Cooking
Time: 30-40 mins
Serves 4
Creamy masala
chicken
By AWARD-WINNING Chef Abdus Shahid
A mild chicken curry with plenty of
flavour, best served with Basmati
rice or naan bread. This is a simple
but delicious dish, which is easy to
prepare.
Method
1. Put the chicken, ginger, garlic, chilli powder,
coriander, lime juice and 1 tbsp of oil in a bowl.
Stir, and set aside. Chop the onion, and seed and
chop the chilli.
2. Heat a large shallow pan. Tip in the chicken
and marinade and fry for about 6-8 minutes,
stirring occasionally.
3. Meanwhile, heat the remaining oil in a pan and
fry the onion and chilli for 3-4 minutes until just soft.
Add the turmeric and stir fry for 1 minute. Lower the
heat, pour in the cream and simmer for 2-3 minutes.
Ingredients
• 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts,
cubed
• 3cm piece fresh root ginger, peeled and
chopped
• 2 garlic clove, chopped
• 1 tsp mild chilli powder
• 2 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped
• juice of 1 lime
• 2 tbsp vegetable oil
• 1 onion
• 1 red chilli
• 1 tsp ground turmeric
• 284ml carton double cream
• juice of ½ lemon
• basmati rice and naan bread, to serve.
4. Add the chicken and simmer for 5 minutes, or
until cooked. Season and stir in the lemon juice.
Serve with rice and naan bread.
DAY
By DANIEL FRANCIS
Father’s Day might not be until next
month, but I thought it would be
best to give you some time to think
about and select the best gift.
If your Dad is anything like my mine then his
wardrobe is truly a terrifying sight; one pair
of old jeans for work and play, a selection of
baggy t-shirts and one smart shirt for “special
occasions” (Love you Dad).
I’ve chosen some great ideas to help your dad see
how much you care and / or see how much help
he might need with his style...
FASHION
You can’t go wrong with Calvin Klein
and their Man Eau de Toilette is
one of my favourites. It’s fresh
yet masculine scent and classic
look make it the perfect choice.
The scent is made up of bay
leaf and mint with notes of
amber, musk and sandalwood.
Available in Boots, Superdrug
and The Perfume Shop.
Wallets are out, card holders
are in. They’re smaller, easier
to access and they force
you to only take out what you need;
so when your Dad offers to buy the drinks he
won’t embarrass you by dropping his expired
Blockbuster Card or pulling out that “cute baby
photo”. This Red Herring brown leather options
holds nine cards and is available in Debenhams.
With wedding season almost upon us why not
gift your Dad with some new cufflinks to help
lift that good-for-every-occasion suit. Cufflinks
add sophistication to any look and these paisley
patterned gunmetal pair from Next will add a
touch of subtle flare.
Even if they don’t admit it all Dads aspire to David
Beckham. Help him reach this goal by choosing
something from Mr Beckham’s H&M Bodywear
selection. What’s great about this range is that
there are several different options and styles
to suit almost everyone. Simple essentials from
underwear to sweatpants are available. More
recently, the football star can be seen advertising
The role and responsibilities of a
Bridesmaid!
By Catherine Starling
A wedding is all about
team work so getting
the right people to
support you within
your wedding party is
essential.
In the coming months we will focus
of the wedding party and their
respective duties, this month the
role of your Chef Bridesmaid and
attendants.
Traditionally a Chief Bridesmaid or Maid /Matron of Honour is
the bride’s older sister or very close friend.
It’s a highly responsible role so choose the person who you feel
will help with decision making, has similar ideas, good under
pressure, confident and who knows you the best.
Main roles of a chef bridesmaid are as follows:
• Supporting the bride at all times, decision making, ideas,
giving advice, dealing with upsets etc
• Help with favour making, stationery and finite details
• Accompanying the Bride to dress fittings and shopping
excursions
• Organising a hen night
• Looking after the other bridesmaids and attendants, making
them aware of their duties, checking they have all their
24

WEDDING
accessories and dresses/attire
• Helping the bride to dress on the
morning
• Walking down the aisle directly
behind or in front of the bride
• Lifting, rearranging the train and
veil at the alter
• Holding her bouquet during the
ceremony
• Standing in the receiving line, if
there is one
• Sitting at the top table
• Keeping the dancing going on
the dance floor.
Other attendants:
• Bridesmaids - Assist the chef
bridesmaid with her duties
• Flower Girls – Scatter rose petals
along the aisle for the bride to
walk on
• Page boy / Ring Bearer – Walk
with the flower girl(s) holding
a cushion or object bearing the
wedding rings
There are no limits to the number
of bridesmaids or attendants, have
the number you are comfortable
with. The more ‘entourage’ you
have the more costly it is for
attire and adds to the planning
but it is a great way to delegate
and have people around you to
comfort and support you on your
big day.
Happy planning ...
Claire
Cowling...
With over 20 years’
experience in floral
design...
having created sumptuous wedding flowers
at Suffolk’s most notable wedding venues,
including Hengrave Hall, Blackthorpe Barn
and Ickworth, Claire Cowling at Thrive is an
obvious choice for your flowers. Claire never
fails to surprise and delight with her stunning
work. There is, however, a unique and exciting
new side to Claire’s business…
Last year, Claire opened her new business
premises at a barn conversion in rural Suffolk;
Pakenham to be precise, which has allowed
her a base from which to provide in-depth
consultations with her brides - to make sure
every little detail of their dream wedding
flowers is considered.
The barn has allowed to her expand her
fabulous collection of vases, containers,
candelabras, table runners and a host of other
wedding-based paraphernalia for brides
to buy and hire. There’s even a sweet cart
which can be supplied ready-filled with your
favourite treats, or for you to stock yourself.
It adds a fun element to children’s parties
and even corporate events - there’s an inner
child in all of us!!
The latest addition to Thrive’s collection
is a range of fresh topiary trees. If you’re
going for a rustic and informal, Tuscan style
summer wedding, or perhaps you’re having
a special party this year, standard Olive
topiaries are perfect for the tables or to line
the aisle, with the pots neatly covered in
hessian and finished off with a tulle bow.
So, whether you’re looking for a florist to
create the floral designs of your dreams,
or simply the raw materials to create them
yourself, Thrive is the place to go!
You can find Thrive at 3, Old Hall Barns,
Thurston Road, Pakenham IP31 2NG – not
far from the windmill, or by visiting Claire’s
website: www.thrivefloristry.com. How
Q: with a number one album and the
Arena tour you’ve just finished, does
it seem like the band is in a better
place after all the doubt that kind of
surrounded you guys when Nick left?
Ricky: are we in a better place?
Simon: yes is the answer, and it’s too simple
though. I think the Arena tour, I mean, Ricky has
been continuously busy but the rest of us, since
the Arena tour, have been lazing about for three
weeks. It really, for me because I knew that break
was coming, that seemed like the end of a really,
really like long and sort of hard but good time. So
we started of in, say, kind of January 2013,
getting Vijay and started to write the songs
for the record, writing the record and doing
gigs with Vijay and getting all that worked
out, recording the record, finishing the
record, it coming out, it being number one,
touring it and whatever else.
brilliant and we understand that it’s brilliant
and we’re all very excited and every show we
do is getting bigger and bigger and again it’s
like the graph is turned around a little bit. It’s
weird because, you know how you said it was an
exclamation mark the Arena tour, and it’s funny
because everyone around us is celebrating and
you know, clinking glasses. But when you’re in a
band it’s the realisation that it’s all about the next
thing, it’s like you never really stop and enjoy the
moment and have that kind of like ‘we did it guys’
because you always go ‘yeah, we’ve turned the
ship around, now we have to set sail’
S: almost immediately, well obviously anyway,
but you’ve got to start thinking about the next
And then the Arena tour seemed like the
full stop, you know what I mean, but in a
really great way. Exclamation mark actually
because it was like, triumphant I think and it
just really felt like we done what we wanted
to do, which was just sort of put ourselves
back on course as I think we sort of
definitely meander around a bit around the
fourth album and also with Nick leaving and
with various other things just sort of, I think
we lost our way a little bit and definitely,
definitely felt like the tour and everything,
like, we went to South America with Foo Fighters
just before that, which was great and all touring
festivals over the summer like Glastonbury and all
of it combined, but obviously the Arena tour was
ours, its like we used to always do Arena tours and
then we stopped, and then we did one again and it
was like ‘yes, we’re back’.
R: it is funny though because, although it’s
album and actually got to do all of that, that he’s
described, again and try and do it even better.
R: yeah it’s funny because, on nme.com the other
day, they had a little article about the fact that we’ve
got a new single ‘Falling Awake’ that’s out, and it
said ‘Kaiser Chiefs unveil first song of their next
record, which is out later in the year’ and I was a bit
like ‘whooh, aye’. Yeah, it doesn’t stop for a sec.
MAY 2015 MAY | ISSUE 2015 #31 | ISSUE | BOUNCE #31 FEATURE
Q: with the whole
situation, you know
obviously with Nick
leaving and he was
widely kind of credited
as being one of the main
songwriters, has your
confidence came back
as a band with this past
year with the fact that
the album that you guys
wrote went to number
one?
R: it was a new kind of confidence
because we never individually and
together as the four remaining
members and then when Vijay joined, we never
had that kind of confidence in the fact we could
do it. In fact, when we first had out first rehearsal
without Vijay we didn’t know we could do it, it was
‘lets see if its possible’ and it was. So it’s not like
we got our confidence back, it was like we grew it
from scratch really, I think.
Q: so, how confident were you guys
with your own song writing abilities
then?
R: we didn’t know we could do it, honestly, you
know, I’ve never wrtitten a song without Nick
being in the room and I don’t know if you have,
but nothing you’d ever bring.
S: no, exactly. I think it was the confidence of like,
I always felt we would do it, we just had to work
out how we were gonna do it and you know, it
would work its self out because I felt we had the
talent. But I also felt that, you know sometimes
when you’ve got a football team and you’ve got
a star player, like for instance Ronaldo, but then
he gets injured or he can’t play. And then the
team play amazingly wthout him and you realise
that everyone steps up and everyone fills the gap
because that’s how life works.
R: that’s a good analogy.
S: so that’s what we did basically, we just did it, I
mean we wanted to do it. I think actually, we said
this before, but Nick leaving gave us a new sense
of like motivation and new energy I think. So when
we first started the band, we were all desperate
to be in band and we were desperate like, I don’t
know, get signed or play a certain venue, like play
at Brixton Academy or play at Glastonbury, there
was lots of things. And we’ve done lots and lots of
things in our career, and then we sort of I think get
complacent. Not in a bad way, but just because
some things you’re used to. And then, suddenly
this thing where its like, we had to positively
decide that we wanted to carry on and we had to
30

FEATURE
MAY 2015 MAY | ISSUE 2015 #31 | ISSUE | BOUNCE #31 FEATURE
positively be better and write better songs and do
all this stuff. So it made us hungry again, basically.
know all those ones of the record. Why aren’t you
playing Bows & Arrows’. And it’s like, ‘woah’.
R: you forget how hard you worked in the first
place, you know nostalgia makes it feel like its
luck and right place right time but you forget the
van journeys and all the gigs to go on and all this
kind of stuff. And the fact we didn’t give up when
there was no promise of anything, so why would
you give up when you’ve already got a name that
people know and albums that people love and it’s
just a matter of pushing it over the edge. So we
started working as hard as we did at the beginning
and not just taking it for granted.
S: we didn’t play these because, there were songs
like ‘Roses’, which is at the end of the album, and
‘Cannons’. There was so many songs of the new
album that we wanted to play, and also we felt
like, say if it’s a song like ‘Roses’ which is a sort
of poignant moment, we can’t really play that in
a festival, so it was a chance to play it at Arena’s
when you’ve got your own fans there. We didn’t
play the second single of this record, we didn’t
play it in the set because there just wasn’t enough
time unless we played the whole record.
Q: how’s the album, how’s the new
material went down then on these
tours, any fan favourites that are
sticking out whenever you play
them live that perhaps you wouldn’t
of thought would of?
S: I don’t know about if we wouldn’t of thought
about it. Especially on the Arena tour we just did
because we felt, eventhough it was a long time
after the album, we felt like that was the tour
for the album because we didn’t do one. So we
played a lot of new songs and it was noticeable
how they went down very well. We finished the
main set with ‘Coming Home’. I think a lot of
people highlighted in reviews, which I try not to
read, and other people, family and all that telling
you, that ‘Coming Home’ and ‘Falling Awake’,
which is the brand new song, were like highlights
of the set along with the classics. But, I feel like,
I’ll always want to play ‘Ruby’ and I’ll always want
to play ‘I Predict a Riot’ but its great, you’ve got
to have new stuff coming in there.
Q: so do you think that was a benefit
then, if like you say essentially doing
the album tour near enough a year
after the album came out, it gives
people a good amount of time to sit
with the album, you know instead
of you put the album out and you’re
in the middle of the tour when it
comes out.
R: I was gonna say, from the fans, the only
criticism we really got was not playing some of
the new ones. It was like ‘why aren’t you playing
One More Last Song, why aren’t you playing, you
31
MAY 2015 MAY | ISSUE 2015 #31 | ISSUE | BOUNCE #31 FEATURE
R: it was an indication of everything we’d
done and what we wanted to achieve, which
was basically not sit on the laurels of the first
two records for the rest of our lives and create
something new that people felt in their hearts as
much they probably did with the old two. And
we’ve done that, and I don’t think many people do
that, or get away with it.
Q: as well, its ten years since
Employment.
Q: your fellow judge Tom Jones is
also doing a few of the race course
shows as well this summer. Has it
ever come up in a conversation
recently?
R: no. It’s funny because we talk about
everything and nothing. Like, I’m not one of
those people that’s gonna ask Will.i.am to remix
a record or Rita to appear on ‘Falling Awake’.
R: ten years to the week, yeah.
Q: now, I apologise for the next
batch. Honestly there’s only like
three of them, but it’s gonna be
the obligatory Voice ones.
R: I was gonna say, thing is now, I’m telling
these kids on that TV show that I do that,
all these things that I’ve learnt about, don’t
forget to enjoy it. Don’t forget to appreciate
every single moment and also the thing we
were saying about, if you want it you can
have a career in music. The level of which
you’re at, you might not be U2, but you can
do it. You might have to have another job
to sustain your career in music, but you can
do it. And, as soon as I kind of like thought
about reminding myself that, that yeah I
might have to get another job one day to keep
the band that I love being in something I still do
and think about every day. And then when I did
because I got a job on the telly show, but then
it’s all a gamble isn’t it, it could have gone terribly
wrong.
W: with that, obviously there’s the story about
David Grohl doing a swift turnaround when he was
saying about reality music shows and was like ‘oh
yeah, well actually I am a judge’.
R: ‘cause essentially, we’re still the band we
always were and we’re a band, we’re pretty
normal. You know all these collaborations and all
these things that go on, it’s not very us, I don’t
think we’re that into that kind of thing. We like
the unit we’ve got, it’s worked for a long time
and even though we might have had a hiccup
when Nick left, I think we kinda pulled it back
together but we, I don’t think it’s very us. Saying
that, you can whip that out of the archives when
we do do a collaboration.
Q: so just moving on to the race
course shows. So you’ve obviously
done some race course shows
before, do they differ much from
your normal kind of tours you do or
like the festival performances?
R: people are very drunk.
R: well we’re not daft, you know, we can judge
what we need to do at certain times and thing is,
its becoming weird because now the greatest hits
are, I mean we’ve got a song on the radio at the
moment and ‘Coming Home’ was a big song in my
life, and people generally love the new stuff. So it’s
becoming like we had a blip in the middle where
we don’t really play anything off the fourth record
eventhough it’s got some of the best stuff we’ve
ever wrote on it but it’s just….
S: they are different, but that’s not to say its bad
different, just different different. Because there’s
no, there’s only us that’s the thing. So there’s
racing and drinking, and everyones quite dressed
up and they’re all on a big night out and it’s all very
good. But there’s no support band, it’s just sort of,
we’re kind of the main event I guess, which is nice.
R: it’s kinda like a wedding, because you’ve got
guys with their ties around their heads going
mental. I really enjoy it, it’s a different vibe to
anything else we’ve done but we’re coming back
to do more so we must enjoy it.
Q: so are you normally into your
horse racing then?
S: no not at all. Not every single one but most
of them just go and put a couple things on, see
what’s going on, try and win some money because
that’s part of the fun. One of our crew guys, it’s
his favourite gig of the year because he loves it.
He stayed out doing all sorts of things all day, not
setting anything up just betting.
Q: would you approach these shows
differently, because I guess it would
a lot more of a greatest hits rather
than, like you were saying, trying
to focus on a lot of the new
material or?
S: no-one (knows it)
R: it was that it was quite self indulgent, you know,
we kind of forgot about the people we actually
care about, which is the people that care about us.
That make sense?
Q: yeah, your fans.
R: yeah, I mean I don’t like to use the word fans
because it makes me seem big headed.
S: I think we always think about the people
watching that in every gig, not just these gigs.
We always like, ‘cause we want to put on our best
show, we want everyone to like, have the night of
their lives or whatever. And the arena tour I think
to some extent, a little bit, got a lot of screens and
tricks and it’s your audience, they’re all watching
you. So I think you can do a little bit more but we
always try and we never shy away from playing the
hits really, anyway.
R: no, we don’t want a moment where it’s not,
we’re greedy basically. We want everyone to have
the night of their lives and we want them to not for
one minute get, you know, there’s 20,000 people
out there and I’m worried about one of them going
to the bar, you know what I mean, because I don’t
want the venues to make any more money out
of us than they’re making (laughs). So, yeah I just
want everyone to, you know, I want them to go
away thinking that’s the best gig they’ve ever seen.
Q: and have you got any rituals or
anything before you go the stage or
during the day?
R: there’s hundreds of them.
R: yeah, but you know, as rituals go, we usually
have a disco before we go on.
S: yeah, nothing crazy, we just like to be on our
own, be just the band, no other strangers. Play
some music, get you know, pumped.
S: it’s getting ridiculous.
R: I’m gonna have to have like a watershed
moment with all of them.
S: a cull.
R: and have a cull of the rituals because, yeah
we’re all very superstitious but we’re all musicians
so we’re all weirdo’s anyway, so.
R: it is funny though, I mean it’s a room full of
thirty somethings, late thirty somethings, all
dancing like it’s a kids disco.
S: it’s like a school disco.
R: yeah, it’s like a school disco, no girls.
S: we should get a DJ, we should get a proper DJ
on there. Like a proper school disco DJ.
R: oh, like with the red light and stuff, okay.
They’re really cheap though, we can probably get
one for 50 quid, let’s do that.
R: no, we need a proper person there with a mic,
what he needs doing. You know with like those,
you can win half a bottle of cava if you can blow
up a balloon really fast. First person to win the
other half.
R: I’d love that, that would be great. Anyway.
way of visiting an area which doesn’t really cater
for bands that play for over a hundred people.
I was there on a stag-do last year, I hate stag-do’s.
They’re awful.
Q: where abouts?
R: Osea Island, it’s quite nice. You can only get
to it at certain times of day because it floods and
Q: Newmarket, obviously it’s got
a bit of a catchment area of like
Cambridge and Norwich and
Ipswich and Essex. Have you got
any good memories from these
places, like in the early days of
the band? You know obviously
you had the DVD around in
Southall in the little cinema
there.
R: in the early days of the band, we travelled.
S: we did go to Norwich with (the Ordinary
Boys) on that first tour and it was good. We
haven’t been there that much to Norwich, I don’t
think we’ve ever been to Ipswich. We played at
Cambridge though at the Corn Exchange, that was
good. We haven’t been enough, we didn’t go to
that area at all in the last tour. So it would be good
to go and play to the people, hopefully they’ll all
turn out.
R: it’s a brilliant idea actually, it’s a great place to
go, to visit so they don’t have to come and see
us at the places that, because bands go to these
usual places and there’s probably like only like
between 5 and 10 of these areas that are really
popular. And it’s really good that we’ve found this
then you know, it’s on an estuary. So we couldn’t
get off, and there were sixteen men on this island
who couldn’t get off for 24 hours. And so I was like
‘there’s gonna be murder or worse’.
#31 | HEALTH
ISSUE #31
& WELLBEING
Questions
for Dr Bella Smith
1) How do I boost my Vitamin D
levels?
The clocks have gone forward, the sun is starting
to shine and spring has sprung. This is the perfect
time to boost our vitamin D levels after the long
dark winter as we absorb 80% of vitamin D
from the sun and only 20% from our diet. There
is a fine line between being safe in the sun and
allowing the benefits of the sun for our bodies.
At this time of year the sun is not
strong and being out in the morning
or afternoon with little or no suncream
on is ok and allows us to boost our
vitamin D. As the summer approaches
we will need stronger factor sun cream.
2) I want to try to get
pregnant, what should I do?
It’s very exciting when you decide that it is the
time to start a family and healthy living is key
to optimising your chances. Eating healthily,
exercising, stopping smoking and cutting down
alcohol are all very important for conception.
If you are slightly overweight by losing a few
pounds may increase your chances of regular
ovulation and thus increase your chances of
getting pregnant. Boys should try to wear loose
underwear as sperm become more active and
mobile when they are not too hot. Taking vitamin
supplements can help with overall health but
make sure that these are ‘pregnancy friendly’
for the woman. Use the help of ovulation kits or
phone apps to enable you to be more sexually
active during your most fertile period. Finally give
it some time - this is a natural process that can
take some months or even years. Depending on
your circumstances enjoy this process but seek
help or advice from your GP if you feel things are
moving too slowly.
3) What can I do about Excessive
Sweating?
Hyperhidrosis is a common condition where a
person sweats excessively often
from there armpits, hands or
feet and starts to interfere with
their daily life. Sometimes
there are other underlying
causes for the sweating such
as the menopause, anxiety or
medication, but often there is
no cause. A healthy lifestyle
involving exercise, a healthy
weight, good sleep and a
well-balanced diet may help reduce
sweating. Other advice includes avoiding alcohol,
caffeine, hot drinks or spicy food and wearing
light-weight light-coloured loose-fitting clothing
may also help. There are good deodorants that
you can try some over the counter and others
prescribed by your GP. Some people benefit from
Iontophoresis for sweating of their hands and
feet, and this involves a weak electric current
that temporarily blocks the sweat glands. This
can be very useful for hands and feet. If you are
A Suffolk
Farmer’s
Legacy
BY THE HARMONY CENTRE
What was once a cowshed is now The Harmony Centre,
a beautiful building situated on Walpole Hatch Farm in
the heart of the Suffolk countryside.
The centre opened in June
2001 and was created by David
Gillett and Jacqui Beacon who
were leaders and teachers in
environmental energy research
and balancing, and has been built
with some of the most up to date
environmental technology of the
time including triple glazing and
ground source heating.
The centre is not only environmentally friendly
it also has a calmness about it. Everyone who
enters the building comments on how peaceful
the place feels.
Over the years the Harmony Centre has steadily
grown into a well-known and well established
complementary health centre boasting eighteen
therapists and teachers. On average 500 people
pass through the centre each month taking
advantage of the healing benefits of some of the
28 different therapies and 8 classes available. Not
bad for an old cowshed.
People are increasingly taking responsibility
for their own wellbeing by turning towards
complementary therapy for a more natural, drug
free approach. They come to improve wellness,
learn how to relax, feel energised, and deal
with mental/emotional issues. There are also
therapies offered here that help with bodily pain,
and classes that improve flexibility, strength and
Treat your
feet
Summer is finally on its way, time
to give those forgotten feet an
airing and after many months in
boots and thick socks, or tights,
they are no doubt feeling swollen,
tight and extremely dry!!
Why not give your feet a treat and try the
wonderful benefits of either a Traditional Thai
Foot Massage, or a Hot Stone Foot Massage,
available at the self centre. You may well find
yourself skipping out the door and looking
forward to hunting those sandals out!!
So what is a Traditional Thai Foot Massage?
It is a unique therapy that combines acupressure,
energy balancing and stretching with applied
yoga exercises. Whereas most traditional western
and eastern massage practises focus on tissue
manipulation and the working of the muscles and
joints, Thai massage barely touches on either of
these. It is more a manipulation of the pressure
points, energy lines, and basic body forces which
together produce a highly therapeutic effect.
Massage is applied to the lower legs and feet
using thumbs and hands, together with work on
acupressure points incorporating both reflexology
techniques and a Thai wooden acupressure tool,
heated booties and a natural aromatherapy balm
are also used to enhance the treatment and
soften the feet.
Traditional Thai Foot Massage may be effective in
relieving various dysfunctions and disorders; but
it is also a wonderful treatment to promote overall
health, increase energy and to provide a general
sense of wellbeing.
A wonderful treatment to promote overall health, increase
energy and to provide a general sense of wellbeing.
What is Hot Stone Foot Massage?
The ancient healing art of stone therapy using
various massage techniques and warm stones
relaxes the body at its deepest level and is
effective in creating harmony and balance.
For more info on the health
benefits of yoga, pilates, tai
chi, qi gong, meditation &
complementary therapies.
The heat from the stones penetrates to a
deeper level and may reach up to 7-8cms into
the superficial layer of muscle; bringing about
physiological changes as well as influencing
the body’s internal energy flow (Chi), therefore
bringing a balance to both body and mind.
Reflexology and massage of the legs is a perfect
way to nurture our bodies and ourselves.
Incorporating stones into a treatment can
enhance the power of this contact.
WOOLPIT COMPLIMENTARY
What is
Sciatica?
Sciatica is a general term used to describe pain, tingling, numbness or even
weakness in the leg. Originating from the lower back, it travels through the
buttock and along the sciatic nerve in the back of the leg.
Pronounced ‘sigh-at-ih-kah’, sciatica is
symptomatic of an underlying medical
condition. This could be a lumbar herniated disc,
degenerative disc disease or spinal stenosis.
It can present itself in a number of the following
ways:
• Persistent pain in the buttock or leg, on one
side (very rarely both)
• Worsened pain when sitting
• Creating a sensation of burning or tingling
• Weakness, numbness or difficulty moving the
leg or foot
• Painful sharpness when walking or standing
Common treatments and therapy include
Acupuncture, Sport and Remedial Massage
Therapy, Osteopathy and Physiotherapy.
Depending on the condition that is causing
the symptom of sciatica, you shouldn’t have to
experience pain in the long-term.
So be sure to get it checked out and as with any
element of your health and wellbeing, get to the
root of the problem.
Frequency of pain and discomfort can vary and
when constant, can be incapacitating. Depending
on the cause the location, frequency and severity
may differ.
Overall, the vast majority of people who
experience sciatica can gain relief from the
pain, within as little as a few weeks or months.
If you would like to know more or to book a free initial assessment, please call Woolpit Complementary
Paddy & Scott’s
coffee blends - part two...
To continue last month’s theme where
we looked at the knowledge of coffee
and how much we actually know about
where and how it is grown I wanted to
introduce our clever dripper coffees.
These are all purchased from smaller, artisan
growers in smaller batches with limited
availability, which makes these coffees highly
sought after. All are single estate and have been
chosen due to the quality and complexity of
flavour.
Why do we use single origin coffees for
our Clever Dripper?
Our Clever Dripper Coffees have complex,
flavours produced by precise brewing techniques
(fine filter), which extracts the real flavours from
the coffee. These delicate flavours are sometimes
lost in the high-pressure extraction process of an
espresso coffee.
Our fine filter coffees
Are strictly single origin coffees grown in
microclimates, within rich soils and the ideal
rainfall patterns, to produce a genuine quality
coffee.
What do they taste profile?
Delightful aroma, pleasant acidity, full body, and
delicate sweetness; a combination that results in a
balanced and flavourful coffee. These coffees are
akin to fine single malt.
Wines
of South
Africa
It is believed that human life
started in South Africa about
150,000 to 200,000 years ago.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
DNA analysis supports this. A
77,000 year old mathematical
tablet was found in a cave near
Blombas in the Southern Cape,
From this long history of human activity it took
until the 1600’s for vine growing and winemaking
to take effect. Jan Van Riebeck was the first
Dutch Governor in 1652 to grow grapes, which
led to making wine in 1659. This settlement
supported Dutch Traders journeying on their way
to the East for the spice trade.
In 1688 French Huguenots arrived and settled in
Franchhoek, nowadays a top wine area. It is not
surprising then that most grapes grown nowadays
are of Classic European varieties and mainly
French in origin.
Constantia near Cape Town by the 18th Century
had acquired an international reputation
mentioned by Jane Austin and also drunk by
Napoleon on Saint Helena. Furthermore it was
cuttings from South Africa that were used to start
the Australian wine industry in 1788.
Vineyards
Most vineyards are situated in the Coastal region
with famous districts such as Stellenbosch, Paarl,
Franschhoek, Constantia, Walker Bay and many
others. They all lay in the Western Cape with
Capetown being the dominant City. The grape
varieties include Chenin Blanc ( the most planted)
, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet
Sauvignon, Merlot, Shiraz ( also called Syrah) and
a special one called Pinotage
Pinotage
The Pinotage was
developed for South
Africa in 1925 from
a crossing of Pinot
Noir and Cinsault.
The Cinsault used to
be called the Hermitage,
thus using a half of each
name Pinotage was born. The
first use commercially was in 1941 and although
initially there were problems but by 1991 was
rated as a top grape with its rich and spicy wines.
Most harvesting is carried out by hand due to the
difficult terrain, which carries with it the benefit
of better quality control. During the ripening
season the grapes get eaten by various animals,
particularly baboons. Initially the red stains
on their hands scared them off but gradually
got used to it. Staff had to be employed to
throw stones at them to deter them. This was
dangerous as the baboons soon learnt to throw
them back.
Climate and Soils
The climate is good for grape growing due to the
cooling effect of the two oceans, The Atlantic
and The Indian. Soils vary over the area with
sandstone, granite and shale. The bedrock is shale
which has no fossils thereby indicating it must be
500 million years old.
Organisation
The Winelands are broken down into regions,(
some of which have been mentioned) smaller
districts, wards and individual estates.
The Co-operative Wine Growers Association
(KWV) was formed in 1918 to regulate the wine
industry which was suffering from massive
overproduction. This over time became a sort of
State run industry. Since the changes that took
place in 1990 and Nelson Mandela became
President, more individual Estate wines
are being produced leading to
higher qualities.
Certification
One thing to watch out
for is the seal of Origin
which is placed over
the neck of the bottle.
This guarantees the origin,
grape variety, and vintage as
shown on the label.
Enjoy South African Wine
A well known food for bush tucker is Biltong, an
air dried beef that is very strong in flavour. It is
available so worth trying with Pinotage which
should match it.
As the grapes tend to have come from France in
general try the following comparisons.
A Loire Valley Chenin Blanc like Vouvray , but dry,
compared to a South African Chenin Blanc.
A Pinot Noir from France compared to a Pinotage
and see what difference the Cinsault has made to
it. You may not find a pure Cinsault wine.
Compare any Chardonnays between France and
South Africa.
Try to have them both oaked or unoaked to make
a fair comparison.
BOUNCE FEATURE
Catering
with a difference…
Bounce Magazine chats with Matt
Phillips owner of M Phillips
Dining about his personal fine
dining catering service.
Passionate chef and food enthusiast
Matt Phillips provides a fine dining
experience at the comfort of your
own home or selected venue. Now,
how many of us have dreamed of
this whilst cooking for family or
friends?
As well as having your very own chef for the
night, your table will be laid; your tableware is also
provided, making your evening hassle free.
After setting up his company M Phillips Dining
can cater for any occasion or event. Whether it be
an elegant ‘fine dining experience’ in the comfort
of your own home, birthday celebration, canapé
reception or wedding breakfast. We caught up
with Matt to ask him some questions about his
company.
64

MAY 2015 | ISSUE #31 |
FOOD AND DRINK
Q: Matt, when did you get into
cooking?
A: I’ve always enjoyed cooking and, aged 16; I got a
job at a small restaurant in Clacton with about 30
covers. I worked at the restaurant for three years
and really learned my trade there. I loved the hustle
and bustle of service.
Q: How did you advance, taking this
passion further in your career?
A: For three years I worked at Le Talbooth in
Dedham, my role included cooking for special
events including weddings at outdoor functions.
Q: What made you start your own
business?
A: After working as a Sous Chef at Le Talbooth
I gained experience in managing the kitchen,
organising menus and cooking at outdoor events
as well as working in the restaurant. When I could
do this for someone else this was when realised I
wanted to create my unique service.
Q: How is M Phillips Dining
different?
A: I offer a fine dining service in the comfort of your
own home. We try to make it totally hassle-free,
and offer everything as part of the price. As well as
having your own personal chef we set up the table
as standard. The best part is there is no limited
guest number and we supply experienced waiting
staff as well as personalised menu cards for the
event.
Q: If we wanted to hire you how
does it work?
A: We deliver a personal service throughout, first of
all, we ask if you have any dietary requirements and
what sort of dishes you actually enjoy eating. Then
we send over some menu ideas. The client gets a
lot of input, so it’s a completely bespoke service,
free of charge.
Q: Do you have a signature dish?
A: It has to be our ‘Beef Wellington’ it’s quite
theatrical as we carve it at the table. People see it
coming in and they’re impressed.
Q: Ok we need to stop talking about
food now, so the all important
question what will this cost?
A: The fine dining at home service, which is
available across East Anglia, costs £48.95 per head
for six courses. We offer a range of traditional
catering menus for events, such as weddings and
birthday celebrations.
BY SAM HUNT
Snaking down the winding drive
you’re met with a breathtaking
sight. The broad Tudor mansion
is nestled in a natural hollow with
sweeping grounds. Red brick
gables stand shoulder-to-shoulder,
topping large windows and
sprouting ornate chimneys. Cast
your eyes down and they settle on a
dark oak door…
Entering, you walk down an historic corridor with
Tudor arches. Flanked with a suit of armour, large
oil paintings and mounted stags heads, I was
itching to learn about the history of the hotel.
The staff members were ever so friendly and
eager to explain how the hotel owed it’s illustrious
past to over 520 years of the Seckford family
heritage.
Thomas Seckford was believed to have begun
construction of the hall, with his son, also
Thomas completing the Hall as it stands today.
The latter was known as Thomas the Settler,
after consolidating his estates in Suffolk. We
learned how The Manor of Seckford and the
accompanying title can be traced back to the
reign of Edward 1, Hammer of the Scots!
Shown to our room ‘The Lower Granary’: a night
would hardly be enough...
Seckford Hall – Steeped in History...
clearly much
loved
“Snaking down the winding drive you’re met with
a breathtaking sight. The broad Tudor mansion is
nestled in a natural hollow with sweeping grounds.”
A capacious sitting room with large double doors
revealed the bedroom, complete with four-poster!
There were two bathrooms, one with a Jacuzzi
bath, a dressing room, and even a spare room.
Whilst the latter was probably underutilized, we
were sure to enjoy relaxing in the Jacuzzi, with it’s
own flat screen TV.
The current owners advocate that the hall is a
home and are happier when the hotel is full of
people. Indicative of this, guests are made to feel
at home and are able to dine in many areas around
the hotel including the bedrooms, suites, bar,
gardens, lounge areas, and of course the 2 rosette
restaurant.
Dining in Seckford’s 1530 Restaurant we were
presented with a mouth-watering, seasonal
menu. Kicking off proceedings, I opted for the
Slow Cooked Blade of Beef with Braised Onions,
equally good reviews.
balance struck; blending history and Elizibethan
splendour, guests are able to enjoy modern day
2 rosette 1530 restaurant. Combined with stunning
spend a break away, a business trip, or even host a
wedding! We had lovely stay in tranquil surrounds
with genuinely friendly and accommodating staff
and look forward to visiting again soon.
The Roast Tenderloin of Pork, Potato Fondant,
Savoy Cabbage, Dried Ham and Cider Sauce
came highly recommended. It lived up to it’s
billing and was indeed wonderfully tender.
Rachel was all smiles and delighted with her,
beautifully presented choice of Pan Roast Guinea
Chocolate and Salted Caramel Fondant, Pistachio
Seckford Hall is clearly much loved. The current
owners have gently developed the building while
being careful to retain its heritage. There is a great
By Matt hulland
Travel
While visiting the Northern Thai town of Chiang Mai,
we met a few people out and about and the one thing
they had in common was their love of Pai.
Whenever we asked why it is so
great, no-one could quite tell us but
they all unanimously agreed, “It’s
awesome”.
To get to Pai you have to ride a bus from Chiang
Mai along a wonderful scenic mountain road. Well,
wonderful if you don’t suffer from travel sickness.
The staunchest of stomachs
struggle on that road as bus
drivers take on the 762 twists,
turns and hairpins on the 3 hour
drive with the speed, sadly not
skill, of Lewis Hamilton. If you
are brave enough to keep your
eyes open you will see some
spectacular scenery.
When we arrived, pretty
shaken, we were slightly hungry
so set off to find some food
and discovered a nice little
Who doesn’t love Pai?
local place with delights such
as pork blood soup with pig
entrails on the menu. Given the delicate state of our
digestive systems, we decided to leave that dish for
another day!
So why is Pai so awesome? Well the streets of the
little sleepy town flow peacefully with a healthy mix
73
of tourists and locals. Whether it’s the relaxed mountain
air or a lack of tourist attractions meaning there is no
pressure from touts trying to sell you their latest trips,
it a haven of calm. There are coffee shops, bars and a
busy night market. A lazy river splits the town and you
can hire tubes to spend a relaxing afternoon floating
down stream, Pai is just nice. After our weekend
relaxing in Pai it was time to head back down the
mountain with only 762 bends and demonic bus drivers
in our way. Luckily this is where we
discovered the highlight of the whole Pai
experience.
There is a company that will transport
your bags for you so you can ride
a moped back to Chaing Mai where
your bags will be waiting for you. An
opportunity to ride a moped through
some of the most stunning mountain
scenery Thailand has to offer, stopping
off at your leisure to snap some paps as
opposed to riding on the death bus … it’s
highly recommended.
Matt is a travel writer sharing stories of
his trips with us.
He has a website set up for travel advice that can be
found at www.matthulland.com and has two books
currently available on Amazon with a third and fourth
in production.

Stem Cells have arrived at SK Clinic + Spa ...
The future of skincare has arrived at SK
Clinic + Spa, in the form of Stem Cells!
The quest for the ultimate anti-ageing solution
has always been one of the biggest challenges in
skincare. However recently, Plant Stem Cells are
leading the way in skincare innovation, results, and
benefits. This month, SK Clinic + Spa will launch
Pevonia’s new Stem Cells Phyto-Elite collection
and treatment.
What is a Phyto Stem Cell?
A Phyto Stem Cell is actually a Plant Stem Cell.
Unlike human stem cells, every plant cell can turn
into a stem cell which has the ability to regenerate
new leaves, stem, flowers and seeds.
How can Phyto Stem Cells help our
Skin?
Selected Plant Stem Cells can be targeted to
work on specific tissue Stem Cells in humans,
such as the skin. The Argan Tree Stem Cells can
stimulate lethargic Dermal Stem Cells and induce
differentiation into new fibroblasts to increase
matrix densification. It has also been found that
Comfrey Root Stem Cells can “wake up” sluggish
Epidermal Stem Cells to reconstitute and resurface
the Epidermis.
With its two unique stem cell sources and a
concentration of stem cells that is five to ten times
higher than what is currently available, the Pevonia
Stem Cells Phyto-Elite collection reduces the look
of wrinkles while increasing firmness and providing
smoother and more radiant looking skin.
The luxurious Stem Cells Phyto-Elite Freeze-
Dried Face Treatment, available at SK from 1 May
at a special launch offer of £90 – usually £120,
redefines the anti-ageing facial. Visibly reducing
lines and wrinkle depth, it delivers a smoother skin
surface with improved firmness, and long-term
protection of the skin’s naturally repairing stem
cells.
All Pevonia products are made with natural and organic extracts, are free from alcohol, gluten, paraben,
lanolin, mineral oil, PABA and sodium lauryl sulfate, non-GMO and Mother Earth Approved.
For more information about the new and exciting Stem Cells treatment, please
The Hottest Hair
As the Summer approaches it’s all about
I would recommend using a primer
from the same brand as your
foundation if you can, as they
often work better together, but in
saying this, a good primer
should work with other
brands too.
If you like a glow, I would
recommend Dior’s Glow maximiser
Dior’s Forever
foundation is a full
coverage, you can build it without it
caking, but you can use it lightly to
still see your skin through it.
This is the foundation I
used to wear when I
trained in musical
theatre, wearing it on
stage and it would still
be perfect after hours
of dancing. This gives a flawless
finish which lasts.
the Touche Eclate, giving your
skin a brightness with a dewy
finish.
Giorgio Armani luminous silk
is an oil free foundation with
a silky smooth texture giving
luminosity. This is a medium
to full coverage, again being
able to layer it for your
desired finish.
If you love taking Selfies,
but don’t want to get that
whiteness that camera
flashes can create, Dior’s Star
Foundation is the one you
want. With the hollow silicon
beads in it, it means that the
light goes into the beads and comes back out,
rather than the light bouncing off of it creating
the white effect. It is a medium Coverage, but
again is buildable.
With any foundation I would recommend
trying it out before if you can.
Either ask someone on the counter to put it
on you and go check it in natural light, or get a
sample of it to try at home.
With the premium brands you are paying a fair
amount, but they are worth the money if you get
the right one for your skin type
and what you want to achieve
from the finish.
Lancomes Teint Idole Ultra 24
hour is pretty much the same as
the Dior’s Forever, full coverage
with being able to build it, yet
still being able to see your skin
through it, and long lasting.
YSL Touche Elcate is a medium to full coverage,
like the two before you can build it up to give a
fuller coverage. This is the foundation to match
SUMMER IS ON IT’s WAY
By Kate Lines
Kates Top Tip for May:
Plant out cannas and
dahlias
As bulbs fade and herbaceous
borders grow in leaps and bounds,
it is now clear that summer is
approaching.
Sowing and planting out bedding can begin,
depending on regional weather variations, and you
can take softwood cuttings.
It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing
regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer
temperatures this month brings.
Flowers
Tubs can be planted up with summer bedding in
milder areas. In colder areas further north or at high
altitudes, it is advised to wait until early June, or until
all risk of frost has passed.
Divide clumps of herbaceous perennials that you
want to propagate. Bamboos and clumps of bulbs
or rhizomes can be divided in the same way. Cutting
back clumps of spring-flowering perennials such as
Pulmonaria and Doronicum can encourage a fresh
flush of foliage.
Top jobs this month:
1. Watch out for late frosts. Protect tender plants
2.Earth up potatoes, and promptly plant any still
remaining
5. Regularly hoe off weeds
6. Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm
days
7. Mow lawns weekly
8. Check for nesting birds before clipping hedges
3. Plant out summer bedding at the end of the
month (except in cold areas)
9. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils
and other spring-flowering bulbs
4. Collect rainwater and investigate ways to
recycle water for irrigation
10. Watch out for viburnum beetle and lily beetle
grubs
THIS GIRL
can
sponsored by Abbeycroft Leisure
BY Helen Bye, Fitness Instructor, Bury St Edmunds
Leisure Centre
The This Girl Can movement is
encouraging women of all shapes,
sizes and backgrounds to get
out and get moving! With this in
mind, let’s look at the barriers
that women must overcome when
starting to exercise.
What do I wear?
We’re all guilty of overthinking our wardrobe
choices occasionally and exercise wear is no
different. Trust me though, it’s not all lycra, crop
tops and hideously expensive trainers. The only
key is comfort. If you can move in it and feel
comfortable, you should wear it (although no
jeans!). At Abbeycroft Leisure, our classes and
gym are filled with women all wearing whatever
they feel good in.
Everyone’s going to be looking
at me.
I’m sure you’re a stone cold fox but honestly?
Most people are concentrating on their own
workout. Yes, they may notice someone running
next to them, but they certainly aren’t judging
what you’re wearing or how fast you’re going.
Emma Witcherly came along to Bury St Edmunds
Leisure Centre having already lost five stone,
but she still felt larger than other women. Emma
says: “I was worried everyone would be looking
at me and my comfy clothing, lycra isn’t made
in my size. Once I started though, everyone was
96

MAY MAY 2015 2015 | ISSUE | ISSUE #31 #31 | SPORT
SPORT
encouraging and I gained confidence. I soon
realised that people weren’t looking at me,
they were all in their own workout zone.”
How do I know what I’m
doing is right?
It’s perfectly normal to be worried about
technique and you may think everyone
else knows what they’re doing except you.
Remember! Everyone started at the same
place – everyone had their first session in
the gym, their first exercise class, their first
game of hockey. You will be surrounded
by people who will be happy to offer tips,
pointers or support if you ask for it. At
somewhere like Abbeycroft
Leisure, we always have staff on
hand to help and you never start
the gym without a full induction
including how to use our
equipment. Modern technology means
most machines are just push to start –
there’s no falling off treadmills like you see
on youtube! We would never suggest you
do anything you’re not comfortable with.
much fun and you’ll encourage each other
through friendly competition. It’s easier
to exercise when there’s someone you’ve
agreed to meet; you don’t want to let your
friends down (although you shouldn’t
let yourself down either). If you do start
your health and fitness journey on your
own, you’ll soon find a whole bunch of
likeminded people and you certainly won’t
feel alone.
It’s too expensive.
It doesn’t cost a penny to grab some
friends and go for a brisk walk around
the neighbourhood. You can do plenty of
exercise for free. If the gym is something
you do want to look into, it’s around £1 per
day and is no more expensive per month
than a new pair of shoes. Most gyms will do
referral offers or joining promotions so you
can make it even cheaper by joining at the
right time.
I don’t want to do it alone.
Bring a friend! Working out together is so
ACTION MAN
Does Air Hop...
By Ross ‘Action Man’ Wishart
Action Man has taken our great
magazine’s name a bit too literally
with a visit to Air Hop Trampoline
Park.
My eyes lit up when I walked into the colourful
10,000sqft warehouse in Guildford that was
wall to wall trampolines, an Action Man’s idea of
heaven!
Trampoline parks are popping on all over the
place and are very popular, even late on a midweek
evening the place was still very full but that
didn’t stop Action Man’s Army! Rob, Tom, Kevin,
Dan and AM donned our Air Hop non-slip socks
and following the brief safety video we leapt
straight in.
An hour long session costs £10, we actually
arrived early so thankfully bought 2 as the first
hour flew by with plenty to keep you occupied.
Half the space is taken up with a bounce free for
all, 50+ trampolines including on the walls where
you can leap, lunge and laugh to your heart’s
content.
You then have the foam pit where you can
practice your tumbles safe in the knowledge of a
cushioned fall to your mistimed landings.
The basketball slam dunk zone gives you the
ability to soar like Jordan and dunk like Shaq
a mere pipe dream previously for anyone of a
similar diminutive stature. Finally there is the
very popular dodge ball arena, several angled
trampolines are the ideal platform to dodge,
duck, dip, dive and dodge your opponents
inbound balls. All activities done to a suitable
bouncing soundtrack pumped out throughout the
building.
We knew about the stories of serious injuries
at similar venues but this site was very well
marshalled by the staff coupled with mutual
respect from the other bouncers everyone
thoroughly enjoyed their Air Hop adventure.
A few ill-judged flips and the subsequent poor
landings from yours truly resulted in some aching
muscles the following day but that’s why they call
me Action Man! It’s also a great form of exercise
without even really knowing it, we were having
too much fun to realise!
We’ve got some ActionManTV footage of
our adventure at Air Hop on the Action Man
Facebook page so check it out www.facebook.
com/bouncemagazinesactionman
And now for the best news! You don’t have to
travel down to Guildford for trampoline park
action, ‘Jump Street’ will be opening in Colchester
in July, keep an eye on www.jumpstreet.co.uk
for updates and with the activity’s phenomenal
popularity there’s no doubt one will be opening in
Suffolk soon.
A whole room full of trampolines?! What’s not
to love! Action Man guarantees you’ll have a
great time, so bound on down to your nearest
trampoline park…
MAY 2015 | ISSUE #31 | PETS
Archie’s
Adventures
INto THE WILD...
Its in our blood… its in our
instincts’… as much as you love us
furry little animals, all of us like to
live on the wild side from time
to time…. cue ‘The Troggs
– Wild Thing’ song.
Anyway, I will tell you why…
did you know that we are
descendent from Wolves? Mental
isn’t it!
All the domestic breeds of dogs
that we are familiar with, from
chihuahuas to pit bulls, are the same
species: Canis lupus familiaris.
Sometimes I feel like a ‘big bad wolf’, especially
when a Great Dane comes trotting up to me.
Although I have little legs, a yap like a parrot and a
bloomin’ handsom coat of fur (even if I do say so
myself) - in my head I can take em’ all on. This must
be my wolfish instinct.
We also like to hang out in packs… as I don’t have
any brothers or sisters living with me, my pack live
a little closer to home, although I always get the
middle of the bed. Uff!
The wild wolf’s strategy of life is to
stay together in family groups
and hunt large prey for the best
chance of survival. Though
unlike the wolf, the domestic
dog’s (that’s me btw) strategy
of life is to stay near our
humans for the best chance
of survival.
This also entails begging for scraps,
being taken for walks and the odd
scratch behind the ear. When I think about
it us ‘domestics’ have it all right compared to those
Wolves. I know what side my bread is buttered!
So next time you see us sprinting up the road,
having a mad half hour or taking on a foe much
bigger than us, think about those poor hungry
wolves in the wild.
TheAtre
Royal
By Nicki Dixon
May is packed month at the Theatre Royal in
Bury St Edmunds, welcoming a legendary
entertainer, a tribute to the ultimate
Euro pop band and helpful elves, not to
mention music, dance and comedy too.
Kicking off the month on 1 May is journalist
Steve Richards who will take his audience on
a behind the scenes look at the closest General
Election for years. Questions being asked on the night
will include Can Cameron hang on as PM? Can Miliband
win? And what will happen to Nick Clegg?
2 May welcomes Big Window Theatre Company with
One Finger, One Thumb for those aged 3 to 5 and their
grown ups to enjoy. Ruby and Peter are searching for
Baby Small, where a puddle becomes an ocean and a
hedge becomes a deep, dark wood in this participatory
theatre for very young children.
Also on May 2 one of the country’s great entertainers
graces the stage.
May) which crams all the Norse myths into one hilarious
show, Thank You For The Music (22 May) paying tribute
to Abba, and The Elves and the Shoemaker (26 to 28
May) which brings to life the classic tale of a down
and out shoemaker whose life is never the same again
once the elves find him and start stitching! The hilarious
LipService bring Withering Looks on 28 May and Jaleo
Flamenco present an evening of vocals, footwork and
guitar on 29 May.
Rounding off May on 30 May is Swinging at the Cotton
Club taking the audience on a step back to 1920s New
York through the doors of Harlem’s hottest nightspot,
The Cotton Club.
Jimmy Tarbuck OBE brings with him a wealth of stories
and anecdotes ranging from being at school with John
Lennon and playing golf with Bing Crosby and is a
master of light entertainment.
Fans of Michael Morpurgo will love the stage adaptation
of I Believe In Unicorns which runs from 5 to 9 May. It
tells the tale of Tomas who doesn’t like books or stories
until the Unicorn Lady comes to town with her magical
tales. Other May highlights include The Barber of Seville,
courtesy of OperaUpClose on 20 May, Norsesome (21
Music
By EMILY BAKER
MAY THE MUSIC BE WITH
YOU...
Bury Fringe Festival’s music section
began as it meant to go on; loud,
passionate and brimming with talent.
On 4th April Washing Machine brought
together ECHO TREE, TRADITION and
KATE JACKSON & THE WRONG MOVES
with post-punk headliners METROPOLIS capping
things off. On 18th April a sensational metal night
was held at the Hunter Club, featuring SAME AS
TOMORROW, BRACKEN, TRYAL OF WITCHES
and had stoner-metal heavyweights MEN OF
MUNGA headlining.
The Fringe Festival’s All Dayer on 2nd May, now
entering its 4th year, promised to be a music
event of epic proportions. Three stages and
no fewer than twenty five acts later and that
promise was fulfilled. The selection of bands on
offer was incredibly broad, ranging from DINGUS
KHAN, VOTER KERNEL and LAPLUCAS on the
Washing Machine stage to THE BARON FOUR,
THE MACHISMO’S and THE STAYCATIONS on
Metropolis
Alex Highton
Chris’s stage. Meanwhile the Toonteen stage
boasted ALEX HIGHTON, RHYS BUTTERWORTH-
BOWMAN and BECCA ROSE among its ranks.
Starting at 13.00 and not finishing until 23.00 it
was a staggering ten hours of impeccable music.
Many thanks to all the organisers and volunteers
involved!
On 22nd May the second Skate Rock and BMX
Pop was held at the Skate Park to raise funds for
improvements to lighting on site.
The atmospheric HORSE PARTY, super heavy
TRYAL OF WITCHES and alternative rock four
piece THE VIRTUES made the ground shake and
entertained a fantastic crowd.
LATITUDE 15
As festival season approaches
we have the latest news from the
Latitude Festival...
Ten years ago Latitude Festival creator Melvin
Benn set out to rewrite the festival rulebook,
showing that music lovers could also be culture
lovers, by creating the UK’s first multi arts
boutique festival set out to challenge the festival
status quo. Today, festival organisers reveal the
music and comedy headliners, plus over 100
other acts and plans for a new era of the festival
including two new areas; swimming in the lake
for the first time in the festival’s history, and hot
tubs where Latitude audiences can soak up the
atmosphere of the idyllic site.
This year First to headline Latitude’s Obelisk
Arena on Friday night is a band close to
Latitude’s heart; Mercury Prize-winning
art-rockers alt-J.
been so memorable. Latitude has always
supported us, and to go from playing the
smaller stages to this means it will be a night
of celebration.” - alt-J
Also headlining are Portishead, Noel Gallagher’s
High Flying Birds, Manic Street Preachers, James
Blake, Seasick Steve, Wild Beasts... The list is
endless.
Plus many more music and arts acts across the
weekend including dance on the waterfront
theatre, literature, film, science, cabaret, art.
This year for the first time ever Latitude will be
partnering with ActionAid a leading international
development charity who support women and
children living in extreme poverty. They work to
help empower women and children to fight
for their own rights and to create lasting change.
“We are hugely excited to return to Latitude
for the third time. Playing there has always
