PSYCHOLOGY<br />
Qualification: AS/A Level<br />
Course Content<br />
The subject of Psychology will introduce students to a broad range of topics, including how society may affect our behaviour, how memories are<br />
formed, eating disorders occur and detailed understanding of conditions such as Schizophrenia.<br />
This course of study comprises of two written units at AS and two at A-level, with no coursework. The emphasis is on applying knowledge and<br />
understanding, thereby developing students’ transferable skills of analysis, evaluation and critical thinking.<br />
The AS course offers both a wide and stimulating range of topics leading the students to evaluate the evidence against the research methods in<br />
context. From the very beginning the Psychology specification provides students with the opportunity to develop analytical skills, write essays<br />
and psychological reports. They will also develop their mathematical knowledge and research skills. These skills are all relevant and transferable<br />
to higher education courses of study or to the workplace.<br />
At A Level there is a range of topic based options which bring together explanations from different approaches and engage students in issues<br />
and debates in contemporary Psychology. Again focusing on the students learning transferable skills for their futures.<br />
Year 1 - AS examination<br />
Unit 1 – PSYA1; 1 hour 30 minutes<br />
50% of the total AS marks<br />
Structured compulsory questions based<br />
on Social Influence, Memory and<br />
Attachment.<br />
Questions include short answer, multiple<br />
choice and extended writing.<br />
Unit 2 – PSYA2; 1 hour 30 minutes<br />
50% of the total AS marks<br />
Three compulsory structured questions,<br />
one based on approaches in Psychology,<br />
Psychopathology and Research Methods<br />
Years 1 and 2 - A Level<br />
Examinations<br />
Units 1 and Unit 2 as above, 33.33% each<br />
of the total A Level marks (AS grades do<br />
not count towards the final assessment)<br />
Unit 3 – PSYA; 2 hours<br />
33.33% of the total A-level marks<br />

What Could I Do Next?<br />
Psychology is the science of mind,<br />
behaviour, and experience. By studying<br />
this course pupils will obtain an excellent<br />
introduction to the key areas of<br />
psychology. The A level in Psychology is an<br />
excellent course for pupils who may<br />
consider studying at a higher level or for<br />
those simply wishing to study one of the<br />
most popular A level courses.<br />
Psychology lies at the intersection of many<br />
other different disciplines, including<br />
biology, medicine, linguistics, philosophy,<br />
anthropology, and sociology.<br />
For example, neuropsychology is allied<br />
with biology, since the aim is to map<br />
different areas of the brain and explain<br />
how each underpins different brain<br />
functions like memory or language. Other<br />
branches of psychology are more closely<br />
connected with medicine. Health<br />
psychologists help people manage disease<br />
and pain. Similarly, clinical psychologists<br />
help alleviate the suffering caused by<br />
mental disorders.<br />
Entry Requirements<br />
Minimum grades BB in English and maths<br />
are essential.<br />
