we are 

already planning our first ceremonial 

of the year. Saturday, 

March 8, will be a Cold Sands ceremonial 

at the Scottish Rite in accordance 

with the Grand Master’s “All the Way in 

One Day” class. A person who has 

been investigated and accepted by his 

Lodge will be able to get all three Blue 

Lodge degrees, two degrees of the 

Scottish Rite, and the First Section of 

the Shrine initiation–all in one day. 

This is also a chance to complete the 

work for any brother who has started 

through the Blue Lodge degrees but 

has failed to complete them. Help him 

finish his Blue Lodge degrees, and 

bring him into Murat. 

We will be conducting another “All 

the Way in One Day” class on October 

18, which will be conferred at the Murat 

Shrine. 

We will also conduct two traditional 

Hot Sands ceremonials this year on 

July 12 and December 13. These will be 

at Murat. 

There are plenty of opportunities 

to create new Shriners at our ceremonials. 

Remember, if you have 25 or more 

candidates, we will put on our 

Ceremonial Road Show and bring the 

ceremonial to your Club. 

February, March, and April will be 

busy times as well, as we are reorganizing 

our calling committee to contact all 

the Shriners who have been suspended 

for non-payment of dues. They will be 

contacted directly and reminded about 

the work we do with the children, and 

we will try to get them back into the fraternity. 

We are going to have a busy year 

as we look to “Create in 2008,” but we 

are planning on having fun as well. If 

you would like to help our Membership 

efforts this year, please give me a call or 

send me an email and we will help get 

you involved. Thanks in advance for all 

your help.

I find it hard to write about activities as though they have happened when they really 

haven’t! I am writing this March article on February 1, so I can’t write about the Ball, 

Ladies Night Out or the circus. You will just have to wait until next month! 

I can tell you that the Ladies of the Oriental Shrine had a “Souper Supper” the Friday 

night before the Super Bowl. Everything I tasted was delicious! They have this every year 

on the Friday before the big game. (I missed it last year because Ron & I were at the Super 

Bowl watching our Colts!) They prepared many soups and had lots of desserts. The 

Hillbilly Band played and everyone had a good time. Thanks, ladies. 

I would like to talk about the Imperial Lady’s Project. As I mentioned last month, 

Helen Lemieux passed away in January. She began her research project at the Imperial 

Session last July and it will continue until next July when Imperial meets in St. Louis. 

Helen’s fund-raising program is entitled, “Research – Straight to the Heart.” It is 

intended to provide scholarships for internship opportunities to students in the medical and 

healthcare areas. Students selected will work in our Shriners Hospitals research facilities. 

Helen strongly believed that today’s research is the key to tomorrow’s medicine. 

To raise money for her project, Helen had a book written that can be purchased for 

$25. The book, Granny Uncovers Miracles at Shriners Hospitals for Children, is very 

informative, as Granny sees the many miracles at Shriners Hospitals unfold before her very 

eyes. I love the illustrations, especially the animals, Preppy & Goo. It is an appropriate book 

for adults as well as children. Not only did she want us to purchase them and spread the 

word, but it was Helen’s hope to get these books into the waiting rooms of children’s physicians 

so others could learn about Shriners Hospitals. We have books in the office if you 

would like to buy one and help her cause. If you do read one, make sure you notice what 

Granny is wearing. 

Ladies, Wednesday, April 2, is the Ladies Card Party and Luncheon. Doors will open 

at 10 a.m., so come down and play cards or any game of your choice. We will eat around 

noon, give away some door prizes, and then we can continue to play cards until they tell 

us to leave. I believe a couple of ladies’ organizations meet that evening, so you can make 

a real day of it! 

Friday, April 4, Smyrna is hosting a Viva Las Vegas Party at the Gun Club with dinner, 

games and dancing. Look for more information in the Smyrna article. 

Saturday, April 5, is the Ringmaster’s Banquet. If you have worked three or more 

performances at the circus, then your dinner is free. For anyone who didn’t, but you would 

like to attend, the cost is $20 per person. Please RSVP by calling Sherri (635-2433) in the 

Shrine Office. 

May will be here before we know it, so mark your calendars for Kerbela Fun Fest, 

May 1-3, down in Pigeon Forge, TN. Contact the office if you are planning to go. The 

Imperial Potentate will be at Murat for dinner on Friday, May 23. We are planning something 

different this year. Details will come later. 

May you have a fun St. Patrick’s Day and a blessed Easter. Hope to see many of you 

on April 2 at the Card Party.

“Our Family Loves Your 

Hospitals”

Bill and Geneva Rhinehart were happy 

when they learned they would have 

twins. Jennifer and Jonathan were 

born prematurely in January 1999 and each 

weighed slightly more than two pounds. It 

was apparent at birth the twins might develop 

leg problems. 

The twins’ sister, Debbie, spoke with us 

during the Murat Children’s Christmas party. 

She told us Jennifer’s problems were noticed 

when she was unable to roll over or crawl at 

the age most children can. Jennifer was accepted 

as a patient at Shriners Hospital in Chicago 

and has made 10 trips to the hospital. Debbie 

says, “Dr. Peter Smith is a very good doctor. 

He replaced both of Jennifer’s hips and 

explained everything to us. We are not certain 

if Jennifer can walk yet, but she improves every day. We are 

hopeful she will walk after she has more physical therapy and 

gains strength. The surgery removed the pain Jennifer was 

having and she is much happier now.” 

Debbie says, “Shriners are super nice. The hospital is 

great and it has helped Jennifer so much. We love all the 

drivers who have taken her to the hospital. They are very 

friendly and helpful. Even the patients at the hospital are 

friendly. Sometimes they help Jennifer get into 

and out of her wheel chair. Jennifer became a 

very close friend of her roommate and developed 

friendships with many other patients. We 

are very thankful for the Shriners and their hospitals.” 

Debbie adds, “Jonathan’s problems are not 

as bad as Jennifer’s, but he recently began having 

severe leg pain. A local doctor said he was 

simply having growing pains and would outgrow 

the problem. Because Jonathan is 

Jennifer’s twin, we wanted a second opinion on 

his leg pain. He was accepted as a patient at 

Shriners Hospital in Lexington and has been 

examined there. He had X rays and blood work 

in Lexington, and we are waiting for the doctor’s 

diagnosis.” 

Debbie thanked us for inviting the family to the 

Christmas party and said, “Our family loves your hospitals. I 

think it is just wonderful that your hospitals are so kind and 

caring, and that there is no charge for the great 

treatment you give. I don’t know what we would have done 

without your great hospitals. We thank all the Shriners for 

helping our family.”

At our December meeting, we had another new member 

join the Patrol; welcome to the Club, Chris Lawson. We 

also had the election of officers for 2008. I would like to 

thank the officers from 2007 for a great year: President Scott 

Eder, Vice President Ray Miller, Secretary Jim Monroe, 

Treasurer Ron Fannin, Captain Mike Long, and Quartermaster 

Dick Monroe. Through the 2007 year we had an obstacle or 

two that we overcame; but looking back now, we had a pretty 

good year. We also learned of Bill Sparks’ brother, Robbie, 

being diagnosed with cancer – our thoughts and prayers go 

out to him and his family. 

We had another new member join the Patrol at our 

January meeting, and we welcome Lance Johnson to the Club. 

Our 2008 officers were sworn in by Divan member Jim Priest. 

They are President Ray Miller, Vice President Bill Sparks, 

Secretary Jim Monroe, Treasurer Ron Fannin, Captain Mike 

Long, and Quartermaster Wade Yensel. All of the 2008 officers 

have held an office in the Patrol in past years. Our thanks go 

out to Jim Harris, Phil Goodwin and Sam Thompson for the 

effort they put into making the Patrol Raffle a big success for 

the Club. Anyone who would like to join the Patrol, we meet 

the first Friday of the month at 7:30 p.m. 

Congratulations to Illustrious Ron Elliott, our 2008 Murat 

Potentate and his Divan. We are confident he has great plans 

for Shrinedom. 

The Veteran Car Club was pleased to have Bill Rasner, 

our new Outer Guard, install our 2008 officers and their wives 

at our first meeting of the New Year: Danny Thomas, 

President; Jim Lasley, Vice President; Claude (Bud) Forth, 

Secretary; and Fred Johnson, Treasurer. 

The Veteran Car Club was first asked to sell tickets for 

the rides and when it was decided to sell tokens instead, we 

adopted that project. The only change this year will be the 

tokens will sell for $2 instead of $1, thus making fewer tokens 

to carry. Our Unit is very proud to be a part of helping to 

make the circus a success. We enjoyed working with Circus 

Director Larry Selig and were saddened when he passed. We 

now look forward to working with Ted Crosley and forming 

an alliance with new and greater goals. 

There have been changes in our bylaws, the most 

notable one being that to parade with us the vehicle must be 

eligible for antique plates. We still do not require a member to 

have an old car to join our Unit. A liking of old cars is all that

Corvette Club 

Greetings Nobles and Ladies! 

Welcome to our newest member, Chip Mong. He will be 

attending functions and parades in one of his two – yes two – 

1978 “Indianapolis 500” pace cars. 

Corvette Trivia: 

1978 was the 25-year anniversary of the Corvette which 

supported commemorative emblems and special two-toned 

paint schemes. There were 6,502 pace car replicas built in ’78 

that were the black over silver paint scheme offering front and 

rear spoilers with the “Official Pace Car” decals and various 

other “500” decals, logos and badges. This year also offered 

two versions of the 350 CID engine; the L-48 @ 185 hp and 

the L-82 @ 220 hp. 

Chip is the proud owner of one of each of these special 

edition vehicles. 

Our February meeting was well attended and many discussions 

took place regarding the success of the Potentate’s 

Ball, the calendar sales, and the upcoming circus. The March 

meeting should be a packed house since most of the

events, schedules and functions for the balance of the year.

begins May 1. Last year was a fantastic turnout with 19 cars in 

the parade; however, let’s all plan to attend and make this the

Receives Magnet 

Recognition 

First Pediatric Hospital in Cincinnati to 

Receive Award 

The Cincinnati hospital was notified today they 

received Magnet recognition from the American 

Nurses Credentialing Center. 

The pediatric burn hospital has been working 

towards Magnet designation for several years. We are 

the first within the Shriners Hospitals for Children 

healthcare system to receive this prestigious award and 

the first pediatric hospital in the greater Cincinnati area 

to receive the honor. 

Recognizing quality patient care, nursing excellence, 

and innovations in professional nursing practice, 

the Magnet Recognition Program provides consumers 

with the ultimate benchmark to measure the quality of 

care they can expect to receive. Out of more than 5,000 

hospitals in the United States, only 275 have been 

awarded this recognition. 

“For many years, we have felt that our nursing 

care is truly exceptional,” states Angie Allen-Jackson, 

RN, MHA, director of patient care services at the 

Cincinnati hospital. “Receiving this award verifies that 

we deliver state-of-the-art, quality nursing care to our 

patients everyday. While this is a nursing award, it is a 

collaborative effort by all staff that brought us to this 

recognition.”

MANY THANKS – The recent Murat Children’s Christmas Party could not have 

been as successful without the help from local merchants. On behalf of Murat and 

the Transportation Club, we would like to thank the Meijer store on Southport Road

PLAQUE PROGRAM – At the January Stated Meeting, the Club membership 

voted to contribute $300 to Shriners Hospitals. We now have displayed on the 

“Wall of Plaques” at Murat the Transportation Club plaque in all its glory. Please 

drop by and take a look on the second floor across from the Arabian Room. 

SAFETY MEETINGS – The scheduled safety meetings for 2008 will be at the 

March, June, and October Stated Meetings. Please schedule to be in attendance at 

one or more of these meetings if you are a driver. 

PARADE SIGNS – The Club is looking into the purchase of signs to go on our 

vans during the several parades we attend during the year. This will help identify 

our Club and its mission of transporting hospital children and families to and from 

our hospitals. 

NEW VANS – Murat has ordered two new hospital vans from Noble Russ 

Dellen. Many thanks to Russ for his contribution to our efforts in transporting our 

children. 

SICK LIST – All the best goes out to Nobles Gerald Harrison and Carl Schnepf 

in their time of illness. 

WELCOME – The Club would like to welcome our newest member, David 

Asher. We invite David and all Club members to attend our meetings. Remember, 

the Club is involved in several Shrine activities beyond driving our patients. See

POTENTATE’S BALL – Saturday, February 9, was the Potentate’s Ball. The 

Club was well represented as we celebrated with our new Potentate, Ron Elliott, 

and Lady Sally Jo. 

This proved to be quite an extravaganza that our Potentate put together. 

RINGMASTER’S BANQUET – The 2008 rendition of the Murat Shrine Circus is 

almost a memory. For all those members and their ladies who worked at least three 

performances, you can attend the banquet compliments of Murat. Please make 

sure you sign in across the street from the coliseum for all the performances you 

work so you can get the proper credit in order to attend the banquet. 

PLAQUE PROGRAM – Our new mission is going well and there are several 

Clubs and Units, as well as individuals, who have signed up for a plaque. Now is 

the time to approach the other Clubs and Units and sell the plaques. Individuals 

and businesses are also a very important factor in making this effort successful. The 

very first Club to buy a plaque – the Kentucky Colonels, of course. 

KERBELA FUN FEST – For a really great time and good fellowship, plan to 

attend the annual pilgrimage to Pigeon Forge, TN, from May 1-4, 2008. There will 

be several Shrine temples in attendance with plenty of Shrine activities. A parade 

will be held on Saturday morning which will leave plenty of time for the ladies to 

“shop till they drop.” Check with the Fraternal Office for hotel reservations. 

NEW MEMBER – A big welcome to our newest member, Timothy 

Brinkmeyer. We invite Timothy to join us on the first Wednesday of the month for 

our Stated Meetings at 7 p.m. in the Mecca Room. Help support the Oasis Lounge 

by having dinner before the meeting. 

The Band got off to a rousing start 

with the installation of officers for 2008. 

The Presidents Party was held in the 

Corinthian Room. The Honorable Sir Ron 

Elliott did a great job installing Raymond 

G. Hauser, president. Ray is also conductor 

of the Band. Bret Reyburn was 

installed as vice president. Secretary- 

Treasurer Gary Selig was re-installed to 

that position. Members of the board of 

directors are: Don Bottles, Richard 

Blocker, and Jim Cox. Dr. Richard Beach 

is assistant conductor and librarian. 

We look forward to an exciting year 

with President Ray at the helm. Our first 

concert was January 30 at Greenwood 

Village. We played with the Franklin 

Township Middle School on February 13. 

We played six performances at the Shrine 

Circus and will do one or more concerts 

at the Masonic Home in Franklin. Likely 

appearances will be in St. Louis for the 

Imperial Council and Cincinnati for the 

GLSA convention. Scribe Leonard Hull 

will likely be back as his health improves. 

Southeastern 

Indiana Shrine Club

Spring is just around the corner 

and the Southeastern Indiana Shrine 

Club will be getting very busy soon. 

During 2008 we will hold several Paper 

Crusades and steak dinners, host a golf 

outing and a Club ceremonial, and participate 

in parades all over southeastern 

Indiana. We need as many Nobles as 

possible to participate so we can make 

all this happen. Our Club has been 

increasing its donations to Murat for the 

Paper Crusade every year, and it will 

take a lot of man-hours to surpass the 

$16,500 we raised last year. If you are 

not able to make it to the Club on meeting 

nights, make sure you stay in contact 

to find out how you can help. 

Don’t forget that the Club open 

house on the third Friday of each 

month now starts a little later. By serving 

dinner at 7 p.m. we hope to make 

it easier for Nobles who work to attend 

this Club function. We are also trying 

out the idea of menu “themes” for each 

dinner. Check your newsletter to find 

out what the fare will be each month.

Happy New Year from the Clowns! I know, I know, it is 

a little late, but nobody informed “Rudy” that it was his responsibility

The year 2007 was a great year for the Clown Unit. A large 

part of our success was due to our outgoing president, Chuck 

“Zero” Shull, and his lady, Pam. The Clowns thank you for your 

tireless dedication and leadership during 2007. Incoming President Phil “Q-Less” 

Christy has some big shoes to fill. (Pun intended) 

In December, the Clown Unit held their annual officer installation and 

Christmas dinner. The officers installed during the dinner were Phil “Q-Less” 

Christy (President), Chuck “Wrongway” Howard (President-Elect), Adam “Rudy” 

Rude (Vice President), Terry “Stinky” Boyer (Treasurer), and Rob “Dr. Floppy” 

Plummer (Business Manager). A great time was had by all. A big congratulations 

goes out to Terry “Stinky” Boyer for receiving the prestigious “Clown of the Year” 

award. The award goes to the clown who had the most appearances in 2007. The 

Clown Unit is proud to have such a dedicated Shriner in its ranks. Special thanks 

to the Hillbillies and Don “Cosmo” Waters for providing the entertainment. 

The Clown Unit is pleased to announce that we have two new applicant 

Clowns. Jerry Evans is a recruiter for the Air Force. He and his lady, Miranda, 

reside in Plainfield. Joe Plummer is a firefighter for the Wayne Township Fire

Greetings to all from the thin blue 

line for 2008. We want to thank all the 

2007 officers for their fine job. Since the 

first of the year, we have had a lot happen. 

We installed new officers for 2008. 

Jack Simpson is our new president, Ron 

Brown is the first vice president, Dennis 

Parks is the second vice president, and 

to our benefit, Randy West will remain 

our secretary-treasurer. Our Motorcycle 

Drill Team will be led this year by Ron 

Brown as commander, Steve Mellene as 

drill master, Willard Payne and Charles

Lowell Moss was selected as executive 

assistant. Thanks to all these Nobles for 

giving their time to serve our Clubs and 

fellow Nobles. 

We want to mention that our Clubs 

meet on the first Tuesday of the month 

at 7 p.m. We invite all Nobles to join us; 

you don’t have to be a police officer to 

be a member. Our Motorcycle Drill 

Team is in need of new members who 

enjoy riding motorcycles and have the 

time and desire to promote our noble 

cause in the public eye. When we 

parade, people are reminded of our children’s 

hospitals and this helps raise 

much needed funds. 

So please come join in the fun. 

The Shrine Circus is February 28 – March 

2 and our Clubs are responsible for 

security during the circus. We need all to 

help this year. Our needs start Thursday 

morning when the buses bring the children 

and we direct the parking of all 

those buses. We need Nobles to help 

and make sure all of the children are 

safe. We also are assigned during the circus 

to maintain security inside during 

the shows. Please give of your time this 

year so we can have a fun and safe circus. 

Jack Simpson and I are going to 

bring the Police Club and Drill Team 

together to help promote the Shrine. 

Please join us this year to do all we can 

to make our Shrine and Clubs the best 

we can be. 

Flying Fezzes 

Patrick DeCallier 

William Resia, one of our members, 

served aboard the USS Forrestal 

during the Vietnam conflict. He made 

a presentation of his experiences, 

including the death of 134 service 

members. He showed a film of the 

Forrestal that created chills in the members 

of our Club. 

Other business items were presented 

and it was decided to defer 

them until the board meeting. 


El’ Ameen Nabeel 

I apologize to one and all for missing last month’s magazine! 

I forgot to check to see if I was supposed to write another 

article, and I missed the deadline. Oh, well, mea culpa! I was 

hoping, too, that Leonard would be back up to speed and ready 

to take back his “golden pen”! 

Longevity is not the only thing required to join and participate 

in El’ Ameen Nabeel. “Dedicated” is also a descriptive word 

for the members. Sure, 20 years may seem a long time to newcomers, 

but in retrospect “time sure flies when you’re havin’ fun!” 

In years past, all Imperial Council Sessions were stag events and 

many young, fairly new members of the Shrine were reluctant to 

use their vacation time away from the family. In the late sixties 

and on through today, the venues and activities at the conventions 

were made more attractive and family friendly. Participation 

with the entire family became the norm and attaining those five 

parades required for membership was simple. Then a guy only 

had to wait for the next 15 years to catch up! Some continued to 

attend the conventions anyway, and the years just rolled by. It is 

common among the members of El’ Ameen to find fellows with 

20+ years and 20+ conventions! 

Participation was easy and dedication to a particular Unit 

became simple, too. Most members went on to leadership positions 

in their respective Units. Others’ interests “branched out” to 

other Units as well. And, of course, there are those members 

who are enthusiastic for a few years, then just sort of fade away,

the key to attracting their participation. Making that participation 

FUN and interesting is also important. What have you done for 

your Unit lately? Do you still work in the background at events? 

“You only get out what you put in” is a very true statement. El’ 

Ameen Nabeel is a way to honor that participation. Are you eligible 

for membership? Check with the secretary of your Unit and 

see if you qualify. Then contact Earl Moore at (317) 899-2751 or 

(317) 946-9786 for an application. The next meeting is April 16 

and we would all like to welcome you to membership, too! 

As for you new guys to the fraternity, why not set a goal to 

become eligible for membership? A good way to start is to plan 

now to attend the Imperial Session in St. Louis, MO, June 29 – 

July 3. It is close, easy to get to, and there are lots of family activities 

and attractions to visit while there. I am sure your Unit could 

use you in the parade; if not, or you are not yet in a Unit, contact 

Earl Moore and he can help you get involved with the flag 

corps or another Unit which might need some help. Pitching in 

at hospitality is always a good way to meet other MURAT Nobles 

and have fun at the same time, too. There is always room to ride 

in one of the antique cars of the Veteran Car Club, walk with the 

Patrol, bang the cymbals with the Band, help with the “sag 

wagon,” help balance the roller blade skaters of the NexGen, or 

whatever. I’m sure you get the idea. “Meet me in St. Louis!”

Now, thanks to HCSC, everyone can 

also be a pirate this month! Just cut out 

and wear the special “Kiss Me I’m Pirish”

voila, you’re a kiss plunderin’ Irish pirate 

who DARES others to pinch you. Enjoy! 

If you have a piratical spirit and 

would like to live the life of a pirate for 

more than just this month, HCSC meets 

at 7 p.m. every month on the third 

Thursday. March 20 is the meeting date 

this month. The meeting will take place 

at Plainfield Lodge #653 at the corner of 

US 40 and Center Street. 

HCSC always welcomes new 

members, is a people-oriented Shrine 

Club, and continues to be one of the 

best little Shrine Clubs in Shrinedom. 

Shriners reluctant to commit to a parade 

Unit or Club because of all of the practice 

time usually required will love 

HCSC. If HCSC had a motto it would be, 

“Practice? Pirates don’t need no stinkin’ 

practice!”

Ringmaster’s Banquet 

Nobles and Ladies, 

Thank you very much for volunteering 

your time at the 2008 Murat Shrine Circus. Your 

help and support have made this a successful 

circus. 

The Ringmaster’s Banquet and awards 

presentation will be held in the Arabian Room 

of the Murat Shrine on Saturday, April 5, 2008. 

There will be a cash bar beginning at 6 p.m. followed 

by an Italian buffet dinner at 7 p.m. 

Those who have worked three or more 

shows may attend free. For anyone who did 

not work at least three shows, the cost is $20 

per person, payable in advance at the Shrine

New Steering Committee for 

Donor Relations

IIn 2008, your Murat Donor Relations Committee for 

Shriners Hospitals for Children (“SHC”) is launching a 

comprehensive effort to reach as many potential donors 

in the next three years as possible. At present, that involves 

creating eight new committees to handle the eight branches 

of our efforts: Voluntary Annual Gifts, Major Individual 

Donors, Foundations, Corporations, Major Fund-Raising 

Events, Telemedicine Clinic, Speakers Bureau, and Donor 

Recognition Dinner. 

In order to better manage those eight committees, and 

any others that may be assigned to the Donor Relations 

Committee as a whole, we have decided to appoint a Steering 

Committee to function as a board of directors: setting policy, 

coordinating activities among the eight committees, working 

with the Divan, selecting personnel, interacting with SHC in 

Tampa, and so forth. The Nobles who have graciously consented 

to take their valuable time to serve on the Steering 

Committee are as follows: William S. Spyr, Philip C. Thrasher, 

Larry D. Jefferson, Alex L. Rogers, Gary W. Lewis, Michael R. 

St. Pierre, and George Proctor. The Steering Committee will 

meet on the second Tuesday of each month and anyone with 

any ideas about fundraising or wishing to be appointed to a 

committee as a volunteer, should feel free to contact the Murat 

Office at 635-2433 or any of these Nobles. 

We are still in the recruiting phase of setting up the 

Donor Relations committees. At present, we have chairmen 

for most of the committees, but we still need two chairmen: 

Voluntary Annual Gift and Major Fund-Raising Events. Both 

are big and important jobs and will require men who can 

devote many hours to the task. We estimate that we will need 

one man in each Club and Unit for Voluntary Annual Gift, and 

we are about one-half filled. The Major Fund-Raising Events 

Committee will expand and contract in size depending on 

which events are being activated; however, at the present time 

we have no chairman, so there are no events being planned 

or activated. Nonetheless, if you are interested in being 

involved in setting up and running golf tournaments, bowling 

tournaments, fishing tournaments, running or other sporting 

events, etc., for the purpose of raising money for SHC, please 

call me and I will place you on the Major Fund-Raising 

Committee for future work. If you would like more information 

about either of these committees and what it will take to 

be an effective chairman, please contact me at 686-4773 during 

normal business hours. 

Being in the recruiting phase, we are also looking for 

good volunteers to serve on the eight committees. We estimate 

that we will need one good man for each county, and 

about five in Marion County, to serve on the Speakers Bureau. 

We will need about four more experienced men to help on 

Major Gifts (from individuals) and four more experienced men 

to help on Foundations (grant writing and meetings). The 

Corporations Committee could use as many good men as volunteer, 

including Nobles outside Marion County, who are 

interested in meeting with corporations in their local areas, 

such as Wal-Mart, Target, Starbucks, etc. We are about full on 

the Donor Recognition Dinner Committee and could use 

another good man or two on the Telemedicine Clinic 

Committee. 

Nobles, we are embarking on this task for two reasons: 

(1) Raise much more new net money for SHC because the 

Endowment Fund cannot pay for the increases in our costs of 

providing vital medical services to our accepted patients; and 

(2) Raise awareness of SHC and Shrinedom within all of our 

communities. We are finding that more new members join 

because of SHC than because of the fraternal activities. We 

should use that information to our advantage by promoting 

SHC, and it will surely result in more new members. Thus, 

through your efforts, Murat will succeed along with SHC. 

This is a rare opportunity to be at the beginning of a 

great new adventure in Murat history. Together we can create 

traditions of service and awareness that will hopefully live 

well beyond our appointed times. Come join with us by calling

Club hosted a work day, and 

several members showed up 

at Brian Biehn’s house with 

their trailers and cars. When 

the day was done, six of the Car under repair.

make the long trip to Ft.

that the Mini-Mystics have traveled south to participate in

the parade. You might say we’re becoming “regulars” at the Araba Temple in Ft. 

Myers. We would like to thank them for the parking and hospitality. 

This parade is our start to defending the Most Active for 2007 in Parade 

Participation. The only bad thing about this parade … it’s an awful long drive back 

from sun and beaches to the cold of Indiana. Oh well! Got to get back and prepare 

for those April parades. 

Every year the president of the Club has the honor of presenting one of the 

members with the Mini-Mystic “Man of the Year.” The selection for 2007 was Dan 

Gillahan. Besides taking part in almost every parade in 2007, he hauled the wrecker 

along with his car to the parades. Dan was also right there whenever help was 

needed. On top of all this Shriner work, he was very busy with his lodge. Good 

job, Dan and congratulations from all your fellow drivers. 

To all our members, Sherri is taking reservations for Kerbela Fun Fest at 

Pigeon Forge as well as the Imperial in St. Louis. Don’t drag your feet … the rooms 

are going fast. Both of these events are relatively close by; let’s show everyone what 

good Shriners we are representing the Murat Temple and the Johnson County Shrine 

Club. 

As I write an article, things “pop” into my thought patterns and I have to let 

them out. Don’t ask me where they come from, they just do. For instance, how 

much deeper would the ocean be without sponges? Or, what’s the speed of dark? 

Another one that bugs me is what happens if you get scared half to death, twice? 

We still need help with BINGO Tuesday evenings as well as Saturday mornings. 

We need people to work BINGO. Come out and give President Ray Miller 

the help he needs. Any help is greatly appreciated. 

Well, I guess it’s time to wind this up. I’m off to have some fun and hopefully 

help some kids.

Greetings Nobles and Friends, 

Do you believe it? It is March 

already and it has been a busy two 

months. We have completed election 

and installation of officers, attended the 

Potentate’s Ball, and completed the 

staffing of the Murat Shrine Circus. 

What a year so far with many more 

activities on our agenda for 2008. 

The Directors Staff manned our 

circus booth with more than 25 people 

over the four-day event. We received 

outstanding cooperation from our 

Directors in staffing the booth with several 

(non-Shriner volunteers) assisting. 

Thank you all for your support in this 

very important event for the Murat 

Shrine. Looking forward to all your 

help next year as well. Please thank all 

outside volunteers for all the help they 

provided. 

We are currently finalizing the 

plans for the (SDA) Shrine Directors 

Association Convention in Milwaukee, 

WI, April 9-13. Every Director is 

encouraged to attend if possible. The 

Directors Staff will have great participation 

from our Illustrious Potentate and 

his Divan at this year’s (SDA) as we 

have in the past. We welcome all to 

attend this fine learning experience and 

the fun that comes with Shrinedom. If 

you need more information, please 

contact Ron William and Mike Adams 

as soon as possible since time is getting 

close. 

This summer’s Directors Staff picnic 

date has been selected and 

approved. Please update your roster 

books for Saturday, August 30. More 

information and directions will follow 

at a later date as we get closer to the 

picnic. We will have an honored guest 

attending this year’s event.

Brown County Shrine Club

Our gang meets on the second 

Tuesday of each month at the Brown 

County Inn in Nashville at 6 p.m., allowing 

members time to grab a bite or a 

brew and gather informally before moving 

to our meeting room at 7 p.m. Our 

February meeting was loaded with discussion 

following the attendance of the 

Potentate’s Leadership Conference in 

January at the Murat by our president, 

Harry Bond, and vice president, Gail 

Raehn. This is believed to be the second 

oldest Murat county club in Indiana, 

which is shrinking in size way too fast. 

Upon receiving word of the Club’s poor 

health, Harry Bond made it a goal to not 

only keep the Club alive, but to also 

grow it; so he contacted his friend for 

help, Gail Raehn, who agreed to the 

goals. Both are fairly new to Shrine 

leadership but intend to give it their all. 

With all the knowledge gained at the 

Leadership Conference, the agenda was 

set. At our February meeting, Harry discussed 

fundraising through the Paper 

Crusade and Plaque sales in addition to 

assigning responsibilities for our other 

fundraiser: our June 7 Car/Truck Show 

to be held on the streets of Nashville.

any Shrine Club or Unit that attends will 

probably be able to earn a trophy.

vehicles. Also in the February meeting, 

we asked for a volunteer which was 

gladly jumped at. This allowed our 

appointment of a membership leader, a 

new position in our Club. The role of 

this position is to keep us all focused on 

new members, to contact other Clubs 

and Units to see what their recruitment 

program is like, and help us on a path of 

historical growth. We also spoke about 

upcoming special Murat events like the 

Shrine Circus and asked anyone who 

wanted to volunteer to help to contact 

the office. In addition, there was talk of 

the Fun Fest in Pigeon Forge and the 

Potentate’s “Meet Us in St. Louis” 

Program at the Imperial Council Session. 

There were also other important items 

discussed and the meeting only lasted 

until 3 a.m. (just kidding but if you 

would have seen the agenda …).

wife Vicki is the new ladies’ club president, and Pam Mock (Jeff’s wife) is the vice 

president. 

The new president of our Desert Patrol is Noble Jim Vest, P.P. Let’s get those 

three wheelers back out, shined up, fired up, and ready to go parading. 

May a green shamrock of luck come your way this month. Chicken first and 

third Fridays and fish second and fourth Fridays each month. January 25 was fish 

night – we set a record of 300 people served. The Club is open daily for lunch

The winds of March are starting to blow … 

with these winds, we’ll see lots of changes. Soon 

temperatures will leave the freezing mark and start 

climbing up the thermometer. Snow will be 

replaced by green grass. Barren trees will spring 

to life with new leaves, and spring flowers will be 

blooming in those flower beds. Goodbye old 

man winter and “hello” to spring. 

Johnson County Shrine Club is also undergoing 

some changes at this time. Recently, the 

board of directors and the new officers of the Club 

selected a contractor to remodel both the men’s 

and ladies’ restrooms. We’re talking total remodeling. 

The ladies’ lounge will soon be moved into 

the area that was the men’s room. It will be larger 

than their old one with all new fixtures, vanities, 

mirrors, etc. The men’s room will also be 

totally reworked. Everyone is quite excited about 

this improvement. 

Going along with the changes, our new president, Ray Miller, and his lady, 

Jessica, recently spent a Sunday at the Club reworking the Photo Board. What originally 

was a random grouping of photographs taken over the past three or four 

years has been replaced with a nice three-part display. The new display will allow 

updating by reworking any one of the sections. Great improvement! Good job, 

guys. 

Since we’re talking about changes, how many of you have noticed changes 

in your body as you’ve aged passed 40? If you have, then you might want to consider 

this … the Roman numerals for “40” are XL … enough said! 

Plans are already being made for several Club events for the upcoming summer. 

The Johnson County Fair will be in early July and once again the Ralph 

Simpson Building will become a busy place. The Club plans to prepare and serve 

three meals a day for the entire fair. Since the Club sits next door to the fairgrounds, 

you can save yourself quite a walk by parking at the Club. We will have parking 

available for the entire fair. 

The annual Johnson County Shrine Club golf outing has just been announced 

by Bill Sparks, our chairman. September 11 at 12 p.m., the golfers will tee off at 

Hickory Stick Golf Course. For only $65, a golfer gets his cart, golf, driving range, 

Zem-Zem at the course followed by a prime rib dinner and door prizes at the Club 

afterwards. It’s a great day with tons of fellowship. Come out and join us! 

We want to extend best wishes for a quick recovery to Estelle Harrison. 

Estelle recently suffered a heart attack and is currently recovering at home. Hurry 

up and get well, Estelle; the county fair is coming and we’ll need you on the cash 

register. All joking aside, we all extend a hearty “get well.” 

It’s time to wind this to a close, but before I go, I recently heard a comedian 

say that “inside every older person is a younger person wondering, ‘What the heck 

happened?’ ”

Hello Nobles, 

While you are reading this, we are 

clowning around at the circus right now 

along with the 160 fourth graders from 

Montgomery County. We are having a 

great time. I am sure we are hanging out 

with a few of you guys too. 

We are proud of our Montgomery 

County Shrine Club treasurer, Greg Miller, 

who was installed as the 2008 president of 

the Murat Reception Unit on December 

11. We are very fortunate to have members 

of the MCSC to be active in the Murat. 

We have our Club meetings the last 

Tuesday of each month and all Nobles are 

welcome. Jane Chezem, with the assistance 

of Judy Conseor, the better halves of 

President Bob Chezem and Edd Consoer, 

prepared our dinner for us. Thank you, 

ladies. 

We have a change of date for our 

golf outing at Rocky Ridge in Darlington. 

It will be July 26 now. We will still furnish 

the same great fun, just a different day. 

Coming up soon will be our onion sales. 

Speaking of onions, we just want to let 

everyone know that Stan “The Onion 

Railroad Club 

Man” Harris is out of the hospital and getting 

around fine. Stan, we will be calling 

for your services soon. We will have our 

third countdown April 12 at the Eagles in

WOW! February has been a busy 

month for our Mobil Nobles. 

The Little Pig Initiation was held on 

Friday, February 15. Bill Rasner was initiated 

as the Outer Guard of our Divan. 

Even though he has witnessed previous 

Outer Guard initiations, he will always 

treasure his own experience. This event 

has grown to be one of the “must attend” 

events for our Shrine Center. Potentate 

Ron Elliot made an excellent choice to 

start up the chain to be a future Potentate. 

We capped off February by providing 

food service for the 2008 Murat Shrine 

Circus. We appreciated all the people 

who prepared the food and staffed the 

serving area. It takes about 200 Shriners 

and friends to make the circus a successful 

event for our Shrine Center. It helps to 

keep our Center’s doors open and supports 

our activities. We appreciate and 

thank our circus director, Ted Crosley, for 

his coordination and hard work to make 

this 2008 circus come off smoothly. 

Join us at our monthly meetings in 

the Oasis. Our meetings are on the second 

Friday evening. We start dinner at 

about 6 p.m., which includes our ladies 

and families. We always welcome visitors.

President Bob Crawford showed an interesting video on “Tourist Steam Trains 

in the United States” at our February 26 meeting. Great scenery, great action, and no

President-elect and Chief Engineer David Kaufman reminds all Murat Railroad 

Club members that our regular March 25 meeting will be our Installation and Ladies 

Party. The party will be in the Tunisian Room of the Murat Shrine Club. Murat Railroad 

Club paid members will receive a notice by mail about details and special pricing for

entertainment, so send your check and put March 25, 2008, on your calendar right

Plans are in motion for our picnic at the Foxes Den, Johnson County Park 

System, Saturday, August 16. This is a great picnic for all the family, so put this date 

on your calendar right now. Yes, the corn is on order. 

The Railroad Club is looking for some members who are interested in model 

railroading, Big Boy railroads, trips to railroad related facilities, etc. If this interests you, 

come up to one of our meetings. Look in the Oasis Lounge for a Noble with railroad 

type clothing, and he will either direct you or show you the way to the Railroad Club 

rooms. We are unique. Come join us in fun and fellowship 

Shrine taillight stickers are still available from the Fraternal Office as well as from 

Murat Railroad Club officers. Let’s light up your car taillights with the Shrine emblem.

We will hold our first meeting on February 13, 2008, at Kingan Gun Club 

located at 5112 W 500 N (Hancock Co.), (317) 335-3781. 

From I-70 Mt. Comfort exit. North on McCordsville Road to 500 N. Flasher 

light turn east 3/4 mile. Green block building. 

We hold a short business meeting at 7 p.m. and then start the evening fun. 

We shoot 25 16-yard targets. The score from 16 Yd. shoot, determine the yardage 

you shoot the handicap from. 20 Yd. to 25 Yd. is the positions used for the handicap 

shoot. We have a Lewis class purse. Payout is high over all (combine both 

scores). Second place midline total score. Ties split. 

Come out with your shotgun and have fun. 12 Ga. ammo available. 

Kingan Gun Club is holding a loot shoot at the same time. It follows the same 

scoring system. 


Sports 

The early demise of the Colts left 

some unfilled dates in the RCA Dome 

schedule so the teardown will be postponed 

a few weeks. Although the 

building holds many memories of good 

times and special events, there is no use 

of the dome for a memory of exciting 

events provided by the weekly appearance 

of the Colts games. Therefore, several 

unfilled reservations still on the 

books will be honored. 

The winter sports season is over – 

no more football, baseball season is 

over, but our Indianapolis Indians have 

announced they will still be part of the 

Pirates farm team. They will maintain 

the same coach and managers of their 

team and will be training young players 

to advance to the Major Leagues. The 

good news is that there is no increase in 

reservation or seat prices. Also, they 

have increased the size of personnel to 

handle their concession facilities and 

will keep prices down and offer better 

service. 

Bowling was one of the sports not 

ending; in fact, on week two of the season 

a mammoth celebration was put on 

for Wes Kidwell as he celebrated his 

88th birthday with the entire league 

membership and a couple of birthday

The Honored Ladies of Murat 

Shrine are the widows of Nobles. We 

meet the fourth Thursday of each month 

in the Corinthian Room of the Murat 

Shrine Center with the exception of July 

and August. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m. 

followed by a very short meeting and a 

program. Lunch is $9 and reservations 

must be made by calling Audrey Apple at 

(317) 786-3016. 

At our last meeting, we had a scavenger 

hunt organized by Audrey Apple 

which was much fun. The guest speaker 

at our February meeting will be 

George E. Proctor, Chief Rabban of Murat 

Shrine, who will speak about the Indiana 

Masonic Home and answer any questions 

we might have. Ladies, if you are a 

widow of a Shriner, you are eligible to 

belong to this organization.

Kidwell was able to roll a little over his 

poor average, but Mike Pearcy flew in 

with a 747 pin fall and increased his 

average to 206.66, which was the high 

total for the night and increased the talented 

lefthander to a commanding lead 

in the second week of league play. The 

teams now look forward to the rolling 

for the Potentate’s Trophy with Shrine 

bowlers from other leagues, which 

should be held the first of April. 

Stone Belt Shrine Club

more pictures were taken and the birthday 

cake was enjoyed by all.

lost for the night, they still have a commanding

Scimitars, a team of 180 averages 

bowlers: Chuck Sampson (188), Ed 

Barnard (185), Harold Pierce (181), Ray 

Muir (184), and John Ervin, Sr. (182).

Through the generosity of Noble Lou Tomkins, the Stone Belt Shrine Club has 

received two 30 caliber rifles (a M1903 Springfield and a M1917 Enfield). Each rifle 

is reconditioned and equipped with a match grade barrel. Their condition is 

immaculate. The recommended selling prices are $1,425 each. We will be selling 

chances on these items for $10 a chance, with the winner taking his choice of one 

of these beautiful weapons. The remaining unit will be sold similarly at a future 

date. These weapons can be seen at the Club and tickets are available from board 

members or at the bar each Monday, Wednesday and Friday during our regular 

events. For additional information, you can call the Club at (812) 876-2862. 

Things are really getting busy at the Stone Belt Shrine Club. Friday night dinners 

continue to be a big attraction. P.P. Roger McNeal and his kitchen helpers 

seem to out-do themselves with each succeeding Friday. The Friday night menu 

specials range from all-you-can-eat fish fries to fantastic baby back ribs – everyone 

dining with us goes away completely satisfied. Add to this our just instituted $50 

door prize for one lucky diner each Friday and it becomes something you will want 

to experience for yourself. 

As I write this, we are gearing up for our annual Sweetheart Dance, which 

promises to be a great evening of dining, dancing, and revelry. The Potentate’s Ball 

was also high on everyone’s agenda as we celebrated with our Illustrious Potentate 

Ron Elliott and his Lady Sally Jo as he assumed his duties in this position. 

As our new president, Noble Bill McKee settles into his office and promises 

to make a number of new, innovative changes for the betterment of our Club. Our 

Friday night door prize is just one of them. March 7 will see the installation of the 

president, officers, and board of directors at a formal dinner dance at the Club. 

Dress for the evening includes fez. We especially look forward to hosting our 

Illustrious Potentate Ron Elliott, his lady, and members of the Divan with their 

ladies. 

In preparation for the upcoming year, Mini-Cycle Unit President (P.P.) Tom 

Staley has scheduled its first meeting for April 1 (April Fools’ Day) at the Club. Our 

Hillbilly Clan 14, Outhouse 16 promises a very active and fun-filled year. PA- 

Rabban Mike Bastin is looking for, as he says, “some more good ideas” from his 

Hillbilly cuz’ins. If you are looking for a really fun bunch to join, they meet the 

fourth Tuesday of each month at the Club. Incidentally, the ladies prepare a great 

meal for their meetings. 

Remember our true purpose in belonging to the Stone Belt Shrine Club is to 

help a child live a better life and we also have one heck of a lot of fun in doing it.

I have had numerous questions 

about the reasoning behind the new 

Shriners Hospitals logo and the “branding” 

effort underway at the present time. 

There are a number of reasons for 

making the changes that are reflected in 

the new branding and marketing initiative for Shriners 

Hospitals. 

The environment in which Shriners Hospitals operate 

today is not the same environment it was 20 or even 10 years 

ago. It is a much more competitive environment than at any 

time in the history of medicine, with many pediatric hospitals 

now treating conditions we have specialized in for decades. 

Internal and external forces related to changes in the healthcare 

industry, patient demographics, and pressure on our economic 

model necessitate a pro-active strategic approach to 

marketing our hospitals to external audiences. 

This means a number of things. First, our hospitals must 

have a consistent look and messaging that communicates who 

Shriners Hospitals are AND one that speaks to potential 

patients, donors and the other audiences. One element of this 

new effort involves the visual look. When 

the new visual design was created, great 

attention was given to the tradition, history 

and role of the fraternity in making our 

hospital system what it is today. 

The Joint Boards support this program 

because it more effectively communicates 

to the various audiences we seek 

to reach, while still showing the importance 

of the fraternity; in fact, it elevates 

the role of the fraternity by showing the 

connection, we believe, even more prominently. 

If you compare the two logos 

(Editorial Without Words and the new 

graphic depiction of the Shriner and 

child), you will see that the fez is far more 

easily recognized in the new logo than in 

the Editorial Without Words, especially if reduced in size. Of 

course, the Shrine fez is the symbol Shriners have become 

associated with worldwide. 

As a bit of background, it may be helpful to know that 

the new campaign was over two years in the making and after 

being authorized by the Planning Committee, Joint Boards, 

and the Colorado representatives, the project began with 

research involving our key publics: Shriners, patient families, 

donors, and referring physicians. Their input is what drove the 

new visual design, communications and branding strategy, 

and advertising components for the new national campaign 

that will turn up the volume on the visibility of both Shriners 

Hospitals and the Shrine fraternity as never before. Remember, 

we have never undertaken a paid advertising campaign of this 

magnitude and it will include paid commercial spots on television, 

radio and print ads in magazines such as People, and 

other widely read publications. 

Please know the Editorial Without Words is not going 

away. In fact, it is being elevated to a position of honor and 

will continue to be used, oftentimes right alongside the new 

logo. It is also represented both in the logo (in a modernized 

version of this image) and the graphic element of the statue. 

By simplifying the logo, we have made it easier to reproduce, 

more legible in small applications, more contemporary and 

memorable, and easier for external audiences (upon whose 

support we so desperately depend) to relate to. It also shows 

the fez more prominently and the heartlike 

shape shows the warm relationship 

between the Shriner and the child, representing 

Shriners as the heart of Shriners 

Hospitals, which, of course, we are. 

We need to help our kids, the hospital 

system and the fraternity by creating 

more awareness, seeking out more 

patients to help and much needed donations 

for our hospitals. 

The Joint Boards have endorsed this 

program and our public relations department 

at International Headquarters will be 

working over the next few months to communicate 

this with the Nobility and hospital 

staffs through publications and presentations 

at various meetings and seminars.

Masons of the State of Indiana, Duane L. Vaught 

Saturday, March 8, 2008 

Following the conclusion of the Master Mason 

degree, the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of 

Indianapolis, will be opening and conferring the 

fourth and fourteenth degrees. After the AASR concludes, 

the Illustrious Potentate will open Murat 

Temple for a ceremonial. 

Note: All candidates for the degrees of Symbolic 

Masonry will need to have a mentor present who can 

vouch for their eligibility. The mentor will need to 

bring the apron, Bible and Monitor for each of his 

candidates. As a reminder, candidates for this class 

must have been elected prior to March 8, 2008.

… The Third Annual MSBC Texas Hold 

’em Tournament. It leads the way to 

broadening our network/fundraising 

opportunities. Please contact any member 

of our officer line for details (or to 

volunteer your expertise). It will take 

place March 29 in the Oasis Lounge 

(please view our advert elsewhere in 

this issue). 

Our Unit’s accomplishments, however, 

do not stem simply from this 

fundraising. That would not do us justice. 

Our fund-raising achievements 

remain the by-product of our business 

opportunities. Every Stated Meeting, 

every social event, every fundraiser – 

every visit to the Oasis Lounge – 

becomes a networking opportunity to 

conduct business. Each member of our 

Unit genuinely wants all of us to grow 

and prosper. 

We can measure this prosperity 

several ways: a direct referral, closed 

business deal, a sale, a completed negotiation 

– but such criterion does not 

reflect the true depth of the opportunity 

afforded our members. 

The wealth of talent, the breadth 

of professionals, and the wide range of 

expertise in our Unit provides an 

unequal opportunity for each of us, 

meeting on the level, to help a brother 

in need (or maybe seeking advice). The 

amount of money saved, the expert 

advice available, one simply cannot 

quantify that with a naked dollar sign. 

Nevertheless, we would not overstate 

to claim that hundreds of thousands 

– if not millions – of dollars pass 

hands throughout the year, either directly 

or indirectly, from business negotiated 

through our Unit.

the fourth Tuesday of every month

at 6 p.m., our Stated Meeting at 7 p.m. 

We keep Unit business to a minimum

Goodbye cold February and hello early spring. The sparrows and their many 

feathered friends are anticipating the fresh scent of spring. Get your lawnmower 

out of the shed and prepare for the mowing season. Garden tools will turn over 

the rich soil and ready it for planting flowers and items in your vegetable garden. 

Yes, springtime is “just around the corner.” 

ATTENTION: Our Stated Meetings have been changed effective immediately. 

Koran Temple No. 30 will hold their Stated Meetings on the third Wednesday 

of every month, except June, July and August. They will be held at 7 p.m. in the 

Corinthian Room of the Murat Shrine Centre. Please mark your calendars to reflect 

these permanent changes for the following Stated Meeting dates: March 5, April 2, 

and May 7. 

Thank You! Queen Cathy Rose would like to thank everyone who had any 

part in making her year as Koran Temple’s Queen a huge success. “It has been a 

rewarding year, one I shall never forget. I have formed many friendships while traveling 

these United States. It was an honor representing Koran Temple at Supreme 

Session, several subordinate temples and six Shrine Hospitals.” Queen Cathy 

would also like to thank her mother, Past Queen Carol Rose, for serving as Supreme 

Princess Zuliema for the Supreme Temple, Daughters of the Nile; being a great traveling 

companion; helping with last minute details for meetings, banquets, and ceremonials; 

and offering her “ear” and shoulder for extra support during trying 

moments. “I love you, Mom.” 

Congratulations to everyone who helped make our annual Style Show a huge 

success. Special thanks from Queen Cathy Rose to community sponsors for their 

generous contribution to our silent auction. Their gifts were well received by all 

attending this event. Finally, Pam Herther was the winner of our one-carat diamond 

tennis bracelet. 

The final sewing session will be hosted by Queen Cathy at the Murat Shrine 

Centre from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. The ladies will have a noon soup and salad luncheon 

in the Oasis Lounge followed by their business meeting. Add these future 

sewing dates to your 2008 calendar – March 19, April 16, and May 21. More information 

will be forthcoming in our April Shrine newsletter. Everyone come and 

help to complete the items for the children in the hospitals. Get your parking permit 

decal from Queen Cathy at our March Stated Meeting. 

Our temple needs new ladies for membership. Past Queen Manuella 

Jefferson, (317) 844-6222, and Faye Crabtree, (317) 894-6583, will provide a Petition 

for Membership to anyone interested in belonging to our organization. Give one 

of these ladies a call today! 

Koran Temple’s open installation of officers for the 2008-2009 year will be on 

Sunday, March 30, at 3 p.m. in the Trowel Trades Building. Everyone is cordially 

invited to attend and welcome these newly elected officers to their year of service. 

A reception will follow immediately. 

My final thought: A man’s hair and teeth are just about his best friends, but 

even the best of all friends “fall out.”

February is here and at Tarum things are heating up. January got off to a great 

start at the Club. The Friday night dinner attendance was up and the meals were 

great. We have had several potential members visiting us from the Connersville 

area. We are glad to see them and should they choose to make Tarum their new 

home, they will be welcomed into the fold. 

January was also a month that was hard on two of our members in particular. 

Past President Jack Dickey suffered a massive heart attack and thankfully he survived. 

He is at home and recovering nicely. He also has a novel way to raise money 

for the hospitals. To find out what this is, you will have to ask Jack. Unfortunately, 

Tarum lost a longtime Noble and friend, Paul Dunlap, who passed away at his 

home on the 29th of the month. Our condolences go out to his family. Paul, you 

will be missed. Paul was Shriner of the Year in 2006. 

Tarum held their annual installation of officers on Saturday, January 26. 

Illustrious Sir, Potentate Ron Elliott, who was our installing officer, and members of 

his Divan were our guests. The award winners for 2007 are as follows: Lady Shriner 

of the Year went to Connie Yeager, Can Man of the Year was Everett Claypoole, the 

President’s Award went to Dick Benner, and Shriner of the Year was presented to 

Jeff Dickey. Tarum congratulates these outstanding winners on their awards. Well 

done to one and all. 

It was good to see our newest members in attendance that night: Mike 

(Radar) Whalen, Robert Whalen and Gene Phenis. They all had a good time and 

got to know the members that night. Noble Kyle Tom was the master of ceremonies, 

Rose Anderson made sure the dinner went smoothly, and students from 

Northeastern High School did a great job of serving the dinners and clearing the 

tables. Tracy Jellison performed the national anthem superbly. Tracy will also be 

singing the national anthem at the circus, and Tarum’s Can and Children’s 

Committee will be taking two classrooms of children to the circus. 

Remember to attend Richmond’s Masonic Family’s first Saturday of the month 

breakfast at the lodge. The food and fellowship is fantastic. So mark your calendars 

and plan on attending at least one of Richmond’s Masonic Bodies each month. 

February will bring us a new Sweetheart King and Ted (it’s good to be King) May 

will be handing over his scepter. The new king will be announced next month. By 

the way, Bonnie, it is on the left hand.

ceremony and are now ready for a 

busy, happy term of office. The annual 

Souper Supper was scheduled for 

Friday, February 1, but for a while it 

looked as though it may be cancelled 

due to the weather but was not. Many 

strong-hearted souls appeared at the 

Gatling Gun Club for the delicious 

soup, good music and friendship. 

Lady Sandra Scott, chairman of 

the Sewing Committee, reported that 

the April sewing will be held at 10 a.m. 

until 2 p.m. instead of an evening meeting. 

The meeting will be held at the 

AMVETS in Eagledale on April 8. Items 

being made are bags for the children to 

put on their wheel chairs and walkers 

to carry their belongings with them.
