Editor’s Message
Hi, Florida District!
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and will enjoy the rest of
your holidays! Please remember those in need, as well. Whether it be helping a
family put a meal on the table, giving a child a toy when he or she might otherwise
go without any presents, or collecting clothing for when the temperatures
get cooler, any and all help is important and appreciated.
Also, be sure to follow the Florida District on social media and to create
accounts for your own clubs in order to show your club’s impact and to document
the service you do, including service done over the holiday season.
Please do your best to implement the hashtags #KeyGoesGreen, #BeTheKey,
#Elimin8, and #FLKeyClub.
Some of my responsibilities entail assisting club editors, managing the Florida
District’s social media accounts, creating and editing newsletters, and designing
this bimonthly publication, The Sunshine Source. If you haven’t received
any monthly emails from me and you are a club president, editor, faculty
advisor, or Kiwanis advisor, then make sure your OIF is up to date! If you ever
find yourself in need of help, feel free to contact me; I’d love to help any
way that I can.
I hope you all enjoy this issue!
Yours in friendship and service,
Hello, Key Clubbers!
We are now entering the holiday season, one
of my favorite times of the year. This is also the
season of large service initiatives in your communities
for holiday activities, and they are in need
of your help! Take advantage of this time and
lend a helping hand to as many organizations in
your area as possible. As we begin to approach
such a special time of the year, reflect on what
your club has done for the community, and what
you can do even better to increase your impact.
Give the priceless gift of impactful service. There
is so much that you, as well as those being
served, gain that cannot be purchased or obtained
through any other means. As the months grow, slightly, colder
here in Florida, let your hearts only get warmer!
A part of this season is also the New Year, and a great time to set
goals for yourself and your club. As I mentioned, look back on the past
365 days and think, "how have we, as a club, changed the community,
and how can I as an individual member make an even greater change
this year." To give you some guidance on where to focus, we as a District
have completed 10,000 Key Goes Green hours, towards our 50,000 goal.
This puts us a tad behind schedule, but we have plenty of time to work
on this goal, and even surpass it. Make sure you are holding at least one
Key Goes Green event each month, or more! It is so easy to get involved,
and I hope you find your niche in our District-wide effort to help the environment.
2016 is a fast approaching time, and I look forward to all we
will achieve as a District.
Thank you for all you do as dedicated members and officers, and
keep up the great work!
Happy Holidays,
Governor Shane Meagher
On Saturday, November 21, over 80 volunteers gathered at the Florida
Learning Garden to participate in the first District Large Scale Service
Project (DLSSP). Thank you to everyone who joined in the efforts
to better the environment in this Key Goes Green project, and special
thanks to the DLSSP Committee and its Chair, Martha Hagan, for
organizing such a huge event.
Thank you Immediate Past Treasurer Palak Shah for your service to
A Message from Treasurer Eileen Rivery
Ahoy Florida Leaders!
I am so honored and ecstatic be working with you all as your 2015-2016 District
Treasurer! I am a senior at Hialeah Gardens Senior High (Div. 25A, Zone K) who
plans to go to college and double major in Political Science and Chemistry. I
also plan to continue in the Kiwanis Family for years to come. Two things that
you might find strange about me are that I am a pescatarian and my favorite
way of decorating is with cork boards and tons of pictures! If I'm not doing Key
Club-related work, I'm probably attending a sporting event as an athletic
trainer for my school. If you ever have any questions or concerns, please feel
free to contact me via phone or email. I hope to get to meet many of you at
our District Conference. Wish you all a bon voyage!
Meet a Key Clubber
Jennifer Lin
Meet Jennifer Lin, a senior at Cypress
Bay High School and a member of the Army
JROTC, Youth Advisor in Youth Leadership
Broward, and Treasurer and Summer Camp
Chair for the International Buddhist Progress
Society Young Adult Division. She is also a
member of Spanish Honor Society, Chinese
Honor Society, Rho Kappa, Mu Alpha Theta,
and, of course, Key Club. She serves as her
Key Club’s Senior Class Representative and
has been involved with Key Club since her
sophomore year. However, she said she truly
wished she had been a part of the organization
sooner.
“Like the average freshmen, I had no
idea what Key Club was about except for the
common assumption that Key Club makes
keys. However, it all changed when I was introduced
to the Kiwanis Family by several devoted
Key Clubbers at my school and the faculty
advisor,” she said.
After hearing more about what Key
Club actually does, she developed an interest
and attended DCON the next year. Lin decided
to take her love for Key Club to the International
level by attending ICON this past
summer.
“When I joined, I did not realize the
true scope of Key Club until I went to
ICON… I wanted to expand my horizons and
make the most of my remaining year in Key
Club. I decided to attend ICON with the
mindset that it would be like DCON, only to
realize that it would me so much more,” she
said.
Though she loved the Florida District’s
road trip to and from Indianapolis, her favorite
part of the trip was the Meet and Greet at
the convention itself. She especially loved
meeting people from other Districts by trading
pins.
ICON was an experience that changed
her entire perception of Key Club and has motivated
her to help her own club improve its
Kiwanis Family relations. She also hopes to
16
encourage more members to attend DCON
and ICON or run for higher office if they
have an interest. It inspired her to attend the
upcoming ICON in Atlanta, and she hopes to
bring several other friends and members along
with her. She’d like to build lasting friendships
with other college-bound Key Clubbers
there, especially since she plans to remain a
member of the Kiwanis Family by joining Circle
K.
She said that the quote, “The best way
to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service
of others,” by Ghandi is one that she
firmly believes and has motivated her to pursue
a career field that will help her to change
others’ lives for the better.
“I feel that these words describe how
Key Club has made a tremendous impact in
my life. From Peanut Butter and Jelly Drives,”
said Lin, “to fundraisers for The Eliminate
Project, I am giving back to the world. The
idea of being able to perform service and hang
out with friends is something I believe is doable
only in Key Club.”
A Message from Circle K Governor Jessica Cook
Hello, Florida Key Club!
My name is Jessica Cook and I am honored to be serving as the
Governor for the Florida District of Circle K International. Circle K is
the collegiate branch of the Kiwanis Family, with more than 14,000
members in 19 countries. We have 14 active clubs in the Florida District,
and during my term we are working to increase that number!
I graduated from Hollywood Hills High School in 2011, where I
was an active member of Key Club. I decided to continue my journey in
the Kiwanis Family because of the awesome CKI members I met at the 2011 Key Club DCON.
I’m so grateful for the members who encouraged me to join Circle K because I have made great
connections and friendships that will last a lifetime through this organization.
I am currently studying accounting at the University of South Florida in Tampa. When
I’m not studying or doing something for Circle K, I’m probably watching Gilmore Girls, painting
my nails, or taking a nap.
This year for my Governor’s Project, I have asked CKI clubs in Florida to focus on removing
the non-native and invasive plant species from the parks in their community. The
health of the native plants in our communities is vital to the success of our ecosystem, and this
is something I have been working with for about 10 years. Circle K clubs are encouraged to remove
the non-natives, plant native species, and educate their communities about this environmental
issue.
In addition to working with invasive plant species, the Florida District of Circle K is
planning to build 7 new clubs and increase our membership by
about 20%. We also hope to have record-breaking attendance at
our district events and increased participation in Kiwanis Family
events.
Please let me know if there is anything I can help with, and
I look forward to working with you this year!
Florida Circle K Governor
Jessica Cook
A Message from Kiwanis Governor Celia Earle
My Dear Key Clubbers,
Welcome to the Kiwanis 2015-2016 year, which is different from
the Key Club year. It has been a pleasure to have spent time with you this
past year at your District Convention and various board meetings and
trainings. I am always so energized when I am around you. I remain impressed
with the leadership that you have exhibited and the service that
you have performed. Our future looks very bright because of all of you.
You are awesome servant leaders, and I thank you for your commitment
and dedication to make this world a better place. I must state that once
you have left your respective High Schools, you need to join Circle K International (CKI) at
your Colleges/Universities and, if one does not exist, then please form one. Thanks to the current
Florida District of Key Club Governor, Shane Meagher, and your board for your outstanding
leadership that has resulted in significant growth within the District. Your membership
and service numbers are amazing…more hands mean more service. Keep up the good work!
Please work closely with your Kiwanis Clubs and Kiwanis Divisions; attend their meetings
and ask to participate in not only meetings, but projects. Some of the best projects are
those that are joint Kiwanis/Key Club projects. Let us exemplify the true meaning of “Kiwanis
Family.”
I am humbled to have been installed as the Florida District of Kiwanis Governor for
2015-2016 and will do my utmost best to continue to move the District well into the next Kiwanis
century. My motto is “Passion for People! Passion for Service!” which is what I strongly believe.
We are not on this earth for self, but to help others. Please know that I will be here for
you as I have been for the past few years.
Thanks again for all that you do. Be blessed!
Peace and Love,
Hundreds of Key Club Teens Join in Miami
Lakes’ Largest Food Drive to Feed Homeless
Hundreds of South Florida teens, representing seven local Key Clubs sponsored by the Kiwanis
Club of Greater Miami Lakes, recently gathered at Miami Lakes Town Hall on Saturday November
7, 2015 in the culmination of a weeks-long food drive to feed the homeless.
Under the direction of the Kiwanis Club of Greater Miami Lakes, the teens—from Key
Clubs at Miami Lakes Educational Center, Barbara Goleman Senior High, Hialeah-Miami Lakes
Senior High, American Senior High, Mater Lakes Academy, Jose Marti Mast Academy, and Hialeah
Gardens Senior High –brought thousands of cans of food and bottled water to the gathering at
Town Hall.
Joining the teens for the event were Miami Lakes Mayor Michael Pizzi, Vice Mayor Manny
Cid, and council members Frank Mingo, Tony Lama and Caesar Mestre.
In recognition of the teens’ efforts, which were part of Key Club International’s Key Club
Week worldwide, the Mayor presented a proclamation declaring the day as Key Club Day in Miami
Lakes.
“What you Key Club members have done here today is absolutely amazing,” said the Mayor
in presenting an official proclamation which urged the people of Miami Lakes to ‘recognize the
meaningful work done by the Kiwanis Club of Greater Miami Lakes and their seven tireless Key
Clubs who are constantly giving of themselves to make our community a better place.’
In addition to presenting the proclamation, the Mayor received a special ‘I support Kiwanis
of Greater Miami Lakes’ t-shirt. He put the shirt on to present the proclamation.
“This was an outstanding event,” said Tom Freiwald, Past Distinguished Kiwanis Div. 25
LTG and the Kiwanis Key Club Advisor to the Key Clubs. “The Key Club members and their advisors
did a fantastic job which will enable us to distribute food to the homeless of the area, which
is particularly important around the holiday time.”
Working Together
Key Club would not be where it is today, with over 270,000 members
worldwide, or have the great impact it does without the help of some
key organizations. Key Club International’s preferred charities (UNICEF,
March of Dimes, and Children’s Miracle Network), vision partners
(Nickelodeon and Landscape Structures Inc.), and co-sponsors (Rustic
Pathways and the U.S. Army) have played instrumental roles in all that we
do. We look forward to changing more lives for the better with your help!
Prematurity Awareness Month
November was Prematurity
Awareness Month, and Kiwanis
Family members throughout the
Florida District participated in
events to support the cause, from
wearing purple on Prematurity
Awareness Day (November 17),
to volunteering at a March of
Dimes walk. Kiwanis headquarters
was lit purple in support, too.
A Few Ke
Key Club is the world’s largest and oldest student-led organization, with
over 270,000 members in 36 nations worldwide. It originated in Sacramento,
California, in 1925. Two Kiwanians, who were also administrators,
chose to establish a club to develop leadership in 11 of
the school’s “key boys,” hence the name “Key Club.”
Key Club is one of the branches of the Kiwanis International
Family, in addition to Aktion Club, Circle K International,
Builders’ Club, and Kiwanis Kids. However, Key Club
remains the largest of the organizations.
OFFICER INFORMATION FORMS (OIFs) are to be filled out by the secretary as
