LETTER FROM THE CHAIR
I am pleased to present the Reach Out and Read Annual Report
for 2015. This report is a celebration of an exciting year of
growth for Reach Out and Read, and my first message to you,
as Chair of the National Board, is to thank you for being part
of the Reach Out and Read community and helping us to give
more young children a better start to life.
Last year ended with much excitement, as the American
Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) issued a landmark policy statement
promoting literacy as “an essential component of pediatric
primary care.” Significantly, this statement realized a long-term
aim of Reach Out and Read to integrate early literacy promotion
as a routine practice in well-child checkups.

Following on from that, we have continued to give medical providers the information and tools
they need to encourage families to read aloud to their infants, toddlers, and preschoolers. I am
pleased to report that 321 additional sites, including 1477 providers, have signed up for the
Reach Out and Read program this year, giving us an annual growth rate of 5%!
This year has also ended on a high note! I am particularly pleased to report some groundbreaking
research funded in part by Reach Out and Read through our Young Investigator Award Program.
In May, Dr. John Hutton, from Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, generated interest
in his findings at the Pediatric Academic Societies Conference. In a study using imaging of young
children’s brains he showed for the first time that early reading is associated with foundational
brain activity that is critical for subsequent reading skills. This is compelling neuroscientific
support for the important role interactive reading has in the development of young children.
I hope that you will enjoy reading about our initiatives to expand our reach and effectiveness—
how our program now officially includes babies from birth through 6 months, that we are piloting
an early math component, and that we are developing strategic partnerships that increase the
impact of our work. However, the essence of Reach Out and Read remains the same. I frequently
hear stories from my colleagues like that of single Mom Rosa and 16-month-old Calvin on page
2—about how Reach Out and Read is making a difference for families struggling on a low income.
None of this would be possible without your support, for which we are truly grateful. We have more
work to do to reach more children and families, and look forward to our continued partnership
to help making reading aloud for all families a reality.

REACH OUT AND READ
IS A PATH TO OPPORTUNITY
Reach Out and Read was thrilled to be featured in A Path Appears (2014), by New York Times
journalists and Pulitzer Prizewinners Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. We are included
as one of a number of organizations “spreading opportunity so that a person’s prospects
depend less on the lottery of birth.”
Of Reach Out and Read specifically, Kristof and WuDunn write “Getting a doctor to hand out
books and prescribe reading aloud is an absurdly simple and cheap intervention,
yet it has an astonishing impact,” and they focus on the story of Rosa.
A PATH TO OPPORTUNITY
Rosa’s Story

Rosa is a nineteen-year-old single Mom with a sixteen-month-old son, Calvin. She grew up
eating in soup kitchens and living in shelters for the homeless, and gave birth to Calvin on
high school graduation day.

Like many parents, Rosa wants to do the best for her son but did not experience how to
care for her child as she grew up. Without help, it is likely that Calvin would start school
developmentally behind his peers, and probably never catch up.
Fortunately, Rosa’s pediatrician, Gabriella Muscolo, is a Reach Out and Read doctor. Gabriella
has explained to Rosa, and thousands of other new parents, that cuddling and reading aloud
to infants and toddlers is one of the best ways of fostering early brain development that is
crucial for success in life.
At more than 10 pediatric checkups from infancy, Rosa will learn about how to talk, sing, read
to, and connect with Calvin—and Calvin will take home a new book that will prompt them
to read together often. Rosa now says “ Reading to my son will make a difference in how he
learns and how he does in school. I want to do that for him.” Rosa knows how to give him a
path to opportunity.

REACH OUT AND READ INCLUDES
SERVING CHILDREN STARTING IN
INFANCY TO SIX MONTHS
Right from birth babies are looking, listening and learning,
So find, and enjoy, those everyday moments when you can
talk, sing, read and play with your baby every day.
Advances in our understanding of early childhood development over the last 25 years have
shown that it is essential to encourage parents to engage with their infants right from the
early days.
In June, 2015, Reach Out and Read Medical Advisors urged our network of doctors to start
discussing with parents the importance of talking, singing, reading and playing with their
babies as early as the newborn visit. This brings us into alignment with the American Academy
of Pediatrics policy statement, written by Reach Out and Read doctors Pam High and Perri
Klass, that recommends pediatric providers promote reading aloud to children starting in
infancy.
EXPANDING OUR PROGRAM
A generous grant from the Kenneth Rainin Foundation is supporting our efforts to reach more
children, starting in the earliest days of life.

developmentally appropriate, supportive
ways, helping parents develop the
responsive, positive, language-rich
interactions, which should surround
babies from the very beginning.
DEVELOPING
AND PILOTING
OUR EARLY MATH
INITIATIVE
As with early literacy, many parents do
not realize the powerful impact that early
exposure to math concepts can have on their
children’s academic futures. By incorporating
early math concepts into our researchbased
intervention, we are providing a new
approach for doctors to support parents
in helping their children develop the
foundational math and pre-reading concepts
needed for academic success.
With the support of the Heising-Simons
Foundation, this year we developed and
piloted our Early Math Initiative. Pediatricians
are introducing early math themes at
medical checkups, using children’s books as
a unique, approachable, and effective tool.

their children, despite barriers
such as a lack of formal
education and not being fluent
in English.

LIBRARIES AND MUSEUMS
Libraries and museums are natural partners in our aim to
meet the needs of America’s youngest children and their caregivers.
Encouraging families to make use of local libraries and museums,
and spend time enjoying library and museum activities, extends
the effectiveness of our program.
This year, Reach Out and
Read developed partnerships
with different sectors of the
community to expand our reach
and have a collective impact on
the lives of young children.
In January, we were delighted to welcome two new national board members
associated with libraries, Susan Hildreth, who served as Director of the Institute of
Museum and Library Services (IMLS) 2011-15, and Dipesh Navsaria, a one-of-a-kind primary
care pediatrician, with degrees in public health and children’s librarianship. Both Susan and
Dipesh have spearheaded our partnership with museums and libraries, culminating in a
yearlong project, Prescription for Success, funded by the IMLS. This project is designed to
support local collaborations between libraries, museums and Reach Out and Read program
sites.
THE POWER OF PARTNERSHIPS
AMERICAN ACADEMY OF
PEDIATRICS, SCHOLASTIC INC.
AND TOO SMALL TO FAIL
A national partnership between Reach Out and Read, the
American Academy of Pediatrics, Scholastic Inc. and Too
Small to Fail is taking a multi-pronged approach to ensure that
medical caregivers have the information, tools and books they
need to help families make reading aloud with their infants and toddlers
a daily practice.
As part of this venture, Scholastic Inc. donated 500,000 books that were distributed to young children
at Reach Out and Read sites across the nation. In many cases this was the first book the family has ever
owned, and will become a much-treasured story, as well as a means of helping with early literacy skills
and fostering healthy brain development.
Our patients are so thrilled with taking books home!
They have no idea that their parents barely have the
money to purchase food, and that a book purchase
is not even an option.

SAVE THE CHILDREN
In 2015, we embarked on an exciting joint
initiative with Save the Children funded
by a grant from the Department of
Education’s Innovative Approaches to
Literacy Program. The two-year Building
Child-Centered Communities in Rural America
project brings together Reach Out and Read and
Save the Children’s home visiting program to
support and foster children’s education and
well-being in rural, low-income communities in
Arizona, Colorado, Kentucky and South Carolina.
YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD PROGRAM
The efficacy and impact of the Reach Out and Read program is supported by an
extensive body of published scientific and medical research. As a commitment to
continued research into primary care strategies that support children at risk of falling
behind, Reach Out and Read funds the Young Investigator Award Program through the
Academic Pediatric Association.
In May 2015, groundbreaking research from one of our Young Investigator Awardees
generated significant interest at the Pediatric Academic Societies conference. Dr.
John Hutton presented results of his study using MRI imaging of young children’s
brains to show that reading aloud is associated with differences in brain activity that
supports early reading skills. This is the first direct evidence that reading aloud fosters
early brain development.

FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Dear Reach Out and Read Friends,
During this year, I had the opportunity to meet and speak with many of you and was
consistently struck by your passion for, and commitment to the program. Your support
has brought us a long way since our first program in 1989, and, as you have read in
this report, continues to help us grow and bring the power of books and reading aloud
to young children.
Demand for Reach Out and Read is stronger than ever. Doctors tell us that they are
repeatedly faced with parents who want to do the best for their children, but aren’t
aware that reading aloud to them from the earliest days of life is one of the most
effective, and most fun, activities they can do together. Perhaps they did not experience
being read to as they grew up. Others are struggling to make ends meet and new
children’s books aren’t in the household budget.
Together we are changing that, one book, one doctor, one family at a time.
Reading aloud is still one of the most effective ways of changing the trajectory of a
child’s life. The simple act of cuddling a child and sharing a picture book together
achieves many goals – language development, associating words with pictures, understanding the connection between
letters and words, sound and meaning. These skills are the foundations for learning to read. But it’s the joint attention,
the minutes shared together, listening to a loved one’s voice, the safety and comfort of being held while reading a book
together—this is what Reach Out and Read is all about.
We are excited about the coming year, and have ambitious plans to support our continued growth, including:
• Developing new training materials to best support our network of more than 21,500 medical providers
delivering the program
• Implementing a Technology Innovation Project to inform program development and strengthen partnerships
• Building on early brain research through our Young Investigator Award program to continue to demonstrate
and improve program effectiveness
• Integrating Reach Out and Read as part of early childhood systems nationally and at the state level
Accomplishing these plans will help us reach more families so that one day all children will know what it feels like to
look at beautiful illustrations, listen to a story, and escape into a book in the arms of a parent or family member who
wants to give them the best start in life.
