campfire showcases skits from our campers and features awards from the week.<br />
CPR Classes for Scouts and Adults—This certification class is held each Monday at 7 PM at the<br />
Meninak Lodge. Open to any Boy Scout or adult for a cost of $20.<br />
BSA Leave No Trace 101—This course is a general introduction to the Leave No Trace ethics and<br />
skills to those with little prior exposure to it. Learn more about this important program.<br />
Firem’n Chit and Totin Chip— Learn fire safety and how to use a knife and axe properly.<br />
Trek Safely—This course shows the Boy Scouts of America’s recommended procedure for<br />
organizing and carrying out outdoor treks that involve Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and Venturers.<br />
Climb on Safely— Learn how to plan climbing programs on the unit level.<br />
Paddlecraft Safety and Swimming and Water Rescue—These courses are designed to give all the<br />
training needed for a Scout leader or Scout at least 16 or older to conduct paddling or swimming<br />
activities on the unit level. This intensive course replaces BSA Lifeguard for the unit level.<br />
Safety Afloat and Safe Swim Defense—this is an overview of how to run a safe and fun paddling or<br />
swimming program.<br />

ecology, waterfront, scout skills, Green Bar Bill, and archery.<br />

Follow me Boys – Camp Shands will show the Boy Scout Movie “Follow Me Boys” at 8 pm.<br />
FRIDAY Theme - Hawaiian Luau - Have fun with an island flair!<br />
Mile Swim – Scouts and leaders must practice all week and swim at 4:30 pm<br />
Family Night – Families are invited dinner for only $6 per person. 5 and under free.<br />
Aquatics fair – test your skills at our fun Aquatics fair with a Hawaiian luau theme. Scoutmasters try<br />
the famous Belly Flop Contest.<br />
Closing Campfire – Enjoy troop skits and awards for the week at 8 pm.
Green Bar Bill Program<br />
An Important Program. The first year of summer camp is vital to the connued parcipaon of a boy in<br />
Scoung. A posive, successful year will encourage a Scout to return next year. Our finest Camp Staff members<br />
lead the Green Bar Bill Program.<br />
Back to Basics. The emphasis is on Scoung Basics, outdoor skills, personal development (teamwork and<br />
success) and helping Scouts to truly enjoy their first long-term camping experience. Scouts will be put into patrols<br />
and spend the week learning how to work as a team so they can earn totems while building pride in themselves.<br />
Some of the skills they will learn are proper flag equee, fire building, knots, first aid and more!<br />
Hiking. Scouts will learn that hiking is more than just an exercise, it’s a great way to show Scouts the great<br />
discoveries to be found in the outdoors. Scouts will be given the opportunity to learn about proper hiking skills,<br />
how to idenfy animal tracks and tree and plant species and complete a 5-mile hike, appropriate footwear and a<br />
water bole are required.<br />
Map & Compass. Scouts will have the opportunity to use a orienteering course that encompasses over 1/3 of<br />
the camp property. From wide open spaces to finding markers in the thick brush and trees.<br />
Uniform. Scouts are strongly encouraged to bring and wear a complete BSA uniform during dinner, vespers and<br />
campfires.<br />
Programs. There are 3 programs that are adapted for each advancement Scouts are working on. The different<br />
programs will work on the requirements in the boom box of this sheet.<br />
Trailblazers Periods 1 – 3 Course is geared towards new Scouts working on their joining requirements<br />
& Tenderfoot rank requirements. We encourage Scouts to take<br />
First Aid, Swimming, and handicra merit badge classes. Recommend<br />
Scouts to bring backpack to learn about the proper way to pack.<br />
Pioneers Periods 4 – 5 Course is geared towards Scouts working on Second Class rank requirements.<br />
Fronersman Periods 4 – 5 Course is geared towards Scouts working on First Class rank requirements.<br />
Records Informaon. Upon compleon of camp, each Scout will be provided with a list indicang the<br />
advancement requirements completed during their stay at Camp Shands.<br />

Emergency Procedures—These are on bulletin boards and are shared with each Scoutmaster and Senior Patrol Leader at the<br />
Sunday night meeting.<br />
Medical Forms—Every Scout and adult leader s required to complete a BSA Annual Health and Medical Record including parts A,<br />
B & C with a Physician’s signature in the last 12 months.<br />
HAZING AND INITIATIONS ARE NOT TOLERATED AT CAMP SHANDS!!<br />
Adults—Two deep leadership is required and all adults should be registered members of the BSA. We can pair up small troops.<br />
Automobiles and Golf Carts—Each troop may haul troop equipment into and out of their campsite during check-in and checkout.<br />
No vehicles may be left in the campsites. Equipment trailers may be left in campsites. Golf carts only for medical reasons.<br />
Refunds—Troop reservation deposits are not refundable. Camper fees will only be refunded in case of serious illness, emergency or<br />
unplanned summer school. All refunds must be requested within one week of attendance. Refund requests are made by email to<br />
carrie.kurtz@scouting.org. After May 31 will only be 80% of fees paid.<br />
T Shirts—Scouts and leaders receive a t shirt as part of their camp fee. Make sure you enter sizes carefully. In addition, you will<br />
receive info on ordering custom t shirts for your troop.<br />
Insurance—Troops in North Florida Council covered. Out of Council troops must provide proof of insurance upon arrival at camp.<br />
Camp Equipment—Troops are responsible for any damage to tents, cots and camp equipment.<br />
Meals for Visitors—Meals for camp visitors are available. One day notice is needed. Meal prices: Breakfast $4, Lunch $5, and<br />
Dinner $6.<br />
Texting—Camp Shands has a text alert system to notify in case of emergencies and remind about important programs<br />
Many leaders find this system very helpful.<br />
Bedding—Each youth gets a cot and adults get a metal bed.<br />
Leader's Lounge—We have an air-conditioned leaders lounge with wireless.<br />

Camp Shands Pistol Pilot Program<br />
Parcipaon and Hold Harmless Agreement<br />
Camp Shands (North Florida Council) will be conducting a pilot program for Pistol safety and marksmanship<br />
during 2015. This program is conducted under the approval of the Boy Scouts of America.<br />
Scouts will be instructed how to handle, maintain, and shoot a pistol safely and be provided instruction<br />
to increase their marksmanship skills.<br />
Scouts will have both classroom instruction and range instruction in which they will fire a pistol under<br />
the supervision of a trained Range Safety Officer and pistol instructor at Camp Shands property.<br />
Scouts will be required to wear eye protection and ear protection at all times while on the range.<br />
Scouts are expected to abide by all safety rules and the instructions of the Range Safety Officer(s) and<br />
Pistol Instructor(s).<br />
I, the undersigned, give my child, ________________________________, permission to participate<br />
in this program. I understand that participation in the activity involves a certain degree of risk. I<br />
have carefully considered the risk involved and have given consent for my child to participate in the<br />

4. Follow the instructions of the Range Safety Officer(s) and Pistol Instructor(s).<br />
5. Do not handle the pistols until instructed to do so by the Pistol Instructor(s).<br />
6. Follow the instructions of the Range Safety Officer(s) at all times.<br />
7. Is 14 years of age, or 13 and has completed the 8th grade, as of the start of the class and will<br />
be in full compliance with all local state and federal guidelines, including age restrictions and<br />
original equipment manufacturer standards.<br />
8. Will respond to the camp satisfaction survey from the Boy Scouts of America to help in the<br />
evaluation of the pilot program.<br />
