2010-11 Roster
Charlotte
Softball
The 2011 softball squad returns six starters and four seniors from a team that won 40 games, third most in school history, and took
third in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 2010. Charlotte hit the 40-win mark for the just the third time in school history and went 15-5
in conference play. Emily Jeffery and Serena Smith capped their 49er careers with milestone seasons. Jeffery struck out 342 batters,
eclipsing her own single-season record, and moving into first place in the Niner record books with 782 career strikeouts. Smith
drove in a school record 51 runs in 2010 and now sits atop the school’s career RBI list with 126 runs batted in. The Niners also saw
successful senior campaigns from Keri Palma, who batted .279 with 20 RBIs. The four departed Niners will be missed, but with the
returning veterans and a wealth of young talent coming to the squad this season, 2011 will prove to be an exciting year for Charlotte
softball.
“With 13 returners from last year’s 40-win team, they know there is a high level
of expectation from them,” head coach Aimee DeVos said. “We want the big wins
this year and we want the conference championship in Charlotte to belong to us.
In order to do so, we need an explosive and consistent offense and I feel we have
that this year. Our lineup has the ability to manufacture and score runs in all spots
of the order, one through nine.”
Infield
Any discussion about the 49er infield must begin with senior leader Tenaya
Tucker at the catcher position. Tucker has started all but four games in her career,
and has been a mainstay in the Niner offense. Last season, Tucker batted .291 and
compiled a .444 slugging percentage. The Antelope, Calif., native hit five home
runs last year and led the team in doubles with 12. She drove in 35 runs, secondmost
on the team, while only allowing three past balls in 58 games behind the
plate.
A trio of underclassmen and junior Lorena Vela make up the rest of the infield.
Sophomore Lindsey Holloman manned third base last year and gained valuable
experience, playing in 47 games and starting 44 of them. Freshman Jalisa Rock
and returner Brittney Brinkley will look to replace Palma at shortstop in 2011.
Rock is a two-time high school league MVP from Montebello, Calif., where she
Senior Tenaya Tucker
helped Cantwell Sacred Heart of Mary to Camino Real league championships in
2007 and 2008. Vela is an upperclassman staple up the middle for the Niners. After
playing third base for much of her freshman year, Vela split time between third and second base last year, but saw action exclusively
at second base towards the end of the season. Sophomore Chelsea Stamey, who started 16 games at second base will be counted on
to contribute at second base and third base. At first base, newcomers Kalie Lang, a sophomore transfer out of Northwest Florida State
College, and Chelsea Ingersoll, a local catcher/infielder product from Butler High School,
as well as sophomore Virginia Prince, will helm the position.
“It’s been great to watch our infield mature as a defense the last 4 months,” DeVos said.
“This year our infield has depth at all positions which has led to greater intersquad
competition that is going to make us a very solid unit on the infield.”
Outfield
The 49er outfield is loaded with veteran talent, as seniors Kendra McCall, Whitney
Williams, Carol Buchan and sophomores Nikki Gayle and Briana Gwaltney will supply
speed and power from the outfield spots. McCall led the team with a .355 batting average,
tallying 15 RBIs in the process, and Williams broke the single-season school record in
stolen bases, swiping 40 bags, while hitting .330 on the year. Combined, McCall and
Williams stole 58 bases in 67 tries. Also moving to the outfield will be All-Atlantic 10
Freshman team member Gwaltney. The Anaheim Hills, Calif., product hit .271 with four
home runs while playing first base in her rookie campaign. Senior Carol
Buchan, who played in 49 games as a pinch runner and scored 21 runs last
year and sophomore Nikki Gayle, who played in 20 games last year will be
two more strong presences in the outfield.
“The outfield is the one place on the team where there are no new faces,
although we have moved Bri Gwaltney to the outfield,” DeVos said. “This
is an extremely quick, experienced and aggressive set of players. They are
going to take away hits from opposing teams.”
Pitchers
Though the loss of Jeffery will be tough to overcome, the Niners do return
an established starter in senior Katy Hackett who appeared in 26 games,
starting 22 of them, and went 17-6 with a 2.87 ERA over 148 2/3 innings
as Charlottes No. 2 starter in 2010. Hackett recorded 132 strikeouts last
season and in her career is 41-28 with a 2.45 ERA and 393 strikeouts.
Charlotte also brought in pitchers Katie Watkins, a freshman from
Knightdale, N.C., and Lang this season. Watkins earned all-conference
honors all four years at East Wake High School, while Lang attended
Ardrey Kell High School prior to attending NFSC for one year. Both
players will play a pivotal role in the 49ers’ success this season.
Senior Katy Hackett
“We have a nice combination of experience and youth on the mound,” DeVos
said. “We will rely on Katy Hackett’s three years of experience to anchor the staff. We are excited to add two up-and-coming pitchers
- junior college transfer Kalie Lang and freshman Katie Watkins. Depth will be the key to our pitching staff as all three pitchers will be
in the rotation this season.”
Schedule
Charlotte opens the season with three consecutive home
tournaments, the 49er Round Robin, featuring opponents UNC
Wilmington, Virginia Tech and Iona, on Feb. 12-13 will serve
as the season-opening weekend for the team. The First Pitch
Classic, where the Niners will see St. Francis, UNC Greensboro
and Eastern Kentucky, will take place on Feb. 18-20, followed
by The Green and White Tournament, where Charlotte hosts
Seton Hall, Robert Morris and James Madison, on Feb. 25-27.
Other notable non-conference matchups include a doubleheader
against North Carolina at Chapel Hill on March 2, bouts against
South Carolina on Feb. 23 and April 20 and matchups against
regional rivals Furman, UNC Greensboro, Winthrop, NC State and
Elon. Charlotte will also travel to Rock Hill, S.C., for the Adidas
Tournament, to face Wright State, Gardner-Webb and Cleveland
State.
Conference season will begin on March 18, as defending Atlantic
10 champion Massachusetts comes to town. The Niners will play
two games against each member of the league before hosting the
Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament on May 11-14 at D.L. Phillips
Complex.
AIMEE
DeVOS
HEAD COACH
17th Season
(Drake, 1993)
In 2010, Aimee DeVos completed her 16th
season as head coach and 16th with the 49ers
softball program. After serving as the interim
head coach in 1995, DeVos was named head
coach for the 1996 season. The Niners won 40 games in 2010, third-most in
program history, and DeVos celebrated her 400th-career victory.
AIMEE
In her tenure, DeVos has made great strides with the program on and off the
field. She has recorded Charlotte’s largest, third-largest and fourth-largest win
totals, while also putting together nine 20-win seasons. She is the first 49er
head coach to surpass the 200, 300 and 400 career-win marks. DeVos collected
her 400th win in a 4-2 topping of Elon on April 22, 2010. She achieved her
300th career victory in a 4-2 conference decision against George Washington at
the 2007 Atlantic 10 Tournament. Just as important as her success on the field,
DeVos has also graduated 100 percent of her players since taking over as head
coach.
DeVOS
She recorded her most successful season in 2006, leading the 49ers to
numerous school records, including the most wins in a season (42), as well as
the program’s first-ever conference champi¬onship when Charlotte went 17-3 in their first season in the A-10, capturing the regular season title. In
addition to setting the single-season records for hits, batting average, homers and RBI, her 2006 team included a record six all-conference selections,
including four first-team honorees. Three of those players repeated in 2007 to claim conference nods.
Last year, Charlotte won 40 or more games for the third time in program history, and its fifth straight 30-plus win season. The 49ers went 40-18
overall, and posted a 15-5 mark in A-10 action. Emily Jeffrey shattered her season strikeout record with 342 and pushed her career strikeout standard
to 782 whiffs. She matched her win total from 2009, going 23-11. Whitney Williams stole 40 bases, breaking the single-season school record, and
Serena Smith set the 49er record in career RBIs, finishing with 126. Keri Palma earned first-team All-Atlantic 10 honors, while Smith and Jeffrey
both made the second team. Smith and Jeffrey also were named NFCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region, while Briana Gwaltney tallied conference allfreshman
accolades. Smith and Williams garnered Academic All-Atlantic 10 honors on the season as well.
During the 2009 season, Charlotte posted a 33-16 record including a 14-4 mark in Atlantic 10 play. The Niners’ conference record earned them the
Atlantic 10 Con¬ference Runner-up title missing out on the conference crown by only two games. The season saw several program records fall with
Emily Jeffery fanning a former program-high 294 batters on her way to a 23-win season, the third highest total in Niner history. On the offensive end,
Sarah Malene moved into first place with 150 career runs scored and Cee Brooks drove in 113 RBI, second-most in school history. Serena Smith lead
Charlotte in hits for the second-consecutive season with 62, while adding a team high .363 batting average. Three 49ers claimed First Team All-
Atlantic 10 honors with Malene, Jeffery and Smith picking up the awards.
In the 2008 season, DeVos put together a 35-win season, the fourth-highest win total in program history, which included a trip to the championship
game of the A-10 Tournament, hosted at Charlotte’s own D.L. Phillips Sports Complex where the Niners took on No. 20 Massachusetts. That season,
the 49ers claimed a victory over then-No. 15 North Carolina at D.L. Phillips. In the circle, Katy Hackett set the then single-season record with 176
strikeouts, while Emily Jeffery put up 146 strikeouts on her way to 18 wins. On the offensive end, all-conference selection Sarah Malene shattered
her 2006 single-season record with 46 runs, while Serena Smith re-wrote the record books with 71 hits. Four 49ers were named to the all-tournament
team, while Malene and freshman Whitney Williams earned all-conference nods.
A four-year letterwinner at Drake, the Yorkville, Ill., native boasts a healthy softball resume from a successful program. DeVos graduated from Drake
in 1993 with a degree in business marketing. She was a 1993 All-Missouri Valley Conference player after leading the Bulldogs to the MVC regular
season and tourna¬ment championships and a spot in the 1993 National Invitation¬al Championship. A shortstop and outfielder, DeVos still ranks
among Drake’s all-time leaders in home runs.
In addition to her head coaching duties, DeVos conducts sev¬eral summer and winter softball camps and clinics. In the summer of 2004, she coached
a select group of players to play the U.S. Olympic team in Charlotte. DeVos is also a member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and a
member of the NFCA Head Coaches Committee.
DeVos and her husband, Dan, have two sons, Nolan and JJ Her husband is the Director of the Annual Fund for the Charlotte 49ers Athletic
Foundation.
MELISSA
PORCHE
ASSISTANT COACH (Pitchers)
3rd Season
(Missouri State, 2008)
MELISSA
Melissa Porche begins her third year with the 49er staff
after being named assistant coach on August 1, 2008. She
handles all of the pitching/catching duties for the Niners.
Last year, Charlotte pitching saw unprecedented success,
as Emily Jeffrey racked up 342 strikeouts, a single-season
school record, and set the school’s career strikeout mark
with 782. Charlotte ranked fourth in the A-10 in team ERA
(2.13), fourth in opponent batting average (.232) and third
in total strikeouts (477).
PORCHE
In 2009, Charlotte improved in several important categories under the tutelage of Porche. The 49ers saw
increases in strikeouts, while decreasing the opponent’s batting average and extra-base hits. Charlotte’s
strikeouts jumped from 332 in 2008 to 401 last season, despite playing in fewer games. The number was
so drastic that Niners’ pitchers struck out on average three more batters per game in 2009 and lowered their
opponent’s batting average from .257 to .218.
Prior to joining up with coach DeVos, Porche played internationally in Europe during the summer of 2008, after
wrapping up her senior season at Missouri State.
During her four year campaign at Missouri State, she was the ace of the staff and was named to the Missouri
Valley Conference First Team during her senior season. Porche put together a career mark of 59-48, with a 2.22
ERA and 744 strikeouts, while recording 17 saves and tossing 20 career shutouts. Porche also excelled in the
classroom as she was twice named to the MVC Scholar Athlete team.
A native of Buena Park, Calif., Porche earned her Bachelor’s De¬gree in Psychology from Missouri State in
2008.
KRISTI
PAINTER
ASSISTANT COACH (Offense/OF)
3rd Season
(Charlotte, 2007)
KRISTI
Kristi Painter enters her third season as an assistant coach
for the 49ers softball squad. Her duties include overseeing
the offense and outfielders.
During the 2010 season, Painter helped Serena Smith
surpass Charlotte’s career RBI mark, pushing her career
total to 126, and outfielder Briana Gawltney earn a spot on
the conference’s all-conference team. In her first season as
an assistant coach for the 49ers, Painter helped to improve
Charlotte in several offensive categories including; batting
average, home runs, slugging percentage and on-base
percentage.
PAINTER
Prior to joining her alma mater’s coaching staff on August 1, 2008, Painter was the Head Coach at nearby
Central Cabarrus High School in Concord, N.C., while also coaching a summer softball team and giving private
softball instruction.
At Charlotte, Painter lettered from 2004-07, where she was a standout for the Niners by twice being named a
First Team All-Atlantic 10 performer. She holds both the career (20) and season home run records (11, 2006).
Painter was key to the 2007 team, who appeared in Charlotte’s first ever A-10 Championship game, by being
named to the A-10 All-Tournament team, after hitting .538 in four games with three RBI. She wrapped up a
solid career in 2007 with 105 career RBI, which sits in third place overall on the school’s all-time list.
A native of Concord, N.C., Painter graduated in December 2007 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Middle Grades
Education. Painter, formerly Kirsti Killough, is married to Michael Painter.
Niners Win 40 Games
The 49ers compiled a great 2010 season in
which they won 40 games for only the third
time in school history, including 15 wins in
conference play. Charlotte reached the 40-win
plateau for the first time since the 2006 season,
when it won a school-record 42 games, and the
15 league wins is the second-most conference
victories all-time.
Third Place in the Atlantic 10
The Niners went 15-5 last season in the Atlantic
10 conference and finished the regular season in
third place behind NCAA Regional participants
Massachusetts and Fordham. From April 11 -
May 1, Charlotte won 10 consecutive conference
contests.
Emily Jeffery Goes Out on Top
Former Niner capped her Charlotte career with
a tremendous 2010 season, setting new singleseason
records in wins (18), strikeouts (342)
and shutouts (12). Her 342 strikeouts shattered
her former record of 294, which she set in 2009,
and the 12 shutouts tops her 2009 school record
of nine. She also posted an ERA of 1.39 last
year, the sixth-best single-season ERA in the
Charlotte record books. In a game against South
Carolina, Jeffery recorded 17 strikeouts against
the Gamecocks, setting a school record.
Jeffrey ended her career as the all-time leader in
strikeouts (782) and shutouts (26) in Charlotte
history. The Matthews, N.C., product owns
almost 200 strikeouts more than second-place
Kirtsen Bowen, who racked up 584 whiffs in her
tenure. She also ranks third in career wins (64)
and ERA (1.72) For her efforts, Jeffery earned
second-team NFCA All-Mid Atlantic Region
and second-team All-Atlantic 10 honors.
Powerful Senior Seasons
Joining Jeffery with a strong senior campaign,
Serena Smith hit .332 with seven home runs
and 51 RBIs, while starting all 58 games in
2010. The 51 RBIs mark a school record and her
seven homers is tied for fourth all-time. Smith’s
profilic career is littered all over Charlotte’s
record books, as she owns the most career
RBIs (126), the fourth-highest batting average
(.342) and is tied for sixth all-time with 11
career home runs. Last season, Smith collected
second-team NFCA All-Mid Atlantic Region
and second-team All-A10 recognition. Fellow
outgoing senior Keri Palma garnered first-team
All-A-10 accolades, as she hit .279 and drove in
20 runs on the year, while starting at shortstop
in 52 games.
Stolen Bases
Whitney Williams joined the broken record
foray in 2010, stealing 40 bases in 44 attempts,
including a four-swipe game against George
Washington, which matched a single-game
school record. The 40 thefts passes former Niner
Sarah Malene’s standard of 36, set in 2009.
Williams now sits in third in all-time stolen
bases, three shy of second place and 13 short of
tying Sarah Malene’s career record.
All-Atlantic 10 Freshman
Sophomore Briana Gwaltney became the fourth
Charlotte player to be named to the Atlantic 10
All-Freshman squad last year, and the first since
Williams earned a spot on the team in 2008.
Gwaltney started all 58 games in her rookie
campaign, batting .271, hitting four home
runs and driving in 25. She ranks fifth in RBIs,
fourth in home runs and fifth in doubles among
freshmen all-time in Charlotte history.
Home Perfection
D.L. Phillips Softball Complex proved to be an
insurmountable place to play during conference
season last year. A year after winning 21 games
at home, the Niners topped that mark with 22
overall victories in 2010, third most in program
history, and did not lose a conference game
at home, winning all 10 league bouts at D.L.
Phillips Softball Complex. The Niners also swept
in-state rival NC State at home, out-scoring the
Wolfpack 9-3 in the two games.
Answering the McCall
Kendra McCall led the squad last year with a
.355 batting average, a mark that ties for third
in the Charlotte record books in a single season.
The average ranked third in the conference last
year. Along with the batting average, McCall
hit one home run, plated 15 RBIs and stole 18
bases.
Charlotte’s Charitable Efforts
The Niners not only kept busy with practice and
workouts this offseason, but also with several
community service projects. Charlotte took part
in numerous charitable campaigns, including
the Stroll for Epilepsy, Operation Christmas
Child, volunteering at Harrisburg Elementary
School and the RAD program. At the Fall
Stroll for Epilepsy on Nov. 6, the softball squad
participated in the walk, along with signing
autographs and manning some of the games
and activities. With Operation Christmas Child,
the team filled shoeboxes with necessities, toys,
and candy for kids who are less fortunate across
the world as a Christmas present. Every week, a
contingent of the squad volunteers at Harrisburg
Elementary School, reading and helping the
kids with school work for a couple of hours.
The squad also partook in the four-week RAD
Training Program offered on campus, helping
out with various self-defense methods taught in
the classes.
In the spring, the Niners participated in
Samaritan’s Feet, a non-profit organization
dedicated to giving shoes to impoverished
children around the world, and invited sevenyear
old Dominick Moye, a patient at the Hemby
Children’s Hospital undergoing chemotherapy
treatment for acute myeloid leukemia, to be a
batboy in 2012.
The Four Newcomers
Charlotte welcomes four newcomers to the
squad this year. Chelsea Ingersoll (Charlotte,
N.C./Butler H.S.) is a two-time All-State catcher/
infielder, who was named 2009 4A Southwest
Catcher of the Year. Kalie Lang (Charlotte,
N.C./Northwest Florida State College/Ardrey
Kell H.S.) comes to Charlotte as a pitcher/first
baseman after hitting .277 with four home runs
and 24 RBIs last year with the Raiders. Jalisa
Rock (Montbello, Calif./Cantwell Sacred Heart
of Mary) an infielder from out west, earned
league MVP honors twice in high school and
led her team in home runs all four years. Katie
Watkins (Nightdale, N.C./East Wake H.S.)
claimed all-conference honors all four years in
high school.
Softball
On March 2, 1975, the idea of what is now the Atlantic
10 Conference was conceived. What started as an eightschool,
men’s basketball-only affi liation has grown into a
14-university, 21-sport league that is universally hailed as
one of the best conferences in the country.
That growth and prominence is a direct result of the ideals
and commitments of the member institutions of the Atlantic
10. The 14 member institutions of the A-10 are united and
strengthened by their diversity. Each is
extraordinary in its educational mission,
whether of a Catholic faith, a private
university or a land grant institution. The
varied pursuits of each member prove
that there are many threads that weave
the fabric for a great conference.
Following a standout career as a student-athlete, Bernadette
V. McGlade has dedicated nearly 30 years as both a coach
and administrator to the enhancement of the student-athlete
experience. She has aggressively embarked upon new challenges
and possibilities in an effort to preserve and promote
the excellence and integrity of collegiate athletics.
Named the fi fth full-time commissioner of the Atlantic
10 Conference on June 2, 2008, McGlade, in unison with
the Council of Presidents and directors of athletics began
working to shape the image and branding of the league and
further position the A-10 as the best non-BCS conference
in the country. McGlade quickly embraced the pride and
commitment of each institution, and enthusiastically announced
in March 2009, that the fi nals of the Men’s Basketball
Championship would be aired nationally on CBS on Selection
Sunday for the fi rst time in league history, beginning in
2010.
The presidents and chancellors of Atlantic 10 institutions,
in conjunction with Commissioner McGlade, have made a
strong commitment to making the academic and athletics
equation a successful one. Over the years, the league membership
has strived to better recognize
the academic accomplishments of its
student-athletes.
The league sponsors Academic All-
Conference teams in each of its sports
and honors one student-athlete per
sport as the A-10 Student-Athlete of the
Year. Moreover, the Atlantic 10 provides four postgraduate
scholarship grants to qualifi ed student-athletes. In 2010,
Charlotte’s Adam Gross, Whitney Roth and Lauren Olson
of Saint Louis and Xavier’s Kelly Ruth received postgraduate
scholarship grants.
In all twenty-one sports sponsored by the Atlantic 10,
the league’s Academic Progress Rates (APR) surpassed the
conference average nationally according to data released by
the NCAA.
This report is based on NCAA Division I Academic Progress
Rate (APR) data submitted by each institution for the
2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, and 2008-09 academic years.
- Fully 1,199 fall-semester
and 1,180 spring-semester
student-athletes at Charlotte
were recognized on the A-10
Commissioner’s Honor Roll
last year, holding a grade point
average of 3.5 or higher.
- All 21 A-10 sponsored
sports surpassed the national
conference average in the
latest NCAA Academic
Progress Rate (APR)
- The A-10 ranked third out
of 31 Division I conferences
in APR for four sports, fourth
in three others, sixth in one
and tenth in another

In 1991, Dubois was recruited to UNC Charlotte, where he spent the
next six and a half years as provost and vice chancellor for academic
affairs. Dubois was credited with drafting a strategic academic plan,
leading the development of the university’s first comprehensive campuswide
also planned and launched its fi rst doctoral programs.
In 1997, Dubois was named president of the University of Wyoming.
On March 18, 2005, Dubois was named UNC Charlotte’s fourth
35,000 students by the year 2020; completion of key capital construction
projects (including a major new building to be located in Center City
Charlotte); and improvement in the efficiency and effectiveness of critical
business processes.
Dr. Dubois and his wife, Lisa Lewis Dubois, have three children
Logan, an associate with an executive placement fi rm in Raleigh; Taylor,
an information technology associate with Bank of America; and Ali, a
completed a term as 2003-04 President of the National Association of
College Directors of Athletics (NACDA). She is currently the chair of the
Championship/Sports Management Cabinet.
With the 49ers, she has overseen the 49ers moves from the Sun
Belt Conference to the Metro Conference to Conference USA and onto
the Atlantic 10 in 2005-06. She has overseen the 49ers growth into a
program that for the fi rst time is fully-funded at the NCAA level for athletic
scholarships. She has helped develop nearly $50 million worth of athletic
facilities which have enhanced playing venues, academic services,
strength and conditioning programs, training and medical support to
improve the experience of each and every student-athlete.
She has been instrumental in attracting national sporting events to
Charlotte and has led the 49ers most aggressive push to add football
to the Charlotte 49ers program, unveiling plans to start the program in
2013.
The 49ers have enjoyed similar success in competition and the
classroom. Since Rose became A.D., 14 of the school’s 16 athletic
programs have either won a league title or been represented in NCAA
play, or both. Prior to her stint as A.D., only two programs touted such
success. Meanwhile, the athletic department now boasts a cumulative
GPA of over 3.0 and Charlotte has won fi ve of the last 10 A-10 Scholar-
Athlete of the Year Awards.
Along the way, Rose has reaped her share of awards, for professional
success, contributions to the community and leadership.
Home of Niners Softball
Since joining the Atlantic 10 in 2005, D.L. Phillips has become a treacherous place for Niner opponents to play at with the 49ers
posting a winning record in each of the previous four seasons. Last season, Charlotte posted the third-most home victories with 22.
Over the past four seasons, Charlotte is 57-30 at D.L. Phillips Complex good for a winning percentage of .655.
This year, the D.L. Phillips Softball Complex will have a different feel to it for fans
and players as new bleachers were put in behind home plate for improved viewing
of the field. The bleachers feature 300 total seats with a mixture of chair-back seats
and metal bleachers with back support. The new seats will add to the atmosphere
at D.L. Phillips, which hosted the 2008 Atlantic 10 Softball Tournament when the
49ers reached the championship game.
The softball complex also features bullpens, batting cages, a press box, a concessions
stand as well as lighting allowing the Niners to play night games. The softball
team’s locker room and coaches’ offices are located in Wachovia Fieldhouse, which
overlooks the field. Each player has their own individual locker in the fieldhouse.
