Wine producers with this icon displayed are participants in the Tasmanian Mixed Dozen freight scheme. This allows you to

purchase a bottle or two from different vineyards as you travel around and have wine dispatched to your home address once

you’ve reached a dozen bottles. Present your purchased wines (in dozen lots) at the last participating vineyard on your travels

from which you purchase wine - they’ll let you know the cost of freight and it will be sent straight to you.

INTRODUCTION

Welcome to the 2016 edition of Tasmania’s wine trails, your ultimate

guide to navigating the island’s beautiful wine growing areas. In addition

to providing details of cellar doors and vineyards, you’ll also find

complementary food and tourism experiences.

Introducing the Tasmanian Seafood Trail

Living close to the sea, Tasmanians understand fresh seafood. Partner the

island’s superb seafood with its outstanding local wines for a match made

in heaven!

In 2016, Wine Tasmania and the Tasmanian Seafood Industry Council have

partnered to share with you the Tasmanian Seafood Trail, allowing you to

find some of the island’s outstanding seafood at restaurants, pubs, bars,

through tours and retail outlets. You’ll find the Seafood Trail shown within

the relevant touring areas throughout this publication. You can also visit

www.winetasmania.com.au/wine_trails and select “Tasmanian Seafood

Trail” for an interactive map. Find out more about the Tasmanian Seafood

Industry Council at www.tsic.org.au.

On our gourmet island, you will savour the sweet saltiness of plump

oysters, the delicate flavour of delicious scallops and abalone and

delicacies like octopus and Tasmanian-caught southern rock lobster

(or ‘crayfish’ in Tasmania). If it is scalefish you’re after, blue eye trevalla,

blue grenadier, flathead, pink ling and Tasmanian Atlantic salmon or ocean

trout are iconic Tasmanian species that are readily available in most retail

outlets and restaurants. Shellfish on offer includes Pacific oysters and blue

mussels, while divers harvest periwinkles, pipis, clams and urchins.

If you like your wines cool climate, elegant, intense

and structured, visiting the island is the best way to

taste some of Australia’s best!

Did you know that the vast majority of Tasmania’s 160 licensed wine

producers only sell their wines within Tasmania? If you like your wines cool

climate, elegant, intense and structured, visiting the island is the best way

to taste some of Australia’s best!

The Tasmanian cellar door experience is as diverse as the range of wine

styles, from converted heritage stables to ultra-modern cellar door

restaurants.

TASMANIA’S WINE TRAILS 2016 5

Not only will you have the chance to ‘wine’ your way around the island, you

will be amazed at the fresh local food on offer from individual producers

and at farmers markets, the natural scenery, the arts, culture, heritage and,

most of all, the interesting, passionate characters that call Tasmania home.

Tasmania’s boutique yet burgeoning wine sector boasts seven distinct wine

growing areas, which are divided into four wine experiences to assist visitors

to the island state - the north, the south, the east coast and the north west

coast. All are within easy reach of major centres or are located en route to

some of Tasmania’s iconic attractions.

Take your time to explore the varied wines of the Tamar Valley and Pipers

River in northern Tasmania or take an easy drive from Hobart to the

Derwent, Coal River and Huon Valleys. There are also award-winning

vineyards waiting on the stunning route from Cradle Mountain to the

north west coast or en route to Freycinet and Wineglass Bay on the sunny

east coast.

Varietal Wine Trails - create your own

If you have a favourite wine or two, you can create your own itinerary

focusing on your favourite wine. For example, you can select Tasmanian

producers of sparkling wine and create your own Sparkling Wine Trail or

Pinot Noir, or any of the island’s outstanding wine varieties. All you have to

do is visit www.winetasmania.com.au/wine_trails and select your favourite

variety / varieties from the drop down menu.

Tasmania’s naturally elegant wines are made from grapes grown in climates

similar to much-celebrated European wine regions - with mild summers

and long autumn days that slowly ripen the grapes, providing elegance

and intensity of flavour. Tasmania is renowned for its Pinot Noir, sparkling

wines, Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon and

Pinot Gris, and more.

Tasmania enjoys a national and international reputation as a leading

producer of some of Australia’s premium wines, winning high praise and

plenty of trophies from wine judges and critics alike.

So enjoy our regional wines, friendly encounters with growers and

winemakers and celebrate the delights that come with the changing of our

seasons with a visit to one or more of Tasmania’s wine areas.

You will find oodles of information to help you plan your visit to our little

island of gourmet paradise at www.discovertasmania.com. You may also

like to explore complementary food and beverage trails during your visit,

such as the Tasmanian Cider Trail (www.tascidertrail.com) and Whisky Trail

Wine Tasmania encourages responsible consumption of alcohol and recommends the

following: don’t drink on an empty stomach, drink plenty of water, use spittoons and if

you plan to drive – choose a designated driver or take a guided wine trail tour.

NORTH WEST

WINE TRAIL

Experience the Unexpected

Don’t be fooled by its size! Although the

North West is the island’s smallest wine

growing area, it more than makes up for

it with its outstanding wines!

The North West is the gateway to some

of Tasmania’s most beautiful natural places.

Exploring the North West you’ll find the

unexpected - classic coastal drives, food and

wine, stunning national parks and beautiful

nature reserves.

Tasmania’s North West is a great place for

touring and offers spectacular views at every

turn, from Mt Roland near Devonport, Table Cape

near Wynyard and the famous ‘Nut’ at Stanley.

And some of Tasmania’s prettiest cities and

towns sit right on the water’s edge on the scenic

North West coast, each with their own unique

attractions and relaxed seaside atmosphere.

There’s an ongoing tradition of agriculture here

that’s evident in the rich red soils and patchwork

fields found throughout the countryside.

There’s a wealth of stories here too, with some

great museums and significant Aboriginal

heritage sites, while the region’s creative spirit

is showcased in the many art galleries, public

artworks, artisan shops and markets found along

the North West coast.

Tasmania’s North West is also home to Cradle

Mountain, one of Tasmania’s most visited icons,

offering amazing nature experiences, including

forest adventures, great walks - easy and hard -

and some of the best scenery in the world.

Whichever way you explore the region, there’s no

shortage of great places to stay, eat and enjoy in

Tasmania’s North West.

The North West is the gateway to

some of Tasmania’s most beautiful

natural places.

Things to see and do:

Walk to spectacular Dove Lake and

take in the stunning wilderness views

in the Cradle Mountain National

Park, or just relax with a therapeutic

massage or sauna at the Waldheim

Alpine Spa at Cradle Mountain Lodge.

Savour fine food and wine in a

wilderness setting by visiting Peppers

Cradle Mountain Lodge during its

annual Tastings at the Top or one of

their winemaker dinners. Details at

www.cradlemountainlodge.com.au/

food-wine.

View spectacular rolling hills of

rainbow colour when the tulips bloom

in spring at Table Cape (near Wynyard).

Experience some of the region’s arts

and crafts by visiting local galleries

such as the Devonport Regional Gallery

– housed in an old Baptist Church.

Stroll the shore in easygoing seaside

villages of Ulverstone, Penguin,

and Wynyard. Visit the popular

Penguin market.

WINE ROUTE

An Authentic Journey

Launceston, in Tasmania’s North, is Tasmania’s

second largest city and a vibrant hub for food

and wine, culture and nature. It’s also the gateway

to the Tamar Valley and Pipers River wine

growing areas.

Out of Launceston, the surrounding green fields and

country lanes are lined with 150 year old hawthorn,

poplar and elm trees, while in the rich farmland of

the Tamar Valley can be found lavender plantations,

vineyards, strawberry farms and orchards.

The Tamar Valley is Tasmania’s oldest wine-growing

area and a place where premium cool-climate

wines, outstanding fresh produce and award

winning restaurants go hand in hand. The cellar

doors, vineyard restaurants and farmers’ markets

of Launceston and the north offer some of the best

gourmet experiences in Australia.

From the Valley, to Pipers River in the north,

there are more than 32 vineyards within driving

distance of each other. Cellar door tastings are

a specialty of the Tamar Valley - expect to be

pampered, surprised and delighted by your visit

to the Valley.

is a voyage of modern indulgence and discovery of

glorious history. Tasmania is a land that should be

savoured slowly…with a glass of fine wine in hand

and friendly locals to guide you on your way.

Holm Oak is one of Tasmania’s most highly regarded

family wine producers. Our philosophy is to make

single vineyard wines with personality and character

that reflect us and the place where we live. Rustic,

down-to-earth, not super polished, but genuine

and authentic. When you visit us you can taste a

diverse range of wines, or sit down and discover our

collection of four Pinot Noirs through a self-guided

comparative tasting.

Just a short drive from Launceston you will find one of

Tasmania’s family owned hidden treasures. From the minute

you pull in the driveway you will feel like you have uncovered

your own secret winery.

Greeted by a view surrounding the cellar door of breathtaking

vineyards you can wander down the path to visit Pinot d’Pig and feed

him a few apples before reaching Cellar Door for an informative and

relaxed tasting.

Along with the diverse range of wines we have on offer, you can

also choose to purchase a flight of Holm Oak’s four Pinot Noirs and

discover and savour the different characters of each of the styles in this

fantastic self-guided comparative tasting.

At cellar door you will also find a selection of local cheese, terrine and

salmon products to create your own platter or picnic. There are some

great locations surrounding our cellar door for a picnic – the lovely

secluded courtyard, the entrance lake or our new deck.

SOUTHERN

WINE TRAIL

Discover Hobart & Beyond

Hobart, Tasmania’s capital city, is located on the

Derwent River in Tasmania’s south. Vineyards

are closer to Hobart than any other capital city,

including in the Derwent Valley, Coal River Valley

and the Huon / Channel wine growing areas.

South of Hobart are the clear waters and

stunning coastline of Bruny Island, the fertile

soils of the Huon Valley where vineyards and

orchards nestle side-by-side and the picturesque

beauty of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel.

East of Hobart are the wineries and vineyards of

the Coal River Valley and the Tasman National

Park with its spectacular coastline and historic

convict sites.

To the north west is the Derwent Valley, where the

road follows the beautiful Derwent River through

rows of poplars and on to Tasmania’s central

highlands and the grandeur of Lake St Clair and the

Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area.

North from Hobart, the Midland Highway heads

to Launceston. Dubbed the Heritage Highway, it

offers many opportunities to enjoy Tasmania’s

heritage past, with homesteads and country

cottages reflecting the state’s early colonial history.

This stunning region offers arts and culture,

food and drink, wilderness, heritage, wildlife

and waterways are ever present, yet it is the

experiences from one moment to the next that

will ensure you never forget Tasmania’s south.

This stunning region offers arts

and culture, food and drink,

wilderness, heritage, with wildlife

and waterways ever present.

Things to see and do:

MONA is the Museum of Old and New

Art, displayed in a secular temple at

Moorilla Estate: 6,000 square metres

of artwork that will batter your beliefs.

Each Saturday hosts Australia’s best

outdoor market on Salamanca Place

– bargains and buskers, art and craft,

food and wine, trash and treasure.

Visit the pinnacle of spectacular Mt

Wellington and see the entire city and

its harbour below.

Enjoy some of the freshest local

produce matched with award winning

wines on Hobart’s waterfront,

including at 2015 Tasmanian Wine List

of the Year winning venues - Henry’s

Restaurant at the Henry Jones Art

Hotel (Judges’ Choice) or the Ball &

Chain Grill (People’s Choice).

Immerse yourself in the power of Port

Arthur, its convict buildings, gardens,

tours and captivating tales – an

essential Tasmanian experience.

Coal River Valley

Wine Region

Come and treat yourself to the superb wines

and food in the Coal River Valley Wine Region.

Only a 20 minute scenic drive from the city, the

region has the largest concentration of vineyards

in southern Tasmania.

Step back in time with a visit to Richmond, an

historic village nestled in the rolling hills of the

the streets, and mellow sandstone glows in the

sun. An amazing number of beautiful old stone

buildings constructed by convict labour have

stood the test of time.

Exploring Richmond and the Coal River Valley is

a delight. Savour the locally produced fine wines

and cheeses, visit the art galleries and antique

shops, and be tempted by the bakery and lolly

shops. Try the succulent fresh local oysters from

the Pittwater estuary.

There’s lots of colonial accommodation in the
