POTENTATE MESSAGE
From the Potentate
January came in with a
vengeance and left on the same
note with a nasty storm to start
February.
I lost an uncle, Richard
Moran, a 50-year Mason, and the
city of Indianapolis lost IMPD Officer,
David Moore.
I would like to thank
Worshipful Master J. Keith Henry for
getting the large turnout to give
Masonic Rites for my uncle. Many
individuals took off work in the middle
of the afternoon; thank you my
brothers. Walter, I want to thank you for
doing the rites. It was well done.
On a separate note, I would like to
honor the Highlanders. Four of the
Highlanders braved the elements and took
part in the funeral ceremonies for Officer
Moore. Your actions are not only honorable,
but commendable.
With the actions of Lodge 123 and the
Highlanders, it certainly proves that “We are
Family.”
I would like to thank our Chief Rabban,
Charlie Crabtree, for stepping up to the plate
and chairing the circus at the last minute.
Charlie, assisted by Randy Kron and 31 other
committee chairs, did a great job. I want to
thank everyone who worked to assist in the
setup, teardown, and worked to sell novelties
or in any other capacity. I would
also like to thank Noble Jim
Hamid for bringing us many
great acts. Thanks, nobles and
ladies all.
Membership is a large
commitment to me. Carl
Culmann is chairing that committee
and has great ideas. There are currently
6,500 Shriners at Murat. If
you all bring one new member, it
would be great. I ask the active
ones to “Bring Kevin 11.” If you
bring 11 or more, we will bring the
ceremony to your Club.
This month I would like to honor our
third president, Thomas Jefferson. It is undisputable
that he was an active Mason and a distinguished
leader.
Mark your calendars for April 9. We will
have a presentation for the Potentate’s trip to
Las Vegas at 4 p.m. at the temple. Hors d’oeuvres
will be provided and then you can stay
for Texas Hold’em and practice for the trip!
Please join us.
Remember ... “We Are Family.”
Yours in the Faith,
Kevin D. Rhodes
HOSPITAL NEWS
“Shriners are Wonderful,
Awesome People”
GORDON J HUSK, CHAIRMAN, BOARD OF GOVERNORS, SHRINERS HOSPITAL ® –CHICAGO
William Edward Lee Whyde, Jr.
was born January 10, 1993. His
little sister Paige was born
January 13, 1995. The boy was commonly
called Bubby. “Bubby” was very extroverted,
while Paige was a shy, quiet little girl.
They were happy children. On December
24, 1996, their happy world was turned
upside down.
Bubby was within a few days of his
fourth birthday, and Paige was soon to
have her second birthday. Their parents
shared custody, and the children were at
their father’s home in Terre Haute, IN,
when a fire started. The house became a
blazing inferno. The children were rescued
and taken to an Indianapolis hospital.
Mary, the mother of the two children,
was at work in Indianapolis and was asked
to come to the front office. She was told
about the fire, and she went to the hospital.
Weather conditions were bad, and the
trip to the hospital seemed to take forever.
When she arrived, doctors were trying to
stabilize the condition of the two children.
Mary was taken to a small room and told
someone would be out to speak with her.
A nurse came into the room and told Mary
she could see the children for only a few
minutes because doctors were still working
on them.
After the children had been cared for
initially, they were transferred to another
hospital’s intensive care unit. Mary and
other family members awaited news about
Bubby and Paige. Mary heard an urgent
code call, and seemed to know it involved
Bubby. She ran into the room and saw a
doctor frantically performing CPR on
Bubby. When resuscitation attempts
ended, Mary held Bubby in her arms as he
took his final breath. She then asked a
nurse where she could find Paige. The
nurse told her Paige was in the next room.
Mary says, “Paige was wrapped up like a
mummy. I could only see her eyes. She
was in a medically induced coma, but she
somehow was able to raise her arms. I told
the doctors Paige couldn’t breathe and had
been born with chronic asthma. They
checked her lungs and found they were
being filled with fluid.”
Paige was in a burns unit two months.
She had six major surgical procedures within
the first week. Mary was vigilant, staying
by Paige’s side for those two months.
THE MURAT MAGAZINE

Paige says, “Everything is wonderful.
Every day, Mom says ‘I love you.’ She
also says, ‘You are so smart, beautiful
and strong.’ I am now 16 years old,
doing very well in school, and I plan to
go to college. I want to become a singer.”
Nurses had to insist that Mary take an occasional break to shower,
eat and take short naps.
Mary drove to Terre Haute to take necessary action to
have Bubby properly buried. That action took five days, and
Mary returned to Paige’s side immediately thereafter, insisting
that visitors take all required actions to avoid causing infection
for Paige.
When doctors brought Paige out of her coma, she
opened her eyes and saw her mother. She asked, “Where’s my
Bubby?” Mary had been told by the doctors she should not
tell Paige about Bubby, because it could cause a relapse.
Mary said, “He is okay. He loves you.” One week after Paige
awoke, she was transported to a facility for extensive rehabilitation.
Mary accompanied Paige on the trip to the facility and
stayed with her during the first week. Having been unconscious,
Paige did not know her exact age, so Mary had a birthday
party for her to celebrate her second birthday.
Mary kept everything on a positive note for Paige,
because she knew there would be a rough road ahead for
Paige. As Mary thought about Paige’s future, she recalled the
parents of another patient at one of the hospitals had said they
had wanted to have their child taken to Shriners Hospital ® in
Cincinnati, but their child passed away before the transfer
could be made. Mary contacted that hospital, and Paige was
soon accepted as a patient.
Mary asked her mother to help care for Paige due to the
domestic unrest of joint custody. Mary and her mother went
with Paige to her first appointment in Cincinnati, when Paige
was 4 years old. Paige has had about 15 major surgical procedures
in Cincinnati. Doctors say she will need continued
surgery as she grows.
Paige says, “Everything is wonderful. Every day, Mom
says ‘I love you.’ She also says, ‘You are so smart, beautiful
and strong.’ I am now 16 years old, doing very well in school,
and I plan to go to college. I want to become a singer.”
Mary adds, “I am very thankful for Shriners.
They showed me it is okay to rely upon someone else. Any
question I asked was answered. They are wonderful, awesome
people. I can’t thank Shriners enough for what they
have done for my daughter. Paige has an appointment this
month to discuss the next surgery. I thank all Shriners for making
this wonderful hospital available to people in need. I hope
the hospital is there forever.”
Shriners Hospitals for Children ® is a pediatric health care system of 22 hospitals
THE MURAT MAGAZINE

Yacht Club
We have been planning a host of
new social programs for the Yacht Club
this year. While the plans are not complete
at this time, we are planning to
have a regatta on Lake Lemon and a
group cruise on Lake Monroe in addition
to all of the other functions which
we normally have. In addition, on
selected dates when there is a Band
Night, we would like all members of the
Yacht Club to heed the "muster call" and
show up for the party. This will be
more or less having a table with your
fellow Yacht Club members at the Oasis
Lounge while we mix and mingle with
the other members of Murat temple and
listen to some great music and party on!
We did this on January 7 and it was a
great success! Check your e-mail and
look for our functions. Because our
Club is so large, we cannot send out flyers
for all of our functions, but check
your e-mail. If you have a new e-mail
address, contact our hard-working secretary-treasurer,
Ted Stewart, P.C., at
Stew0627@aol.com. Our Yacht Club has
more than 300 members and there is a
reason that we are the largest club in
Shrinedom—there are many benefits to
membership. First of all, your membership
in Murat Yacht Club will give you
Veteran Car Club
MARCH 2011
Delbert Drummond
reciprocal privileges in more than 2,000
yacht clubs in North America and the
Caribbean. Your official paid-up membership
card is all you will need. In
addition, you will be immediately invited
to party after party with your fellow
Yacht Club members. It is a great club
and all Shriners are welcome. Our dues:
$15!
Gentlemen, we want all members
to have the official Yacht Club Uniform
Shirt. This shirt is beautiful, is only $33,
and can be ordered from our official
Yacht Club gear provider—Joyce
Puterbaugh. PLEASE, please contact
Joyce at jspembroidery!sbcglobal.net
a.s.a.p. or call her at (317) 297-5505 and
order your shirt. She has an assortment
of beautiful Murat Club jackets, sweatshirts,
T-shirts, and hats. (But it is the
uniform shirt that we want every member
to have!) Her prices are very reasonable
and we want to promote our
great Club throughout Murat and all of
Shrinedom. It is important that we all
have this uniform shirt! So at our next
party, be cool … have an official Murat
Yacht Club Uniform Shirt! This will be
your only expense for all of the years
that you will be a Yacht Club member.
Chris Fields
Greetings from the Murat Veteran Car Club. We are a unit that consists of
antique and special interest vehicles. We meet the second Monday of the month at
7 p.m. in the basement of the Murat temple. Following each meeting, we have
refreshments, which are provided by a different member and their lady. The wives
or lady friends are always welcome to attend the meetings, our weekend outings,
and our two- to three-day car tours. These car tours are usually planned for the
spring and the fall. We also try to attend numerous parades during the scheduled
season. Families with children are always welcome. Come join us for the fun and
the interesting places we visit. Spring is upon us; with that, many of us will be getting
our vehicles out of winter storage. The old vehicles will come back to life with
special attention to a good cleaning and some routine service, which will hopefully
prepare them for the fun season ahead. You do not have to own an antique or
special interest vehicle to be a member, so come to a meeting and let’s get
acquainted; we would love to meet you.
Finally, the Murat Veteran Car Club would like to recognize and congratulate
its new officers for 2011: President Darrel Wilkinson, Vice President Chris Fields,
Secretary Chris Bottorf, and Treasurer Fred Johnson. Remember it is always about
having fun while helping children.
Montgomery
County
Bob Vanderkolk
The 2011 Montgomery County
Shrine Club year is officially underway.
With the loud dropping of the gavel by
incoming President Dale Herman, it’s
officially on with the Pledge of
Allegiance by President Dale and the
prayer given by Irving Bressle.
Then Dale asked for a roll call of
past presidents which included Charlie
Homsher '84, Charlie Burkhart '82,
Wayne Smith '79, Steve Middleton '96,
Mike Utterback '07, Marvin Ramsay '92,
Kevin Rhodes '01, Mike Cloncs '05, and
Bob Chezem '08. Then came the
vegetable soup and out-of-this-world
large homemade cinnamon rolls.
The Shrine Circus is the first big
project coming up. Mike Cloncs has
again taken charge for us, assisted by
the other half of the M & M guys, Mike
Utterback. Sounds like they have it
pretty well organized. It's a-comin'
Saturday, March 5. It was noted that
Noble Elton Ross has been contributing
for tickets for more than 30 years, having
started with Willy Sheets.
President Dale reminded the
membership of coming events including
the Murat Potentate’s Ball Saturday,
March 19, and the Mobil Nobles Little
Pig Initiation, NexGen Mardi Gras Party
and Band Night Friday, February 18.
The membership was made
aware of the losses of two of our good
nobles, Myron Pattison and Dave Starr.
Contributions to the Transportation
Fund will be made in their honor.
Illustrious Potentate Kevin
Rhodes informed us of several items
being discussed with the Divan which
were appreciated.
Your reporter and lady were finishing
lunch at the Linden Cafe recently
when a couple came in the front
door and everything got quiet. Then all
smiled and shouted, “Good to see you
Tim!” His Lady (Sue) apparently
thought Tim was up to it and he sure
was ... real good to see you, Tim.
There being no further business
to discuss, the meeting was adjourned.
Johnson County Mini-Mystics
Dave Alspaugh
It’s March 2011 and what do we
expect? Well, there’s always lots of wind
throughout the month … then there’s the
Ides of March. That had something to do
with the Romans years ago; we won’t
worry about that. Then there’s St.
Patrick’s Day. Let’s hope the little leprechaun
drops a little good luck our way.
Before I get too windy, let me say
“Thank You” to all the Mini-Mystics for
the plaque and naming me Man of the
Year for 2010. I really appreciated being
acknowledged. Thanks again.
By now, it is nearing parade time.
We have already been contacted by several
groups to take part in their parades.
Don Borski has been given the information
and has submitted the necessary
paperwork for participation. Hopefully, all
the drivers have made the repairs needed
to make their little parade cars ready.
Dave Alspaugh – Man of the Year
Speaking about parading, let me
introduce another Mini-Mystics member
of our parade team—Ray Miller. Ray’s
profession of choice is an electrician.
He and his lovely lady Jessica live on the
south side of the city. Ray became a
Mason in 2000 when he was raised at
Lodge #270 in Southport. Once he got
started, he couldn’t stop. He joined the
Scottish Rite in 2000, followed by joining
the Murat Shrine the same year.
Since joining, Ray has been very
active. Some of his many accomplishments
include: vice president of Mini-
Mystics (2007), president of the Patrol
(2008), and president of the Johnson
County Shrine Club (2008).
Ray Miller
And he was parading all over the
place at the same time. Being from
Dramatic Cast
Texas, he likes HOT foods and has been
known to say they can’t make wings hot
enough. Just ask him sometime about
the “Dead Parrot Wings” he was given at
Ft. Myers, FL, by “yours truly.” I understand
they were still hot two days later.
Ray is a friend and good worker
and is liked by all who come in contact
with him. Keep up the good work, Ray.
Since it’s getting windy, I’m going
to go find a kite to fly. Take care and
will see you next issue.
Bill Munson
Sometimes I find that I really know a person well and at other times, I feel I
don’t know them at all. I am sure you can think of someone who fits into these
categories too. Not having a solid understanding why, this has caused me to delve
deeper into why this is true. Heck, just thinking about the number of people in the
world, this issue becomes mind boggling.
What about the people we don’t take the time to get to know? Do we ever
consider that those we have little knowledge about could be our guardian angel?
This caused me to take a deep breath and ponder this question even more deeply.
Like me, I’ll bet you have people in mind whom you would like to consider
communicating with and becoming better friends … those you could have a deeper
relationship with. How can you ever find them and make them a part of your
life?
I went on a quest to unravel this mystery and make sense of this philosophical
conundrum. I found a saying that helped make this an understandable process.
The saying starts as follows: “May those that love us, love us.” Pretty good
idea to have like-minded folks close to you. But, even though I would like to have
those treasured people in my world, that may not be possible. Every relationship
is a two-way street. What if that person does not want to give me or anyone else
the time of day? Wow, relationships can be difficult at any level!
The next part of the saying helped clear the fog in my head … that is “and
those who don’t love us, may God turn their heart.” The Almighty Architect of the
Universe is certainly able to create the culture to do that. But what if that person
does not see the path? What if the person sees the path and takes the other fork
in the road? That really does not help. Further light was contained in the last sentence
of the saying.
The final part of the saying has the answer and says … “If He can’t turn their
hearts, may He turn their ankles so we will know them by their limp.” That really
hit home to me. Each and every noble brother has the ability to conduct themselves
in the best manner of brotherly love and affection. Yet there will always be
individuals who are, by choice, never going to reach into our hearts because of
time, location or personal circumstances. At least now I can figure out how to sort
them out.
So now, I know it is up to me … and you … to make the step to say hello
and to include those you normally don’t talk to into your life. When was the last
time you called a noble you have not seen recently? Will you find that noble who
cannot drive and bring him to the next Cast meeting? I have my plan together and
will be watchful … what will your plan be?
Reception Unit
Michael Metzger
500 Club
Rick Solly
I hope this article finds everyone in good spirits and doing well. The Shrine office
and Club has had to close several times this year, and some Clubs and Units have had
to cancel some of their meetings due to inclement weather, including our Unit.
The 2011 Murat Shrine Circus is March 3–6 and the Reception Unit will again
be in charge of seating in the Pepsi Coliseum and will have coffee and donuts available
in the sign-up building. I want to THANK all nobles and their ladies for all they
do for the children, Reception Unit, and the Murat Shrine.
Tuesday, March 8, we will honor all past presidents of the Reception Unit by
having a Past Presidents’ Night, and the Lil’ Istiks will have their White Elephant
Auction. This will be a fun night for everyone; hope to see you there.
Don’t forget March 19 is the Potentate’s Ball and we have several tables of
eight available. Please call Kent Smith by March 1 at (317) 846-1650 for your reservations.
Dress is formalwear and Fez.
The Ringmaster’s Banquet will be Friday, April 8, and you must work four
shows at the circus to get your meal free (more details later).
Nobles and ladies, we meet the second Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
in the Tunisian Room for dinner and social, and then at 7 p.m. the ladies have their
meeting in the Mecca Room and we meet downstairs in the Mediterranean Room.
LEADERSHIP SEMINAR – Several officers attended the annual seminar which
was very informative. This event is a good way to receive instruction on the workings
of Murat and the proper way to conduct our meetings, etc.
POTENTATE’S BALL – If you haven’t signed up to attend the Potentate’s Ball
to be held on March 19, please do so as soon as possible. Illustrious Sir Kevin
Rhodes has planned a great evening. Let’s all get together and support Kevin and
Lady Debbie in their year as leaders of Murat Shrine.
ONE-DAY CLASS – Saturday, March 12, is the date of the Grand Master’s One-
Day Class at the Scottish Rite followed by a ceremonial at Murat. If you know a
good man who would like to be a better man through Masonry, please make him
aware of this one-day class and give him a petition.
CIRCUS – As usual, the Club will be out in force at the Murat Shrine Circus.
We assist the handicapped children in several ways and man the novelty booth.
Several members also help the Kentucky Colonels Club in passing out our hospital
papers. Try to set aside some time to help your fellow nobles in this worthwhile
endeavor. Please contact our chairman, Jim Huffman, for the schedule.
PAPER CRUSADE – We need your help at the annual Paper Crusade kick-off
on June 18 and 19. This is a great opportunity to inform the public about our philanthropy,
Shriners Hospitals for Children. If you want to work, please contact our
chairman, Ryan Powell. Please note your lady can also help you pass out papers.
It’s easy and fun.
BLACK CAMEL – The Club recently lost a very dedicated member and worker.
Our former Transportation chairman, Ernie Jackson, passed away in January.
Ernie will be missed by all who serve our patients and the Murat Shrine.
CALLING COMMITTEE – The Club has established a calling committee to visit
those members who are sick and in need of company and support from our members.
If you would like to participate, please contact our president, Mike Metzger.
AWARDS – Two members achieved milestones for driving our patients to our
hospitals.
Charlie Crabtree has made 15 trips and Luke Whitehouse has made 50 trips.
Congratulations to both for an excellent job.
Please join us on the third Wednesday of the month for our Stated Meetings.
We meet in the Mecca Room for dinner prior to the meeting.
Greetings from the 500 Club.
Well, parade season is just around the
corner and the Club is having our regular
fundraising raffle for the 500
Speedway Club. The winner in the first
drawing will have his or her choice of a
ride or drive around the track in a 500
race car or two penthouse tickets to this
year’s centennial 500-Mile Race. The
second winning ticket drawn would
receive the prize left after the first
choice. The prices for the raffle tickets
will be $2 each or three for $5. Tickets
are now available from Club members.
If you would like to purchase tickets by
mail, please contact Rick Solly by e-mail
at jassolly@yahoo.com.
We need to inform all members of
the Club and fellow Shriners that we
have parade cars available and need
more drivers. If a fellow Shriner would
like to join our Club, call Bruce
Raymond (834-1298) or Dan Price (659-
3138).
We are going to be putting parade
information in the Murat Magazine article
as there will be no more newsletters
being mailed with that information.
Members should attend the meetings
held on the first Wednesday of each
month. For parade information, please
contact the Murat Shrine, 510 N. New
Jersey St., Indianapolis IN 46204, in care
of the 500 Club.
This year’s 500 Festival parade,
celebrating the centennial 500-Mile
Race, is a very important parade to the
500 Club membership. We really need
to make a good impression this year
which could help our Club grow. Every
member of the Club who has a car, and
can still safely get in it, is encouraged to
participate. The Club is trying to gather
a list of parade participants so we will
know how many cars to count on and
how many parade passes will be needed.
Please contact Parade Car
Chairman Bruce Raymond at 834-1298.
Every parade participant will receive an
8” x 10” photo of driver & car and also
a 500 centennial decal for their car.
Pictures will be taken by Rick Solly.
RED BULL MOTORCYCLE RACE – This marks the third
year of the Red Bull Motorcycle Race at the Indianapolis
Motor Speedway. Last year, the Club sold raffle tickets for
two excellent seats for the event. At our March meeting, the
raffle will be rolled out among the members to sell the raffle
books to family, friends, businesses, and fellow Shriners. The
proceeds will go into the Club treasury. This is the only
money maker for the Club. Please try to sell or buy as many
tickets as you can so we may continue our contributions to
our fraternal causes.
PLAQUE PROGRAM – We are entering our fourth year
of the Murat plaque program. So far we have received donations
from several Clubs and Units, individuals, and businesses.
All Shriners are asked to continue to promote the plaques,
especially to businesses you deal with. A plaque hung on the
wall of a business does more to promote our hospitals than
anywhere else.
CIRCUS – The circus is in full swing and promises to be
very successful even in these hard times. As usual, the Club
will pass out hospital papers to help inform the general public
regarding the excellent care provided to the children of
Indiana.
SMOKY MOUNTAIN FUN FEST – May is the annual
gathering of Shriners from many Shrine centers. This is a
great time for good fellowship and fun, so plan to attend this
pilgrimage to Pigeon Forge, TN. There will be plenty of
Shrine activities including a parade on Saturday morning
which will leave plenty of time for the ladies to shop. Please
check with the Fraternal Office for hotel reservations.
UNIFORMS – We have two white jackets and black
string ties available to sell. One jacket is a 1X and we also
have a 3X. If you are interested, please contact our uniform
officer.
CALLING COMMITTEE – The Club has established a
calling committee to visit those Colonels who are sick and in
need of company and support from our members. If you
would like to be included on this important committee, you
can contact our president, Mike Harrison.
PAPER CRUSADE – Don’t forget the annual Paper
Crusade to be kicked off on June 18 and 19. Last year the
Colonels were third in total collections but more importantly,
we were able to pass out several hundred papers. President
Mike Harrison will work with our crusade chairman to man
our site for the two-day crusade.
Please join us on the first Wednesday of the month in
the Mecca Room for dinner followed by our Stated Meeting at
7 p.m. We look forward to seeing our newest members and
those who rarely attend. Come to the meetings and get
involved.
At our meeting we got a special treat. Our president, John
Ellis, and his wife had taken a tour of the Boeing Aircraft production
facility at Payne Field in Everett, WA, this past summer.
The video presentation showed that due to the size of the
operation, motor transport coaches are used to transport the
tour groups around. Also, Boeing has strict security procedures
in place for visitors.
The factory runs three shifts, 24 hours a day, and has
30,000 employees. What was really staggering was the aerial
view of the physical layout of the plant.
Boeing 747s, 767s, 777s (this one has a range of more
than 10,000 miles) and 787s are produced at the plant.
Plans were also discussed for developing a parade schedule
for this year.
Police Club and Drill Team
Don L. Weilhammer Jr.
Brothers,
This is a first, at least that I know of, that a Club meeting
had to be cancelled due to weather! I am sure it has been
many years since that has happened ... could it have even
been as long ago as the blizzard in the late ’70s?
I would like to thank the Club on behalf of the
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department for the nice floral
arrangement, complete with red, white & blue ribbons, that
was sent to IMPD Officer David S. Moore’s viewing. If you
recall, Officer Moore was shot during a traffic stop and died
from his wounds on 01-26-11. I was heavily involved with the
viewing and funeral, and I was surprised to see Club member
Todd Jayne with his bagpipes, along with three other
Highlanders, at the funeral to play. Thank you, guys; it was
great to see you and you sounded wonderful!
Remember that the circus is coming up March 3–6
(Thursday through Sunday). We can always use help with
security. I will be signing more members up at the March 1
meeting, but if you cannot make the meeting, just show up at
the circus—we will be glad to put you to work.
Be safe there and I hope to see you at the circus or one
of our meetings on the first Tuesday of each month.
It’s March 2011 here in Franklin at the Johnson County Shrine Club. With
March, we can look forward to the “wearing of the green” for the celebration of
Saint Patrick’s Day. Come down to our Shrine Club and see how we celebrate this
fun time of the year. The Club will be decorated in shamrocks and lots of green.
Hope some of that old Irish luck rubs off on the Club.
As the year 2011 rolls into its third month, President Barry Cook has to be
very pleased with his first quarter as the Club’s leader. With the help of Ron Bailey,
past president, Don Borski, Jim Carter, and many others, the first quarter has to be
very exciting for all concerned.
January 22 was a very successful evening at the Club. Steak dinners were
served from 4 to 8 p.m. Before the kitchen closed, 105 steaks were cooked and
served. Then after closing the kitchen, the band American Cheese opened an
evening of dancing. This was the first time a band had been in the Club in quite
a long time. Well, the band played right up to midnight, and it appeared a good
time was had by all! Being such a success meant a rather big cleanup. President
Barry locked up around 2:30 a.m. What a great night … good job to all involved.
The February 19 steak dinner with the band Eastern Wing also was a success.
As previously promised by our president, “If the first steak dinner/dance was
a success,” there will be more of the same! Well, Barry is as good as his word …
put these dates on your calendar: March 26 – steak dinner and Night Deposit Band;
April 23 – steak dinner and Ready’s Dream Band.
It appears that if the crowds continue to come back, there will be more steak
dinner/dance band evenings. Wouldn’t it be great to host such an evening during
the Johnson County 4H Fair?
Something else we can look to for another first for our Shrine Club … March
2, which is a Wednesday evening, the Club will be serving a “All the Shrimp You
Can Eat” from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
As you can readily see, the Johnson County Shrine Club is the place you
might want to come and visit. And don’t forget, Friday evenings the kitchen is
open. Come down and see us. See you next issue.
Tarum
March Madness is upon us. Did
we all fill out our brackets? Always an
exciting time in college basketball. Of
course, it also heralds the approaching
arrival of spring, truly a welcome respite
from the long cold Indiana winter. That
means the Club is gearing up for the
summer season. Plans are being made
for the annual spring cleanup, the coming
work for the opening of the pool.
Alas that won’t be for awhile yet. But it
is coming. Our officers will be asking for
help to get the Club ready for the busy
season. All of us need to pitch in when
and where we can.
February was fun with the annual
Sweethearts Dinner and crowning of the
Sweetheart King. He will be announced
in the next month’s magazine, as it is
unknown at the time of this writing.
However, we do have some award
winners to list here from January’s
installation.
First of all, Chief Rabban Charlie
Crabtree was our installing officer. We
were honored to have in attendance
past Murat Potentate and current
Imperial Assistant Rabban John Cinotto
as our guest at installation. This was
quite an honor for Tarum. The 2010
award winners are as follows: Shrine
Lady of the Year went to Shirley Pippin.
The Presidents Award was given to Past
President Mark Greulich, and Shriner of
the Year went to Ted May. All of the
winners have busted their collective
humps for Tarum and they are to be
congratulated.
2011 officers are: President Dave
Bartlemay, our third two-timer; First
Vice, Jon Anderson; Second Vice, Robert
Whalen; Treasurer, Nate Rigsby, and
Secretary, Matt Fisher. As you can see,
there are some new members stepping
up to guide the Club. Tarum needs to
see more of this. The 2011 ladies officers
are: President, Vergie Markley (she has
served in this capacity a few times); Vice
President, Barb Moistner; Secretary,
Marie Bunch (she has been doing a
great job in this position and we are
happy to have her continue); and
Treasurer, Cheryel Greulich. With the
exception of Barb, these ladies have
held these positions before. Barb shows
us that newer members can guide us
forward. Thank you to all of Tarum's
2011 officers for leading us in the coming
year.
Remember to attend Friday night
dinners. Now that spring is almost here,
snow and ice are no longer a reason to
miss dinner. We all need to attend at
least once per month. This is one of the
ways we keep the Club going. So do
your part and come to Tarum. We need
Legion of Honor
Jeff Dickey
you and miss you. Food, fun and fellowship
are a great way to start the weekend.
Also remember Breakfast at the
Lodge the first Saturday of the month.
This is one way you can help your
Lodge through these tough economic
times. The food is good and the people
work very hard to cook, serve and clean
up these breakfasts. Make a note now to
help your Club and your Lodge when
and where you can. See you at Tarum.
Bob Watson
Wow, I can’t believe it’s March already and if it’s March, that means one
thing—the circus is in town. That’s right, the Murat Shrine Circus is coming to town
March 3–6. As usual, the Legion of Honor will be helping out by presenting colors
for the Thursday and Friday evening performances as well as both performances
on Saturday. The circus is our temple’s biggest fundraiser of the year, so let’s
all get behind the effort and raise as much money as we can for “our kids.”
Next up is one of the biggest fun events of the year, the Potentate’s Ball, on
March 19 at the temple. It’s been a long cold winter and I think we are all ready
to celebrate the arrival of spring and warmer temperatures. What better way to do
that than dancing the night away with the Potentate at his crowning event. The
Color Guard will be there to kick off the evening with the presentation of colors.
Later this month, March 22–27 is the International Association Legions of
Honor annual convention to be held in Branson, MO. Several of our membership
will be making the trip to Branson to enjoy the fellowship of our brother Legion
nobles.
Out Unit is planning another visit to the VA Hospital, here in Indianapolis,
scheduled for May 24. During these visits, our members, along with our spouses
or significant others, distribute socks and quarters to the patients. Patients can use
the quarters in the vending machines in the wee hours of the morning. These hospital
visits are fast becoming one of the most, if not the most, rewarding things we
do as a unit.
Speaking of hospital visits, our new Chief of Staff, Tony Stout, has made the
suggestion that our Unit visit one of our Shriners Hospitals so we can witness firsthand
the miracles that our hospitals perform on a daily basis. Tony is going to be
the point man on this project and as he provides me with more details, I will pass
them along. We are tentatively looking at a September date to travel to the hospital
in Lexington, KY.
Larry Hearn, our captain of the Color Guard, is planning on becoming a candidate
in the Great Lakes Shrine Association officer line. Let’s get behind Larry and
wish him our best.
On February 12, some of our guys, and our wives, traveled to the Madison
County Shrine Club in Anderson to present colors at their Potentate’s Ball and
Roast. The food was great, the fellowship wonderful, and the laughs a-plenty.
Many thanks to the Anderson unit for putting on a great show.
On January 24, our sergeant at arms, Lloyd Hearn, underwent more surgery
for problems with one of his knees. Let’s all keep Lloyd in our thoughts and
prayers and wish him a speedy recovery.
Well, I’m out of breath and I think I’m out of time as well. So until next
month, remember, “It’s an honor to belong to the Legion of Honor.”
Fred Crace
The April meeting of the Hancock
County Shrine Club will be a joint meeting
with the nobles of the Shelby County
Shrine Club and ladies from both
groups. This meeting will be held at the
Firemen’s Club
Tuesday, April 19. Social hour will be at
6 p.m. with a buffet dinner at 7 p.m.
Entertainment will be provided. Noble
Dennis Parks, president of Shelby
County Shrine Club, has promised a
great time for all. Nobles from both
Tim Whitaker
Clubs are urged to attend this annual
event. Come out and enjoy the food
and the fellowship.
Welcome Nobles!
As I began writing this article, I was also watching the TV: Celebration of a Fallen
IMPD Hero, Officer David Moore. A young man serving our community on a Sunday
morning was shot and killed while “just doing his job.” I could only think about a tragic
event that took a young officer’s life while in the prime of his career. His parents
(both, active or retired IMPD officers) are to be commended for the way they handled
the loss of their son. Our hearts go out to them and their family and may their strong
faith in God help them with the grieving process during these difficult times. The tribute
was appropriate and from the heart of all those leaders involved. We grieve with
them at their loss.
Brothers and Sisters in Blue! Firefighters and police officers have a common
bond in this city. Each and every officer knows that each day, each incident, could be
their last. When we lose one of our own, we all grieve at the loss. Most of us have
experienced the loss of a co-worker and each time we do, it never gets any easier.
May God watch over and protect each and every one of our Public Safety employees
as they “just do their jobs” … Protecting and Serving!
Murat Shrine Circus will be held March 3–6, 2011. Once again, we will be
staffing the First Aid/Lost Children Room. Our new circus director, Charlie Crabtree, is
Special Night on Friday, March 4 – It’s the PUBLIC SAFETY NIGHT at the 7 p.m.
performance. Please contact the Fraternal Office for the special tickets or more information.
The Ringmaster’s Banquet will be held on April 8 for all workers who work four
or more shows. Please check next month’s Murat Magazine for more information.
The Potentate’s Ball will be March 19 at $100 per couple including dinner,
and the group this year will be “Double Exposure.” If you can’t make the dinner,
please try to make the Ball only. The cost for the Ball only is $40 per couple. It’s
a great night to get dust off the formalwear and let your lady buy a new dress. See
you there!
Boone County Shrine Club
Greetings from the Boone County Shrine Club,
We would like to begin by thanking our Illustrious
Potentate Kevin Rhodes and his Lady Debbie, Past Potentate
Craig Hinshaw and Lady Kay, and newly elected Outer Guard
Arthur Borton and his mother Margaret for joining us at our
officer installation dinner in January. It was truly a pleasure to
have all of you join us for our special evening. Thank you to
Murat for all of the support you give our Unit. As our president,
Devon Dumford, leads us through 2011, be assured the
Boone County Shrine Club is here to support the efforts of
Murat and our hospitals.
Mark your calendars for our Spring Fish Fry on May 21
at the American Legion in Lebanon. Serving is from 4:30 p.m.
to 7:30 p.m. and features some of the best fish, chicken strips,
fries, vinegar and regular coleslaw, corn, and fried biscuits
with apple butter you’ll ever taste! This is a great fundraiser for
our Unit and we appreciate everyone’s support. More details
to follow in April’s article.
Patrick Hornett
We would like to express our sincerest prayers and well
wishes to two of the Unit’s past presidents. Past President Carl
Trump and past President Jerry Trapp have been recovering
from recent illnesses. We want them and all members of our
Unit to know that you are in our thoughts and prayers and we
are here for you.
We are looking forward to supporting the Shrine Circus
in March and can’t wait to see the smiling faces of the kids as
they come in to see a great show. The Boone County Shrine
Club will be there to support this event as always by selling
activity books and whatever else needs to be done. This is a
great event that benefits our Murat Shrine so come out and
let’s help support the World’s Greatest Philanthropy!
Finally, we encourage all nobles interested in joining our
Unit to attend one of our monthly meetings. We meet at the
American Legion, 2010 Hendricks Drive, in Lebanon on the
third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. Please come and enjoy
the fellowship of the Boone County Shrine Club.
Corvette Club
Bruce W. Smith
Share a Ride With the Best and
the Blessed!
The Murat Shrine Corvette Club of
Indianapolis happily and humbly counts
their blessings and wants to share them
with you in the form of an offer we
hope you won’t refuse!
As a proud, cohesive group, we
know the amount of time and effort
taken by all Murat Shrine Units prior to
a parade. Our chests swell when we see
a variety of colorful pageantry presented
by the Murat Shrine Units. We applaud
you all! Before a parade our group, the
Murat Corvette Club, is seen lining up
our mechanical steeds in perfect order,
giving the body and wheels one last
chamois and spit-shine, and applying a
splash of window cleaner for a smudge
we can see, but others claim they cannot.
We walk among one another’s
vehicles like a general’s command
inspection of the troops. We help one
another with last minute cleaning. If a
mishap takes place just before a parade,
we rally to aid a brother and car in need.
Finally, we know the clean, pure sound
of the engines will be additionally
noticed by parade goers. With a uniform
look, inclusive of the honored fez,
we strive to drive in perfect groupings
throughout the parade route.
We don our giant Mickey Mouse
gloves or toot a funny horn (if we have
one) and wave to the delights of the
children and the pointing, smiling
Corvette admirers, reminding us of the
main reason we are here—representing
the Shriners Hospitals for Children and
the Murat Shrine of Indianapolis.
Perfection and purpose is why we
believe the Corvette Club was honored
by Past Potentate Craig T. Hinshaw with
the 2010 Club of the Year award!
Don’t own a Corvette but would
like to someday? Wonder what it must
be like to feel the rumble of the Corvette
engine and hear the parade crowd’s
applause? Not completely sure you want
to join our Unit yet? Well, here’s an offer
to try us out! You, our Murat Shrine
brother, are invited to ride in one of our
upcoming 2011 scheduled parades of
which the Murat Corvette Club will be in
attendance. You may even get to ride
with our 2010 Driver of the Year, Louie
Galati! Here is all you have to do. Just
e-mail our Club secretary, Mike
McLaughlin, at mcmcl@aol.com or president,
Gary Cleveland, at
gary@larue.insurance.com and type “Put
Me In A Parade” in the subject line.
Leaving your contact information, one of
Directors Staff
them will contact you to discuss
arrangements. That’s it! No strings
attached. It is just our way of helping
you see our Unit firsthand before your
decision is made. We think you may
become addicted as much as we are—
either way we want you to feel happy
and blessed too.
Gerald Frost
Greetings Nobles and Friends,
Hey, do you believe it is already March? Where is the year going so fast? By the
time you are reading this article, we are still looking for volunteers for the Shrine Circus
booth. We hope you were able to work this fun and exciting event. We are underway
with the planning and building of our new stunt for this year’s SDA convention
in Omaha, NE. We are starting to plan for this spring and summer’s bus trips and the
Paper Crusade. We would like to welcome after his promotion at our January meeting
to full director, George Baugh II. George has been an asset to our Unit since he
joined. George has only missed one meeting in two years. Congratulations, George,
for your record setting Nubian attendance.
We are always looking forward to seeing everyone at all our events and functions.
Your help is always needed, so try to volunteer for as many as you can attend.
You only get out of the Unit what you put into the Unit. Nubians are encouraged to
attend all events to meet fellow directors and make new friends. Meeting attendance
is also very important so you can stay abreast of what’s going on throughout the year.
During the last year, we recruited three Nubians for the Directors Staff. I would
say it was a very successful year for new members but could be much better. Now
can we do the same or better for 2011? This year our goal should be at least six new
members, so everyone work on your recruiting skills to help build a larger and better
Directors Staff Unit. Due to the bad weather, illness and the timing of meetings,
attendance has dropped off a little in December and January. Let’s see if we can all
attend more meetings throughout the year. Nubians … where are you?
Just a reminder that all dues are to be turned in by March 1, 2011, to remain
in good standing within the Directors Staff. Please feel free to mail your check to
me, Gerald Frost, 3614 Mistletoe Dr., Indianapolis, IN 46227.
Make your checks out to the Directors Staff. Dues are $20 for full directors
and $10 for veterans. We still have several members who have not paid dues for
2010.
IMPORTANT DATES TO REMEMBER IN 2011
Stated Meeting – March 21 @ 7 p.m. at Murat Shrine
Potentate’s Ball – March 19
Directors Staff Meeting – March 28 @ 7 p.m.
SDA Convention – March 30 through April 2 in Omaha, NE
We are always looking for good men to develop an even better Directors Staff.
Have a safe and enjoyable spring and summer. “Shriners … Having Fun and
Helping Kids.”
NexGen
We are off to a good start for 2011.
We have a few things under our belt
already in January—a great New Year’s
Eve party and Murat Shrine Leadership
Seminar. In February we had our combined
feature event with the Mobil
Nobles and the Divan hosted by us: on
Friday, February 18, the Murat Ultimate
Band Night/Mardi Gras Party at 8 p.m. in
the Tunisian Room after the Little Pig
activities.
I have received some compliments
from the use of the weekly e-mail
newsletter as a periodic communication
tool this year. If you have ideas on what
you would like included in the newsletters,
please contact me at muratnexgen@gmail.com.
If you are not receiving
the e-mail newsletter and you would like
to, please contact me at the same e-mail
address.
2011 dues notices have been
mailed and many of the NexGen members
have stated that they appreciated
the included pre-addressed envelope. It
made it convenient and easy for them to
send back the form with their dues payment
for only the additional cost of a 44
cent stamp.
A reminder that if you have not
signed up to help us sell novelties at the
Murat Shrine Circus on March 3–6,
please contact the NexGen Unit Circus
Committee: Joe Stoutner at (317) 850-
5029 or Luke Stark at (317) 455-5853 and
we will help you find shift assignments
that fit your schedule. I look forward to
seeing and working with you all there.
It has always been a lot of fun selling the
items as well as having fellowship with
Unit members.
The NexGen officers and I are in
the process of finalizing a March
Madness themed get-together (4-lecture
type event) for later in March, probably
at Taylor’s 2, for all of us to meet and
have fun and fellowship but in a different
venue. This is one of a couple of
Kevin Scott
new ideas that we will be bringing to
you this year. We have received some
feedback and are making changes to the
Unit and its activities based on that feedback.
Those changes will be discussed
and announced at Stated Meetings and
possibly via the weekly e-mail newsletter.
Please join us at our March Stated
Meeting on Tuesday, March 8, so you
can provide your own feedback and be
included in the decision-making
processes of your Unit.
Final reminders of a few other
March events you might want to attend:
1) Grand Master’s One-Day Class
“All the Way in One Day” on March 12,
8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Scottish Rite
Cathedral.
2) St. Patrick’s Day with the official
downtown parade and unofficial
pub crawl. For more info on the parade,
go to this link:
Clowns
When we are in makeup, one of the things we always
hear is “Do something funny.” As a Shrine clown, we always
do our best to please and put smiles on the faces of all we
meet but without prior training, this would be hard to do. We
meet twice a month to learn all the secrets of the clown trade
such as magic, balloons, juggling and how to put makeup on.
There is nothing like sitting around a table with a bunch of
guys and putting on makeup.
If you want to learn to “Do something funny,” please
come to one of our meetings which are on the second and
fourth Wednesday of each month starting at 7 p.m. and see if
you would like to join our merry little group. If you need a
clown for any reason to make you laugh, please call (317)
716-0676—we will do almost anything. I will leave you with
this joke donated by “WrongWay.”
The Talking Centipede
A single guy decided life would be more fun if he had
a pet.
So he went to the pet store and told the owner that he
wanted to buy an unusual pet.
Allan Hall
After some discussion, he finally bought a talking centipede
(100-legged bug), which came in a little white box to
use for his house.
He took the box back home, found a good spot for the
box, and decided he would start off by taking his new pet to
church with him.
So he asked the centipede in the box, "Would you like
to go to church with me today? We will have a good time."
But there was no answer from his new pet.
This bothered him a bit, but he waited a few minutes
and then asked again, "How about going to church with me
and receive blessings?"
But again, there was no answer from his new friend and
pet. So he waited a few minutes more, thinking about the situation.
The guy decided to invite the centipede one last time.
This time he put his face up against the centipede's
house and shouted, "Hey, in there! Would you like to go to
church with me and learn about God?"
This time, a little voice came out of the box, "I heard
you the first time! I'm putting on my shoes!"
MARCH 2011
19

Band
Why do we submit articles for the
monthly Murat Magazine?
1. Of course, to remind the nobility
of the Great Philanthropy for which we
are responsible: 22 Shriners Hospitals ...
remember the kids.
2. Our dedication to the 125-yearold
Murat Shrine.
3. For the news, events and activities
of our Units and Clubs. The Shrine
Band, being one of the oldest, largest and
most recognized nationally with its musical
contribution, lets the world know
we're alive and well.
4. To add a little humor and trivia.
(a) Silver is the most popular color for
cars in the U.S.; (b) Albert Einstein never
knew how to drive a car, no matter what
color it was.
As the March 2011 Murat Magazine
deadline approaches in just three days,
we look to the future and what lies
ahead. The Band, after the holidays, gets
under sail again preparing for six circus
Daughters of the Nile
Leonard Hull
performances, March 3–6.
Oh yes, deadline for taxes,
April 18. Start saving to
pay for that prosperity
promised last November.
Gas today is more than
three dollars per gallon. I
can remember when it
was 17 cents, but I can also remember
when a penny was what a postcard once
cost. Yesterday I topped off my gas tank
for $25 and it was only half empty. I went
home (broke into my piggy bank) and
got out 25 one-dollar bills and measured
them—one-eighth of an inch. With the
aid of a pre-WWII slide rule and a World
Almanac, I calculated that a stack of
uncirculated thousand dollar bills, 6 inches
high, would be one million dollars.
A billion dollar stack of thousand
dollar bills is 500 feet and a
trillion dollars would be 94.7 miles.
With our country's national debt at
(you name it) plus or minus 10 trillion
dollars, it would be 950
miles (the distance from
Indy to Daytona).
Oh, we miss our
Snowbirds but not the torrential
rains, the fog, wildfires,
the 90-degree days followed
by 45-degree nights
with 100 percent humidity and you call this
living?
With the main activity bingo, shuffleboard,
horseshoes, cards and swatting bugs
are some of the more strenuous activities.
Sour grapes you say? Not on your tin-type.
“Gimmie that Hoosier variety” any time.
But you know what, after many
inches of snowfall, it’s good to stay home
and save an inch of greenbacks.
Don't forget to adjust your
clocks March 13 as we prepare for
spring’s Daylight Saving Time:
“spring forward, fall back.”
See you at the circus.
Ruth Ann Kelly
Ice!! High winds!! Cold temperatures!!
Snow!! Sleet!! Hopefully, we are
now through with these “annoying”
weather conditions we have been experiencing
in January and February. Yes,
days were great for the car wash industry,
hardware store suppliers, grocery
stores, and children who can stay home
and build a snowman, sled and have
snowball fights. However, the opposite
side finds the clearing of driveways and
walkways, high heating bills and furnace
repairs, doctor’s office calls and
medicine, car crashes and dents, towing
bills and insurance claims to be unwanted,
frustrating and a drain on one’s
income and patience. Yes, winter is
here but hopefully on its way out.
A big thank-you to everyone who
helped Queen Elana Dix and her officers
during the February Supreme
Queen’s Visitation. Koran Temple’s
“Hoosier Hospitality” extended to
Supreme Queen Susan E. Layman, Isis
Temple No. 41, Evansville, IN, was well
received and greatly appreciated.
To all officers, committee members,
sewing chairpersons, temple Units,
and any members of Koran Temple who
were a part of making this year successful
and enjoyable, Queen Elana expresses
her heartfelt thanks. She also sends
best wishes to Queen-elect Sandra
Kessler and her officers for the coming
year.
Queen Elana’s last sewing session
will be held on Wednesday, March 16,
from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Corinthian
Room. The Queen will furnish the meat
dish while everyone else is asked to
contribute one item to this pitch-in dinner.
We are still trying to meet Pam
Herther’s quota of 2,000 pillows for the
children in the hospital. Come and enjoy
this day with friends.
Plan to attend our Stated Meeting
on Wednesday, March 2, at 7 p.m. We
will have our election of officers for the
coming year. Be sure to attend this
meeting and take part in Koran
Temple’s activities. Due to weather conditions
in February, the memorial service
will be rescheduled at a later date.
A big teddy bear hug goes out to
one of our special Princesses, Karen
Clingler. Her generous donation of 2,000
children’s reading books to the Shriners
Hospitals, valued at more than $3,000,
exhibits the great philanthropic efforts
we contribute throughout the year.
Next time you see Karen, give her a big
hug and tell her thank you.
Princess Tiffany Stergar, sociology
professor at Harrison College, made two
monetary donations from her students
for a total amount of $225 to Koran
Temple. Tiffany, this kind donation was
greatly appreciated.
Queen-elect Sandra Kessler’s
installation of officers will be Saturday,
March 26, at 2 p.m. in the Arabian
Room. It will be open to the public with
a reception immediately following
installation. Practice will be held on
Friday, March 25, at 6 p.m. Decorating
for her installation will follow the practice.
Final thought: Today’s the oldest
day you’ve ever been; it’s also the
youngest you will ever be; enjoy this
day while it lasts …
Patrol
Greetings everyone. “All the Way
in One Day,” the Grand Master's oneday
class, is coming next month on
Saturday, March 12. Now is our chance
to recruit new Patrol members. If you
have a friend whom you know to be a
good fellow, or even a Blue Lodge
member, this is the time to recruit. Murat
temple has lost more than 500 members
in 2010 due to nonpayment of dues,
demits and deaths. This is the perfect
opportunity to fill those vacant chairs.
Our Patrol meeting this month will
be on the 5th of March at the Speakeasy
Pub at 2 p.m. From there we will proceed
to the fairgrounds and participate in the circus
parade. The address is 2002 N.
Arlington Ave.
Saturday, June 11, there will be a
Hog Roast at the Speakeasy Pub. All
Shriners are, of course, invited and encouraged
to attend. Mark your calendar.
Welcome to our newest members,
David Everman and Tony Stout.
Ladies Oriental Shrine
Our past president, Jack Bell, recently
had double lung replacement surgery.
He has been in contact with some of our
Patrol members and reports that he is on
the SLOW road to recovery. Best wishes
go out from us to Jack and his family.
There is a gun raffle in the works.
The Divan are currently looking into it.
Let's hope they have it before deer season.
Stay tuned to this channel for updates.
The 137th Imperial Session takes
place in Denver, CO, July 3–7. Lots of
events take place at the session. There is
a temple meeting the 4th and a parade in
downtown Denver also on the 4th. There
is a lot to see and do in the area such as
Bro. Buffalo Bill Cody’s gravesite just a
Dan Ryan
few miles west of Denver on I-70,
Leadville, CO, which is almost two miles
high in elevation; Central City and
Blackhawk, CO, where they have limited
stakes gambling; Rocky Mountain
National Park which is north and west of
Denver; and, of course, the Coors
Brewery in Golden, CO.
Notable dates this month are March
5 – Patrol Meeting, March 9 – Ash
Wednesday, March 13 – Daylight Saving
Time starts, March 17 – St. Patrick's Day,
March 20 – first day of spring, and March
21 – the Stated Meeting.
Those pictured are your new Patrol
officers. Left to right are Vice President,
John Montgomery; President, Phillip
Goodwin; Assistant Rabban, James Priest;
Treasurer, Michael Whitaker; and
Secretary, Dan Ryan.
Please remember to keep our servicemen
and women in your prayers
and see you all at the next meeting.
My final correspondence as your
High Priestess is dedicated to every lady
in Tarum Court. Wow!! What a wonderful
and successful lifetime experience I
have had this past year. My deepest
thanks to the past High Priestesses, officers,
pages, and members for making
this endeavor one I shall never forget.
Without everyone’s encouragement,
help, and guidance, this year would not
have been possible. These special
memories will be in my heart forever.
Finally, on many occasions I was given
the honor of representing Tarum Court
No. 14 when visiting various Courts and
at our Grand Council Session in
Houston, TX. This made me feel very
special, and I loved every minute of this
honor. God Bless everyone who made
my “once in a lifetime” event possible.
I want to acknowledge Past
Potentate Craig Hinshaw and his and
our Lady Kay for their kind help this
past year. Remembering the many lovely
gifts I received throughout this year,
mine were the greatest!! Thanks for
those surprises.
Finally, to my 69-year lifetime
companion Jim, thanks for your love
and kindness during this past year. He
told me that he joined the Masonic Blue
Lodge and Murat Shrine so we would
have some place to go when we got
older. Well, we are presently “up in our
years” and still going to many functions.
Our love for the work of the Shriners
made this effort one of happiness and
success. Thanks for helping us attain
this level in our lives. Thanks, Jim, for
making this lifetime journey possible.
Past Queen Peg Strawser initiated
me into LOS in 1994 as a “thoroughbred
filly.” Since that time, I held different
offices and served on many committees.
I have visited the following Shriners
Hospitals: St. Louis, MO; Toledo and
Cincinnati, OH; Erie, PA; Lexington, KY;
Houston, TX; and Toronto, Canada. I
was present when they placed a white
fez in Houston and a one million dollar
brick in the Lexington hospital. In
February, I attended the instituting of
our newest LOS Court, Nailah No. 107,
located in St. Louis.
To the incoming officers, best of
luck to all as your year of service begins.
High Priestess-elect Lady Barbara Smith
and her officers will have their installation
on Saturday, March 12, in the
Arabian Room at 1 p.m. followed by her
reception. This event is open to the
public. Come and support these new
officers for the coming year. Practice
will be on Thursday, March 10, at 6:30
p.m. If you cannot attend, please call
Lady Barbara Smith at (317) 846-1650 as
soon as possible.
Finally, I would like to share one
memorable High Priestess event with
everyone. While at Grand Council in
Houston, TX, my granddaughter Annie
prepared a flower garden in my front
yard and placed 12 large pink flamingos
around this area. When I returned, I
was surprised to see my “flamingo birds”
waiting for me at my home.
CIRCUS
Murat Shrine Circus
CHARLIE CRABTREE
Iam writing this article about five
weeks prior to Circus. I cannot tell
you that the weather cooperated
with us or not. I cannot tell you that
Circus went off without a hitch. I cannot
tell you that it is a financial success.
What I can tell you is that there
were a lot of dedicated workers there.
I can state that because I know that
Shriners, their ladies and friends want
to see Murat succeed. So at the writing
of this article we really do not know
anything. Hopefully, by the time of
Ringmaster’s Banquet we will know
exactly what Circus has done.
The only thing that I can say with
100 percent assurance is that all of the
hard work that you put forth at the
Circus is greatly appreciated by Murat.
So one great big THANK YOU.
MURAT RV CLUB IS SEEKING NEW MEMBERS TO JOIN OUR
CARAVAN TO FUN!
If you enjoy the great outdoors, like to travel and eat good food, and have
fun meeting new people, the RV Club is for you! Our next meeting is March 15 in
the Tunisian Room at 6 p.m. or contact
Dan Ouimette, (317)-308-0244, for more
information about the club.
December brought the 2010 travels
of the Murat RV Club to a close with their
annual Christmas Party and installation of
new officers. The festivities were presided
over by outgoing President Irv Lewis as he
passed the gavel to the capable hands of
Dave Maudlin. Murat Oriental Guide Bill
Rasner administered the oath of office to
the new officers and the party began. 2010
was a great year to be active in the RV Club
as we traveled around Indiana, had great
food, spent time seeing the sights, checked
out local shops, sat by crackling campfires
and told tall tales. I know we in Indiana
are still shoveling the sunshine with record
snow and cold, while a great number of
our Club members have migrated to
warmer climates; it’s not too early to
dream of the exciting year of camping to
come. 2011 will be filled with more fun
and fraternity. We plan at least one camp
weekend a month to further explore our
great state. It’s even rumored that we may
wander into Kentucky! Our first campout
for the 2011 season is our shakedown trip the end of April, so we hope that our
fair weather members basking in the sunshine states will make the pilgrimage back
to join us.
Murat Transportation Clubs
DON SCHILDGEN, MURAT TRANSPORTATION COORDINATOR
Iwould like to inform you about our County Transportation
Clubs and the transportation services they provide to the
children and families going to our four Shriners Hospitals.
We sometimes take them for granted and many of us are
unaware that some of the county Clubs provide transportation
services. This is a group of good dedicated drivers, coordinators,
and their ladies who compose the Murat Transportation
Clubs. They are the ones who get up at 4, 5 or 6 a.m. and
spend 10 or more hours on the road to provide this service for
the families, our hospitals, and Murat.
During their trips (usually four hours each way), the
families get an opportunity to get to know more about the
Shrine through the drivers. They find out we do more than
wear funny hats, drive small cars, clown around, and participate
in parades. Our drivers are the window to what the
Shrine stands for in the eyes of our hospital families.
I would like to recognize the county Clubs and the coordinators
who make up the Murat Transportation Clubs
throughout the Murat jurisdiction. The Clubs and nobles who
make it happen are Clyde Martin, Bartholomew S.C.; Tom
Fager, Kokomo S.C.; Richard Hagemier, La-Or-Ma S.C.;
