BE NORMAL.
Sweaty palms are a healthy sign. If you’re not nervous you’re not normal.
BE YOURSELF.
Bring your uniqueness to the group. Don’t attempt to be somebody
you’re not.
BE PREPARED.
Preparation calms nerves. Go through the conversation guide. Watch the
video. Make your own notes in your guide.
LEADERSHIP TRAINING 101
BE CONVERSATIONAL.
Don’t prepare speeches prepare questions. This guide gives plenty of
questions but throw in a few of your own.
BE TEACHABLE.
Ask some of the more trusted people in your group for feedback. Don’t
be defensive, we all need outside eyes.
BE OPEN.
Let the group know a bit of your own wins and losses. There’s no need
to manufacture anything (good or bad). Just be open with your own
experience.
BE A MULTIPLIER.
Look for others in your group who could lead groups of their own. Call
them out. Offer them opportunities. Encourage them to step up and
step out.
BE A DELEGATOR.
Don’t do everything. Ask others to bring food, make coffee, host in their
homes, and even facilitate questions from time to time. It makes for a
better group.
BE RELATIONAL.
Address people by name. Catch up with them for coffee. Do what you
enjoy, just don’t let group time be the only time you connect.
BE PATIENT.
When you ask questions, expect silence. People are thinking. Let them
have this space and resist the temptation to fill the air with noise.
BE OBSERVANT.
Each group is unique. Be thoughtful about what works best for your
group. If your group is large, form sub-groups. If your group is awkward
in the beginning, play music while they arrive. Watch for what’s not
working and make adjustments.
BE PRAYERFUL.
Let this be a spiritual adventure. Leading a group is a great opportunity
to lean into God.
