Tarnished Turtles prepare for Knackerfest<br />

The Cayman Islands National Oldies Team<br />

- ‘Tarnished Turtles’ went on a gruelling<br />

tournament to Jamaica recently. The team<br />

which is sponsored by RE/MAX Cayman<br />

Islands, attended a six game weekend<br />

competition against the Jamaican oldies<br />

team ‘Old Crocs’. Although no one is too<br />

sure about the actual result, everyone is<br />

in agreement that the ‘Old Crocs’ won the<br />

tournament.<br />

The trip is a very good preparation<br />

for the upcoming Knackerfest, where<br />

the ‘Tarnished Turtles’ face a field of<br />

international teams. The Knackerfest takes<br />

place at the South Sound Rugby Club from<br />

the 20th-22nd of November. With two<br />

teams from the Cayman Islands, two teams<br />

from the United States and one Jamaican<br />

team this promises to be the biggest event<br />

ever.<br />

Affordable Housing also available in Sister Islands<br />

The Sister Islands Affordable Housing<br />

Development Corporation (SIAHDC), is<br />

pleased to announce that it is now able<br />

to offer, in conjunction with the National<br />

Housing Development Trust (NHDT), the<br />

Government Guaranteed Home Assisted<br />

Mortgage (GGHAM) program, and Build on<br />

Your Own Property (BOYOP) program for<br />

Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.<br />

The GGHAM program allows prospective<br />

clients to get a home up to CI$200,000<br />

(providing the client qualifies for<br />

appropriate financing) with Government<br />

guaranteeing 35% of the amount. The<br />

scheme is for buyers who have the financial<br />

means to qualify for a mortgage from a<br />

private bank, but who lack the required<br />

capital injection (deposit), to achieve<br />

The BOYOP program allows clients to<br />

build a home on their own land. There<br />

are limitations to the total cost of the<br />

project – which must be within the NHDT’s<br />

definition of low income.<br />

An on-going initiative of SIAHDC, separate<br />

from GGHAM & BOYOP, is Phase 2 of<br />

Affordable Houses that are being built at<br />

the West End site, Cayman Brac. Currently<br />

being built are two 2-Bedroom houses and<br />

two 3-bedroom houses.<br />

“There a number of advantages with this<br />

program; the applicant does not need a<br />

down payment; they are getting a standard<br />

sized lot on top of the bluff; the houses are<br />

built out of completely reinforced concrete<br />

walls inside and outside; the prices are an<br />

exceptional value. I would challenge the<br />

public to find a better value in the Cayman<br />

Islands and also encourage them to come<br />

forward with ideas to make Affordable<br />

Housing even better.” explains General<br />

Manager Todd Eldridge. “Applications<br />

are now being accepted for Phase 3 and<br />

plans are to implement new initiatives as<br />

funding allows”<br />
