Stockport 

College 

Stockport College sits at the heart of Stockport and provides a large 

variety of learning and training opportunities for all the people of 

Stockport and the surrounding areas. 

We have recently repositioned the College to focus on vocational 

education and training. This means that we are a specialist centre for 

skills training for employment. The College has first class resources 

to support skills training in a wide range of areas including motor 

vehicle, engineering, construction, plumbing, electrical installation, 

and painting and decorating. 

We also focus on public services, sport, leisure, hair and beauty, and 

retail services such as catering, as well as the arts including media, 

photography, performing arts, graphics. 

The College offers a broad portfolio of Apprenticeship programmes 

for all age groups, and a range of professional qualifications 

designed to support people in work or for those who want to 

improve their job prospects. The College also has a University 

Centre offering Higher Education across many varied subjects and 

disciplines. 

The College is working closely with the Local Enterprise Partnership 

(LEP) to ensure the curriculum matches the skills needs in Stockport 

and Greater Manchester, and make a positive contribution to the 

economy. The College also works with numerous local and national 

employers which also ensures the training provided is relevant 

and matches the skills needed by industry. The College has a close 

working relationship with the Local Authority to provide a range of 

provision to suit all learners in the area and to help and support the 

unemployed. Working relationships with local schools and colleges 

are good and ensures that there is a place for all pupils that leave 

school each year based on their aspirations and prior attainment. 

Stockport College is ambitious and is making excellent progress 

towards becoming an outstanding provider. We aim to transform 

the lives of all our learners to enable them to succeed and progress

Mark Paterson, a University Centre Stockport College graduate, has 

won an Emmy Award for his work on the animated series Archer. 

The achievement was 

announced at the 

Academy’s ‘Celebration 

of Excellence’ on September 

9th, 2015 and the award was 

presented on September 12 at the 

Microsoft Theatre in Downtown 

Los Angeles, California, USA. 

Mark, and co-worker Tim 

Farrell, won in the category 

‘Outstanding Achievement 

in Interactive Media’ for their 

Season 6 Scavenger Hunt; a 

multi-episode trail of Easter 

Eggs, puzzles and unique 

multiplatform content, which 

captured the imagination of the 

fans and critics alike. It has been 

cited in the press as the most 

elaborate scavenger hunt in the 

history of television. 

Archer is an American adult 

animated television series 

created by Adam Reed for the FX 

network in the USA. A preview 

of the series first aired on 

September 17, 2009. Following 

its success, the first season 

premiered on January 14, 2010. 

The animated series completed 

airing its sixth season on April 2, 

2015, and has been renewed for 

a seventh season, to consist of 13 

episodes ready for 2016. 

The inspiration for Archer 

came to Reed while in a cafe in 

Salamanca, Spain. Finding himself 

unable to approach a beautiful 

woman seated nearby, Reed 

conjured up the idea of a spy who 

“would have a perfect line”. Reed 

conceived the show’s concept 

while walking along the Vía de 

la Plata in 2008. Reed pitched his 

idea to FX, which accepted it and 

ordered six episodes, along with 

an additional four scripts. 

In addition to Mark’s 

achievement, the episode 

‘Pocket Listing’ has earned 

FX’s hit spy spoof Archer its 

second consecutive nomination 

for Outstanding Animated 

Programme at this year’s Emmy 

Awards. Season five of the show 

faced off against returning 

nominee “Bob’s Burgers,” twotime 

winner “Futurama,” fourtime 

champ “South Park” and 

“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: 

The Manhattan Project.” 

Since debuting in 2009, the 

show, which centres around the 

titular narcissistic secret agent and 

his co-workers at a spy agency, 

has been well-received by both 

viewers and critics. The show 

has increased its ratings every 

year and is one of the top-rated 

original programs on FX. It has 

won the Critic’s Choice TV Award 

for Best Animated Series three 

years in a row in the USA.

Level 2 Bench Joinery student Luke 

Robinson has been crowned winner at the 

North West Institute of Carpenters (IOC) 

competition 2015, following on from his 

first place success at SkillBuild in April 2015. 

Luke, 18, beat off stiff 

competition from hundreds 

of college competitors 

from across the North West in his 

category to be crowned winner, 

receiving a cheque for £100 from 

the IOC. 

Ex- Wilmslow High School pupil 

Luke, joined Stockport College 

three years ago unsure of what 

career he wanted to pursue when 

leaving school. Luke recalls: “When 

I was in Year 11, I didn’t really 

enjoy being in the classroom with 

textbooks. It never really interested 

me. I preferred practical lessons 

and really enjoyed studying for my 

GCSE in Resistant Materials.” 

Luke, from the rural village of 

Swythamley said: “I have grown 

up as a farmer’s son. I have been 

building things from the age of 

11. I realised my talents and that is 

why I decided to study my course 

at Stockport College. I visited for 

an open evening and my decision 

was made. The facilities are great 

and the tutors are very supportive 

and highly skilled, with industry 

experience. Studying here is 

definitely worth travelling to and 

from college every day for 45 

minutes each way.” 

“I am really proud of my 

achievements this year. I have 

competed in SkillBuild 2015 and 

cannot wait to attend the grand 

finals at the NEC in October. I was 

proud to represent Stockport 

College at the Greater Manchester 

Colleges Group competition too, 

coming second was a brilliant 

feeling. Rounding off the year by

North West final is the icing on the

When asked about his next 

steps in his career Luke replied: “I 

am looking forward to progressing

developing my skills to study at

Corrie Star 

Inspires New Talent

Coronation Street star Dean Fagan recently returned to 

Stockport College, to work with the Performing Arts 

students and staff. 

Dean, 26, who plays the 

role of car mechanic Luke 

Britton on the famous 

cobbles, gave a masterclass to 

students on how to pursue a 

career in acting. 

Originally from Withington, 

Dean had an unconventional start 

to his acting career. He initially 

planned to become a bricklayer, 

but happened to see a sign for 

Performing Arts instead, when he 

visited Stockport College. 

Dean says: “When I was at 

school I just followed what my 

mates were all doing so I was 

applied to be a bricklayer. When 

I got to college the lecturer I was 

supposed to see was on lunch, 

so I had an hour to spare and 

happened to see the sign for 

performing arts, saw what they 

were doing, and that was that!” 

“You don’t really know what 

you want at the age of 16, but you 

soon find what your passions are 

in life, and my passion is to create 

things and try and get people to 

see something they’ve never seen 

before. Stockport College helped 

me to achieve my ambitions; the 

college prepared me fully for 

university. I was able to develop 

my skills in Performing Arts having 

not studied drama at school.” 

During the masterclass Dean 

gave advice to Stockport College’s 

Performing Arts students. He 

spoke of the importance of 

‘finding you talent’ whether 

it’s acting, singing or dancing, 

realising your niche and pursuing 

it all the way. Dean believes that 

TV was more suited to his talents. 

Dean gave plenty of advice and 

guidance to Stockport College’s 

budding actors and actresses, he 

said: “The more experience you 

can get professionally the better. I 

didn’t get my first role in Corrie but 

5 years later I tried again and was 

successful. It’s important to listen 

to feedback, keep developing and 

never give up on your dream.” 

After leaving Stockport College, 

Dean progressed on to a BA 

(Hons) Theatre and Performance 

Practice course at the University 

of Salford. He worked in amateur 

dramatics after graduating in 

2011 with a 2:1 degree, until he 

got his big chance on Corrie in 

March 2014. When finding out 

he was successful at audition 

and was going to be a part of 

such a renowned British soap he 

explained: “My parents were more 

excited than me at first. I grew up 

with them watching the street, 

they couldn’t believe that I was 

going to be starring in it!” 

Dean and his University of 

Salford friends have recently 

set up a new theatre company, 

Perfectly Flawed, and showcased 

his first production last April at 

the Salford Arts Theatre. It was an 

adaptation of the John Fowles’ 

novel ‘The Collector’. 

Dean has been seen on screen 

as mechanic Luke in Corrie since 

March 2014. He has recently 

signed a one year contract 

extension. He recalls is first day on 

set at Coronation Street. “It was 

a bit embarrassing because on 

my first day playing a mechanic 

I managed to stall a Ford Capri 

right when everyone was on set 

watching and laughing.” 

They ended up having to 

push me into the shot, so that 

must have been a great first 

impression.” Dean ended his 

masterclass session with the 

college’s Performing Arts students 

by adding: “Everyone can make 

it no matter what your chosen 

career is. Life does sometimes get 

in the way, if you remain focused 

and seek the right opportunities 

you will be successful.”
