CLASS OF 2018 SCHOLARSHIP & SERVICE Our sophomore class is contributing to the Duke community through fabulous service-based and academic projects. We’re so proud to see these leading women shining in Theta and beyond.
Sophomore Service Projects This past summer, Taylor Panzer worked as the Individualized Education Plan coordinator at Plantersville Summer Academy in Georgetown, South Carolina. At this internship, Taylor tutored K-9 students in math and reading and help prepare them for the upcoming school year. At Duke, Taylor currently serves as the Co-President for Duke’s chapter of Project Sunshine, a service organization that aims to “bring sunshine” to long-term patients at Duke Children’s Hospital. Project Sunshine volunteers focus on improving these kids’ daily lives by doing arts and crafts, playing games, and making ice cream sundaes, for example. Taylor plans and coordinates the group’s weekly visits to the children’s hospital, as well as campus-wide programs like fundraisers and “Sending Sunshine” events where anyone at Duke can send a card to send to a child at the Duke hospital. Taylor also volunteers as a tutor for children living at a local transitional house for homeless families and she works as a research assistant in a psychiatry lab that studies the impact of alcohol on adolescent brain development. Through all of her work with children and mental health, Taylor hopes to attend medical school and eventually become a child psychiatrist. For the past year and a half, Julia Berry has volunteered as an after-school tutor for children who are living at the Genesis Home in Durham, a transitional living facility for homeless families. This year, she began volunteering at Lenox Baker Children’s Hospital as part of the Duke Pre-Health Volunteer Program. At Lenox Baker, she tutors and plays with the kids and assists the staff by helping with paperwork and managing patient flow. These experiences, along with her previous experience volunteering at a rural hospital near her hometown in Michigan, have helped Julia realize her passions for global health and working with children. She aspires to become a physician and work with underserved populations and specifically children. At Duke, Julia is also a part of a research team studying the effects of exercise on body image and a member of the WISER Duke club.
