Tammy and I would like to
thank all of you who attended
the Potentate’s Ball. It was a
wonderful evening and thanks
to all of you, we will have great
memories. Thanks to all of the
Clubs and Units for turning out
for the 2013 Leadership Seminar;
the four-year decline in
attendance has been reversed!
We had 104 attend this year
and 65 percent of our Clubs
and Units were represented.
This is the largest attendance
since 2009, so we all get a big pat on the back
for having the insight that Our Future Is Now.
If your Club or Unit was unable to attend, we
have CDs available. Also remember that your
Divan rep is a great resource if you need assistance
with protocol or procedures.
As our Shrine Circus is quickly approaching
(April 11–14), we need your support this year.
Due to the new location, we will be in need
of extra ushers and staffing. If you have time,
please contact the Fraternal Office to volunteer.
Tammy and I wish to invite you to join
Team Murat at the Race for the Cure April 20;
please check out the sign-up and details in this
magazine. The Divan is looking forward to our
visit to Madison County Shrine Club on March
30 for the Madison County Potentate’s Ball. It
has always been a great evening; if you would
like to attend, please contact their Shrine
Club. I hope you plan on attending our first
annual Murat Brown County Summer Festival
June 7–9. We have a lot of activities planned
along with a Shrine Parade on Saturday, June 8.
Rooms are limited so please check out the ad
in this magazine.
For all of you golfers, I hope to see you at all
POTENTATE message
Our Future Is Now
Focus and Simplify
of the Club and Unit outings this
year. Team Divan will be participating
and since we have not gotten
any better, it appears we will be
cheating more than ever. Along
with that, the Potentate’s Golf Outing
is set for September 9 at the
Maple Creek Golf Course, so please
mark your calendars.
On May 24, we will be honored
to have our Imperial Potentate
Al Madsen in town for the race
weekend. If you would like to meet
the Imperial Sir, he will be at the
temple on Friday evening enjoying the Oasis
Lounge. We are also going to have a comedy
show that evening in the Arabian Room. Comedian
Noble Randy Riggle will be performing
the Nostalgia Show. The show plays very
well to a middle-aged to older audience as it is
about the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s. Details on the
show will be in the April magazine. Please take
some time and visit our Murat Shrine Web site
at http://www.muratshrine.org/. You can get
information on the calendar, circus, petitions,
hospital, Shriners Village, and you can also
review the history of Murat.
Thanks to the Murat Patrol for the free party
they had for the nobility last month. This is
exactly what we need to do to get our nobles
involved and have a great time along the way.
In closing, God Bless our Shriners Hospitals
Staff.
Yours in the Faith,
“We Feared the Worst and
Found the Best”
Gordon J Husk, Former Chairman, Board of Governors, Shriners Hospital ® –Chicago
Don and LaDonna Crenshaw
were living a happy life. Their
daughter, Karen, was 2 years
old and the family was about to expand.
They were elated to learn twin boys
were on the way. Since twins occur
about 33 times out of 1,000 births, twins
are special. However, the birth of twins
can present special problems.
The Crenshaw twins were dizygotic,
meaning there were two placentas. This
was not known early in the pregnancy.
One baby, eventually named Noah, was
in a placenta which developed a slow
leak of the amniotic fluid surrounding
and protecting the baby. LaDonna was
placed in a hospital for a week of monitoring.
Steroid injections were administered
to help the babies’ lungs develop.
After a couple of days, it was discovered
the other baby, later named Nicholas, had
moved to a position below Noah and
had stopped the leak. Doctors said they
had never seen this happen. Although
LaDonna had displayed no symptoms, a
blood test showed she had serious toxemia.
An emergency Caesarian section
was necessary to avoid the risk of losing
all three lives. Had LaDonna not been in
the hospital, the outcome could have been disastrous.
The boys were delivered February 22, 1999, at only 28
weeks gestation. Of the babies born that early, about 90
percent survive. Nick weighed 2 pounds, 5 ounces and
Noah was 1 pound, 15 ounces. Noah was very small, but
quite healthy. He responded well to the usual treatment. The
heads of both babies were X-rayed and no problems were
evident in Noah’s X-ray. The results for Nick indicated a grade
four hemorrhage (the most severe). He was diagnosed with
cerebral palsy. The parents asked for a prognosis, and the
doctors said, “We don’t know. Some children displaying this
severity cannot walk or talk and have learning disabilities.”
LaDonna was not allowed to see the babies for three
weeks due to the high blood pressure that required bed rest.
She says, “They were so tiny. Don’s wedding ring went all the
way to their shoulder. They had to stay in
the hospital until their original due date
or until they could thrive on their own. I
made daily trips as soon as I was allowed
to go in. I would stay until about 2 p.m.,
then Don and Karen would go in and
stay until closing time. We did this every
day for two months. Nick came home
on April 24, 1999, and weighed a little
more than 4 pounds. Noah had to stay
a couple of extra days because he had
hernia surgery.”
The parents were sick with worry
and sought help in two local hospitals.
Beginning when he was an infant, Nick
received three weekly sessions of physical
therapy. He was the youngest patient
to receive Botox injections for the spasticity
in the legs. Those treatments were
administered every three to six months, and he received
three or four injections in four to six sites. Nick swallowed a
liquid medication to help relieve the pain of injections. Nick
called it his giggle juice. When he was 4 or 5 years old, Nick
decided he would receive the injections without the giggle
juice. He has great strength and determination, and never
complains about medical procedures. Eventually, Botox was
discontinued because it seemed to have lost its effectiveness,
and insurance would not cover the staggering cost.
LaDonna told us, “When Nick was in first grade, he had
his first tendon lengthening and had his ankles turned in and
held in place with plates with screws. The doctor said after
the pain wore off, he could do anything he wanted. Wearing
legs casts, he went outside to swing. He came back in after
a while and said his legs hurt. I asked what he had done and
4 THE MURAT MAGAZINE

he said he had jumped out of the swing.
I told him he shouldn’t have done that
and he said, ‘The doctor told me I could
do anything I wanted.’ ”
Nick saw a doctor at a second hospital
for checkups. The doctor told Nick’s
parents she had been a doctor in Minnesota
and had referred several patients
to a Shriners Hospital. She asked if the
family would be interested in seeking
care at the Shriners Hospital in Chicago.
Nick has been a patient at our Chicago
hospital for five years.
LaDonna says, “Four years ago, Nick
had more tendon lengthening. After
bones were cut, the hip was rotated
to the proper location and secured by
screws. In the near future, the screws
will be removed and the gastrocnemius
muscle will be lengthened. We have been
told they used to call these procedures
birthday surgeries. As kids grow, their
muscles tighten, and tendons are lengthened
so they don’t walk on their toes.
After he had surgery at Shriners, they
used a robot that showed him how his
gait (walk) should be. This was so amazing,
and Nick got a big kick out of it.” The
robot LaDonna mentioned is a Lokomat,
a computer-operated treadmill that
suspends a child’s weight in a harness.
A computer program helps the child
experience walking in a suspended state,
giving him the sensation of proper walking.
Our Chicago hospital acquired one
of the first pediatric Lokomat devices in the United States
through the generosity of a donor and the diligent efforts of
our director of development, Robert Cotner.
LaDonna continues, “All members of the Shriners Hospital
staff are great. When Nick was there for a few days, there
was always something going on that he could participate
in. He enjoyed the magic show and cooking jambalaya. All
of the van drivers have been wonderful. They include Nick
in their conversations and that makes him feel important. I
would say Don Schildgen is probably his
favorite if I had to pick one, because Don
loves hot and spicy food and so does
Nick—the hotter the better. His cerebral
palsy has not affected anything but his
balance while walking. He tests above
average on his I-Step and NWEA tests in
school. His true love would be to play
as a quarterback in the NFL. His favorite
quarterback is Tom Brady of the New
England Patriots.”
Nick’s most recent appointment
happened to be the day of Board of
Governors meetings, and we had a brief
talk. Nick is a delight. He is intelligent
and humorous. He and his father gave
some details about his Shriners Hospital
experiences. Don said, “We expected the
worst when the boys were born and
we were told about Nick’s problems. We
have found the best at Shriners Hospital.
They give wonderful care and they are
not at all like other hospitals. When other
hospitals feel the need to make more
money, they seem to find new charges
to tack on. We were told by one hospital
there was a fee for the discharge room,
when Nick had already been discharged
and he was taken to the discharge room
as a formality. We received a big bill for
passing through that room. We love Shriners
Hospitals. They are the best, and we
could never thank you enough for everything
you have done for Nick. Our boys
are healthy, and our life is great again.”
Dramatic Cast
PAST: One of our own, a unique
individual, was given the distinct
honor of “Shriner of the Year” by Past
Potentate Charlie Crabtree. He is the
one and only—Terry Sanders, codirector
of the Murat Cast. Congratulations,
Terry.
The Cast celebrated its annual
Brass Hat Party on Wednesday evening,
February 13, 2013, with the honoree
being the aforementioned Illustrious
Sir James N. Priest. All attendees
enjoyed a great time, a great meal, and
great fellowship … a typical evening
where the Cast is concerned.
FUTURE: We will be having our annual
Sweethearts Dinner/Meeting on
Wednesday, March 13, at Iaria’s Italian
Restaurant in downtown Indianapolis
where members will honor their
significant others with attention,
flowers, and a sumptuous meal. Stay
tuned for further details as they occur
for this and other upcoming events.
The Cast will again participate
in this year’s Shrine Circus. The cast
of characters will be very much the
same as they man the doors. One
major change is the venue. Instead of
the Fairgrounds Pepsi Coliseum, this
year the circus will take place in the
Champions Pavilion. So, if you go to
the usual place and notice a lack of
attendance, you now know why—
you traveled too far west.
Performances of the Shrine Circus
will occur as follows: Thursday, April
11 (10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. – Opening
Night); Friday, April 12 (10 a.m.
and 7 p.m. – Police and Fire Night);
Saturday, April 13 (10 a.m., 2 p.m., and
7 p.m.); Sunday, April 14 (11:30 a.m.
and 3:30 p.m.). Last year, about 7,000
children came through the doors
of the Pepsi Coliseum. This year, we
expect more. We would appreciate
your attendance and participation.
Raffle: by selling a book of 10 tickets, you receive a FREE
salesman’s ticket for additional chances to win cash and
prizes. Remember, you can sell tickets to ANYONE over
18 years of age—family, friends, neighbors, co-workers &
they will be notified and receive their certificate to redeem
their prize by mail. Tickets are available by contacting
The success of this event relies on volunteers, from
working the registration table, setting up table and chairs,
computer/IT, preparing and serving food and beverages,
and cleanup after the event. Please contact the Fraternal
Office if you would like to assist.
Remember, you can’t win if you don’t have a ticket!
Veteran Car Club
Christopher K. Bottorff
Greetings Nobles,
The Veteran Car Club is a family orientated group who
forward the ideals and goals of the Murat Shrine. Our ladies
are invited to our meetings. Ladies, children and guests are
welcome on road trips.
We will be going on
at least one car tour each
month of this year. Some
of the trips last only one
day, and we also plan
overnight trips and do
activities such as parades,
picnics, plays and other
social events. Ownership of an old car is not necessary to
join our group or attend any of our functions. You would
be welcome to ride with any member who has room or
you can drive a newer car on trips.
You are always welcome to visit us at our meetings,
which are held the second Monday night of the month at
7 p.m. at the Murat Shrine. We meet in the Oasis Lounge
prior to the meeting for dinner and small talk. Visit our
ladies and us and decide if this is the group you would like
to be a part of. Es Selamu Aleikum.
Firemen’s Club
Harry A. Morris
Greetings Nobles!
On January 16, 2013,
we lost a member of our
Firemen’s Club, William
Gray Earle. Bill was
awarded the Meritorious
Service Award Valley of
Indianapolis Scottish Rite.
He was retired from the
Indianapolis Fire Department
as chief of the
Arson Division. He was a very devoted member of the fraternity
and will be greatly missed. Our hearts and prayers
go out to his family.
It was good to see everyone having fun dining and dancing
at the Potentate’s Ball. The Firemen’s Club was well represented.
This is always a great night to enjoy time together
with our ladies and nobles.
We hope everyone had a relaxing time at the Florida
visitation. The Indiana weather has not been that bad and
spring is just around the corner. The circus is next month
and we hope you have bought your tickets.
Take care, nobles.
Flying Fezzes
Patrick DeCallier
The first item on the agenda at our meeting was
comments from members on how well the Lutherwood
Orphanage “Christmas for the Kids” went. The
participants were very pleased. In addition, William
Lambing, our secretary, read a very nice letter from the
director of the orphanage, praising the Flying Fezzes for
how the event was handled.
There was some discussion about parade events and
Dave Beaman, our parade marshal, discussed organizing
six parade events for the year. The members agreed and
plans will be finalized shortly.
After that, the treasurer’s report was read and the
meeting was closed.
There are many different family
events we have throughout the year.
Everyone is welcome. Please do not
forget our normal Friday Night dinners.
In April, we will start our Prime
Rib Nights back up. We have prime rib
every first Friday night of the month.
It’s the best in town!
Please do not forget that when you
visit the Johnson County Shrine Club,
there is a good chance you will be
hosted by Barry Cook (Past Potentate)
and his sidekick, Ronald Bailey. They are
always there at the Club to put a smile
on your face and to make you laugh.
On a serious note, we are still searching
for our 2013 president, Donald
“The Duck” Borski! He is still missing in
action. We would issue a “Silver Alert” although
he is bald! Nope, “The Duck” is
still in Alabama soaking up the sun! He
returns in April so be sure to come on
down to Johnson County to welcome
him back!
Chanters
Phil Thrasher
Congratulations to the new officers of the Murat Chanters for 2013: Ed Adams,
President; Doug Fegenbush, First Vice President; Rush Daughette, Second
Vice President; Tim Jennings, Assistant Secretary-Treasurer; Gary Cleveland,
Treasurer; and Dick Abdon, Secretary. Thanks, also, to Mark Stansbury for his
leadership as our president in 2012, including the trip to Imperial in Charlotte
and many more activities.
This year promises to be special for the Chanters as we are hosting the
Shrine Chanters Association International singing competition at Murat temple
at 2 p.m. on July 2 followed by the first ever Chanter Cabaret at 6 p.m., featuring
various entertaining acts from the Murat Chanters and from Chanter Units
all over the country. This is open to the public if you are interested in having
a good time while enjoying the great food and surroundings of your Murat
Shrine Club in Indianapolis. No tickets are required.
Also, during the Imperial Council Session, June 30 – July 4, 2013, the Chanters
will be the featured act for the Imperial Sir’s Pageant, Wednesday, July 3, at
the Convention Center. This is also open to the public. The Chanter Quartet
will be singing the national anthem at the public opening on Sunday afternoon,
and it is likely that the full chorus of Chanters will also be performing at
the Imperial Church Service at Roberts Park on June 30 at 1 p.m.
To accommodate these requests, we are adding some new songs and lengthening
our rehearsals to two hours, commencing at 7 p.m. most Mondays in the
Corinthian Room. If you would like to be a part of the Imperial Council Session
and can carry a tune, this is your opportunity to join one of the oldest and
most prestigious Units in Murat. Just come down next Monday or call or e-mail
me for our schedule. We look forward to adding your voice to ours.
Prior to performing for the Imperial Council, the Chanters will be involved
in many other activities, including performing at Methodist Hospital for a
church service, the Murat Memorial Service for our recently departed nobles,
and various other venues. For instance, the Quartet recently performed for the
USO volunteers at Camp Atterbury, and the Chanters are anxious to continue
that relationship with the USO to provide some entertainment for our active
duty, Reserves, and National Guard troops. Any contacts you might have would
be appreciated.
As many of you know, we are concentrating on being the best entertainers
we can be. If you saw our 2012 Men’s Show, you know what we mean. Our
entertainment side will be on full display at the Chanter Cabaret on July 2, and
we would appreciate the opportunity to show that side to your group or to
the general public at every opportunity. Good venues for us include Masonic/
York Rite/Shrine-related groups, church social groups, assisted living facilities,
celebration banquets, and parties.
As with any fraternal organization, we have a constant need for new members
to fill the shoes of our veteran members. Our door is always open to you
or someone you know. Between the social events and the entertaining, you
will find the Chanters a rewarding experience. If you, or someone you would
recommend, are interested, please call Phil Thrasher at 407-3650 for information
or just drop in and get acquainted. You will be glad you did.
stadiums around the world, the home
of the Indianapolis Colts was selected
the “best” in all sports. What is it that
makes our stadium so special? To be
tops on this list we have it all: great
fans, game day atmosphere, food and
drink selection inside the stadium,
set in an interesting and vibrant
neighborhood with a good return on
all visitors from other NFL teams. Lucas
Queen Cindy, we are sure your
Hello Nobles,
Officers for the Unit have been installed
and are ready for a great year.
They are as follows: Dan Ouimette,
President; Doug Godme, First Vice
President; Mike Pfeiffer, Second Vice
President; Chris Robbins, Third Vice
President; Herb Green, Secretary; and
Bob Bailey, Treasurer.
A fun time was had by all at the
Potentate’s Ball. Some upcoming
campouts will be our Shakedown
campout at Timberline campground
in Anderson as we come out of hibernation. We
are also looking forward
to our annual campout in Terre Haute
hosted by Zorah Shriners. We are having
a new adventure called a Round
Robin in which we will be cruising to
three different cities—St. Louis, MO;
Memphis, TN; and Nashville, TN—
from May 31 to June 15. You can do
the whole cruise or meet us at one of
the destinations. This promises to be
a great trip with many attractions. We
want to invite all who enjoy fellowship
and camping; whether you have
a motor home or a tent, come join us
Don Dawson
Mates, we could use some volunteers during the Imperial Session in many
areas.
We have agreed to assist the International Association of Shrine Yacht Clubs
with their hospitality suite, and we will need volunteers to assist with the bar.
We also need volunteers to assist with the pirate ship which will be used to
haul the officers of the IASYC in the Imperial Parade. This is not a great deal of
work and if we can enlist the help of 20 or so, it would be much appreciated.
Please call me at (317) 475-0530 and we will assign you a time you can attend.
Dues are due and overdue. Please send your dues to our hard-working
secretary-treasurer, Ted Stewart, as soon as possible as we cannot keep you on
our rolls without the payment of dues. Dues were increased to $20 per year
and should be sent to Ted Stewart, 8009 Tanager Ln., Indianapolis, IN 46256.
Call Ted at (317) 842-9686 if you have any problems.
If you have not purchased your white uniform shirt, please do so right away.
July will be here before you know it and because these shirts are tailor-made,
they cannot be shipped to you overnight. Our Club’s official gear provider,
Joyce Puterbaugh, can be contacted at (317) 329-0561. All of the shirts, hats,
sweaters, coats and uniform shirts can be seen on the Yacht Club Web site.
Simply go to www.muratshrine.org and click on “Clubs and Units.” Then click
on “Yacht Club.” Examine the merchandise, download the order form, and send
it to Joyce with your remittance. Don’t look like a common galley slave at the
Shrine Imperial Convention! Look sharp with your white uniform shirt, white
shorts, and white tennis shoes and socks.
Our Club meets on the third Thursday of each month at the Shrine temple
Oasis. In addition, we have a weekly luncheon each Friday at noon at the Kennington
American Legion Post at 6440 Westfield Blvd. in Broad Ripple. These
luncheons are fun affairs and you are welcome to bring any friend you would
like. We use this as a recruiting tool and if you have a friend who may be interested
in Freemasonry or the Shrine, please feel free to bring him.
As most of you are aware, the Black Camel has claimed the Yacht Club’s old
friend, Sam Thompson. Sam was a member of a great many Masonic organizations,
but he usually found the time to meet with us at our Friday luncheons.
He will be greatly missed. Our heartfelt condolences go to his lovely wife, Fran,
and to his family.
Until next month, we wish you fair winds and following seas!
Chris Robbins
for fun. For more information, please
give President Dan Ouimette a call at
See you out there.
Police Club
March Madness is upon us and
spring is just around the corner. One
more winter behind us but remember
… in like a lion, out like a lamb or
however that goes.
Those of you who made the Potentate’s
Ball—wow, a good time was had
by all. Illustrious Sir Jim Priest went
all out for his coming out party. Thank
you, Sir, we had a great time and our
Drill Team was honored to escort you
and yours to the Ball.
With the coming of spring, we
have to start thinking Circus, Circus,
Circus! We need all hands to sell
circus ads, and we will need plenty
of assistance to provide safety and
security for our children at the circus.
Please plan to volunteer April 11–14.
The parade season is about to
begin and Drill Team Commander and
Police Club President Bill Pike is looking
for riders. Bill would prefer riders
who are able to stay upright on their
Harleys the majority of the parade.
Should that be an issue, please contact
Tom Bond and he will loan you
his Huffy bicycle. Interested? Contact
Bill Pike at (317) 498-4320 or Grant
Mumford at (765) 744-1837.
On a note of sadness, we lost a
great member and supporter of the
Police Club earlier this year. He also
served as Police Club chaplain for
many a president. Sam Thompson will
be missed by all; please keep Sam’s
family in your thoughts.
Please take the time to read the
magazine cover to cover. The changes
made by Mike Moxley and team really
make the magazine POP. If I don’t see
you before, I will see you on the first
Tuesday.
Johnson County
Mini-Mystics
Duane Burgess
Hello, Fellow Nobles and Ladies!
Well, the parade season is getting
closer and we are starting to get
our “Little Hot Rods” warmed up.
We have a few people wondering if
they should join the Johnson County
Mini-Mystics! I say “yes,” you should
come on down to a meeting and see
what we have to offer. We meet every
fourth Wednesday of the month at
the Johnson County Shrine Club at 7
p.m. Come on out and meet some of
the drivers: President Lee Langlotz,
Ray Miller, Mike Pearcy, Bob Torrance,
Randy Bell, Don Borski, and Bob Rash
the “Golf Cart Man.” These are just a
few of the drivers who attend the
monthly meetings on a regular basis.
We would love to have some new
faces turn up and give one of the
“Little Hot Rods” a test drive.
The Johnson County Mini-Mystics
compete every year for the “Most
Paraded Unit,” although it isn’t a walk
in the park with all of the other Units
who turn out for several parades
throughout the year. We might even
be fortunate enough to get our 102nd
Potentate, James N. Priest, behind the
wheel in 2013!
I will leave everyone with this funny
joke: When I was a teenager, nobody
had cell phones yet; everything
was landline. I have a friend who
would call to talk about whatever, but
he would usually ask first, “Where are
you?” I would reply, “Dude, you called
my house. I’m probably at home.”
Thanks and be safe!
Rolling Hills Shrine Club
Band
Raymond G. Hauser, Jr.
It is March already and the Murat Band has already been “marching” through
2013.
Our first performance was for the
Grand Lodge on Saturday, January 12.
Thanks to our Murat Brass Ensemble
who performed for the Founder’s Day
Program. Gary Sparks, Tim Decker,
Don Croshaw, Bob Murray, Ray Hauser,
Sam Hiatt, Tom Price, Jack Brown, Rich
Blocker, and Mike McLaughlin did an
outstanding job.
The entire Murat Band performed
at Kresge Chapel on January 23. We
entertained the residents, families and
friends. Kresge Chapel is part of the Indiana
Masonic Home in Franklin, IN. We
also performed at the Indiana Masonic
Home in the Administration Building on
Duane Graham
Greetings Nobles,
As you read this article, spring is looming and cabin fever is at its highest
point of the season— hold on, you will make it.
I hope you have all bought your circus tickets as this is a crucial fundraiser
for the fraternity and worthy of our support. RHSC has always been a great
supporter of the circus; please continue the great tradition.
At the January meeting, RHSC was pleased to welcome several members
of the Divan with our Illustrious Potentate who proceeded to swear in the officers
for 2013. We thank them and congratulate the Divan members on being
our elected leaders for 2013.
Again, RHSC members, come out and support the Club.
Richard Blocker and Flat Chuck at
the Murat Band’s Kresge Chapel
concert January 23, 2013.
February 27. Both concerts were well
received by our audiences.
This month, we will perform at
Greenwood Village Retirement Home
on March 27 with a 6:30 p.m. downbeat.
We invite you and yours to join us for our concert. Contact me (Ray
Hauser) at raymondhauser@att.net or (317) 370-2213 and I will forward the
details. Hope to see you there.
Our Murat Band President’s Party honoring our Potentate, Jim Priest, is
scheduled for April 6. Please mark your calendar and we hope you can attend
for a great time. Please contact our President’s Party chairman and Second
Vice President Bob Murray at (317) 445-7233 or murrayr@embarqmail.com for
answers and reservations.
The Imperial Session is in Indianapolis, July 2013. We need a head count of
who plans to ride with us on the trailer. Please contact Ray ASAP if you wish
to ride instead of walk. Let’s have a full trailer. More opportunities for involvement
will be forthcoming.
Our Murat Band was organized in 1896 and still continues to grow. We
rehearse most Wednesday evenings and perform at least once a month. Please
join us! And the band plays on …
Mobil Nobles
Nobles, it is with a heavy heart I
must report that Noble Sam Thompson
passed away on January 19, 2013.
It is incredible how many lives he
touched by mentoring men in the
fraternity and its appendant bodies.
Sam introduced me to Masonry and
put me to work at the State Fair food
booth and the Mobil Nobles spaghetti
supper before I even took my obligation!
He meant a great deal to me and
countless others and will be missed
by everyone who knew him. Please
remember to keep his family in your
prayers. Well, Scott Schuster is now
officially welcomed and on his way to
serving in the Divan line, having been
properly introduced at the Little Pig
ceremonial, which was well attended.
A great time was had by the men
downstairs and the ladies upstairs for
Ladies Little Pig, and then all parties
mingled upstairs for a wonderful ending
to a great evening.
Now on to the circus planning
HighRollers
and all the events that go with that
great weekend. As promised, here are
some pictures of our installation from
January. Thanks to Past Potentate John
Friend for installing the officers and
past President Curt Jessup for serving
Clowns
Craig Stevenson
as emcee. It was a special night.
Remember that the Mobil Nobles
meet the second Friday night of every
month with social starting around 6
p.m. and the meeting at 7:30 p.m.
We are everywhere.
We are coming into spring and your clown Unit is in full swing, preparing
for a very busy year. We are practicing weekly for the circus and the props
have been painted and repaired if needed. Two very capable clowns are in
charge of the circus this year, Paulie and Doodles. The skits were painstakingly
chosen and after many hours of deliberation, we finally threw the list in a hat
and drew out two. Since the circus is in April this year, it gives us more time
to practice so we may actually get the skits right this time—you all need to
attend to see.
We are also gearing up for Great Lakes Shrine Clowns coming to Indy in
April. The dates are the 18th, 19th and 20th if you want to see your clowns in
competition. It will be held at the Clarion Hotel located at 2930 Waterfront
Parkway on the west side of Indy.
We are going to have our honorary clown degree again this year in June—
more to come on that later. Then at the end of June, we have the Imperial
Session and all your clowns and many more will be here. Come out and see us
in action.
We have our 1925 Ford running and ready for the 2013 parade season and
have signed up for some parades, but we can do more. Let me know if you
would like us to come to one.
We are always looking for a few good men to be clowns. We meet on the
second and fourth Wednesdays; come and see what we are about and we will
buy you a Zem-Zem. My number is (317) 716-0676 if you have any questions.
Let me leave you with this thought: it takes 17 muscles to smile and 43 to
frown, so keep smiling.
Bob Hudson
What a great year 2012 was for
Texas Hold’em at Murat. If you missed
the January Stated Meeting, the
HighRollers presented Ill. Sir James
Priest the gross revenues check from
2012 of more than $31,000 raised for
Murat temple from Texas Hold’em
Tournaments.
We would like to thank all of the
nobles who assisted the temple in
the past year. If it were not for those
dedicated volunteers, we would not
have been as successful.
Now is the time to step it up to
the next level for Texas Hold’em.
Anyone can come to help, play, or just
watch. Ninety-five percent of the players
who attend a Texas Hold’em Tournament
are non-Shriners. This means
the money we raise every month is
coming from the local community.
Our player database has grown to
more than 600 players. This means
our attendance is growing rapidly.
The last thing we want to see is our
inability to facilitate the tournament
in accordance with the State Gaming
Commission rules and regulations.
If you or your Unit would like to
learn how to work at a Texas Hold’em
Tournament, all you have to do is
show up. We start preparing for the
tournament at 4 p.m. We would
welcome anyone who would like to
learn registration, the cash room, how
to deal, security, or run the floor. It’s
really a lot of fun and not that difficult
to do.
Our monthly tournament runs
the second Saturday of each month.
Registration begins at 5 p.m. with the
tournament beginning at 6 p.m. We
look forward to seeing you there!
Reception Unit
Greetings from Murat Reception.
It’s been a fantastic start for 2013
and we have been busy serving the
Murat nobility at the temple. We were
excited at the turnout for the Leadership
Seminar—thank you to all the
members who attended and worked
that event.
Wasn’t it an impressive sight with
all those smiling faces, warm greetings,
and brown jackets at the January
Patrol
and February Stated Meetings? As
the tylers for the temple, the Murat
Reception Unit takes pride in assisting
the nobility into the temple and
assisting the Potentate and Divan for
the Stated Meeting.
It was then time for us to put on
our formal tux uniform and greet
Illustrious Sir James Priest, our Murat
Potentate, and his lady Tammy, along
with the entire Divan in the Grand
Kevin J. Scott
It’s March, which means that we are almost to spring. It also means we have
already had some fun and fellowship during our February events, and we have
some great ones to look forward to attending this month. Outside of the Murat
Shrine, February had Super Bowl XLVII on the 3rd, the start of Mardi Gras on
the 12th (I love Fat Tuesday), and the start of NASCAR racing season on the
24th at Daytona, FL, with the Daytona 500. Inside the Murat Shrine, the Florida
Visitation trip was February 5–9; all who attended that event had a great time
having fellowship with their fellow Shriners, led by our Potentate and 3-peat
past president of the Murat Patrol Unit, Jim Priest. We also had a great party
with the Reverse Raffle Customer Appreciation and Band Night to start off the
year on February 2. PARTY WITH THE PATROL AND PRAISE A PRIEST! It was
also to celebrate Groundhog Day and honor the Pride of Patrol, Potentate Jim
Priest.
Also in February, many of the Unit members had a great time at the Little
Pig/Band Night on the 15th and the Murat Shrine Potentate’s Ball on the 23rd.
In March, we have the Murat Shrine St. Patrick’s Day “Bar Crawl” scheduled for
the weekend of March 17, organized by the Murat Shrine membership committee,
with details forthcoming from them via the Murat Shrine office e-mails
and flyers. And March Madness begins on the 19th through April 8. Speaking of
April, the Murat Shrine Circus will be April 11–14, and the Patrol Unit members
will be participating again this year in the Parade of Units and providing
helping hands for other circus activities. Be on the lookout for further details
on the Unit related circus events via e-mail and the Unit Stated Meeting.
Also in April, the next Patrol Reverse Raffle will be on the 20th at the Murat
Shrine. We started selling tickets for the Reverse Raffle at the February 2 party
mentioned above. Make sure you get your tickets and have your friends purchase
them from you so we can have a large turnout for this April event.
A reminder: the monthly Patrol Stated Meetings are the third Tuesday of
each month in the Patrol Room in the basement of the Murat Shrine at 7 p.m.
All members are welcome to come and enjoy fellowship and fun with your
current friends and meet some new ones. Also, if you know of anyone who
would like to or should be a Patrol member, bring them to the meetings so
they can meet us and we can meet them and get them signed up. Dues notices
were sent out; if you have not already received them in the mail, please contact
one of Patrol Unit officers. Be sure to pay your dues since we use those
funds to pay for Patrol events and other necessary Unit expenses to make it
fun for all.
Bob Hudson
Hall for the Potentate’s Ball. It was an
impressive event and the Reception
Unit thanks all of those who assisted
in making this evening very special
for Murat temple.
With 2013 moving along at a fast
pace, it’s time to get ready for the
Murat Shrine Circus in April. We will
need everyone’s assistance in ushering
for our circus. As we all know, this
year’s circus will be in a new building
at the Indiana State Fairgrounds. We
can use all the help anyone is willing
to give to assist the circus guests in
having a great and safe time.
It seems there is no rest for us
as we then need to prepare for the
Murat Sportsman Raffle in May. This is
a new event for Murat and Reception,
and we are looking forward to again
greeting and receiving these sportsmen
into the temple for this great
fundraiser for Murat.
Again this year, Murat Reception
will be having its Mike’s Car Wash
sale. Please support the Unit by
purchasing these car wash coupons.
They make great gifts that can be
given to anyone … with four wheels,
that is.
Last but not least, it’s never too
early to put time aside in your
calendar for the upcoming Imperial
Session here in Indy. Reception
is honored to have a Unit member,
past president and Past Potentate of
Murat as our next Imperial Sir. Again,
Reception will answer the call to assist
Murat in hosting what looks like a
great Imperial Session.
We thank you for the opportunity
to serve all of you!
See all of you at the door!
MARCH 2013 17

Murat Shriners Business Connection
Chris Kinsey
A new year has arrived and we are looking to move our Unit forward along
with the Murat Shrine. Our officers were installed in January and our president,
Randy Nail, unveiled his 2013 agenda. Special thanks to Illustrious Sir Jim Priest
and the rest of the Divan for their attendance.
Our Unit will return to its networking roots, emphasizing our theme: “Building
Relationships Through Networking.” We are going to emphasize connections
and business opportunities within and outside of our Shriner brethren. At
the heart of our efforts will be a drive to develop new members and reconnect
with former members of MSBC. (You know who you are!) We are striving to
move our temple into an upward trend membership wise. Most of us believe
we can accomplish this by providing positive exposure to Murat Shrine—moving
our temple (and Shriners) into the community conversation through our
business contacts and networking.
We have a series of “Meet and Greets” slated with a special speaker presentation
from someone noteworthy in Murat and/or the community. This is an
excellent chance to connect with one another and engage with leaders among
us. Jeff Zaring, past Indiana Grand Master, was one of our first guests this quarter,
and it was a delight to have him speak at our February meeting. Special
thanks to Jeff for speaking to our group, and we appreciate what a great Mason
he is.
Other events we have planned are a bus trip to the Chicago Shriners
Hospital and a family bike ride on June 8 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Member or not, we would love to have you join us!
In years past, we have awarded numerous $1,000 scholarships to deserving
recipients who were former patients of Shriners Hospitals. In 2012, we are
proud to say our group gave out 10 scholarships! Special thanks to past MSBC
President Don Richards for coordinating this effort. In 2013, so far we have
three (and possibly more) scholarships to award. We are hoping to award additional
scholarships and this will depend on our donations and/or fundraising
activities.
Our scholarships will now be coordinated through our committee, the
Scholarship Award Program (SAP). This MSBC committee will be coordinating
all activities related to the SAP. We moved our scholarship business into committee
to reserve our meetings for business networking. This committee will
report to the Unit at our Stated Meetings.
Our dues have been reduced to $30/year (no mandatory auction/dinner
tickets). Our members have an option of advertising in a reserved section of
Murat Magazine for $15/month; non-members may also advertise for $20/
month. Meetings will be reserved for networking and “business connections.”
Other business such as scholarships, social events, etc. will be conducted in
our committee and board meetings.
Our Unit meets the fourth Tuesday each month in the Murat Oasis, Room B,
at 6:30 p.m. for social time, and our formal meeting begins at 7 p.m. Attendees
have the option of ordering dinner beforehand and dining during our meeting.
If you have any questions, please call Randy Nail at (317) 507-3863 or e-mail
him at Rnail@muratmsbc.org.
Golf Calendar
Randall West
The season is about to begin, the
driving range will be open, and we
will line up to try and shake off that
winter rust. That’s a great plan for
March, but I never understood how
the winter rust hangs on until August!
Golf chairmen, let’s get your info
turned in so we may place your outing
on the calendar. Remember, we
need Date, Time, Location (directions
to course if applicable), Golf Format,
Cost, Contact Person and Contact
Info, and any additional details such
as Zem-Zem, Lunch/Dinner, etc.
Please send your information to
Potentate James Priest at potentate@
muratshrine.org and myself, Randall
West, Golf Chairman, at kirbygolfer@
gmail.com.
We have heard from a few Shrine
Clubs and these outings have been
approved by Illustrious Sir Jim Priest.
May 9—Shelby County Shrine
Club at Bear Chase Golf Course in
Shelbyville. Additional details to follow
per Bill Rasner.
June 20—Madison County Shrine
Club, 11 a.m. at Meadowbrook Golf
Course. Additional details to follow
per Bill McCarty.
July 12—Montgomery County
Shrine Club at Rocky Ridge Golf
Course in Darlington. Details to follow
per Greg Miller.
In addition, the Potentate’s Golf
Outing honoring James N. Priest
will be September 9 at Maple Creek
Country Club.
We have also scheduled a golf
outing for June 7 during the Brown
County Festival and, of course, the
Great Lakes Shrine Association golf
outing set for September 11 in Cincinnati.
One last thought: Hazards attract,
Fairways repel!
If I don’t see you before, I’ll see
you on the first tee.
ATTENTION: The US dept of energy( DOE) has ruled that 80
percent efficient furnaces will be against the law to install in homes
in numerous northern and Midwestern states including Indiana as
of May 1, 2013. This can become very expensive to the homeowner
who has construction obstacles that would make it difficult to
install a 90 percent flue pipe system. The reason for this action by
the government is fairly obvious, but there is still time to evaluate
the impact this would have to your home and finances.
I WANT TO BE YOUR HEATING

CIRCUS
Time flies when you
are having fun!
Bill Rasner, Circus Director
If you haven’t worked with this year’s
circus committee, you have really
missed out on a lot of fun! We have
held several meetings in preparation for
the “greatest circus on earth” and it is
going to show! As the Divan and I have
traveled throughout the state of Indiana
promoting the circus this year, we have
answered many questions.
The most asked question is where is
the circus being held this year since
the Coliseum is being remodeled?
The answer: it is still being held at the
Indiana State Fairgrounds, but in the Champions Pavilion,
one building to the east of the Coliseum.
Where should I park?
Parking will not change from past years. The State
Fairgrounds will be providing the staff to direct you to the
available parking areas.
Do we need help with Ride Ticket Sales or
Novelty Sales?
YES … Ride Ticket Sales are very important to the
profits of the circus and to the enjoyment of those in
attendance. We will need more volunteers than in past
years, as we will be selling from both the ticket booths
and from each ride this year. Also, you and your Club or
Unit can volunteer to operate a Novelty Booth for one or
more shows. DeMolay and Jobs Daughters will be assisting
again this year by selling novelties in the seating areas.
How do I find out information about this year’s
circus?
GREAT QUESTION!!! We have a Web site specifically
for the circus. Go to: muratshrinecircus.com; you can
find out show times and dates, get information on how
to become an advertiser in the Activity Book or become
a Corporate Sponsor, and, most importantly, anyone can
purchase tickets to all performances 24 hours a day!!!
How do I volunteer to work at the circus?
Show up and have fun! We will no longer be using the
old Eddy’s Building across from the Coliseum, so you will
need to enter the Champions Pavilion (north side); the
ticket box office will be on the right and the
volunteer registration on the left. Contact the
Fraternal Office if you have any questions.
What should I wear if I am working as a
volunteer during one of the circus performances?
A Shrine shirt and/or jacket for ALL, and, of
course, the Fez is required to be worn by the
nobles! It is important that all patrons in attendance
know who the workers are in case they
need assistance.
How do I qualify for the Ringmaster’s
Banquet?
Register as a volunteer and work four of the nine
shows and you will qualify to attend the complimentary
banquet in May. If you work less than the required number
of shows or wish to bring a guest or spouse who did
not work, there will be a cost of $25, payable in advance,
when making the reservation in the Fraternal Office.
I hope this article helps to answer questions you might
have had about the circus. If you need any additional
information, contact the Fraternal Office or check out the
Web site at: muratshrinecircus.com
See you at the circus!!!
Corvette Club
Greetings Nobles from the Corvette
Club!
It is with pleasure I relay to our
members that the Corvette Club was
well represented by our president,
Bruce Smith, and his corps of officers
and several of our members at the
21st Annual Leadership Seminar held
on January 26, 2013.
Smyrna Shrine Guild
Our Illustrious Potentate, James
Priest, brought everyone present up
to speed with a very busy and exciting
calendar of events for 2013. By
the time you read this, we will have
enjoyed the Potentate’s Ball and be
looking forward to the circus April
11–14, the Sportsman Raffle in May,
the Brown County Summer Festival
Linda Abdon
Hello to everyone and I hope spring will be here soon! My daffodils are
already coming up through the snow, and then the sun shines and the snow
disappears! Isn’t living in Indiana weather exciting?
We had our first Guild Night in February and the pound auction was a lot
of fun. It is amazing what wonderful things weigh only 1 pound! I’m looking
forward to more fundraising opportunities this year.
I hope everyone enjoyed the Potentate’s Ball. I know Potentate Jim and
Lady Tammy were happy to see so many people having a good time. Sally Jo
Elliott and husband Ron did a great job of chairing the event. The decorations
for Moondance were beautifully done by Candy Close and her committee. So
congratulations to Sally Jo and Candy and all the Smyrna ladies who helped for
a job well done!
With spring on the way, our thoughts turn to flowers. We will be doing
our flower sale once again, and order forms will be available at Guild Night in
March. Delivery will be in May and the flowers were so beautiful last year that
I am already planning where to plant the impatiens and geraniums and where
to hang my baskets.
March Guild Night will just be fun and games. I think I’ll try my hand at
dominoes this year. Those ladies always seem to be having a lot of fun!
Upcoming events will be Membership Night in April and Imperial Visitation
toward the end of the month. The circus is also in April this year, and I know
that takes a lot of volunteers to make it run smoothly. Also, a casino trip is
being planned for Saturday, April 20, so keep that date free! That is always an
exciting trip.
Happy Easter to everyone and remember the Shrine kids and GIVE FROM
YOUR HEART!
June 7–9, and the Imperial Session
starting June 28 with a parade on July
1. Lots of volunteer help will be needed
to ensure these events are successful.
Let’s all step up to support both
our Imperial Sir John Cinotto and
Illustrious Sir James Priest.
We have many Potentates’ “call”
parades on the docket to boot. The
dates and locations will be announced
soon. An event you won’t
want to miss is being planned for
April at the Putnam Park Race Course,
a “Give a Wounded Warrior a Ride”
around the race course. Club members
are encouraged to present your
ideas for new events to President
Bruce Smith before the calendar is
filled up.
We invite all Shriners to check out
our Club, which meets at 7 p.m. the
third Tuesday of each month at Murat
Shrine. Remember, you do not have
to own a Corvette to join our Club
or participate in our activities. Come
join us; we would love to have you.
Ladies’ Oriental Shrine
It is almost time to say “good-bye” to Old Man Winter
and “hello” to the beautiful spring season. This is truly a
time to feel refreshed and renewed as we enjoy the outdoors
with the colorful flowers and green grass appearing.
We should thank God for the many blessings bestowed
upon us!
Tarum Court #14 has had the election of officers for
the ensuing year. I congratulate High Priestess-elect,
Deanna Sue Taylor, and her 2013 officers. I am confident
they will all do a great job with the support of Tarum
Court ladies. Remember: You can only do your best, no
better! The installation of officers will be on March 23 at
11 a.m. in the Arabian Room at Murat Shrine. It is open
to the public so please save this date and come support
these great ladies as “Carol Sue’s Egyptian Ladies” dance
out of the East and make way for “Jan’s Explorers” to take
over new territory!
I have had an AWESOME year as Tarum Court’s High
Priestess. We had several fundraisers to “Brighten a Child’s
Life” and I thank each and every Tarum Court member
and their families who made this possible. These events
included a soup supper, ladies’ luncheon/style show, pizza
Judi Taflinger
making and sales, Santa’s sweet shop selling homemade
cookies and goodies, sale of Discover Indy coupon books
and lastly, a Souper Supper on Super Bowl weekend. I
was proud to represent the members at the installation of
officers at subordinate courts in Indiana and Ohio; Grand
Council in Norfolk, VA; Great Lakes Unit Meet in Toledo,
OH; and recently, the ceremonial of Dendarah Court
#10 in Toledo, OH. Two other highlights of my year were
volunteering at Camp Ytiliba in Cincinnati, OH, and the
Grand Visitation of Lady Carol Sue Roberts, Grand High
Priestess of the Ladies’ Oriental Shrine of North America.
We had three (3) ceremonials welcoming eight (8) new
members. I thank all the members for their assistance and
support to make this year possible and look forward to
the coming years on the sidelines.
Our next meeting will be on March 5 at 6:30 p.m.
Please note the earlier time as we will also have a ceremonial
that evening to welcome two new members, Carol
Austin and Misti Hatcher. Please come join us to support
our wonderful organization and participate in our activities
and friendship!
Please join Potentate Jim Priest and Lady Tammy in Team Murat
Tarum
The holidays are over for another year and it is now time
to get 2013 rolling along. The new year started at Tarum with
two events that happened to coincide. First of all, we had the
installation of officers. This was held on Friday night, January
25. This year, the installation was part of a Friday night dinner
at the Club. The dinner was well attended and all had a good
meal and a great time. This year’s officers were installed by
Murat 2013 Potentate James Priest. He and members of his
Divan and their ladies were Tarum’s guests of honor on this
special evening. Thank you to all who came out this night
and a special thank-you to Illustrious Sir Potentate Priest
and his Lady Tammy for helping 2013 President Robert and
Ladies’ President Barbara kick off their new year at Tarum.
Also, thank you to Master of Ceremonies past President Fred
Morgan for making the night a fun time for all.
The 2012 special awards were also presented. The recipient
of the Shriner of the Year was Mike (Radar) Whalen, and
Lady Shriner of the Year was Donna (Mrs. Radar) Whalen.
They are two of the hardest working members we have. It
was a little different this year in that there were two President’s
Award winners: President Chad Greulich, who does
whatever is asked of him and more, and Roy McClurg who
you both for your service to President Robert and Tarum.
the Club’s work at the Depot Old-Fashioned Christmas Festival
courtesy of Roger Richert. Roger has our Club take the
pictures with Santa and then he donates the profits to Tarum
for presentation to the hospital. Thank you Roger!
The second event that night was a birthday party for
President Robert Whalen. He is now eligible for AARP. Happy
50th, President Robert! This party took place after installation
was complete and, of course, we all enjoyed this special
milestone for Robert. The Potentate and his Divan continued
their evening by celebrating Robert’s birthday with us. All in
all, it was quite a full and fun evening at Tarum. See what you
miss when you don’t come out?
Mark your calendars, set your watch, phone a friend, call
a member for a ride; however you do it, get out to the Club.
Now more than ever, we need you. Membership is shrinking
as is the same everywhere. One of the signs of this is the
increase in dues—not ever a good thing. However, sometimes
it is necessary to keep things going. To avoid this in the
future, we can support our Club, come out to the Club for
dinner, get involved, and most of all, recruit new members.
That is your mission and I truly hope all of you will accept
this charge.
See you at the Club.
500 Club
Rick Solly
On December 5, 2012, at the last Stated Meeting, the
500 Club held election of new officers for 2013. They are
as follows: Bill Davis, President; Dan Price, First Vice President;
Ed Andrews, Second Vice President; Bruce Raymond,
Three-Year Board; Tim Plank, Two-Year Board; Mike Wagner,
Larry DeVoss, and Bud Whitis, One-Year Board members;
Gary Lucas, Chairman of the Board; and Rick Solly, Secretary-Treasurer.
The 500 Club’s yearly awards banquet was held on
Saturday, December 8, at Squealer’s Barbeque. A good time
was had by all. During the banquet, Dan Price presented
the President’s Award plaque to Gary Lucas for his service
as president for 2012. Mike Wagner was awarded the Mr.
500 plaque for his everlasting presence and support at all
our parades. Congratulations to all for a successful year.
This year’s parade car chairman is Mike Wagner. We are
looking forward to a great 2013.
Kentucky Colonels
LEADERSHIP SEMINAR – Several
officers attended the annual
seminar which was very informative.
This event is a good way to receive
instruction on the workings of Murat
and the proper way to conduct our
meetings, etc. A big part of the seminar
was focused on membership.
The membership team had excellent
ideas on bringing in new members
and asked the membership to
bring in 280 or more new members
Transportation Club
this year. They cannot do it alone.
POTENTATE’S BALL – Several
members of the Club attended the
Potentate’s Ball on February 23. The
Colonels had a good table and thoroughly
enjoyed the festivities. Let’s all
support our Potentate, Jim Priest, and
Lady Tammy in their year.
RED BULL MOTORCYCLE RACE
– This marks the fifth year of the
Red Bull Motorcycle Race at the
Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Last
POTENTATE’S BALL – Several members of the Transportation Club attended
the Potentate’s Ball on February 23. This was a good opportunity to show our
support for our new Potentate, Jim Priest, and Lady Tammy. Jim has re-introduced
sandwiches and libations after every Stated Meeting. This is a return to
the past and everyone left with their bellies full.
CIRCUS – As usual, the Club will be out in force at the Murat Shrine Circus
scheduled for April 11–14. We assist the handicapped children and elderly in
several ways and man the novelty booth. Several members also help the Kentucky
Colonels Club in passing out our hospital papers. Try to set aside some
time to help your fellow nobles in this worthwhile endeavor. Please contact
our circus chairman for the work schedule. We definitely need help in passing
out our hospital papers prior to seven performances. The circus will not be in
the coliseum but in a building close by.
BROWN COUNTY SUMMER FESTIVAL – Our Potentate has scheduled a
summer trip to Nashville, IN. There will be several things to do including a
parade. Please pick up a brochure. It’s only an hour away and relatively inexpensive.
ONION SALES – The Club is again considering selling Vidalia onions this
year. We are checking out the details and will have more information soon.
SICK AND DISTRESSED – Elmer Habicht is home and Dale Harris is now
in the Methodist Home. Please keep Elmer and Dale in your thoughts and
prayers.
DRIVERS NEEDED – If you want to be a part of the hospital experience,
please sign up to drive. Talk to a driver and he will tell you what a great experience
this is. You get to know the patients personally and are able to watch
them improve. There is nothing like wheeling a patient into the hospital and
eventually watching them walk out or the firsthand experience with a burn
patient smiling from ear to ear as they improve after every treatment. Please
contact Don Schildgen for more information. If you are not a member of the
Transportation Club, join the Club and get involved.
Dennis Scott
year, the Club sold raffle tickets for
two excellent seats for the event. At
our March meeting, the raffle will be
rolled out among the members to
sell the raffle books to family, friends,
businesses, and fellow Shriners. The
proceeds will go into the Club treasury.
This is the only money-maker for
the Club. Please try to sell as many as
you can and buy one for yourself. The
proceeds allow the Club to donate to
several of the programs within Murat.
CIRCUS – The circus is in full
swing and promises to be very successful
even in these hard times. As
usual, the Club will pass out hospital
papers to help inform the general
public regarding the excellent care
provided to the children of central
Indiana. If you haven’t signed up
to pass out papers, just stop by the
booth one hour before each performance
and give us a hand.
Everything should be the same as
far as the circus goes except we will
be in the building next to the coliseum.
BROWN COUNTY SUMMER FES-
TIVAL – Please pick up a brochure
for the upcoming festival in Brown
County, Nashville, IN. There will be
several things to do, it’s inexpensive,
and it’s only an hour away.
PARADE UNIT – The Colonels Club
is hard at work on creating a parade
unit for selected parades. Our theme
is our Shriners Hospitals with several
Colonels dressed in their white suits
and riding on the trailer. We will be
advertising our Club as well as our
hospitals. If you have an interest in
participating, please let President
Mike Waldrip know.
BY-LAW CHANGE – The proposed
change in our by-laws will be voted
on at our March meeting. The change
involves the number of members
required for a quorum.
Please join us on the first Wednesday
of the month at 7 p.m. for our
Stated Meeting. Several of us have
dinner before the meeting around
5:30 to 6 p.m.
Highlanders
FAREWELL TO AN OLE FRIEND – The Highlanders and
many friends said good-bye to an ole friend. Bill Earle
was laid to rest January 21, 2013. A piper of more than 50
years, a firefighter of more than 30, a tall and quiet man,
Bill through his long life had gathered many friends. His
life was simple: love my family, love thy brothers. I learned
a lot from this kind gentleman. Although our trades were
the same, it was his look at life, his kind words, and the
love and respect he gave to people that I remember most
about him. At 89 years of age, Bill was the oldest living Murat
Highlander. If there was ever a firefighter’s firefighter,
Bill’s name would be there. A traditional firefighter’s Call
and directors of the Montgomery County Shrine Club
were sworn in by Past Potentate Charlie Crabtree. They are
Bob Suiter, President; Steve Wicks, First Vice President; Ed
Stephens, Second Vice President; Mike Hargrove, Secretary;
and Greg Miller, Treasurer. Directors were Steve Middleton
and Jim Stevenson, one-year; Mark Hampton and Eric Oliver,
two-year; and Todd Stevenson and Steve Lewis, threeyear.
Chairman Bob Chezem related the Countdown of 2013
will be held on April 20. Chairman Greg Miller related the
2013 Golf Outing will be Friday, July 12, at Rocky Ridge.
At the January meeting, Steve Wicks brought as his
guest, Billie Hallett, and he will be our newest member.
Welcome aboard, Billie.
It was announced that Murat will not be going to Pigeon
Forge as in past years, but will be going to the Brown
County Summer Festival in its place.
It was also announced that Masonic Lodge #50 will be
having its Fish Fry on October 12 and our Club will be
doing the cooking. Steve Lewis and Mark Hampton will be
heading this project for us again.
We have been informed that Dick Foxworthy (our first
president in 1975) is in St. Vincent’s Hospital in Indianapolis,
and Howard Cook has returned from Arizona already
this year. Hang in there guys!
Big Edd, let’s hope wherever you are that you’re over
that first sunburn by now.
to Home was given and Bill received his last alarm. May
you ever rest in peace, ole friend.
ANOTHER OLE FRIEND – The Highlanders also said
good-bye to Sam Thompson. The pipers played at the
recessional as Sam left the Scottish Rite for the last time.
“Amazing Grace” was piped to a nearly packed cathedral
as Sam’s casket left the Rite. May you ever rest in peace,
ole friend.
ST. PAT’S DAY – The Highlanders are now getting ready
for the big St. Pat’s Day weekend. This is our major fundraiser
of the year. Hope all Highlanders will be ready to
pipe and drum for a long weekend.
IMPERIAL, INDIANAPOLIS – This is Indianapolis’ time
to shine. Hoping to see many pipe bands come to Indy.
The parade will be Monday, July 1, with step-off at 7 p.m.
Talking with Highlanders’ own Jeffery Zaring, who is
the director for Murat temple for this year’s Imperial, he
stated many RSVPs are coming in and to expect between
10,000 to 15,000 Shriners to be in Indy for the Imperial.
As more information becomes available, it will be passed
on at our regular business meeting and/or e-mail.
That’s it for this month—spring is on its way.
Until next time …
Murat has now revived the Speakers Bureau from years
ago.
This group of knowledgeable nobles is ready, willing and
able to speak at any function where people are willing to
listen. Each member of the Bureau will have PowerPoint
presentations and will be able to answer questions after the
presentation. They are ready to speak on the topics of
Shrinedom and Shriners Hospitals for Children.
If you know of any group such as church, Rotary, nursing
groups, doctors, or any group including the Blue Lodges
in your area, just let us know.
Craig Hinshaw is the coordinator of the Speakers Bureau
and all that is needed is to call him at (317) 271-7179 to
arrange for a noble to speak.
2013 MEMBERSHIP
POTENTATE
Membership in 2013
“Having Fun and Creating
New Shriners”
Brian Lewis, Membership Chairman
The 2013 Membership Committee is working on
rolling out a new comprehensive plan that is focused
on not just creating new nobles, but also on keeping the
members we currently have and increasing participation
within our Clubs and Units.
To improve our recruitment, we’re working on getting
out to the Lodges so we can promote Shriners and Murat.
Along with that, we’re planning more events that we can
use to invite our Masonic brethren to the Shrine and see
what we have to offer.
To help increase participation, a survey was passed out
at the Leadership Seminar. We are collecting information
on all the activities and purposes of our Clubs and Units.
This information will be used to improve the way we
inform new members about the opportunities they have
to participate as a noble of Murat Shriners. We will also
be able to do a better job of getting our new members to
join a Club or a Unit.
Communication is very important, and a plan is being
developed to not just stay in contact with our current
members, but also those who have dropped their membership
in Murat, so we can promote and encourage them
to restore their membership in Shriners.
A lot is happening, and a lot is in the works, to make
2013 a successful membership year for Murat. While there
are a number of tools available to assist in promoting the
Shrine, this month I would like to focus on the Web site:
www.BeAShrinerNow.com
When you meet someone who might be interested in
joining the Shriners (even if they are not a Mason), tell
them to visit www.beashrinernow.com. There is a lot of
good information on this Web site that explains to a potential
candidate the process of joining.
Also, there is a link at the top, “The Next Step,” which
if they click on that link, they can enter their contact
information. That information is then sent to the Murat
Membership Committee so we can invite the prospect to
upcoming Murat events. Additional contact from the Committee
will provide them with opportunities to become a
Shriner.
A big part of our membership plan is to focus on having
a good time and especially showing potential members
the fun they could be having if they join Murat. As
part of our recruitment plan, the Membership Committee
will be hosting an Open House once every three months.
The formal program at the Open Houses will only be
about 30 minutes. Following each Open House will be
a Band Night or other fun event at the Oasis. We don’t
need a big long sales pitch to convince someone to join
the Shriners—we just need a good social event for them
to see how much fun we have and encourage them to
become part of the group.
We’ll also have another event or two each month to
provide opportunities to bring prospective members to a
Murat social function, introduce them to our nobility, and
show them why they need to join.
Anyone who has submitted their information on www.
beashrinernow.com will be invited to all of these events,
so please encourage potential members to sign up today
so we can invite them to attend the events at Murat.
Committee, you can find a copy of our Leadership
Seminar presentation online at http://bit.ly/2013MuratMe
