RIVERS AND STILL WATERS
There are many different species of Trout but the two
most common found in Britain’s in-land Still Waters
and Rivers are the Rainbow and Brown Trout.
In the upper reaches of many of Britain’s waterways
the Brown Trout is indigenous and wild stocks are
maintained through good riparian habitat and
management.
Angling has become one of Britain’s most treasured
sporting past times. To support wild fish stocks
supplementary stock has been introduced and has
been common practice since Victorian times. This
continues today to support this important rural
pursuit.
Trafalgar Fisheries forms an intrinsic part of
Longford Estates Enterprises located on the
Wiltshire/Hampshire Avon south of Salisbury.
The farms have been successfully growing Trout
since 1973. The Eighth Earl of Radnor and his
River Keeper experimented with growing Trout
taking advantage of the old Water Meadow
system in the Avon Valley. As the business grew
a varied customer base was developed which
included growing prime Rainbow and Brown
Trout for stocking Rivers and Still Waters.
Process
Since the inception of the Fish
Farms our method of growing Trout
has not changed. Fry are bred and
hand reared at our Hatchery high in
the Chalke Valley before being
brought to our farms where crystal
clear water flowers from the chalk
aquifer on Salisbury Plain and
through best practice produces
healthy strong fish.
In accordance with the
Environment Agency’s guidance all
of our Rainbow and Brown Trout
are triploids to avoid reproductive
competition with indigenous Trout.
Deliveries
Trafalgar Fisheries has the versatility to deliver. We have a state of the art live fish
transport lorry and our experienced driver is also one of our fish farmers. We have
the confidence therefore to monitor optimum oxygen levels and temperature control
to ensure the highest welfare standards during transit.
Stocking - Official Guidance
The Environment Agency regulate the movement of all fish to and from Fisheries to
minimise disease and danger to the Environment.
It is against current Legislation to introduce or remove fish from a fishery unless
using rod and line.
Since 2009 waters need a Cefas registration number before gaining a Environment
Agency permit. Permits are permanent and free of charge. Please take advice
from the Fish Movement Team at the Environment Agency in advance : fmapplications@environment-agency.gov.uk
Tel: 01480 483968
Consent usually takes between 10-20 working days to process but can take longer
if your fishery is designated within a protected area (i.e. SSSI).
*Please note you may also get a fish health check if you are wishing to stock rivers
and lakes connected to open waters.
Brown Trout - Salmo Trutta
The Brown Trout - A purely
fresh water species widely
introduced into both Rivers
and Still Waters.
Riparian habitat is extremely
important for the welfare of the
Brown Trout. Habitat should
provide a safe haven from
predation, bright sunlight and
high water temperatures. Fast
flowing water provides greater
oxygen levels and this is
where Browns can be found.
Their Diet is varied from
larvae to insects flying close to
the waters surface such as the
Mayfly!
Brown Trout are a prized fish
for the River Angler.
Rainbow Trout—Oncorhynchus
Rainbow Trout - Most suited for Still Waters.
Rainbows are a highly regarded Game Fish.
They are versatile, transported and
acclimatised easily to new environments.
Many Anglers regard the Rainbow as the hardest
fighting Trout species.
