A note from our editor...
Hello
lovely Lifestyle readers!
Happy New Year!
I hope you have all enjoyed the holiday festivities.
As we are about to embark on 2016, I want to
wish you all a very Happy New Year, from all of us
here at Lifestyle Magazine.
This is the point where people normally ask if any
New Year’s resolutions have been made. To which
I reply in the negative as I don’t believe in them. I
have made them in the past – who hasn’t. But they
were always made during drunken festivities, and
broken within days, sometimes even minutes
after making them. So a few years ago I decided
to stop making resolutions every December
31st, and instead if I wanted to try something,
like spending more time with my family, give up
smoking or taking up running I wouldn’t wait till
January 1st, I would just make a decision to do
whatever it was I wanted to do there and then.
And to be honest I haven’t looked back. I made
the best resolution of my life, not to put things
off. I attack every day with as much vigour as I
can muster, because I now believe that if want to
do something, or change something why wait?
So welcome 2016, I am looking forward to
spending every day with you, to see what
amazing experiences you are going to throw my
and my little family’s way.
To all our readers, I hope 2016 brings you a full
year of good health and hearty belly laughs.
The ReTuRn of
ZoolandeR
b e n s t i l l e r
8
A
former self-confessed manic-depressive,
Ben Stiller, once puzzled over his ability
to amuse millions of movie-goers while
privately struggling with depression.
But there's nothing like a wife and two kids to
put aside all that angst - as he's now happily
discovered within his 15 year marriage to actress
and co-star Christine Taylor with whom he has
daughter Ella,13 and son Quinlan, ten.
A Hollywood progeny, the son of legendary
husband-and-wife comedians Anne Meara
and the late Jerry Stiller, Stiller has one of the
best box office records in Hollywood, his films
grossing US$2.6 billion domestically thanks to hit
franchises like Meet The Fockers and Night at the
Museum.
One of his most popular roles was as dumb male
model Derek Zoolander, co-starring with Owen
Wilson. For almost 15 years he resisted making a
sequel although today he has finally relented.
With surprising cameos from Justin Bieber,
Kim Kardashian, Ariana Grande and Benedict
Cumberbatch, Stiller promises that Zoolander 2
will be the toast of the fashion world:

People are still talking about Derek Zoolander's
Blue Steel look after 15 years?
Yeah well, when the first movie came out, nobody
really wanted to see it so it has been interesting
over the years that it has a life. The look seemed
to have endured.
Did you feel the fashion world has changed in
the last 15 years? Has it got even sillier?
Well, I'm not really a fashionista type of person so
I don't stay on top of it all! But it moves so quickly
and obviously they always have to be topping
themselves and part of what the fashion world
is about is the drama of it and taking yourself
seriously and say this is what we think is beautiful
and this is what we think is cool. They have to do
that month after month, they have to recreate
and start from scratch so that’s why it gets so
crazy because they are looking at what's gonna
get the attention next, something that stands
out. It always been hard to outdo that because it's
already so crazy, we try mostly to acknowledge
where fashion is today in terms, which I think is
much bigger in consciousness because of social
media and the way people connect with it. And
Instagram which is such a big part of fashion
world in terms of how ideas get communicated
and images are out there. For the fashion world,
that has become a thing, it's so much more about
social media so it’s definitely out there throughout
the world in people's mind.
What have been Anna Wintour's involvement?
She just really loved the first movie and when I
told her what I was doing in the next one she was
like, "Please let me help any way possible."
Was she instrumental in getting Valentino?
She was instrumental to a lot of aspects of the
movie as only she could be, yeah. I've met Mr.
Valentino a few times over the years. And really
for me after seeing the documentary, Valentino:
The Last Emperor about him 7 years ago, that was
one of the reasons I wanted to set the movie in
Rome because it was a great movie and it felt like
there was a complement in Italian movies and the
fashion world, giving the movie an all different
feeling that was really connected to that.
And Anna has been really helpful, first of all just
her saying, "Hey, I like this!" really opened up the
door for us in so many ways to the rest of the
fashion world.
And now you have celebrities falling over
themselves to be a part of this. Justin Bieber
was hilarious in the trailer.
Yeah and Benedict Cumberbatch is great, he was
so game and so excited. I felt really fortunate that
people who were fans of the first movie wanted
to come on board and be a part of it. There is
definitely a few surprises in there. It's always
that thing with the trailer, how much you put
out there, you know. For me, I wish everything
could be a surprise you know but you also want
people to come to the movie and see what it is. I
think we saved a few good ones, some just really
funny, sort of odd ones too. There's a bunch of
people from the fashion world in the movie too
and people you'd think wouldn't be in the movie
are in there...
Did you think beforehand about the talent
who should appear in it?
It always comes down to the people you can get,
the reality of what you can get but it was always
about getting people we felt would feel the
right kind of cameo as opposed to just getting
someone famous. It's a weird thing you can't
really define but sometimes you think that person
would be great to get like President Clinton but
doesn't that feel like 'Zoolander' I don't know, we
just couldn't get him but you know, you have to
think who could exist in this universe. 9

10
How was it like to walk the catwalk for real for
Valentino in Paris?
That was crazy! That was really exciting and scary
because it was a big surprise - you can't trip and
it was a big thing we worked on for about a year
to get to that point and keep it a secret and Anna
was a big part of making that happen too. The
lead up to it was pretty wild because we were
hiding for 3 hours backstage, the models didn't
even know... In fact if you look at the video, I
come out and then, a model comes out behind
me thinking that I was gonna be the end of the
show and they didn't tell them that we were
coming out, and someone comes out and pull
her back in. We wanted to figure out a way to
announce the movie in a different way and
it was really great for us, it was exciting
to see that people actually had a nice
reaction, we didn't know what we
would get. The surprise really is
what people responded to and
how they thought Valentino had
such a sense of humour for him
to do that.
We know how women feel
about the pressure for their
looks in Hollywood, do you feel
such a pressure?
Well you know, I mean, I guess I feel like
as a person everybody is different. I think as
you get older, you just want to feel good about
yourself, for me as I get older, I think about my
life and I feel it gets much simpler. I just want to
be healthy, be happy! I just want to be around
because I think that's the reality of life, you start
to see all sort of things happening to people and
those realities that we live with. That's really my
thing, I just want to be healthy.
Your wife Christine Taylor played your
girlfriend in the first Zoolander. Is she in this
movie as well?
Ben: She appears in the movie yeah, but because
that big disaster in the beginning of the movie, it
sets everything off... You know, it's a world where
supernatural things can occur so.
Why did you wait so many years for the second
one?
Well, it wasn't intentional. I think if when the
movie came out it had been a big hit, we would
have done a sequel then but nobody was
clamouring for it. But then a few years after the
movie came out, it seems like it still had a life
and back in 2005 we tried to do it, we wrote a
script. It just didn't come together, the cast and
the elements weren't happening then so we let
it go for a while. I've never been thinking I have
to do a sequel to the movie, I was really happy
that people still remembered the movie and liked
it, and of course as the years go by, I thought I
couldn't do it because it has been years. 2010
came and we decided to go back in because it
started to feel like the movie was still in people's
consciousness and so I wrote a script with Justin
(Theroux) in 2010 and thought we were gonna
do it then and we couldn't get the elements
together the right way.
It's hard to make movies.
They come together very
specifically. This movie,
I thought, all the cast
was really important
in it, I wanted to bring
it all together and
so we let it go again
and then, it wouldn't
just go away! Back in
2013ish, is when we
started to really look at
it again.
Did you feel any pressure?
Yes definitely! The more time went by the
more I was "Wow, how do we do this?!" because
we are getting older and people really seemed
to love the movie so how do you make it good
enough and all those things.
But in writing the script in 2010, I got excited
of what it could be and then when we got the
cast together, when Will said he wanted to do it,
Owen (Wilson) was into it, we did a read through
of the script with everybody last year. That was
last year in September that we really locked in, it
was exciting, everybody was into it and it dealt
in and it was, "Let's do it!". I thought if we could
do something different and take some chances
with it, that was really important to me because I
thought the first movie committed to the reality
of what it was and took chances to what it was
so the second movie should try to take chances
too and not be trying to recreate what the first
one was.

h
istorian and author John Broom has just
released his latest book, Fight the Good
Fight, which brings together twenty-three
individual and family case studies of both soldiers
and civilians who were of a Christian faith and who
did their part for Britain in the First World War. Some
of these stories are of well-known personalities,
others are stories that have become neglected,
but all of them have a new light shed on them by
John Broom in this enthralling book. Among these
stories is one of an incredible family from Liverpool.
book does not overlook the contributions made
by the other brothers; Christopher, Bernard and
Aidan, as well as the nursing work done by twin
sisters Marjorie and May. It demonstrates how their
sincere faith guided the actions of a family who
gave so much both to Liverpool and the world.
12
The book features the notable Chavasse family
of Liverpool. The legacy of Francis Chavasse still
towers over the city due to his vision for an Anglican
Cathedral to reflect Liverpool’s prominence. His
four sons all served in the war, with Noel going
down in history as the only man to be awarded
two Victoria Crosses for his bravery when serving
as a doctor in the Royal Army Medical Corps. The

Despite his youthful looks the Irishman has
recently marked up 20 years as a comic. His latest
show of observational comedy, Outside, Looking
In, covers a wide range of subjects – from a recent
gastric illness to the success of UKIP – but he talks
a lot about his family and it's his most personal
yet.
“I didn't make a conscious effort to write a more
personal show, but that was what was coming out
when I started writing it,” Ed says. “People come to
see me for a laugh and I would like to think they
go away thinking the show is quite heartwarming.
A lot of comics may talk about the same stuff, but
what makes it mine is that what I'm saying is what
I genuinely think on this subject, and I try to make
it as funny as I can. I think we all mine our lives to
some degree or other.”
Ed is adamant that he will keep his two young
sons out of the celebrity spotlight, so don't
expect an “At Home With Ed Byrne and Family”
in OK! any time soon. But in Outside, Looking
In, he shows a picture of one of his sons - the
denouement of a bittersweet story about buying
new shoes – which not only illustrates it perfectly,
but produces an “Aaaah” moment.
“I'm aware that they haven't given me permission
to talk about them and that there will come a point
when I can't,” Ed says. “John Bishop, for example,
has stopped talking about his [much older]
children on stage because people know who
they are.
“I talk about them in pretty abstract terms, because
what I'm discussing is the act of parenting, and you
can't talk about that without mentioning your own
children. And there isn't anything in this show that
would make them at a later date say, 'I don't like
this'.”
But while there is a lot of personal reflection in his
new show, Ed also ponders on matters political
- the story about his son sparks a passionate
section about how we label young children, for
instance, and he also talks about feminism and
transgenderism.
I ask Ed if dipping a toe into the transgender
debate (for which some have been vilified on
social media) isn't a little risky. “It has become such
a big subject because of Caitlyn Jenner [the former
athlete Bruce Jenner, who transitioned earlier
20

this year] and some Twitter trolls were refusing to
acknowledge her as anything but Bruce. I thought it
was interesting that it still divides people. I call it the
thorniest issue since Jesus was fitted for a hat.”
The feminist slant to the new show was sparked
by Ed's reflections on his early days in comedy
and, strikingly, he admits to being a little
uncomfortable about some of his more laddish
material back then.
“My comedy reflected my life at that time – single
and enjoying myself – and most of it was fairly
harmless 'the difference between men and women'
kind of thing. But some of the stuff about an exgirlfriend
I can see was a bit angry and I wouldn't
do it now.”
He says he is more aware of how men and
women interact in the modern world and is
sometimes surprised by the difference in his
reactions to things as a man in his forties to when
he was twentysomething. “I started watching
Californication [the US dark comedy starring
David Duchovny as a sex addict] but I found it
insulting because I'm expected to empathise with
him. His character behaves so unconscionably
that I couldn't watch the second series.
“I don't how much of that is simply getting older, or
that times have changed, or mixing with a broader
group of people. Interestingly I find Twitter can
expand your horizons; I've started following all
sorts of people on it and it's good to get a different
take on things.”
I ask Ed, 43, if he still likes touring after two
decades. “Apart from the travel involved, which
no comic likes, I love it, because you have people
responding to something that you have written
alone in your office, and the work comes alive in a
room of people. I like the television things I do, but
nothing can beat a live comedy audience.”
In any spare time he has, Ed is a hill walker; when in
Scotland he “bags” Munros (peaks above 3,000ft,
he's at 75) and the completist, slightly geeky side
side of him, he admits, means that elsewhere in
the British Isles he also collects “county tops” - the
highest point in the county. “I've downloaded an
app for them,” he says with a laugh, “and have
started making a list of those I've done.”
He's currently writing a sitcom set in an outdoors
shop, and I ask if he plans to introduce his sons
to the pleasures of outdoors. “My wife, Claire,
and I already have. So far they love it, camping and
canoeing, that sort of thing. As they're growing it's
hard to be apart from them when I'm on tour, and
I try not to be away for more than a couple of days
at a time, but one of the great things about my job
is that it means I can spend a lot of time with them
when I'm home.”
OVER 50% OF FAMILIES IN LIVERPOOL
SAY SECURING AN EXCELLENT LOCAL
SCHOOL PLACE FOR THEIR CHILDREN
IS AS STRESSFUL AS MOVING HOUSE
NEW SURVEY FINDS SCHOOL ADMISSIONS
PROCESS ‘UNNECESSARILY CONFUSING’
More than half the families in Liverpool find
getting their children into a good local
school is as stressful as moving home,
sometimes more so, according to a new survey
by One Poll on behalf of FindASchool by 192.com,
a free definitive guide to all schools in the UK,
including admissions information, designed to
help parents make informed decisions.
72 per cent of parents surveyed in the North West
felt that the admissions system makes the process
of finding a school unnecessarily confusing.
Problems occur because different schools have
different admissions criteria, and with increasing
demand for school places lots of children cannot
even get a place at their local school. This is
obviously a particularly stressful issue in areas
surrounding popular, high performing schools
with good Ofsted ratings, which tend to be heavily
oversubscribed.
Despite 57 per cent of the parents surveyed said
that the process of finding a school place for their
children was as stressful as a house move. Many
were prepared to go to great lengths to ensure
their child got a place at the school of their choice.
For example, 27 per cent of them said they would
be prepared to move house to get their child into a
good school. 55 per cent said if they were moving,
they would be willing to pay more for a house if it
guaranteed access to a preferred school.
Moving house was just one example of the
tactics that parents will employ to get a place at a
preferred school. Other examples included:
• 15 per cent who said they were prepared
to register at a different address or to lie on
the application form about their personal
circumstances;
• 15 per cent who were prepared to attend
church purely to meet a school’s admission
criteria;
• 8 per cent who would put up with over five
hours of traveling per week; and
• 12 per cent who would pay for private school.
Data collected by FindASchool shows that in 2014,
43% of schools in Liverpool were oversubscribed.
22 The average cut-off distance – that is, the
furthest home to school distance of a successful
applicant[1] for all oversubscribed schools in the
City of Liverpool is 1077m, but it is hugely variable.
“Choosing a school for your child and navigating
the admissions process can be very stressful,” said
Ed Rushton, Founder of FindASchool by 192.com.
“Collecting and collating all the admissions data
for primary and secondary schools in the country
is a mammoth task, so I am not surprised by the
results of this survey. From my own experience I
know how difficult it is both to find and understand
the information you need to make an informed
decision, which is why I developed a free online
service to help other parents.
“We’ve known for some time that parents will
go to extreme lengths to get their child into the
school of their choice.”
Until now it has been very difficult for parents to
find and then interpret the data needed to make
an informed application. FindASchool helps
parents by displaying things like the Successful
Applicant Area that shows where you would have
needed to live in previous years to gain a place at
a school. This is the first time admissions data has
been collected systematically for all schools in the
UK.
Even where the data is available, there is a confusing
array of different approaches taken by schools.
Through the data collection task, FindASchool has
discovered over 400 permutations of state school
admissions criteria. And within these variations,
there are numerous examples of convoluted
and opaque arrangements used by individual
schools to allocate places, which would be
extremely difficult for any parent to understand.
For example, some schools admission criteria can
be so complex that it will stretch to multiple pages
of requirements to describe all the relevant sets of
criteria.
FindASchool is designed to help parents make
decisions on school applications by presenting
all the information they need in one place, and by
showing where they would have needed to live
to get in to a school in previous years. For further
information on FindASchool by 192.complease
TOP TEN NEW YEAR
“LEGAL” TIPS
FOR RUNNING YOUR
BUSINESS IN 2016
Managing and ensuring the prosperity of your
business in 2016 requires careful planning
and thought and now is the time of year to
review your business and plan ahead.
1. PROTECT AND ENCOURAGE KEY EMPLOYEES
Having the right contracts in place with Key
Performance Indicators and which provide real
reward whether by bonus structure, benefits or
otherwise help to generate loyalty and creativity.
Having enhanced pensions and allowing flexible
working with proper resources will help you to
get the most out of your Key Employees.
2. REVIEW CONTRACTS AND TERMS AND CONDITIONS
Review at least annually. Your t’s and c’s are the
backbone of your business. Other contracts
whether agency, distribution or shareholder
agreements should also be reviewed and
amended where necessary to take into account
changes in the law and changes in your business.
3. ENSURE GOOD CREDIT CONTROL
Liquidity is king. Make sure you have security in
place where appropriate to ensure payment by a
customer or consider invoice factoring but check
the small print before you sign up.
4. PROTECT YOUR IP
Protecting your brand with a Trade Mark is
relatively simple and adds value to the Balance
Sheet and creates a good impression to your
customers and competitors. Take advice on
patent and design protection if you create. Make
sure you have the right domains secured and be
aware of copyright protection for the original
data/material you produce.
5. STAFF POLICIES
Having the correct Staff Handbook with policies in
place is very important to help provide certainty
for you and your staff. Keep these reviewed and
easily accessible for all.
6. BE AWARE OF YOUR COMPETITORS
Your competitors are key to helping drive your
business. Keeping a watching brief but stay
original and aim to be one step ahead. There may
be times when it makes sense to work together
and a joint venture contract or collaboration may
benefit you both.
7. AVOID LITIGATION AND BE PRAGMATIC
Disputes should be avoided and having the
up to date contracts in place is one aspect.
Nevertheless, disputes do arise so consider
mediation services and expert determination to
avoid litigation.
8. LEGAL EXPENSES COVER
Ask your broker to provide a quote and especially
in relation to IP protection and employment
cover but again consider the small print and
excess on all policies.
9. YOUR ADVISERS
Having a good solicitor and accountant in place
who you can rely on and pick up the phone to
ask a question without being charged is key.
Relationships remain essential and your adviser
should be part of your inner Team.
10. REVIEW YOUR BUSINESS PLAN
Your Plan should cover all the Tips set out above.
Put one in place with a time line of what you wish
to achieve, by when and the person responsible.
You and your Key Managers need to take
ownership of the Plan.
If you need any Legal Advice for your
Business please contact Michael Sandys
at Guy William Layton at mls@gwq.co.uk.
Everton
Community
COMMUNITY FIRST WITH
KARATE KICKS
Al-Ghazali Karate Club demonstration
G
oodison Park played
host to another Everton
first last night as the Club’s
official charity launched a new programme, Karate
Kicks.
Lord Mayor Cllr Tony Concepcion was present at
the Alex Young Suite as Hisham Saif, the lead coach
at Everton in the Community’s Kicks sessions was
honoured.
Karate Kicks, which is affiliated to the Karate
Union of Great Britain is funded by the Premier
League, Liverpool City Council and Merseyside
Police. The initiative works using sport, in this case
Karate, towards creating stronger, more respectful
communities through a blend of activities to reduce
anti-social behaviour within identified hotspot
areas.
In honour of the work Hisham has delivered in
the community Amina, a young girl from the
local community, recited a poem to celebrate the
22 year-olds dedication, this was followed by a
demonstration by children from the Al-Ghazali
Karate Club. Hisham was presented with an award
from Everton in the Community by title winning ex-
Everton fullback Pat Van Den Hauwe.
Having started karate at the age of the five, the
third-dan blackbelt claimed the WSKA World
Shotokan Karate-Do Championship in Poland this
year, adding this accolade to five national titles,
two senior European titles and another two senior
world titles.
But it is back in his native South Liverpool that
Hisham hoped to make a real impact, having already
held a few taster Karate Kicks sessions for the young
attendees. With numbers already in double figures,
the 22-year-old feels the ethos of Kicks and the
disciplines of Karate can perfectly marry up.
“Karate has helped me so much through my
childhood,” he said. “As well as physically, karate has
also helped me mentally. I did well in school, I got
a degree in Sports Management and I carried on
studying as well as pursuing martial arts. I believe
that karate can impact the lives of people within
our community and help reduce crime in a way that
football - and in particular, Kicks - has done.”
The Club’s official charity has delivered a Kicks
programme involving football in the local
community for six years and lead football sessions
in areas which have high incidents of crime and
anti-social behaviour to encourage children to
develop their potential.
In figures provided by Merseyside Police, the
programme has contributed to a 65% reduction in
anti-social behaviour and a 79% reduction in crime
in some of the most challenging communities
across the region. In 2013 the project expanded
from seven sessions to 24 sessions per week across
Merseyside.
Paul Nagle, Social Inclusion Manager at Everton in
the Community, said “Our Kicks football programme
has been very successful and Everton are breaking
new ground again as we are the first Premier League
Club to now have a Karate Programme affiliated
to our official charity. We look forward to working
with Hisham and the Al-Ghazali Centre where the
sessions will take place.”
For more information about the weekly sessions
call 0151 530 5253 or email Everton in the
THE UK’S
FACIAL AGEING
CONCERNS
REVEALED
When it comes to the look of our ageing
faces, jowls (44%) and necks (36%)
are the two main areas which worry
us most, according to a survey conducted by
Sinclair Pharma.1 As a result of these concerns,
almost half of women (48%) would now consider
a minimally invasive procedure such as a skin lift
(as opposed to a surgical face lift under general
anaesthetic).
Most of those questioned would prefer an
understated look rather than a drastic change in
their appearance, with more than three quarters
(77%) saying they would hope to look subtly
different after treatment, and just 5% wanting to
look ‘dramatically different’. In terms of honesty,
just over half (56%) said they would admit to
friends that they had had treatment.
Those aged 35-44 were the most likely age group
to consider a minimally invasive treatment, and
whilst an increasing number are interested in
addressing their ageing face, safety concerns
and professionalism are extremely high priorities
when considering who will treat them. Crucially
83% said that it was important that the procedure
was carried out by a fully trained doctor, as
opposed to a non-medical professional – and
only 4% said they would be happy to have a
beautician carry out the treatment.
These results come as no surprise to makers of
Silhouette Soft who commissioned the survey.
Silhouette Soft is a non-surgical method to lift the
skin, which is leading the vanguard movement
for more natural-looking anti-ageing treatments,
embracing the principle of ‘still me but better’
rather than leaving those treated looking like
they have obviously had ‘work done’. The
treatment uses unique re-absorbable surgical
threads made of polylactic acid, which are dotted
with a series of bi-directional cones to instantly
lift the subcutaneous tissue and in time stimulate
collagen production. The minimally-invasive
treatment is carried out using local anaesthetic,
allowing the threads to be inserted painlessly
just under the skin, and takes less than an hour
to carry out.
Silhouette Soft provides a unique two phased
result: The lifting effect is instant yet extremely
discreet, so much so that there is minimal
recovery and it is possible to resume normal
activity without anyone knowing that treatment
has taken place. This is followed by a regenerative
effect during which the body gradually produces
type 1 collagen which is stronger and more elastic
than type 3 (stimulated by conventional surgical
PDO threads). This has the effect of restoring
the youthful appearance of the face in the most
natural-looking and flexible way possible. As
a result Silhouette Soft is fast becoming the
‘reference treatment’ for minimally invasive skin
lifting of the midface, jowls, neck and brow,
allowing doctors to address a far wider scope of
patients’ needs without resorting to surgery.
Such is the popularity of Silhouette Soft that over
84,000 treatments have now been carried out
worldwide. Last month it was announced that
the treatment has been shortlisted as a finalist
in the Product Innovation of the Year category
of the 2015 Aesthetic Awards (with the results
being announced on 5th December 2015). The
extension of the treatment to include the neck
and brow will undoubtedly add to the accolades
and popularity of the treatment.
The effects of a Silhouette Soft treatment last
18 months to 2 years, with prices for a brow
averaging £600, a neck treatment costing £1,000
and mid face lift £1,500. Treatment is offered
subject to the clinician confirming a patient’s
suitability, but typically suits someone aged 40+
who can push the skin on their face upwards by
around a centimeter. To find out more visit
THE SHEARLING EFFECT
Harsh weather is upon us, so
it's time we prepare ourselves
with this winter's absolute
must have style - shearling. And
best of all there is shearling chic
for everyone. From those who are
tentatively dipping their toe in to
this revival of a 1970's staple trend,
there is shaggy collars and cuffs,
and mittens that can be swiftly
removed if the shearling feeling
becomes a little too much. And for
the full on enthusiast, there is the
full length shearling coat and head
band.
This trend is one for the gentlemen
too - although any bloke in a full
length shearing coat is just going
to look like a late 70's football
manager, not good, even Mr
Beckham didn't carry the look
off. Better the gents stick to the
shearling bomber jacket. Think of
the robust ruggedness of Steve
Mcqueen, and wear it over a simple
t shirt and flannel shirt, of dress it
up with a pair of sharp chino's and
jumper. Perfect.
Working as a make-up
artist for Liverpool
Fashion Week was
an amazing experience, and being behind the
scenes in such a busy environment is challenging,
although it is the perfect way to practice and
perfect some skilled artistry! One of our make-up
designs was the classical flicked liner, 'smoked'
eye-shadow, bold lip combo. Possibly one of the
most traditional looks that has been with us for
years, yet still seems to baffle so many of us! So, the
best advice I can give to all of you make-up lovers
out there is this... lots and lots of PRACTISE! Don't
give up the first time your flicks end up looking
like stray hairs hanging awkwardly down the side
of your face (we've all been there), power on and
don't give up trying. Eventually you will find the
product and style that is right for you; my personal
favourite is gel eyeliner as it blends really well for
more of a soft finish, or you can pair it with a thin
angled brush to achieve that really sharp flick.
When it comes to eye-shadow, the key is to blend
blend, and blend some more, that is a crucial part
of achieving that beautiful soft 'smokey 'eye we all
know and love! Make-up is all about finding your
comfort zone and your confidence, once you find
that, you will never look back.
eflecting on the Autumn/Winter
2015 colour palette faux fur has
certainly made its mark on the
catwalk this season showcasing bold
statement faux furs in cobalt blue by Michael
Kors and Kenzo. Cold weather, dark nights
and a touch of frost we turn to faux fur for
warmth, thickness and luxury. This seasons
faux fur is styled with leather, the two fabrics
are a complete contrast of texture but the
combination is complimentary creating the
ultimate rock ‘n’ roll 70’s glamour look.
Mirroring the concept of contrast I
wanted to experiment with fur. Aiming
to change the whole appearance of faux
fur I decided to cook it at 220C. When the
faux fur came into contact with heat there
was an instant reaction and movement
as the fabric tensed up and darkened in
colour. Others developed a crust surface
or a pattern of holes in a matter of
minutes; it was interesting to observe the
transformation. Considering the risky but
successful experiment, I suddenly got the
bug and I destined to venture onto other
fabric samples keeping the seasonal colour
palette in mind.
The outcome of this experiment was
fascinating how each fabric reacted
variously and beautifully to heat inventing
new textures, colours and shape which
was inspiring to imagine the endless
possibilities on a larger scale.
LIFESTYLE MAGAZINE WAS ONCE
AGAIN INVITED BACKSTAGE FOR
EXCLUSIVE ACCESS TO THE STARS…
...WE ASKED THEM WHAT THEY ARE
HOPING FOR IN 2016… Interview by Amanda Moss
BEN HAENOW
FLEUR EAST
I have had the most crazy year and just want to continue what I
am doing. I have spent the last year recording my album so want
to get out there singing live again. I love performing, especially
in Liverpool, it’s a proper rowdy crowd who are so welcoming.
I have so much to be thankful for, my family have sacrificed
so much for me and I would like to give something back
to them. They supported me financially for so long, as
any struggling musician knows. When I auditioned for the
X Factor I never expected to be where I am today, I mean
we all hope it will happen but never, ever dare to believe. I
would love in 2016 to
work with Ed Sheeran
or Labrinth.
OMI
The last year has been a blast,
I never expected Cheerleader
to do so well.
My new year’s resolution is to
do more touring, meet more
of my fans to thank them.
And I would absolute love to
42
work with John Legend.
THE VAMPS
We go on tour
in the new year
so we’re going
to be healthy!
Our new year’s
resolutions are
to be on time!
SIGMA
So what are our new year’s resolutions? Hmmm.
Maybe drink less? Do more. Be more. Sounds a bit
boring but we’re just happy with our music. We never
expected a top ten hit so we’re just really enjoying
its success, it’s different to what we’re used to. DJing
is out background so performing is different but it
is still nice to see everyone and perform in front of
the crowd. Happy New Year everyone!

Lifestyle’s music columinst...
MARTIN
QUIRK
MOVE ON UP...
Several generations of Liverpool’s muso
community are still buzzing following
a glorious reunion gig at The Kazimier
by ‘cult’ Liverpool band, The Stairs.
‘Cult’, in this case, as whenever it refers
to a band, just means that they’re really good
but they’ve never had much or any mainstream
commercial success. But then, some of the
people who have cited The Stairs as a major
creative influence over the years, people like
Noel Gallagher and Paul Weller, have possibly
had more than their share of it, but nobody ever
said that life was fair.
Edgar ‘Summertyme’ Jones (bass and vocals) Ged
Lynn (guitar) and Paul Maguire (drums) formed
The Stairs to make American garage rock music
of the mid to late 60s in 1990 at a time when
MDMA was fast becoming part of the fabric of
musical culture and fuelling the ‘Madchester’
thing and the Rave/Acid House boom. Not the
best time ever to try and sell doped-out, cosmic
retro-scally grooves inspired by the underground
psychedelic scene of late 1960s California,
perhaps, however good it happened to be.
The fact that The Stairs were so dedicated to that
specific niche in musical history that they made
their notoriously anachronistic contemporaries,
The La’s, seem futuristic by comparison speaks
volumes for their dedication and authenticity.
After The Stairs split Edgar Jones ‘did his National
Service’ playing in The La’s, like almost everyone
else who was around Liverpool back then it
seems, and also toured the world playing bass
for Paul Weller before releasing his own critically
acclaimed records on Liverpool’s own Viper
label.
The Stairs have done a BBC 6 Music session
since the reunion gig but word on a new LP or
any further dates have yet to be confirmed.
However, their only original studio LP, the
fabulous ‘Mexican R&B’, released on Go Discs
(The same label as Paul Weller and The La’s) in
1992 is available on i-Tunes, and is well worth
the investment if you like the rockier late sixties
Beatles and Rolling Stones records or the Paul
Weller, La’s and Oasis albums that they inspired.
NOTE: Strictly over 18s only
Review by Amanda Moss
s a non gambler it may not be your
first choice but Leo Casino has
Aundergone a massive revamp in their
grill restaurant, from the furnishings to the
menu, making it an ideal choice for a night
out without the hustle and bustle of town,
easy parking and a warm welcome awaits
you, not to mention fantastic food that won’t
hurt your wallet. Can’t guarantee the rest of
the venue won’t though!
Atmosphere 9/10
Enjoy spectacular views over Liverpool’s
waterfront while dining here, This restaurant
provides a lovely setting for a relaxing lunch or
evening out.
from Mind Body and Spirit fairs to tribute acts
and dancers so depending on whether you fancy
a quiet night out or a fun filled night, there are
plenty of options and there is no obligation to
play on the tables or machines.
Service 10/10
Above and beyond friendly and helpful, our
waitress made suggestions on the menu and
offered us some cocktail choices we wouldn’t not
have normally thought of.
Table Location 10/10
By the ceiling to floor windows to enjoy the
beautiful landscape, set against the lovely
lighting inside, it was an extremely enjoyable
experience.
Would we go again?
Odds on you’ll have a fantastic experience if
you dine here. Superb food, great service all set
against the beautiful backdrop of Liverpool’s
waterfront with stunning views to enjoy. We
actually felt as if we were on a cruise ship, totally
relaxing and one of the best nights out in ages.
Yes we will go again.
44
Menu choice 10/10
This menu seemed to
be personally designed
for me. There aren’t
many places that I
can go to where I am
tempted by every dish
on offer. I had creamy
garlic mushrooms on
a toasted ciabatta to
start with, followed by
a burger (well done)
with extra pulled pork,
emmental cheese and
onion rings, followed by
a chocolate salted caramel tart.
Entertainment 8/10
If you like gambling then it’s a straight 10/10.
Liverpool, will see Jay examine our love
affair with lousy reviews. As a restaurant
critic for the Observer for over 15 years,
if there is one thing Jay has learnt it is
that his readers delight in reviews of bad
restaurants. In this accompaniment to his
book of the same name, Rayner rants about
his most hated restaurants fads, describes
some of his most excruciating nights out
and – just to balance things – reads from
the worst reviews his own work has ever
received. Having already had a successful
run in 2015, this is a hugely entertaining
show in the company of the man recently
voted the best food and drink journalist in
Britain. Our editor Joy Lewis caught up
with Jay before he started on his tour.
46
Hi Jay how are you?
Well thank you for enquiring, actually I’m not
feeling too well, I’m just coming out of a hideous
cold.
Having a cold must be a huge drawer back for
you when tasting food?
Yes it does, but I don’t let it interfere too much.
About 15 years ago I was doing a restaurant
review and I was so full of a cold I had to take a
stunt taste buds friend with me. I trusted them
implicitly to give me an accurate assessment, but
I have never done it since. Nor will I want to in the
future.

Much of your show is about your food hell,
and your famous brutal restaurant reviews.
Why do you think people swarm to a negative
review?
A bad review simply makes for a better story.
If my show was about my food heaven and me
going on how good everything I’ve ever eaten
is, then that would be 1 ½ hours of your life that
you would never get back. It would be boring.
No, people prefer the story of a bad review, even
though out of all the restaurant reviews I do, very
few are very negative.
What can the audience expect when they
come to your show?
An evening on entertaining hilarity. The premise
comes from an ebook, which has already been
released which
contains 20 of my
worst restaurant
reviews. I’m not
standup comedian,
but it works very
well.
Do you have a
particular style of
restaurant that you
like to eat in?
Yes good ones.
People have accused
me of being a food
snob in the past.
Well of course I’m a
food snob, but that doesn’t mean that I’ve not
succumbed to the odd cheeky Nando’s. And as a
parent some time ago of small children, you do
end up seeking out places where it is easier to
find something on the menu for them to eat, Pizza
Express is one of those places. There will always
be a warm place in my cholesterol dripping heart
for Pizza Express. And I must confess, many years
ago at 2am in the morning, I bought a hot dog
off one of those street stands in Trafalgar Square.
I was drunk of course and it tasted fantastic. But
it was only the once. And everybody has got food
shame in their past.
So you are not averse to the odd chain
restaurant?
No not at all, but it’s very seldom of course. I’m
just a fat guy with an expense account, so I can
be snobby about where I eat. All the meals at
restaurants I review are paid for and when I book,
48
which I do under a pseudonym. So I can pick
where I want to go.
There is much media talk that in the future as
a population we will have to become, at least
in part, vegetarians. Do you agree?
Yes I most certainly do. And I must say, with a tear
in my eye, that that particular future is at some
point inevitable. There is no doubt that we need
to eat less meat. As populations continue to grow,
at least a few days not eating meat is something
everybody will have to do – but that doesn't
mean I'm happy about it.
When you do the reviews on Masterchef,
I imagine you sharpening your knife and
fork beforehand. Are you harsher on the
professionals than the celebrities?
Yes I am, mush harsher.
Having said that, I won’t
hold back if a celebrity
serves something truly
awful. I also have to be
mindful that it’s a TV
show, and we are all
there for entertainment
purposes. From the
professional chefs I
expect a standard. They
have all been watching
the show for years
before they applied to
appear on it. They know
the level of food that
they need to produce, so it surprises me when
they don’t deliver to that required level. If I was
a chef I wouldn’t put myself forward for Master
Chef, it’s an incredibly risky business, putting
yourself and career out there where it can, and
has for some, gone horribly wrong.
When you come up to Liverpool are you
planning to try a few restaurants here? We have
some amazing places to eat, the independents
in particular are fantastic.
Yes I am, but not as a critic. Lunya I have already
eaten at, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Camp and
Furnace is now on the list to give a go when I am
up there.
Wahaca has recently moved to Liverpool
One, it’s a chain restaurant that promises
Mexican inspired small and large plates
of street food. Our editor Joy Lewis went
along to sample this new foodie addition
to Liverpool One.
ATMOSPHERE 9/10
The atmosphere is warm, vibrant and very
welcoming, exactly as you would expect in a
Mexican style restaurant. The seating spans three
floors, all decorated in a Mexican style mashed
with industrial urban chic. A bit of a mix, but this is
the City after all, and the industrial look certainly
works in Liverpool. The walls and furniture are
brightly painted, so much so that you would be
forgiven, as we did, for forgetting that it’s cold
outside.
MENU CHOICE 10/10
The menu is Mexican street food made up of
small plates where you can chose 3 or 4 dishes
per person, or a “big” plate of food for each
diner. We opted for the small plates so we could
taste as many different dishes as our stomachs
would allow. The menu spans everything from
shredded duck taquitos to Mexico City style
salmon sashimi. The sweet potato & feta taquito
is absolutely delicious, and in my opinion the
meat free dishes, are the best dishes not
only on the menu, but in Liverpool. The
added bonus to the food served here
is that not only is it freshly prepared
when ordered, but all the fish used
is sustainable and any food waste is
either composted or used to generate
energy.
Salmon sashimi
ENTERTAINMENT 8/10
There is no entertainment - it doesn’t need any.
Over such good food the old art of conversation
without distraction flows easily. At every table,
from couples to small groups people were
laughing, chatting, trying each other’s meals
and generally enjoying themselves – this is
atmosphere enough, no extra entertainment
required.
SERVICE 10/10
We were served by Bari – I have to give him a
mention, he was so helpful and knowledgeable
about every dish, he steered my husband
and I - who are novices to Mexican food - to
choosing lots of different dishes that perfectly
complimented each other.
TABLE LOCATION 10/10
We were sat at the front of the restaurant on the
ground floor next to the windows – that I assume
open fully in summer. A great local to people
watch.
WOULD WE
GO AGAIN?
Yes, most
certainly we
will be going
again. Probably
with a group of
friends as we
kick off a night
out in Liverpool
together.
The sounds of the Samba
return to Viva Brazil
115 days after a fire closed its doors, awardwinning
Brazilian restaurant Viva Brazil has
reopened in a blaze of a glory.
The city’s movers and shakers, sporting stars and
celebrities were given an exclusive sneak preview
of the Castle Street restaurant before it opened to
the public.
Viva Brazil first opened on Castle Street in 2010
but required a complete refit following the fire
in early August. A team of builders have been
working around the clock to ensure it was ready
for its relaunch.
The restaurant has been completely overhauled
with a brand new colour scheme, increased bar
capacity, BBQ charcoal grill area and salad island.
Founder and owner of Viva Brazil Restaurants,
Andy Aldrich, said: “We’ve been itching to get the
restaurant back up and running. To achieve this
in such a short space of time is testament to our
sheer desire to open.
Great news! Liverpool is one of UK’s
top regions for entrepreneurship,
regarding business start ups.
Here’s the bad news – our small
business survival rate is amongst
the lowest in the UK! LBC’s vision is
to reverse this woeful trend.
What’s missing is easily accessible, simple, one stop
business support and training in the skills needed
to actually run a business. And not just for start ups,
but throughout the five phases of the business
lifecycle. Of course, training is especially important
during the adolescent years of business. For most
start ups, the skills of the trade are in place at the
outset but there is no
experience of building
a business around those
skills. At LBC we help to
build those skills with a
comprehensive range
of business support,
58
training and education
- face to face, online, in peer groups and in
more formal learning environments. Liverpool
businesses have the entrepreneurial spirit
alright. But, what’s missing is a one stop shop for
previously unheard of levels of support, education
and training, at easily affordable prices, some of
it 100% government funded. This goes for all five
phases of the business lifecycle.
LBC currently has over 1400 members. Basic online
membership is free. However, we are about to
introduce new levels of membership with higher
levels of benefit and support. But again, no fancy
prices! So, as well as supporting start ups, we want
previously unsupported business to know that
it’s their turn now. We look forward to turning the
region’s woeful tide of business failure into a rising
tide of business collaboration and success. Here’s
to more prosperous years ahead.
2016
Will it be a year
to remember?
T
The definition of insanity is to do the
same thing and expect a different
result.
So what do you want to achieve in
2016?
Time just flies by doesn’t it? Remember your new
year’s resolutions for 2015, did you stay focused
on seeing through with your commitments?
Did you deliver the changes you expected? Not
to worry if you didn’t, the great news is you can
now reset, start again and refocus. Dropping the
ball is never a problem if you pick it back up and
start again. It’s not important what you didn’t do,
if you reset and go again.
If you couldn’t fail in 2016 what would you
attempt? I challenge you to take a few minutes to
answer this question.
What is your plan for 2016?
5 absolute keys to a great year are outlined below,
don’t short cut this short cut, you will go
around in circles. Follow these 5 steps to make
2016 outstanding.
The first thing is to take stock, what has gone well
for you this year? What have you done this year
to make you feel proud? I know most of us are
that busy working to pay the bills we seldom stop
to celebrate and appreciate the good things we
have achieved.
1. REFLECT
Write down the things you want to improve and
achieve over the next 12 months. What would
you want to celebrate this time next year? Be
specific and write it down. Keep a copy of your
goals and plans with you or at least somewhere
where you can see it daily. Break your 12 month
plan down to the next 90 days.
2. WRITE DOWN YOUR GOALS
3. CREATE A PLAN
Think about WHAT you need to do. HOW are you
going to do this?. WHEN do you need to do this?
WHERE do these steps take place? WHO can
support your progress, and most importantly
understand WHY you’re doing this. So you have
reflected on 2015 set goals for 2016, wrote down
a plan to achieve. The next absolute key is to
get started. Start and don’t stop until you have
achieved what you set out to do. It’s critical that
you have 90 day mile stones to allow you to
reflect on your progress which will help you to
stay Focused.
4. START
5. STAY FOCUSED
Habits take 28 days to make and to become the
NEW NORMAL, so be patient with yourself and
stay committed. Don’t wait for the lights to turn
green, let’s get a move on and let’s get started.
Do it now.
A journey of a 1000 miles starts with one step.
Let’s take that step and make 2016 a real year to
remember.
CRAIG phillips- DIY-
Hello Lifestyle
Readers,
I’d like to wish
everyone a very happy
new year!
I hope everyone
enjoyed the festive
season and is not
letting the January
blues get you down
too much! It’s set to
be a big year for me
as I start work on my
dream home, which
I will be project
managing from start
to finish and hope
to be ready to move in by the end of the year.
Watch this space!
I recently did some filming for Tile Mountain, an online
store which stocks thousands of wall and floor tiles.
I shot a range of ‘how to’ videos to give people a good
idea of the basics of tiling their own homes – a very
useful skill if you can master it.
Last month, I was pleased to divulge some of my trade
knowledge at the National Painting & Decorating Show
– now in its 21st year – which took place at the Ricoh
Arena in Coventry. As the brand ambassador for Wagner
Spraytech, I was on hand to meet and greet people,
demonstrate the company’s products, and provide
advice on everything related to interior design.
I also had the opportunity to visit the HQ of another
company I work closely alongside, Silverline Tools
which is always a pleasure. You can browse through
their winter catalogue at www.silverlinetools.com
which features over 5000 quality products.
That’s about it from me this month my friends – if your
new year’s resolution is to brush up on your DIY skills,
this month’s tip should give you a push in the right
direction!
All the best,
Craig.
Neglected paint work on external doors and
windows not only looks shabby but will not
protect your woodwork from the elements
and could devalue your home.
Never ever try to paint new gloss straight onto
an existing gloss finish without sanding thoroughly!
Use the sheet sander with a heavy grade sanding
paper to start with then work your way
down to a very fine grade. You will find it’s perfect
to just take the edge off the shiny gloss,
and will help the new undercoat key to the existing
old gloss. You may find you will have to
use a corner sander to help get in the corners
of the mouldings on some doors with decorative
panels.
Dust down the door and you are now ready
to start to apply the first coat of water or oil
based undercoat paint using a 2” paint brush.
Leave to dry for 24 hours.
For a perfect finish, give the new undercoat
another sand down - this time using the sheet
sander with a very fine graded sanding pad.
Before applying the second and final coat of
paint, give it another quick dusting down and
apply the final gloss coat for a perfect professional
finish.
Remember prevention is far better than
the cure.
JANUARY
HAPPY NEW YEAR!
As I enter my eighth year of publishing Lifestyle
magazine I am looking forward to 2016 with hope
and optimism. I don’t have any resolutions because
I don’t have any willpower, but maybe I will try and
be less impatient. I work at full speed pretty much
everyday and my husband has to remind me regularly
that others do not operate at the same pace.
So while I welcome the new year with my usual zest,
I promise to take time to breathe and appreciate all
that I have. It’s of course a time for reflection and
I am extremely fortunate to be content with life.
I have a husband who still makes me laugh after 20
years, gorgeous kids and a warm house. I am also my
own boss, something I never thought was possible
ten years ago when I was in and out of employment
within the media.
With age comes a fine understanding of well,
everything. I have over the last couple of years
banished negativity from my life, from keyboard
warriors who are immediately blocked, to family
members who feel they have the right to put me
down and emotionally beat me up. No one has the
right to make someone else feel bad about
themselves.
So let’s show some more compassion, let’s
encourage each other and if you don’t think you’re
in a place of contentment do something about it.
We are all in charge of our own destiny,we all have
the power to change course. Leave the job you
hate, end the relationship you’re unhappy with, hang
about with people who make you feel good and take
the courageous step to doing something different,
Who knows, you may find a renewed zest for life as
well.
I am incredibly excited for the forthcoming
Liverpool Lifestyle Awards celebrating all the special
people who have set up independent businesses and
are keeping the local economy thriving. Not only is the
night important recognition for these people, but it is
also a night for people to let their hair down. After all
with hard work comes hard partying too!
Keep an eye on all events, as always by following me
