your academic life!
Know that I speak from experience when I say the
next few years will be fascinating and filled with new
happenings and changes that will help shape your
future. Personally, if there’s a decision I won’t live to
regret, it’s choosing Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) as the
place to further my studies.
NYP offers a wide variety of diploma courses to
choose from, spread across seven schools. No matter
which one you decide on, you will learn from the
finest staff and tutors who work hard to guide students
to achieve their goals. There will also be plenty of
unique opportunities, both locally and abroad, and
innovative initiatives for you to grow and mature into
an all-rounder.
But life in NYP is not only about chasing academic
results. With over 80 clubs and societies to join
and many top-notch sports and recreation facilities
available here, you’ll certainly be able to pursue your
passions while in NYP.

Martial Arts Club
Who’s it for? Active individuals who
enjoy keeping fit while developing
self-discipline
Roundhouse kick, upper cut, jab! Those
are just some of the combat techniques
you will pick up when you come and
sweat it out with Bei Quan Dao (a.k.a.
Chinese Kickboxing), which is part of
the Martial Arts Club. The Club includes
six other martial arts that members can
choose to learn – namely Judo, Kendo,
Rikido, Silat, Taekwondo and Wushu.
Adventure Club
Who’s it for? Adventurous individuals who
enjoy the thrill of challenges
Fancy an adventure like no other? With
NYP’s Adventure Club, you get to trek,
climb, kayak and even abseil down five
storeys in an inverted position! The club
organises an adventure race and a variety
of expeditions each year, including trips
to waterfalls and ice-covered mountains.
As part of their training, members learn
ropework, basic first-aid, camp craft, high
elements and other critical life skills.
Ultimate Frisbee
Who’s it for? Good team players keen on
a unique mixed-gender team sport
Be prepared to learn techniques
associated with basketball, soccer and
more when you join Ultimate Frisbee,
a graceful field sport played with a flying
disc. You can be sure you will be training
among the best, as NYP has been the
reigning champion of the POL-ITE
(Polytechnic-Institute of Technical
Education) Games Ultimate Frisbee

GEO Council
Who’s it for? Aspiring environmentalists who
are passionate about promoting green causes
Meet like-minded peers in your quest to
attain more knowledge about environmental
sustainability. Together, spread the sense of
responsibility of caring for nature and the
Earth through organising events such as
the NatGeo Explorer Programme and Tree
Planting Day, and taking part in eco-learning
trips and environmental programmes,
including the Bayer Young Environmental
Envoy Programme, a global partnership
between research-based enterprise Bayer and
the United Nations Environment Programme.
Mentoring Club
Who’s it for? Caring individuals who
want to make a difference in the lives of
those around them and be the change

Spend your Saturdays being a friend to
someone younger. In the past two years,
the Mentoring Club has touched the lives
of over 200 secondary school students
through weekly mentoring sessions,
tutoring and interacting with them, to
help them achieve their potential. It
also organises a variety of events that
promote personal development

SoundCard
Who’s it for? Talented individuals who are
passionate about singing and music
Feeling inspired after watching Glee? If
you dream of being part of a glee club,
look no further than SoundCard. This
group meets weekly to practise and
learn new techniques, bond through
singing, and improve on voice projection,
harmony and expressing emotions
through singing. Its members perform
regularly at campus lunchtime concerts,
and also organises an annual production.
K-Wave Club
Who’s it for? Hallyu fans, especially if
you can name the members of various
K-pop groups and know all their dances
Watched every episode of Running Man
and wish you, too, can play some of the
games they show? Well, you can, at the
K-Wave Club! Founded in 2014 by the
current club president, this CCA aims to
fire up interest in all things Korean, from
pop and traditional culture to food and
language, and enjoys strong support
from the South Korean embassy.
Chinese Orchestra
Who’s it for? Musicians who play Chinese
orchestral instruments and are keen to
perform genre-breaking music
Create pop music with traditional Chinese
musical instruments! Led by talented
conductor Mike Chiang (formerly with
Singapore Chinese Orchestra), this
award-winning 180-member orchestra
is well-known for its versatility across a
variety of music genres and has staged
four consecutive sold-out K-Pop and pop
music concerts at Esplanade – Theatres
on the Bay in the past three years.
Foreign Bodies
Who’s it for? Street dance enthusiasts
and aficionados
Hip hop, popping, locking, street jazz,
girls style, B-boy, house, waacking,
dancehall and more. Move to the beat of
these different street dance genres with
NYP’s School of Groove, Foreign Bodies.
An immensely popular CCA with more than
100 active members, it puts up dynamic
campus performances that always elicit
rousing cheers from the audience. Its annual
productions also always see a full house.

to confide in, as well as lecturers whom you can turn to
Ms Lee was very generous
with her time and was
constantly asking for updates on
our business projects regardless of

She often got us drinks and
biscuits, especially when she knew
we hadn’t had breakfast. These
little acts demonstrated how much
she truly cared. My class even
nicknamed Ms Lee ‘mama’ because

ASEAN Youth Camp
Kun Yao was one of five student
delegates from Singapore who
attended the 2015 ASEAN Youth
Camp, held in Nakhon Pathom
Province. The biennial camp
aims to strengthen bonds in
the ASEAN region through the
younger generation. Kun Yao
had the opportunity to engage
with peers from different
countries and experience the
art of Thai drawing and painting. Through the cross-cultural
interactions, he learnt to appreciate different languages and social
and cultural norms, and found it especially interesting to discover
that many of them had a keen interest in ‘Singlish’.
Though we all come from different ASEAN
countries, we share more similarities than I
had thought. It was a great time of learning
from one another.”

Experiencing
a foreign land
Student exchange programme
One of the highlights of Maybelline’s time at La Trobe University
was attending a student tutorial group session and participating
in a lively discussion on the different types of infections and their
treatments. She also visited hospitals in Melbourne to observe the
local healthcare settings and processes, as well as understand
more about the unique challenges they faced.
Every student should not miss out on going for
exchanges or study trips. The new experiences
you’ll have while studying in a different country and

Making a mark
for Singapore
WorldSkills International 2015
It was an eye-opening trip to the
sprawling city of São Paulo for Daniel
when he travelled there for the WorldSkills
International competition and was tasked
to set up a network system suitable for
small and medium enterprises. His two
years of training and hard work paid off
when he bagged a silver medal in the IT
Network Systems Administration category,
bringing glory to both NYP and Singapore.
It was an honour to have

many talented people from around

The Netherlands
Cross-cultural collaborations
Lions-Netherlands Exchange
While on the inaugural Lions-Netherlands Exchange — a
collaboration between NYP and the University of Applied
Sciences (UAS) in Leiden — Mardhiyah spent two action-packed
weeks going on excursions and field trips around the Netherlands
with a team of UAS students, including taking part in a molecular
cooking demonstration by a Michelin-starred chef. These
outings helped them in their challenge to develop a showcase
that highlighted a future smart city where technology is being
harnessed for food sustainability, such as the one being built in
the Dutch city of Almere. Working with her Dutch hosts on the
project brought out cultural, behavioural and even sleep pattern
differences, but it was an experience Mardhiyah would repeat in
a heartbeat.

WORKING
WITH THE BEST
As a student intern in interior design
at WOHA Architects, a multi award-winning architectural firm
whose portfolio includes Crowne Plaza Hotel and School of the
Arts, Hong Xuan was involved in the production of a number of
projects. She has seen a marked improvement in her ability to
wield software that is key to an architect’s job, after having to
use various software to create and beautify design drawings.
She also actively proposed the use of different designs and
material finishes for some projects.
The chance to be part of the team and get involved in design
projects from the start was particularly enriching and she believes
it will give her a competitive advantage when she joins the
working world in future.
Honing creativity ABROAD
Hong Kong was home for Joyce for three months when she
was doing her attachment with Carbon TV, a boutique motion
graphics and design studio. There, she experienced first-hand
the dynamic nature of an independent studio and how vital
teamwork was. It was also a chance to put what she had learnt in
NYP to practice under the guidance of Carbon’s creative director
Tereza Tan and art director Jacky Lo, and to be involved in the
filming of a channel ad for an actual client was an eye-opening
experience for her.
The internship has helped Joyce professionally and personally
as she gained a better understanding of the skills required to
excel in the digital media industry and where a career in this field
would take her.

Gitu spent six exciting months at Saint Pierre, a French fine
dining restaurant in Sentosa Cove, learning the ins and outs of
running a successful food & beverage (F&B) establishment under
the tutelage of prominent chef and restaurateur Emmanuel
Stroobant. She was involved in kitchen service and operations
at the front of house, where she picked up valuable tips on
food-and-wine pairings.
Gitu got a real taste of how hard F&B professionals work, but
it did not put her off the F&B industry. She is currently studying
for a bachelor’s degree in culinary arts at the Culinary Institute
of America and credits her work experience at Saint Pierre for
helping her to snag a place at the prestigious school.

Behind the numbers
There is no better place to learn the ropes of managing money
properly than at Singapore’s central bank, Monetary Authority
of Singapore (MAS), which holds the strings to the country’s
pockets. Adrian spent nearly three months as a vacation trainee
at MAS’ Financial Markets Development Department and enjoyed
the exposure to a vibrant work environment where decisions
and projects that are implemented have an actual impact on the
wider society.
Under the guidance of his warm and approachable senior
colleagues, Adrian also found himself improving on his written
and spoken communication.

My journey to a degree in nursing has
not been easy and I’m very grateful to
NYP for giving me a platform to shine and grow.
Initially, I had some fears about keeping up
academically as I had worked as a nurse for a
couple of years before enrolling in NYP, but my
wonderful and nurturing lecturers were very
encouraging. They drilled into me the need to
assess patients swiftly and effectively, and the
experiences they shared have been invaluable.

product design. I also gained
marketing and planning expertise. My
lecturers had worked in the industry

DIRECT POLY
ADMISSION
(DPA)
Secure your place in any of the five polytechnics even before you sit for your
‘O’ Level examinations through the DPA Exercise, if you have the interest and
capability for applied learning! In addition, your abilities and talents will also
be taken into consideration during the selection process.
Successful applicants will undergo eight weeks of fun and enriching
activities through the Nanyang Polytechnic Preparatory Programme
(PPP) where you will learn a relevant module that will give you a strong
foundation for your course of study, as well as a module of a different
discipline. At the end of the PPP, you may even be exempted from related
modules in your first year.

forward to as this is the exercise that will get you into your dream course!
An annual exercise by MOE, the JAE allows students to apply for admission

PROGRAMME
(PFP)
Get a head start in your poly experience after your ‘N’ Levels through the
PFP. Outstanding Sec 4 Normal (Academic) students can choose to apply for
the PFP, which is a foundation year that prepares you to enter one of the 46
full-time diploma courses offered at NYP.
At the end of the programme, you may even be admitted into the first year
of your pre-selected diploma course if you pass all the modules.

A Running Start with PFP
Through lectures, tutorials and project work in the Polytechnic Foundation
Programme (PFP), I learnt to study smart and understand various concepts,
rather than simply memorising them for exams. When I started Year 1, I was already
familiar with the academic system at NYP and could settle in quickly while my peers
were still adapting to their new environment. With PFP, I bypassed ‘O’ Levels, got
direct entry into my chosen diploma course and a head start in my studies.”

When to Apply?
Singaporean Citizens or Permanent Residents (SC/PR) who have registered
to sit for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level examinations in the year of
the DPA Exercise.
International students enrolled in government, government-aided and
independent schools in Singapore during the year of the application, and
who have registered to sit for the Singapore-Cambridge GCE ‘O’ Level
examinations in the year of the DPA Exercise.

admission criteria: (i) obtain a net ELR2B2 score of not more than 26 points

Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) students from MOE secondary schools who
have obtained an ELMAB3 (English, Math, Best 3 Subjects) raw aggregate score
of 11 points or better (excluding CCA bonus points) at the Singapore-Cambridge
GCE ‘N’ Level examinations.
Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) students who sat for Singapore-Cambridge
GCE ‘O’ Level examinations in a few subjects. These students are allowed to
combine their ‘N’ and ‘O’ Level examination results to compute their eligibility. If
a student takes the same subject at both ‘N’ and ‘O’ Levels, only the better grade
will be computed into his or her aggregate.
