WELCOME SODEXO 

Advent Christian Village has been ministering 

to senior adults, families with special needs, 

and children for more than 100 years. Over 

the century, many things have changed, including 

how food is prepared and served. Where ACV used 

to maintain its own farm with crops and animals, and 

groups of women and children would labor for hours 

to prepare each home cooked meal, Advent Christian 

Village now employs cooks and chefs to work in 

commercial-grade kitchens. 

This summer, Advent Christian Village entered 

into a partnership with Sodexo Quality of Life 

Services. Sodexo’s challenge: to unify all of ACV’s 

dining services and to enhance both the quality and 

healthiness of the food choices campus wide. 

Sodexo began in the mid-1700s in France when 

a father and son would supply ships anchored off the 

coast with items they purchased in town and rowed 

out to the ships. Today, Sodexo serves 75 million 

consumers in 15 countries. It is involved in the health 

care industry, the military, on campuses (high school 

and college), in corporations and businesses, and in 

industry. It provides environmental services, biomedical 

technology, labor management, and food service, 

their largest area. 

Sodexo is excited to now be an instrument to 

further the mission of Advent Christian Village. 

Sodexo employee, General Manager Robbie Joynt, has 

relocated to Suwannee County and is taking the lead in 

the dining services restructuring. Two ACV employees 

were also hired by Sodexo and remain in leadership 

roles in ACV dining services, but as Sodexo employees. 

Robbie says some of his initial goals include 

improving the overall quality of food service everywhere 

at Advent Christian Village and to improve 

the quality of life at ACV, but especially at Good 

Samaritan Center skilled nursing community. One way 

this will be accomplished is with CATs, a group of 

employees and ACV members who will get together 

as a Culinary Advisement Team — a sort of ongoing 

focus group. 

Sodexo was recommended to Advent Christian 

Village by LeadingAge, of which Sodexo is a gold 

partner. ACV is a member of LeadingAge and benefits 

from its efforts to make America “Expanding the 

World of Possibilities for Aging” through education, 

advocacy, and applied research. Even though ACV is 

Suwannee County’s second-largest private employer, 

its campus of over 700 members and nearly 500 

employees is relatively small compared to Robbie’s 

last Sodexo position: helping manage the food 

service at the six hospitals and various care 

centers within the Jackson Health System in 

Miami. 

Robbie’s primary focus right now is on 

Good Samaritan Center, but Sodexo has 

plans to also develop food service 

at Rumph Dining Room, Camp 

Suwannee and the Village Café. 

Because of Sodexo’s long history 

and global presence, there are a 

lot of programs which 

will be implemented 

to help ACV make 

a larger impact in 

Suwannee County.

Members Move Into Taylor Commons 

PHASE ONE OF ADVENT CHRISTIAN VILLAGE’S NEWEST NEIGHBORHOOD IS COMPLETE 

Oct. 15, 2013, the new Master 

Development Plan was unveiled. The 

plan called for several new living options 

— a new neighborhood of rental homes now 

named Taylor Commons, a new manufactured 

home neighborhood, the addition of condominiums 

to the River Woods neighborhood, 

and new assisted living buildings — as well as 

other improvements to Advent Christian Village. 

From the Master Development Plan, the 100th 

Anniversary Capital Campaign was launched in 

order to garner support for the initial projects 

within the plan. 

The first new project to enter the construction 

phase was Taylor Commons. Before this project, 

a row of cinder block homes were located along 

Dowling Park Drive across from the Phillips 

Center and the Village Square; the oldest residences 

still standing on campus. They needed 

renovation, but the floor plans of the older apartments 

were no longer appealing to potential ACV 

members. The decision was made to raze the old 

structures and to build new homes in their place. 

We are excited to announce that the first 

two Taylor Commons buildings — Lawrence 

House, a two-story building containing eight 

one-story apartments, and McGranahan Place, a 

single-story complex of four apartments — have 

been completed and are occupied. The buildings 

are beautiful and a welcome addition to Advent 

Christian Village’s attractive grounds. 

McGranahan Place was completed first and 

an open house was held in May. Each home 

features two bedrooms, two full bathrooms, an 

attached garage, a patio, and an open floor plan.

Lawrence House’s first resident, Betty Copeland, 

moved into her brand new apartment in August. 

Betty is Bernie Copeland’s sister-in-law. Bernie 

was a generous supporter of Advent Christian 

Village for years, and several buildings on campus 

bear his name. 

The final Taylor Commons project that was 

completed in Phase I is Cleo’s Meeting House, a 

community building. The building contains the 

neighborhood’s post office boxes, a large meeting 

room, and some smaller rooms surrounding an 

open gathering space. ACV’s Residency Services 

department will initially make use of the building 

to market the new neighborhood, but its ultimate 

goal is to serve as a gathering place for the 

neighborhood. 

Next, three more single-story complexes, each 

containing six homes, will be built. The entire 

neighborhood is scheduled for completion by the 

end of 2018. When complete, the new neighborhood 

will include 30 homes where there were 

originally only 12.

Village Church Renovated 

The Village Church underwent renovations as part of the 

Master Development Plan unveiled in 2013. Construction began 

in early July and was completed early in November. The two 

main goals of the construction were to enclose the courtyard 

between Bixler Chapel and the church offices, and to improve the 

layout of the church offices (see floor plan, below). 

A: The outdoor baptismal pool and vegetation were 

removed from the old courtyard. B: Concrete was poured, a 

roof was added, and interior windows were closed in. C: Big

Burning the Mortgage 

A celebration was held Oct. 1 at Twice Nice Furniture 

& More (one of Advent Christian Village’s volunteeroperated 

retail shops) to “burn the mortgage.” Ever since its 

opening, the proceeds of Twice Nice Furniture & More have 

gone to both the benevolent fund and to pay off an “internal 

mortgage” covering the cost to build the building. The shop 

was built eight years ago and not only showcases items to be 

sold, but also houses the sorting area for all items donated 

to ACV. Through the many donations given to be sold at 

the shop and the hard work of the volunteers, the mortgage 

has now been paid off. The most exciting part is that more 

funds will now go into the benevolent fund.

Artists of Dementia Care: Improving the 

Quality of Life at Good Samaritan Center 

The state of Florida requires that Advent 

Christian Village employees working directly 

with members at Good Samaritan Center obtain 

a certain number of hours of training relating to 

Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. ACV 

gladly fulfills that obligation, but also goes a step 

further. 

“A number of years ago,” explains Good 

Samaritan Center Administrator Keri Hilliard, 

“we made the decision that our program and our 

residents deserve the very best care, and so we 

invest quite a bit of time in additional training.” 

According to Keri, GSC’s Director of 

Nursing Judy Crager developed a 12-week 

program that all GSC staff members are required 

to complete. “It’s a very intensive training 

program on dementia and Alzheimer’s care called 

‘The Art of Dementia Care’,” says Keri. “Once 

an employee goes through that program and 

graduates, they become an Artist of Dementia 

Care.” The program is based on the book, The 

Art of Dementia Care by Daniel Kuhn and Jane 

Verity. 

Keri went on to say that the program has 

meant a lot to those who have graduated. “It 

changes how employees think about people with 

Alzheimer’s disease and what they go through,” 

said Keri. “I think it’s remarkable. Even after 

they’ve been through the initial training, the 

change in [their] attitude and thought process 

after they go through this course [is dramatic.]” 

And even though it’s a strain on the staff to 

put each employee through the 12-week course, 

Keri says “the investment is absolutely worth it.”

Dementia Care. The interview talks about the Artist of 

Dementia Care training and one of the beneficiaries of the

many Good Samaritan Center employees who have 

graduated from The Art of Dementia Care, a 12-week 

course developed by GSC’s Director of Nursing Judy 

Crager (far right in bottom photo), based on the book, 

The Art of Dementia Care (pictured above), earning 

them all the distinction of being Artists of Dementia 

Care. 


Live! at Dowling Park 2014-15 Season 

For 28 years, Advent Christian Village has hosted a variety of great acts in Suwannee County, 

bringing arts and entertainment to a part of the country where most would not expect it. The Live! at 

Dowling Park 2015-16 Artist Series season is bringing another great mix of entertainers to Dowling Park: 

nine engaging acts over as many months.

Artist 

The season began on Aug. 21 with the second 

annual Young Musicians Concert. This year, the 

concert featured two young Suwannee County residents: 

Lani Clark and Erik Swart. Lani is no stranger 

to ACV; she has sung here many times. Erik was a 

new face in Dowling Park and his vocal performance 

was well received. Lani accompanied herself on the 

piano and Erik is an extremely talented guitar player. 

The second concert was an outstanding musical 

performance by Paul Saik, a former opera singer 

turned Christian solo artist, whose artistry on the 

piano is just as impressive as his singing. 

The third concert of the season was the Kelly/ 

Scott Jazz Sextet, a group of internationally-known 

jazz musicians.

Pipes, Songs & Stories 

Sat., Nov. 21, 2015, 7 p.m. • Bixler Chapel 

Robin Hendrickson brings music alive on a variety 

of small pipes and the Great Highland bagpipe. 

Robin has been playing for nearly 20 years. He 

believes that “Piping is mostly madness with a touch 

of magic,” and claims that “The bagpipe is not just 

an instrument, but 700 years of history.” 

Tim Zimmerman & The King’s Brass 

Sat., Dec. 19, 2015, 7 p.m. & 

Sun., Dec. 20, 2015, 3 p.m. 

The Village Church 

Advent Christian Village is pleased to present Tim 

Zimmerman and The King’s Brass in a highly-anticipated, 

two-day concert experience of music and 

ministry. The program will include a community choir 

of singers from The Village Church, the Suwannee 

County community, and the Suwannee Elementary 

3rd Grade Chorus — a possible 100-voice intergenerational 

choir led by The King’s Brass in celebration 

of Emmanuel, God with us. Admission is free, but 

seats must be reserved in advance. 

Bethune-Cookman Univ. Concert Chorale 

Sat., Jan. 16, 2016, 7 p.m. • The Village Church 

Started in 1904, the Concert Chorale of Bethune- 

Cookman University in Daytona, Florida, has 

become known as an “Ambassador of Good Will” 

that has travelled more than half a million miles and 

visited five foreign countries. The group performs 

a wide range of choral works from the last three 

centuries. 

Glenn Miller Orchestra 

Mon., Feb. 1, 7 p.m. • The Village Church 

Just as it was in the legendary Glenn Miller’s day, the 

Glenn Miller Orchestra is the most sought-after big 

band in the world today. The 18-member ensemble 

plays not only many of the original Miller arrangements 

both from the civilian band and the Army Air 

Force Band, it also plays some more modern selections 

arranged and performed in the Miller style and 

sound. 

Valdosta Symphony Orchestra 

Sun., March 6, 2 p.m. • The Village Church 

The Valdosta Symphony Orchestra’s membership is 

a unique blend of Valdosta State University resident 

artist-faculty, students studying professional music 

disciplines, talented community performers, and 

carefully selected professionals. The orchestra has 

become an important part of the cultural life of the 

entire region. 

Presidio Brass 

Sat., April 9, 2016, 7 p.m. • The Village Church 

Since forming in 2006, Presidio Brass has rocketed 

to success as the face of a bold new generation in 

brass entertainment. By combining a brass quintet, 

piano and percussion instruments with fresh, original 

arrangements, their unique sound has become 

a trademark for the ensemble from San Diego, 

California, captivating audiences the world over.

Distinguished at ACV, Distinguished at FSU 

J. Pomeroy Carter recently received an invitation 

from Dr. James Clark, Dean and Professor of the 

College of Social Work at Florida State University, 

telling him he would be honored at an awards dinner 

to be held at the University. It comes as no surprise 

to those who have had much dealing with Advent 

Christian Village that Pomeroy would be recognized 

and honored. Pomeroy has worked with and been a 

leader at ACV since as early as the late 1950s when he 

visited during his summer vacations while attending 

Aurora University in Illinois. His father, M.A. Carter, 

was the resident manager, and ACV’s Board recognized 

Pomeroy’s potential early on and asked him to serve as 

his father’s assistant when he graduated from Aurora. 

Pomeroy saw God’s leading and he accepted. He also 

accepted a full scholarship from the Florida Licensing 

Supervisor of Children’s Institutions to earn his master 

of social work degree from FSU. In 1960, Pomeroy 

took the reins from his father and became ACV’s first 

President. 

At the dinner honoring distinguished alumni on 

Sept. 10, Pomeroy was presented a plaque which 

reads, “Florida State University College of Social 

Work is proud to present J. Pomeroy Carter with the 

Distinguished Emeritus Alumni Award in recognition 

of his many notable contributions advancing the social 

work profession and society.” 

In presenting the plaque, Dr. Clark pointed out 

that Pomeroy graduated from FSU with his MSW in 

1960. He spent his career at Advent Christian Village, 

where he was instrumental in developing ACV and 

increasing the number of residents from about 60 in

1960 to around 700 at his retirement in 1995. 

Upon his retirement from ACV, Pomeroy was 

described as Seeker of the Vision and Keeper of the 

Dream. He was a visionary who never lost sight 

of the mission of the Advent Christian Home. His 

commitment to making retirement a time of meaning 

and fulfillment helped to shape the community as it 

is today. His fingerprints and influence are indelibly 

etched on the ministry of Advent Christian Village.

Honoring Faithful Supporters 

One of the Guiding Principles of 

Advent Christian Village states, 

“Our benefactors who help provide 

comprehensive Village ministries shall 

be recognized with thanksgiving for 

their generosity and stewardship.” Advent Christian 

Village has been doing just that even before the guiding 

principles were put into writing. One way benefactors 

are recognized is through the Village Builders’ Guild. 

Members of the Village Builders’ Guild are those 

whose level of cumulative giving to ACV has reached 

$5,000 or more. Each year an appreciation banquet is 

held, and new members — or those who have reached 

new levels of giving — are honored. Those who give so 

generously to the ministries of ACV truly become the 

hands that reach out to those in need. 

Also honored are new inductees to the Perpetual 

Builders’ Guild. These are individuals who have given 

deferred gifts, such as bequests, annuities, charitable 

remainder trusts, life estate agreements and life insurance.
