Editor: Sheldon Santwan A vast palette of design elements, especially, in interior designing calls for myriad design idioms with an empirical approach that is subjective. This abstract palette - colours, textures, materials, furniture and furnishings - reflects one's Modus Vivendi. Besides an array of design elements involved in articulating an indoor space beautifully, the craft of furniture designing plays a vital role amongst the lot. Lately, furniture designers have exploited numerous materials, adapted explicit technologies and challenged the structural stability to set a high benchmark to their portfolio of work amongst their professional peers. Furniture designs are being crafted in a mammoth of styles - from a region's tradition to a universal design acceptance to spatial forms designed against gravity - which are as many as the languages that exist in our country. On going back to our history, furniture designs were attributed to its functional sphere designed eloquently with precious gems and intricate carvings; challenging its aesthetics. Their characteristics were limited to their functionality and aesthetics. But today, the furniture's frugal expressions have taken a new form - an art of sculpture, a multipurpose artefact, or technology-integrated concepts. Furniture design, being an essential element in spatial articulation, defines the character of the space and brings in the warmth to the spatial dimension. To name a few, designers like Yael Mer and Shay Alkalay, Ronan Bouroullec and Erwan Bouroullec, and Oki Sato have presented sui generic design ontology in the product design sphere which are discoursed in this issue. In addition, the issue highlights on Interior design that is a confluence of the traditional and contemporary design axioms, in harmony, across disparate regions of the world. But with the growing obsession for sci-fi, will the pattern language of interior space transmute the age-old design principles?
