The Story

When Nelson Mandela spoke at the International AIDS Conference in 2000 in

South Africa, no one knew what the future held for the epidemic. 15 years

later, the global AIDS response has been transformed. We have met our goal of

reaching 15 million people with treatment, yet we’re still less than half way

there. Many of the obstacles that have impeded effective HIV prevention and

treatment still exist today – Over 1 million people die every year of AIDS and

37 million people are still living with HIV.

First convened during the peak of the AIDS epidemic in 1985, the International

AIDS Conference plays a key role in driving forward the HIV response as the

global platform for HIV/AIDS. It is the largest conference on any global health

or development issue in the world and continues to be a unique forum for the

intersection of science, advocacy, and human rights. The next International

AIDS Conference (AIDS 2016) will return back to Durban, South Africa from 18-

22 July 2016 to focus on the next phase of response.

Overview

1 December 2015 marks World AIDS Day. A day of worldwide solidarity to

unite in the fight against HIV. On this day registration opens for the 21 st

International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2016).

Starting on 1 December 2015 and continuing on through 22 July 2016,

AIDS 2016 will serve as the advocacy platform for the HIV response,

representing the voices from around the world working towards a shared goal

– the end of AIDS.

With a new set of global targets for 2030, it is more important than ever to

galvanize support around this day with an eye towards the future --

Envisioning the world we want to have in the next 15 years.

Help spread the word and join the movement starting 1 December 2015.
