A community of like-minded
interests
“What’s the big deal about Kanata North, anyway? I
can grow my business anywhere in Ottawa.”
We hear that question all the time from prospective
tenants. It’s a valid concern. People often perceive
Kanata as being out of the way, or hard to get into
– and out of – during rush hours. The reality is far
different, however. Kanata North is a premiere
destination for technology companies and their
employees, and is as accessible as any part of the
city. More than this, Kanata North is an established
hub for Ottawa’s high-tech community. It’s an
evolving ecosystem that hosts some of the most
important players in the technology world.
Our neighbourhood is home to industry-leading
companies that employ thousands of people
worldwide, as well as small start-ups that have their
eyes on similar growth results.
Kanata North is also a community of like-minded
people. This is where great talent works, lives and
plays. It’s the place where the professionals and
businesses that support our technology community
have set up shop with the particular view of
serving this community. And it’s a destination
where workers from all industries gather to
network on Tech Tuesdays, attend conferences at
the Brookstreet Hotel, or shoot a quick nine with
clients on the Marshes golf course. The parks and
businesses of KRP Properties are where most of
the action happens in Kanata North. Plan to attend
one of our community events. You’ll see why our
neighbourhood is so much greater than the sum of
its parts.

KRP Properties Wins the Best Ottawa
Business Award for their Sustainability
Plan
KRP Properties is a proud recipiant of the Best
Ottawa Business award in the Sustainability category!
The Best Ottawa Business Awards (BOBs) are the evolution
of a 20-year-old awards program organized by the Ottawa
Chamber of Commerce and Ottawa Business Journal.
These awards seek to recognize the most successful and
innovative companies and business leaders who are driving
economic growth and prosperity in the nation’s capital.
Each year, dozens of companies from all sectors are
nominated for their contributions to Ottawa’s vibrant
business scene. Recipients are linked by their passion
for doing business in Ottawa. 2015 categories are:
Waste Audit Results
KRP has undertaken waste audits on 10 of its largest
properties this summer. What this process revealed
is our efforts to improve our waste diversion are really
paying off! This year we have implemented new and
improved standardized recycling programs for mixed
paper, paper towels, cardboard, mixed recyclable
containers, batteries, electronics, toner cartridges
and light tubes. We have partnered with Cascades
Recovery to standardize the recycling programs at
all KRP facilities and this year have added batteries,
electronics, toners and wood pallets into our collection
network. KRP’s goal is to have all of our buildings
meet and exceed the provincial diversion target of
60%, and we are well on our way! The results of
a composting pilot we are undertaking will inform
our next steps in terms of expanding food waste
composting across the portfolio.

Energy Reduction Efforts at 411 Legget
A new Building Automation System was installed at
411 Legget. Today, buildings and building automation
systems are critical assets of any business. An
effective BAS delivers workplace comfort and energy
savings by controlling HVAC, lighting, central plant
and critical processes. KRP’s new software integrates
environmental, energy, security and safety systems
into powerful management tools. This web-based
technology provides building managers with global
access to building performance information – any place
at any time. This powerful tool offers an intuitive user
interface and powerful control features, allowing our
Building Operator a powerful tool to minimize energy
consumption, maximize comfort and achieve sustainable
building operations. All building management functions
can be accessed online through a browser to allow:
• The setting and changing of schedules for lighting,
heating and cooling depending on tenant requirements
and building occupancy;
• Adjusting setpoints and other control properties;
• The trending of all building conditions including energy
and comfort, to allow adjustments to happen in real
time;
• To run custom reports on energy usage and 100much
more.
determine what areas of the building could be modified
to minimize the amount of wasted energy.
In addition, an LED lighting retrofit was undertaken
saving 238,782 kwh of electricity in just three short
months. This represents enough electricity to power
300 homes for a month. KRP is engaged in several
energy saving projects across the portfolio, so stay
tuned for more results as they come in!

ALL STAR BUILDING TECHNICIANS
How long have you been working for KRP
Properties?
10 years.
Describe your roll.
I am the Maintenance Supervisor that manages a team
of 9 Building Technicians that look after 22 buildings
campus wide.
What has been your most memorable moment at
KRP Properties?
Finding a baby deer early one morning that had just
been born at the rear of 2500 Solandt Road and then
watching it go off with its mom across the golf course.
What would you like to tell all KRP tenants that
they might not already know about KRP Building
Technicians?
That they are a hardworking dedicated team that
prides themselves on providing exceptional customer
service to all the tenants and that they are a great
bunch of guys to work with.
What do you consider your greatest
achievement?
Being a husband, father and grandfather.
If you were to die and come back as a person or a
thing, what would it be?
A cat as they always get the best seat in the house and
sleep all day.
If you had an “Employee of the Year” award to
give out, who would you give it to?
The KRP Maintenance team as they all deserve it.
Which historical figure do you most identify with?
Sir Winston Churchill.
Who are your heroes in real life?
People who do a lot of charity and volunteer work for
no pay or recognition but solely for the purpose of
wanting to help people.
What is your idea of perfect happiness?
Sitting on the beach in Spain with my family watching
the sun set.
Which living person do you most admire?
My niece Kelsey who is 24 years old and has Cystic
Fibrosis for which there is no cure. She has spent more
time in hospitals and had more medical procedures in
her 24 years than I will if I live to be a 100 and battles
every day to just breathe.
On what occasion do you lie?
When people ask me my golf score.
Which words or phrases do you most overuse?
Being English I use the words mate, bloke and geezer’
a lot when referring to a man and one phrase I use is
“That’s as much use as a chocolate tea pot”.

Simple to use. More Power Than You Can
Imagine.
Qlik (www.qlik.com) has come a long way since it was
founded in Sweden in 1993. Since its breakthrough in
the early 2000s, Qlik’s success has placed the company
among the top three of America’s fastest-growing tech
companies, in the same rank as Apple and LinkedIn. Just
recently, the company was named top ten in the world on
Forbes’ Most Innovative Growth Companies List. Now a
leader in visual analytics, the company currently employs
more than 2,400 people, has over 1,700 partners
worldwide, as well as a vast user base of 37,000 customers
across 105 countries. In fact, four of the five largest
global retail and wholesale companies and all five of the
five largest global pharmaceutical companies use Qlik.
Qlik’s success can, in large part, be attributed to the
extraordinary talent of the company’s engineering and
product development team. To accommodate the
company’s success and attract the best talent in the
world, the company has opened a new office within
KRP Properties with the mission of bringing its platform
and solutions to the Cloud.
Furniture Bank is a volunteer driven program of
Matthew House Ottawa, a faith based organization
operating two services - Matthew House Ottawa:
Refugee Services and Furniture Bank.
Furniture bank began in 2008, operating from a
founding member’s home to assist refugees seeking
shelter in Canada after the devastating earthquake in
Haiti. In 2011 and in partnership with KRP Properties,
the organization moved into its current warehouse
located at 340 Legget Drive, and has become
one of Ottawa’s leading providers of free, quality
used furniture and household goods to Ottawa’s
marginalized population including refugees, those
transitioning from institutions, half-way houses,
and shelters, along with others who have lost their
possessions. At present, Furniture Bank helps
between 15 to 20 families and individuals per week.
Furniture Bank’s goals are to expand its operation
through the generosity of property owners to provide
more warehouse space in locations accessible to the
communities it serves.
Together, with the Ottawa community, Furniture
Bank can continue to provide this important service
and reach more of those who need help. Visit:

A NOTE FROM THE KANATA FOOD CUPBOARD
Volunteers needed for Christmas Deliveries
Last year, the Kanata Food Cupboard delivered food and
Christmas gifts to over 400 families in Kanata. We couldn’t
have achieved this record number of deliveries without
the assistance of volunteers and tenants alike. To all who
graciously donated their time last year - thank you.
This year, we are planning for another busy Christmas.
On December 17 and December 19, starting late morning,
we are looking for adult volunteers to deliver Christmas
hampers to Kanata families in need. Volunteers are
asked to use their own vehicles when making deliveries
and are asked to work in pairs (you will be teamed up with
another volunteer if you are volunteering on your own).
OPERATION
CHRISTMAS CHILD
With your generous help, we were
able to collect 118 shoebox gifts
for children in need this Holiday
season!
Thank you to all who participated
in this initiative.
For more information, visit:
www.operationchristmaschild.ca
We appreciate any time you are able to give on any of
those two days.
If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the
volunteer information form on the Kanata Food Cupboard
website and note that you are specifically interested in
Christmas hamper deliveries. A link to the form is here:
http://kanatafoodcupboard.ca/volunteer-intake.
The Kanata Food Cupboard is able to provide food
assistance to Kanata families throughout the year
because of volunteers like you. Thank you for your support.
