Story of the Exped

Goose

In 1981, deep in the wilderness

of the Canadian

Northwest Territories,

Exped founders Andi

and Heidi Brun lived

for 9 months using simple

tools and food gathered

from nature. Nothing

impressed them more

than the serene movements

of the wild geese

flying over head.

FEATURES

d

c >

Attention paid to every detail...

a > Fast setup and ease of use:

- Slide poles into colour coded and angled

sleeves.

- Secure the pole ends in the adjustable

tension pockets.

- Set tent pegs and guylines depending

on the weather conditions.

Continuous pole sleeves allow poles to

glide effortlessly through intersections.

Canopies come factory mounted.

< g

e

>

>

f

b > Adjustable floor loops of Dyneema

cord for easy placement of tent

pegs. They put a 8“ / 20 cm radius at

your disposal in which to find the ideal

spot to sink the peg.

c > Open anchor loops, inverted for

easy guyline attachment.

d > Strong and weatherproof: bombproof

shelters created by combining

wind shedding designs with strategi-

< a

< b

cally placed dual guy points on each

sleeve. Guylines anchor directly to pole

structures for superior stability in any

weather. Guylines are of ultralight and

static Dyneema with a tear force of 300

lbs/140 kg. This prevents the guylines

from stretching or dislodging pegs in

high winds, which otherwise leads to

flapping of the fly and structure and ultimately

fracture of the poles.

e > Enhanced aerodynamics with Flat

or Interior Pole Sleeve designs.

f > Excellent ventilation: even in rainy

conditions, condensation is kept to a

minimum by large opposed vents. This

design promotes a chimney effect to

maintain air circulation.

> No-See-Um panels on the

canopy‘s doors adjust from inside the

tent to control ventilation. Careful attention

to design ensures there is no contact

between fly and canopy.

g > Loads of space: unique Exped designs

maximize usable interior space

with steep side walls and large, protected

vestibules. Vestibules provide ample

space for storage and cooking (If cooking

inside the vestibule, always prime

and light stoves at a safe distance from

the tent). Models with dual vestibules

and entrances offer easy access. Doors

are large enough for two people to sit

next to one another.

> Fully waterproof shelters with factory

taped seams, polyester core/cotton

wrap thread, and taped or seamless

bathtub floors.

> Canopies can be unhooked to

increase vestibule space. Loops and

pockets keep the tent tidy.

> Natural, pleasing colors: warm

yellow interiors are pleasant and relaxing,

even when stormy weather

keeps you inside the tent.

Earthy, green color rainflies blend with

nature; or bright terracotta color rainflies

are easily spotted in bad weather

or from a distance.

> Integrity: Keep it simple and

reduce weight - care is taken to use

simple, proven designs and hardware.

Examples include toggle and loop

connectors for fly and canopy, adjustable

pole tension pockets made of

webbing and pole repair sections. Of

course, field repairability goes without

saying!

> Multi-functional and versatile:

The rainfly can be used alone for storage

space or as basic shelter, best in

combination with a tent footprint. The

canopy can be setup on its own as bug

shelter in clear weather. Unhook part of

the canopy to increase the space under

the fly. Numerous zipper sliders allow

doors to be opened in different positions.

designs enable Exped tents to be easily

moved to a new location or to be

cleaned by shaking overhead. Developed

by Exped, the “ridge tunnel tent“

is a new type of structure that combines

a Tunnel design‘s maximum usable

space with the Dome‘s freestanding

capability.

> Easy maintenance:

Tent poles‘ end caps remove easily

to adjust the shock cord in changing

weather conditions or to replace a broken

pole section.

Pole tension pockets are made with

strong, but simple materials (webbing

and a small pole segment). In the event

of a failure, such materials can be repaired

anywhere in the world unlike proprietary

plastic parts that can break at

the worst times and are hard to replace.

All Exped tents include spare parts:

zipper sliders, adhesive patch fabric,

and emergency pole repair segments.

> Easy packing:

The pole segments are short enough to

allow the packed tent to fit square into

most large backpacks and uniform

length pole segments (except the end

sections) mean that taking along just

one segment can address most any repair

situation; side entry packsacks surround

the rolled tent without effort or

strain.

> Accessory bag: Poles, tent pegs

and spares pack into three separate

compartments of the accessory bag.

This ensures that pole and spares stay

clean and away from the muddy pegs.

The accessory bag can be used as

compression roller when folding the

bundle into the packsack.

> Freestanding and spacious:

Most models are either freestanding or

require just a few stakes to ensure that

the tent is not carried off by wind. Such

Quality materials:

In the non-Extreme series tents the

rainfly fabric is strong, lightweight ripstop

polyester: UV-resistant and meets

CPAI-84 flame retardant guidelines. Extra

strong PU coatings on the fabric‘s

underside offer long wearing waterproofness.

In the Extreme series the fly fabric is

a durable, lightweight, silicone coated

ripstop nylon with improved UV- and

tear-resistance. However, silicone coated

fabrics do not meet CPAI-84 fire retardant

guidelines. (See tent models for

specifics).

Single wall tents are made of fully waterproof,

but highly vapor permeable

VentAir fabric.

All Floors are made of durable taffeta

nylon with heavy PU coatings; have a

waterproof rating of 14+ PSI (10,000+

mm water column) and are either factory

seam taped or seamless to maxmize

strength.

Mosquito netting is of ultra fine, very

UV-resistant No-See-Um polyester that

keeps out the tiniest of bugs.

16

E x p e d s t a n d s f o r q u a l i t y.

Rainflies with external pole sleeves are

easier to setup because poles encounter

less resistance. Internal pole sleeves

increase stability and offer less wind

resitance.

The perfect solution is found in the

Flat Pole Sleeves developed by Exped

that combine the advantages of both

sleeve designs.

Poles of state-of-the-art TH72M extruded,

seamless aircraft aluminum by

DAC. These are rigid but pliable enough

to yield in strong winds. DAC poles

snap back to position without breaking

and then damaging the fly. DAC poles

are less likely to burr if they snap together

during setup which can cause

the segments to fit improperly and lead

to breakage.

Reliable YKK zippers in the fly and

canopy are sewn smooth side out to

reduce exposure to dirt, which could

cause premature wear.

The zipper pulls are reflective, colour

coded and glow in the dark. They

are long enough for easy handling even

when wearing gloves.

Lighweight and sturdy aircraft aluminium

stakes are provided in two grades

for both hard packed and soft ground

condition.

Ample guylines include adjustable tensioners,

especially developed by Exped,

that secure around most fixed objects

without complicated knots. Key lines

are factory pre mounted and provided

with Exped‘s own Cord Stuffsacks (also

available separately).

Guylines, developed by Exped, are of

ultralight and static Dyneema with a

tear force of 300 lbs/140 kg. This prevents

the guylines from stretching or

dislodging pegs in high winds, which

otherwise leads to flapping of the fly

and structure and ultimately fracture of

the poles. The guylines have a Dyneema

core and polyester sheath. Dyneema

is 15x stronger than steel and 40%

stronger than Kevlar of the comparable

weight. A reflective thread has been

spun into the sheath for visibility in the

dark. Sheaths and cores can be separated

to increase usable length.

Quality workmanship:

Lap-felled seams (4 inter-wrapped

fabric layers) are single or double factory

taped. Stress points are reinforced

with extra-duty patches and are sewn

with crossover stitching to better distribute

forces over larger areas of fabric.

All stress points are bartacked.

Thread used throughout is ‘polyester

core, cotton wrap’ that expands when

wet to seal stitch holes.

> Warranty and service: Exped tents

carry a 5 year, limited warranty on defects

in workmanship and materials. At

its discretion, Exped will repair or replace

any part that fails due to manufacturing

defect. Failures due to normal

wear, negligence, accidents and

acts of nature can usually be repaired

for a nominal charge. Please see your

outdoor retailer for details or contact

Exped.

> And why not even lighter? Light

can mean less durable. The increasing

UV radiation requires a minimum in

fabric weight and strength to prevent

premature degradation of the product

when exposed to the sun.

CORD STUFFSACK

DYNEEMA TENTCORD

> Footprints available for all Exped tent models

protect the tent floor from abraison, dirt, and

humidity. Shaped like, but 10 cm (4“) smaller

than, the tent floor to prevent rain from collecting

between footprint and tent floor. As they also cover

the vestibule floor space, the vestibule stays dry

and clean. Attaches with adjustable, elastic cords.

> Lightweight Gear Loft. Attaches to the canopy roof

with adjustable elastic straps found in the corners

and the center, which prevent it from sagging under

weight. Ideal for storing your glasses or drying gear. A

loop in the middle is ideal for hanging a flashlight.

Fits the following tent groups:

> The battle with tangled guylines is finally over. An

ingenious stuff sack made for tent guylines enables

quick packing and leaves them ready for use the next

time without hassle! Insert your fingers in the sack,

wrap the line around and turn inside out. An extra flap

keeps everything from unraveling. Leave it to Swiss

for ingenuity and efficiency!

> Guylines developed by Exped are both ultralight

and static, with a tear force of 300 lbs/140 kg. This

prevents the cord from stretching and tearing in high

winds, which otherwise leads to flapping of the fly

and structure and ultimately to fracture of the poles.

Combine footprint and rainfly to travel extra light!

for synthetic bags, feature downproof

design by employing a dense weave

with a high number of superfine fibers.

But despite the tight weave, both fabrics

are highly breathable, velvety soft,

and very abrasion resistant. They repel

bags use Pertex Endurance® waterpoof

water repellant ripstop nylon

shell.

*Standard-Test BS3546 Part 4 1991

e > Bar-tacking: Stress points, such as

zipper ends, are carefully reinforced to

prevent failures, rips and tears.

e

f > Lining fabrics are of comfortable

and soft to the touch Texped PR 58 microfiber

polyester, which easily conforms

to body shape and eliminates

cold spots. With high thread counts,

all fabrics are naturally downproof, unlike

cheaper calendered fabrics that will

lose downproofness and vapor permeability

with time.

g > Double tuck-stitch design: Three

layers of fabric, instead of two, are secured

together with the seam fixed beneath

the surface. This special technique

prevents snags, protects the

seams from moisture and is more abrasion

resistant than simpler, traditional

sewing techniques. Inner baffles are

secured with a special second seam,

so that even if the main seam fails, the

goose down fill cannot escape the bag.

h > Loops at the foot end permit the

bag to be secured while airing without

risk of being blown away by wind.

i > Locking zippers feature reflective,

glow-in-the-dark pulls that will not

accidentally open - once set, the zipper

glider stays in place.

j > Inner pockets: convenient storage

for small, personal items.

39

k > Draft collar: the clever, double velcro

closure reliably blocks airflow.

l > Chin guards: soft fabric guard prevents

contact of the zipper to skin.

m > Fabric edges are overlock

stitched to prevent fraying, especially

important with lightweight fabrics.

n > Closed baffles: Highest quality baffle

construction without gaps prevents

down shift between chambers and uneven

fill distribution, which could otherwise

lead to cold spots.

o > Draft tube: zipper is backed by an

oversized draft tube, which is also divided

into three chambers to prevent

down shift. A stiffener prevents the zipper

from snagging.

p > Mat loops: Two loops at hip height

can be used to secure the bag to the

mat. Just tie a string to the loops and

pass under the mat.

q > Angled foot box: The foot end of

the sleeping bag is set at the same angle

as you feet naturally do.

Connectivity: Left and right zips connect

multiple bags, be it for comfort

or emergency warming (for example, 2

people warming a 3rd, hypothermic

person). YKK #8 left-push zippers connect

with other high quality sleeping

bags on the market. [Center zip bags

use YKK #5 zips].

3D baffle design: Horizontal and vertical

baffles prevent down shift and eliminate

cold spots. Most bags have over

30 chambers. Baffle walls , constructed

of fine tricot mesh, easily stand up to

the strain of washing.

Smart accessories: sleeping bags include

a storage sack of ultrafine, No-

See-Um netting that does double duty

as bug protection or as a laundry bag.

Stuff sacks are waterproof compression

bags with fold-n-roll closures. Just roll

once, press out the air, then roll shut.

Complete sleeping system: Two bags

paired together (inner + outer) create

a system that can adapt to a variety of

adventure situations and temperature

ranges. For example, a downfill Woodpecker

paired with a synthetic-fill Traveler,

or a Bivybag 100% eVent, as the

outer bag offers greater flexibility than

a single, very warm bag of comparable

weight. To ensure this adaptability,

Exped considered sleeping bag compatibility

and sizing when designing the

bags. As such, some bags are cut larger

to accept a separate, inner bag (e.g.

Traveler). The WB-series bags do it all:

great insulation and comfort in a waterproof

but breathable, design.

Optimal fit: a complete range of sleeping

bags to fit most adults, depending

on body size and sleeping behaviour.

Remember: an improperly sized sleeping

bag can be cold if too large or tight,

so try it for fit before buying. Also consider

the mat when choosing the sleeping

bag. We state temperature ratings

for our mats to help in finding the temperature

range you may require.

Tested materials: Exped uses thoroughly

tested materials that have gone

through both lab and field testing. Independent

labs use internationally recognized

standard tests to evaluate down

fill power and quality, water vapor transmission,

water column, water repellency,

abrasion and tear resistance. Down

tests are done by the renowned IDLF

(Salt Lake City, Utah, USA) with each

production run. (Test results available

on request).

Field tests are conducted by outdoor

professionals, including Erhard Loretan

(Himalaya expeditionist with all 14 8000m

summits), Christof Hagen (wilderness and

survival expert), Serge Lambert (professional

mountain guide with over 30 years

of experience), and Martin Epp (mountain

guide and wilderness professional). Of

course, numerous other outdoor experts

and the Exped team also contribute.

Temperature ratings as per EN 13537:

The Euro-Norm temperature rating for

sleeping bags is designed to provide

comparability between different bags

and across brands. A certified laboratory

measures the heat loss in a climate

chamber using a dummy attached to 16

sensors. Men and women have different

comfort experiences when exposed

to the same temperatures, hence there

is a different comfort rating for women

and men. The “Lower Extreme” temperature

is defined as the point at which a

man feels cold without shivering. The

“Upper Comfort” temperature is defined

as the point at which one begins to feel

so hot that the bag must be opened

40

Exped stands for quality.

to vent. Note: The results for a given

sleeping bag can vary between different

individuals.

Although these ratings give a good indication,

be sure to get advice at a specialist

outdoor store since there are so

many factors influencing comfort. Even

one and the same person under different

circumstances can feel up to a

10 degrees Celsius difference in the

same sleepingbag! You should also put

great emphasis on the correct choice

of sleeping mat so it matches the bags

performance.

The patented waterpoof WB (Water-

Bloc) Series: The agony of choice is

over: Down or Synthetic filled sleeping

bags? Overall goose down filled bags

are the better choice, but synthetics

perform better in wet conditions.

Now this dilemma is history, because

we offer a unique, waterproof and

breathable goose downfill collection of

sleeping bags: Ibis WB, Woodpecker

WB, Swan WB and Arctic Goose WB!

We solved this problem by replacing

sewn seams with double welded seams.

Thousands of needleholes that allowed

water to reach the down and rendered

the bag useless are now gone! Warm air

is stopped from being pushed out during

sleep. Seams are double welded

for added strength and durability. This

technology is invented and patented by

Exped, however licenced to other high

quality brands. The WBs are both waterproof

and vapor permeable. Even under

the worst weather conditons, there

are no problems with condensation

from vapor emitted by the body. Still a

skeptic? Then don‘t take our word for

it! Highly respected, outdoor experts

were eager to test a “WB“ bag, and all

were quickly sold! Here‘s a statement

from the field: Christof Hagen, founder

of Survival-Outdoor-School SOS,

offers: “Especially for my igloo courses,

where melt water and condensation are

totally normal, I always used synthetic

filled bags. The Arctic goose WB made

me change my habits.“

Warranty and Repair Service:

Every Exped sleeping bag carries a

5 year, limited warranty. Products with

defects in materials and workmanship

will be repaired or replaced. Please

our flagship mat combining all these features, followed by the SynMat and ComfortFoam mat.

mat when used as a pillow.

d > Most models have two wide mouth

or low profile valves that ensure fast

inflation and simple deflation. They are

easy to use, light and sturdy.

> 100% airtight: Each individual mat

is tested for 72 hours prior to leaving

the factory! The mats withstand 5x the

pressure usually generated during

inflation, which means they bear the

weight of a car without bursting. The

mat should be kept away from thorns,

heat sources, fire sparks and general

abuse. There is a compromise between

low weight and durability. But this can

be compensated by care.

> We produce our mats under sound

environmental and social standards

in a small family run business in Taiwan.

> Optimised packaging: The mats are

packed as compactly as possible without

making the packsack too small.

Never underestimate the sleeping mat; in fact it is more important

than the sleeping bag! To properly insulate against cold ground, a

mat should provide both insulation and comfort that comes from

full body support. Consider the following when choosing a mat: The

mat‘s R-value (lab test); the mats‘ temperature rating and your cur-

rent sleeping bag. Further criteria are weight and packed size. Fit

should also be considered as side sleepers (70% of the population)

can choose a narrower and shorter mat than people that sleep on

their back (20%) or on their stomach (10%).

Exped DownMats: super comfortable, infinitely warmer and more compact than any

other comparable mat of similar weight. Since down compresses so well, DownMats

also pack very small. Unique pump-packsack doubles both as bellows-pump and pillow.

DOWNMAT PUMP*

> Heat loss is dramatically reduced by the down insulation inside the mat, as demonstrated by

EMPA, the Swiss Federal Labaratories for Materials Testing and Research, and field tests on

expeditions. The thick cushion of air also provides comfort and smooths out uneven ground. And

as down compresses extremely well, Downmats pack smaller than other insulated mats.

selfinflating mat only has a R-Value of 2.5. Further

3x more heat to cold ground than to the air. The

These baffled airmats are unbelievably comfortable, warmer and lighter than standard

sleeping mats. The SynMat packs small thanks to the microfiber filling that compresses

extremely well. Quick inflation with the ingenious integrated pump.

Warm, comfortable, compact and affordable.

cheaper in cost than the goose down found in our DownMats. The weight to warmth ratio is far

superior to standard foam filled sleeping mats.

a > Both low profile valves (pat. pend)

one for inflation and the other for

deflation ensure eas of use. As the

valves are flat and not on the mat‘s

edge they do not protrude and are

therefore protected and durable.

b > Laminated polyester fabric is both

durable, airtight and humidity

resistant. The shell‘s top surface

is of brushed polyester fabric that

provides excellent slip resistance

and comfort next to the skin.

a > Use either your feet or hands to

pump up the mat in seconds. Flip

it over and use the built in pump as

your perfect pillow!

b > Two large low profile valves for

instant deflation. As the valves are

flat and not on the mat‘s edge they

c > The AirMat 7.5 Pump DLX is divided

in two separate chambers. Should

one of them get punctured and

loose pressure, you still have the

other for a good nights sleep.

c > The seams are high frequency

welded for durability.

> The Plus versions include a Mini

Pump for easy inflation.

> Included: repair kit with adhesive and

fabric patches.

> Small packaged size: the mats are

folded in quarters and rolled to

a > The Doublemat Evazote is made

of Evazote, a closed cell EVA foam

optimised for expedition use. Acclaimed

for extreme durability. Good

resistance to thorns, debris or your

crampons.

Multi purpose: spread it or fold it.

Use it anyway required. Works as an

insulating tent floor, sleeping mat,

rain cover or floatation aid. Cut it up

to make insoles for your shoes. No

expedition leaves home without one.

MULTI MAT+DOUBLEMAT EVAZOTE

b > The MultiMat is made of 2 mm EVA (Ethyl-Vinyl-Azetat)

foam and one side is backed by fast

drying ripstop nylon. This makes Multi Mat waterproof,

warm and tough while providing insulation

against surface moisture, cold and stones. Also

works as a carpet in your tent‘s vestibule, canopy

or beneath your tarp. Folded lengthwise it forms

a lightweight, closed cell pad for summer nights.

Insulation and comfort can be increased by stuffing

with clothing, foliage or your pack.

> EVA (Ethyl Vinyl Acetat) has been used for years

and is considered to be one of the toughest

closed cell foams for outdoor use.

150 kg / 330# > Enjoy the satisfaction of swinging outdoors, daydreaming or sleeping. Scout Hammock Combi

includes a large sized hammock with mat sleeve, mosquito net and a tarp with guylines and

cords.

> Tarp: With a seamless

design and made of

heavily PU coated taffeta

nylon for waterproof performance.

> The tarp also works

well as sun roof. Numerous

guyline loops

for easy setup and the

ridge loops attach directly

to the slits of the

hammock cords. As with

>

all Exped tents we supply

the necessay guylines

packed in practical Cord

Stuffsacks that also work

as warning flags.

> Ease of use: If the

mosquito net is not required,

just flip the hammock

over with the net

facing down.

> Stash pockets: Two

interior pockets take

up small personal items

such as books, headlamps,

glasses etc.

> Variations in setup:

Sleeves at both ends

can be used to slide in a

stick or bar making the

hammock wide and flat.

Alternatively the 4 corners

can be strung up

separately also resulting

in a wide and flat hammock.

a > The hammock has a double floor. This prevents

bugs from stinging through the fabric but als does

double duty as a sleeping mat sleeve. It holds the

mat in place preventing it from shifting around.

Anyone who has spent a night in a hammock is

familiar with the fact that it can feel cold at night

when one’s back is pressed into the fabric and

every cool breeze is felt.

The double floor also increases durability and stability

of the hammock.

b > Easy access: A generous zipper runs the length

of the hammock simplifying entry and exit of Scout

Hammock Combi.

c > Roomy mosquito net: The mosquito net has wide

dimensions and volume. Included bungee cords

and 3 fabric sleeves can be used to hold a stick

or trekking pole segments in order to adjust the

net to your needs and keeping the net and insects

away from your body. The large volume improves

the interior climate and reduces heat. The dark

color of the net is good for visibility inside out but

also offers privacy.

d > Simple set up: The included slit cords ensure

quick set up and simple tear down.
