Welcome to the 2015 Open House New York Weekend! At its heart, OHNY Weekend is the celebration of an extraordinary city and its architecture. From grand civic buildings to meditative gardens, historic homes to new infrastructures, the wide array of places you can visit during OHNY Weekend affirms New York as one of the leading centers of architecture in the world. For two days, Open House New York transforms the city into a living museum of design, one in which a stunning legacy of historic buildings is enriched by an impressive and expanding inventory of contemporary architecture. OHNY Weekend is more than just a celebration, though. It is also a reminder that access–to buildings, to public space, and to the city itself–is essential to a vibrant civic life. The access that OHNY Weekend makes possible brings us together as neighbors and New Yorkers for a shared experience of the city. It is this access that deepens our understanding of the complexities of what it takes to design, build, and preserve New York. And it is through access that we better appreciate how thoughtful, intelligent design–whether it is of a bike rack, a home, or a neighborhood–can immeasurably enrich our day-to-day lives and strengthen our communities. For all of this access, we are especially indebted to the hundreds of individuals who will open their doors this OHNY Weekend to welcome you inside, and to the one thousand volunteers who will give their time and energy to staff these participating sites. Without their very special contributions to the civic realm, OHNY Weekend would not be possible. On behalf of all New Yorkers, we thank them. Best wishes for a wonderful OHNY Weekend! Gregory Wessner EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OPEN HOUSE NEW YORK Dear Friends, It is a great pleasure to send greetings to everyone attending the 13th Annual Open House New York Weekend. As a hub of innovation and the arts, New York has a long and storied architectural history, and our city has always been at the forefront of advancements in the field of urban planning and design. The five boroughs attract some of the world’s leading architects, and their groundbreaking projects that range from the classic to the contemporary have become some of the most famous and widely recognized public spaces, skyscrapers, and cultural landmarks ever created. With its ongoing mission to foster greater appreciation for our city’s distinct architectural landscape, OHNY has showcased the buildings and structures that have come to define New York, offering visitors and longtime residents alike the opportunity to see our urban environment in new and inspiring ways. As part of the annual OHNY Weekend, workshops, exclusive tours, and discussions will bring together engineers, architectural enthusiasts, and the public to celebrate achievements in construction. The event will also offer a chance to plan for the future with attention to the latest sustainable developments and projects that are helping move our city forward. On behalf of the City of New York, I thank OHNY staff and volunteers for opening the doors of our buildings to inspire the next generation of urban designers and for paying tribute to the architectural legacy of the five boroughs. Please accept my best wishes for a memorable and enjoyable weekend. Sincerely, Bill de Blasio MAYOR CITY OF NEW YORK 1
