welcome
It’s official! According to a study by Stanford University, spending time in an outdoor green
space such as a park or nature area can benefit your mental and physical well-being.
15
We can’t help but think that’s a bonus for Oklahoma City residents. With 150 parks to enjoy
throughout the city, there are plenty of places where you can learn, play and explore.
New for this fall is the Wendel Whisenhunt Sports Complex at Woodson Park. Named after
former Parks & Recreation Department Director Wendel Whisenhunt, the complex packs in
outdoor fun with 16 youth and adult soccer fields, an adult baseball field, basketball court,
playground and concession stand.
Our Recreation Division will program the park, starting with a Fall Youth Soccer League for
children in Kindergarten through 6th Grade. All league games will be played at the Whisenhunt Sports Complex.
Leagues for children and adults are also available in basketball, volleyball and “Futsal,” a new fast-action,
indoor soccer sport straight from Brazil. If you’re really looking for a smashing good time, try your hand at Bubble
Soccer. Played outdoors or in, it’s high-impact action with an inflatable twist.
Fitness fiends and families alike will love the new West River Trail that opened in June. The 8-mile link
between the Overholser Trail and Oklahoma River Trails provides 25 miles of uninterrupted trail space for walkers,
runners and cyclists between Lake Hefner and the City’s Boathouse District.
Need a nature break? The Will Rogers Gardens and Martin Park Nature Center offer plenty of seasonal
outdoor beauty as well as dynamic education programs. Very soon, we’ll officially open the Jim Thorpe Hospital Courage
Trail with our partners Wilderness Matters. This fully-accessible trail is opening new pathways to individuals with
mobility limitations, providing them with meaningful and up-close encounters with nature, perfect for the beautiful Fall
season ahead.
FUTSAL
This popular sport that’s funny to say is the newest rage
in indoor recreation. Played with five players per team,
Futsal takes soccer to new speeds with a smaller ball
played on a hard, indoor playing surface.
Two teams of five players each, including a goalkeeper,
play for two periods of 20 minutes and there is no limit on
player substitutions. The name Futsal comes from Brazil
and the Portuguese “Futebol de salão,” which means
“room football.”
