INTRODUCTION In presenting this treatise to our readers which is the crowning success of our works, we have but one object : facilitate the task of the stenographer and give to his pen lighter and faster wings. Notwithstanding the fact that one can attain a great speed in pulling into practice the rules of the Superior Course, we have created these Fifteen Hundred Abbreviations to lessen the work in a still greater degree than if the application of the rules and the use of prefixes and suffixes alone were made. We retain in a stenogram but the signs that are most necessary in the reconstruction of words. These abbreviations are faster than speech since in one, two or three strokes of the pen they represent words, locutions of several syllables, and even whole sentences. Do we not, every day, use abbreviations in our ordinary writing For instance : Co., J. C, Dr., Mrs, Mr , P.S., N.B., MS , MSS, Rev., St., Ave., viz. or i.e., . A.M., P.M., inst,, prox., ult., A.D., &c, &c. It is impossible to analyse all the abbreviations contained in this book, but the intelligent student will very easily reason them sinci they are founded on principles of strict logic. A few explanations will suffice : In many instances the first syllable of a word accompanied by a suffix reduces a long stenogram to 2 or 3 strokes of the pen : administration, circumstance, constitutional, providential. ^ O K Oftentimes we will find series of words deriving from a same radical : just, justice, justly, justifiable, justiciable, justification certain, certainly, certitude nature, natural, naturalist, naturalism, naturalisation.
