FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR<br />
Dear Reach Out and Read Friends,<br />
During this year, I had the opportunity to meet and speak with many of you and was<br />
consistently struck by your passion for, and commitment to the program. Your support<br />
has brought us a long way since our first program in 1989, and, as you have read in<br />
this report, continues to help us grow and bring the power of books and reading aloud<br />
to young children.<br />
Demand for Reach Out and Read is stronger than ever. Doctors tell us that they are<br />
repeatedly faced with parents who want to do the best for their children, but aren’t<br />
aware that reading aloud to them from the earliest days of life is one of the most<br />
effective, and most fun, activities they can do together. Perhaps they did not experience<br />
being read to as they grew up. Others are struggling to make ends meet and new<br />
children’s books aren’t in the household budget.<br />
Together we are changing that, one book, one doctor, one family at a time.<br />
Reading aloud is still one of the most effective ways of changing the trajectory of a<br />
child’s life. The simple act of cuddling a child and sharing a picture book together<br />
achieves many goals – language development, associating words with pictures, understanding the connection between<br />
letters and words, sound and meaning. These skills are the foundations for learning to read. But it’s the joint attention,<br />
the minutes shared together, listening to a loved one’s voice, the safety and comfort of being held while reading a book<br />
together—this is what Reach Out and Read is all about.<br />
We are excited about the coming year, and have ambitious plans to support our continued growth, including:<br />
• Developing new training materials to best support our network of more than 21,500 medical providers<br />
delivering the program<br />
• Implementing a Technology Innovation Project to inform program development and strengthen partnerships<br />
• Building on early brain research through our Young Investigator Award program to continue to demonstrate<br />
and improve program effectiveness<br />
• Integrating Reach Out and Read as part of early childhood systems nationally and at the state level<br />
Accomplishing these plans will help us reach more families so that one day all children will know what it feels like to<br />
look at beautiful illustrations, listen to a story, and escape into a book in the arms of a parent or family member who<br />
wants to give them the best start in life.<br />
