Blues Booster of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Year<br />
Larry Kurtz<br />
If you’ve ever been to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Orangeville<br />
Blues & Jazz Festival, you probably have some<br />
insight into how much ef<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>t Larry Kurtz sinks<br />
into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues. What you see today is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
success of his visi<strong>on</strong> to bring <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> music he<br />
loves to Orangeville 13 years ago. It was his<br />
visualisati<strong>on</strong> that got <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ball started in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
beginning, and now, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> festival is arguably<br />
<strong>on</strong>e of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> province has to offer.<br />
Bey<strong>on</strong>d that ef<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>t, Larry is also a musician,<br />
dedicated to playing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> harm<strong>on</strong>ica and<br />
singing, and an artist whose paintings often<br />
feature <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues Greats. It just might be<br />
safe to say that Larry Kurtz is living <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues,<br />
in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> best possible way. For this editi<strong>on</strong> of<br />
Notes & Quotes, Larry Kurtz offers insight <strong>on</strong><br />
how <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues found him, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ever-growing<br />
Orangeville Blues & Jazz Festival, and what it<br />
means to be this year’s recipient of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues<br />
Booster of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Year Award.<br />
When talking about his first introducti<strong>on</strong><br />
to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues, Kurtz explains that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> process<br />
was very organic. He says, “I started my<br />
musical journey through <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> church, singing.<br />
It wasn’t a c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al way to get into <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Blues, but it was an intro to per<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ming,<br />
which got me started. I started playing harp<br />
at around 15 years old. My first experience<br />
putting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> two toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r was with my wife<br />
Norma’s bro<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r’s band, Nighttrain. I got up<br />
and played with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m, and it went from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re.”<br />
When discussing what <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues means to<br />
him, Larry says, “Just <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> way I came into it<br />
was very natural. It was a slow realizati<strong>on</strong><br />
that it was a really good fit. There’s something<br />
about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues that keeps me coming back –<br />
not just as a musician, but also as a listener.”<br />
Since that first experience, Kurtz has had<br />
his hat in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> per<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mance ring, c<strong>on</strong>tinuing to<br />
play harp and sing <strong>on</strong> stages that are friendly<br />
to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues. He has even been nominated <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
a Maple Blues Award when his band, Trouble<br />
& Strife, was nominated <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> New Artist/Group<br />
of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Year in 2006. One might think that his<br />
main stage per<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>mances and accolades as<br />
an artist might have quenched his thirst <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues, however, Kurtz has ano<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r visi<strong>on</strong><br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues that could just be his piece<br />
de resistance: The Orangeville Blues & Jazz<br />
Festival. When speaking about how <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
festival first launched 13 years ago, he says<br />
“I first got into starting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues festival by<br />
watching some really great acts in Tor<strong>on</strong>to.<br />
My original idea was to bring <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>m out to<br />
Orangeville so that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y could play here, and<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> people who are here could hear and enjoy<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>se great acts like I was. The first year did<br />
surprisingly well too –<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re was a lineup out<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> door of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first place we had it at. It just<br />
really grew from <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re.”<br />
And grow it did. The Orangeville Blues &<br />
Jazz festival has virtually doubled every year<br />
since its inaugural annual event. By Kurtz’s<br />
own account, he says, “That first year, we had<br />
two thousand people come out. Last year, we<br />
had thirty five thousand come and enjoy <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
festival, so it’s great to see everything come<br />
toge<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r and grow over <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> years. It’s come a<br />
l<strong>on</strong>g way since <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> beginning.”. For <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> first<br />
number of years, Kurtz undertook <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> festival<br />
single-handedly, organizing everything from<br />
thought to finish, and it wasn’t until 2010 that<br />
a board of directors and a lot of volunteers<br />
stood al<strong>on</strong>gside Kurtz and stepped in to make<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> festival a collaborative ef<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>t. Kurtz is<br />
quick to menti<strong>on</strong> that it is that collaborati<strong>on</strong><br />
that has an instrumental hand in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> operati<strong>on</strong><br />
of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> festival today.<br />
“It really is great <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> organizati<strong>on</strong> of<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> festival to have <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> board of directors,<br />
and so much local involvement. Last year, we<br />
even had 120 volunteers who were part of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
festival, and I know <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> support of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> area is<br />
a big help with keeping things organized <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
way it is. It really is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> whole group of people<br />
involved that have helped keep things going<br />
with what we are doing today.” With Kurtz at<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> helm of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> festival, and with Orangeville<br />
helping to steer <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> ship, <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Orangeville<br />
Blues & Jazz Festival shows every sign that it<br />
will c<strong>on</strong>tinue to flourish as an event that brings<br />
Blues fans and top Blues artists to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> area <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
years to come. When asked about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2016<br />
event, Kurtz says” The festival is in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> midst<br />
of assembling itself <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2016. There are lots of<br />
new initiatives that have structured <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> festival<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> success, so I look <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ward to it happening,<br />
and it being a great year.”<br />
The culminati<strong>on</strong> of Kurtz’s ef<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>ts in<br />
bringing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g>efr<strong>on</strong>t have been<br />
noticed by artists, music lovers and industry<br />
professi<strong>on</strong>als alike <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> years. That’s why this<br />
year, Larry Kurtz will be awarded by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Tor<strong>on</strong>to Blues Society with this year's Blues<br />
Booster Award. The coveted Blues Booster<br />
Award is a Maple Blues Award h<strong>on</strong>ouring<br />
outstanding c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Canadian<br />
blues music industry, and is held in high<br />
regard by those who know its meaning and<br />
intenti<strong>on</strong>. The most pressing questi<strong>on</strong> of <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
c<strong>on</strong>versati<strong>on</strong> with Kurtz was to ask how it felt<br />
to be recognized via <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues Booster Award.<br />
Modestly, he says this; “It is very humbling.<br />
This is <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> last reas<strong>on</strong> why I got into doing<br />
this. I never did anything I do with respect to<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> festival to be noticed, but ra<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r to enjoy<br />
it, and share it. This is really great, not just <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
me, but also <str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> people involved, and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
collective Blues community.” Larry’s reacti<strong>on</strong><br />
to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues Booster Award is anticipated<br />
to those who know him, or have worked<br />
al<strong>on</strong>gside him. It is most likely his ability<br />
and willingness to work in tandem with <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />
Blues Community that has opened <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> door<br />
<str<strong>on</strong>g>for</str<strong>on</strong>g> Kurtz to c<strong>on</strong>tribute as plentifully as he has<br />
to date, and c<strong>on</strong>tinues to do today.<br />
A fitting end to <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> c<strong>on</strong>versati<strong>on</strong>, Larry<br />
offers some words of wisdom that coincide<br />
with his mandate in boosting <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues:<br />
“D<strong>on</strong>’t compete – collaborate. D<strong>on</strong>’t let your<br />
ego get in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> way, because <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re is so much<br />
knowledge to gain that can be passed <strong>on</strong><br />
from – and to - o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>rs”.<br />
Larry will be awarded <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Blues Booster<br />
Award at this year’s Maple Blues Award<br />
