The RE/MAX <strong>Knackerfest</strong> is the annual<br />

oldies rugby tournament held on the<br />

weekend of the 20 - 22nd of November<br />

at the South Sound pitch of the Cayman<br />

Rugby Football Union. For 12 years now,<br />

through thick and thin teams visit, they<br />

play, they party, they relax, they go home<br />

and they write back and say what a great<br />

place the Cayman Islands is. Only one<br />

year in the 12, the November after Ivan,<br />

was there not a visiting team; but in the<br />

spirit of the game and the camaraderie of<br />

the sport, the Jamaica Old Crocs sent their<br />

uniforms and the rugby club fielded two<br />

teams and played for them!<br />

And that’s the spirit in which <strong>Knackerfest</strong><br />

and oldies rugby in general, is played; this<br />

air of camaraderie, which makes it different<br />

from the spirit of heavy competiveness<br />

that marks most tournaments.<br />

“We love <strong>Knackerfest</strong>” says James Bovell,<br />

Broker/Owner of RE/MAX Cayman Islands<br />

and Jim Bergstrom, Partner at Ogier, both<br />

of whom are sponsors of the event.<br />

“Because of my workload at Ogier I don’t<br />

get to play rugby regularly” adds Bergstrom<br />

“but I never want to miss <strong>Knackerfest</strong>, it’s a<br />

great atmosphere.”<br />

The Tournament’s key sponsor is RE/MAX<br />

Cayman Isladns who with Ogier’s actually<br />

sponsor the entire oldies programme and<br />

not only <strong>Knackerfest</strong>.<br />

that has a series of year round events that<br />

the support of these two guys.”<br />

This year’s <strong>Knackerfest</strong> sees a return to<br />

the number of visitors that it has not seen<br />

since Ivan, with teams from Delaware<br />

and Miami, in the US, joining the stalwart<br />

Jamaicans and the home team.<br />

“The year before Ivan we had six teams<br />

playing in the tournament, including<br />

“So with the return of teams other than<br />

Jamaica, especially in these hard economic<br />

times, we begin to appreciate that<br />

<strong>Knackerfest</strong> is a want-to-do tournament<br />

Last year’s <strong>Knackerfest</strong> saw some very exciting moments on the South Sound Rugby Pitch<br />

The tournament runs from the 20th to the<br />

22nd of November and everybody’s invited<br />

to the party’s and the games, starting with<br />

the welcoming party at the South Sound<br />

Clubhouse on Friday evening, games and<br />

food on the Saturday and the fun in the<br />

sun match and pig roast on Sunday at<br />

lunchtime.<br />

“We’d love to see people down there.”<br />

Continues Grizz, “treat it like an open<br />

house, come drink and eat with us, watch a<br />

little rugby, rub up against the camaraderie<br />

and the fun … it’ll be a great time.”<br />

For the Little Ones a bouncy castle will be<br />
