Tony Bareham presents
SEATS OF PLEASURE
This will be the fifth of a series of shows directed by Professor Bareham, all with a similar
format. The previous ones were on Charles Lever, on Lord Byron, Chasing The Cheerless
Gloom (a meditation on Winter in literature and music), and Entrances and Exits: A Tribute
to Shakespeare.
Readings from appropriate literary texts are accompanied by relevant projected images,
and the readings are interspersed with songs and music appropriate to the period/theme.
Musical Director is Eric Boyd.
Seats of Pleasure will take a look at the eighteenth century pleasure gardens as
represented in literature, art and music. A significant number of novelists sent their
characters to Vauxhall or Ranelagh, and the range of experiences – from near rape to
innocent adulation – gives an entertaining cross section of voices and opinions. These
are strengthened by authentic accounts from travellers and visitors, who recorded their
impressions.
Charlie Landsborough
IN CONCERT
Charlie Landsborough has won just about every award possible in the Irish and UK country
scene but country music accounts for only a small part of his repertoire. His music
covers many areas, from beautiful ballads to folk, blues, country, rock ‘n’ roll, pop, gospel
and anthems, showing a depth of compassion and understanding which seems almost
incongruous to his simplistic yet captivating style.
His talent for spinning a yarn offers a fine compliment to his music and gives a sense of
intimacy to his concerts, showing that, in spite of his fame and achievements, he remains
the same warm, down to earth and compassionate.
Saturday 27 February at 8pm
The award-winning Portrush Music Society has enchanted Riverside Theatre audiences for
many years with their talented local cast of actors and singers. Recent productions winning
critical acclaim have included Sister Act, Evita and The Addams Family. This year’s staging of
Lionel Bart’s family musical Oliver! should prove equally popular.
Nothing works on the stage better than a well-crafted tale, and this show, based on Charles
Dickens’s classic novel Oliver Twist, will engage the audience with its pathos and drama. It tells
the story of a young orphan as he travels through the dark underbelly of London society.
A host of familiar characters, ranging from the reprobate to the inspirational, are brought to
life – perhaps larger than life – in this glowing production. The musical score features many
famous numbers including Consider Yourself, Food Glorious Food, As Long As He Needs Me and
It’s A Fine Life. Come and join Fagin, Nancy, The Artful Dodger, Bill Sykes and of course Oliver
himself, and enjoy their potent mix of fun and misery woven into this marvellous production.
Theatre
presents
“There’s a gentleman
living here. He’s
got a birthday today,
and he’s forgotten all
about it. So we’re
going to remind him.
We’re going to give him
a party.”
A shabby boarding house
in a small English seaside
town.
An elderly couple take care
of a solitary guest, who
rarely ventures out. The arrival
of two enigmatic strangers
seems to offer a
welcome distraction from their
mundane existence. But when an impromptu, seemingly innocent birthday party abruptly
turns in to a deadly game of cat and mouse, there are horrifying repercussions.
By turns, cryptic thriller and macabre comedy, The Birthday Party was Harold Pinter’s first
major work and is among the most unusual and absorbing of his plays.
London Classic Theatre presents the first significant touring revival of the twenty-first
century, promising to bring this ground-breaking classic to fresh and exhilarating life.
Based on the book by Spike Milligan;
Directed by Zoë Seaton; Music by Paul Boyd
It’s back by popular demand! Big Telly’s smash hit stage production of Spike Milligan’s
PUCKOON returns for an all-Ireland and UK tour in Spring/Summer 2016. The show’s
sell-out 2009 and remounted 2011 tour had audiences all across Ireland screaming with
laughter at its Goonish blend of theatrical anarchy, musical wit, and impossible plot.
Ireland 1922, and the Ulster Boundary Commission has drawn the new border straight
through the small town of Puckoon. With the church separated from its own graveyard
and drink now thirty percent cheaper in one corner of the pub, life in the newly divided
village will never be the same again. Based on the book by Spike Milligan, this comic
masterpiece is an irreverent and hilarious story which takes the mick, celebrates the
absurd, and paints a picture of a simple life that borders on the ridiculous.
