Admissions Policy and
Application Process
6
Students from both Mascalls Academy and other schools are
invited to apply to the Sixth Form at the beginning of Year 11 via the
UCASProgress website, making an on-line application.
We would expect students interested in joining Sixth Form to
have attended the Post 16 Options/Sixth Form Evening, where
students have the opportunity to speak to subject teachers and
find out about the options available to them.
Upon application, students will elect a pathway they would like to
follow:
Mascalls Academy Higher pathway (MAH), for students intending to
move onto University/Higher Education or a Higher Apprenticeship.
Students will study 3 or 4 A Levels over 2 years.
Mascalls Academy Progression pathway (MAP), for students
intending to move directly into a career after Sixth Form,
foundation degree, or work-based training/apprenticeship in a
specific area (accountancy for example). Students generally will
study 2 A Levels, alongside 1 or 2 vocational qualifications over 2
years.
Mascalls Academy Employability pathway (MAE), for students
intending to move into further education, work-based training/
apprenticeships, or wanting to develop practical skills and
knowledge in a specific employment area. Students will follow a
mainly vocational programme, alongside work placements over 1,
2 or 3 years.
Students wishing to enter the Sixth Form should meet the
minimum criteria for the pathway chosen.
For access to the MAH pathway, students should hold a minimum
of five GCSEs at grades A*-C (BTEC/OCR Distinction*-Merit),
including English and maths, meeting specific subject entry criteria
as published on the website and on our application grid.
For entry to the MAP pathway, a minimum of five A*-C/Distinction*-
Merit grades, including English and/or maths are required, again
meeting minimum subject entry as specified.
To study in the MAE pathway, a minimum of five A*-C/Distinction*-
Merit grades, are required, with subject specific entry as per the
Progression pathway.
Where English and/or maths GCSE has not been achieved,
students will be required to continue with the study of either/
both as appropriate, until a C grade (or alternative stepping stone
qualification) is met.
Entry conditions are published on our website at the beginning of
each application year, and further details can be found under each
subject entry requirement in this prospectus.
Following application, all Year 11 students at Mascalls are
interviewed and a suitable Sixth Form study programme
provisionally advised.
Students from other schools are invited to attend a sixth form
morning, during which they will have the opportunity to meet
current sixth form students and discuss subject options with a
member of the sixth form team. Similarly, a suitable Sixth Form
study programme will be provisionally advised at that point.
We hold an induction programme each year and for 2016 entry,
this will be held from Monday 27th June to Wednesday 29th June
2016. We have a high expectation that all serious candidates will
attend the three day programme, during which time students will
experience lessons in all of their proposed subjects, attend study
skills sessions and undertake preparatory sixth form orientation.
All places offered are conditional upon GCSE grades and our
published Admissions Policy. Ultimately, however, the key criteria is
that the student will achieve success and benefit from the courses
they have chosen.
