Cuts From

The Bottom Up.

Available in 3 sizes, the

Bale Knife uses a serrated

cutting edge to easily cut

through your 4, 5, or 6 foot

silage and hay bales. A

proprietary system grabs

the wrap and bale netting

holding it securely as the

bale is sliced and drops

free keeping bale netting

and wrap out of your

mixers and feeders.

For more information visit

us at the show or online.

Standard on every Contour Cross-Country header

carrier is Horst’s proprietary Road Flex Suspension.

The Road Flex system provides full 4 wheel

independent suspension smoothing out the ride

for your valuable combine heads and further

reduces the stress on equipment and operators

commonly associated when towing ag equipment.

Message from the Show Manager

Working with a progressive Agricultural Society, is something I am

presented by:

extremely proud of, even more so I am honoured to manage the

Western Fair District’s London Farm Show, now in its 78th year,

the largest spring Farm Show in Eastern Canada.

The London Farm Show is just one of WFD’s premiere events,

providing the latest in agriculture technology and innovation, showcased over

three days, with 340 exhibitors representing all facets of the agricultural industry.

Explore hundreds of products, services, experts and equipment demonstrations.

presented by:

You can expect an exceptional customer experience and a breadth of information

and contacts that will allow you to grow your business.

New this year, we are eager for our customers to experience the Dupont/Pioneer Lounge located

in the Metroland Media Agriplex lobby. As well, we are excited to celebrate Ontario Agri-Food

Education’s (OAFE) 25th Anniversary by partnering with them to build agri-food career awareness

within regional high school students attending the show. Look for student friendly exhibitor booths,

providing career facts supported by OAFE educational resources.

Our speaker stage, located in the Metroland Media Agriplex Arena, showcases industry experts who

will provide knowledgeable and articulate comment on the agriculture industry. Back this year to our

speaker stage is Moe Augustino who will share his insights on bean and grain markets in 2016 with

his presentation “Will the Bean Market End the Grain Markets in 2016?.”

Lastly, I’d like to thank our presenting sponsor, Farm Credit Canada, as well as all our valued sponsors

who champion many aspects of the event to make this show a success. Our WFD team hopes you

are impressed with the 2016 Farm Show and find it an informative, must-do event, for those in agribusiness.

Yours in Agriculture,

THE REAL STORY OF AG

We all share the same table.

Pull up a chair.

“ We take pride in knowing we would

feel safe consuming any of the crops

we sell. If we would not use it ourselves,

it does not go to market.”

– Katelyn Duncan, Saskatchewan

“ The natural environment is critical to

farmers – we depend on soil and water

for the production of food. But we also

live on our farms, so it’s essential that

we act as responsible stewards.”

– Doug Chorney, Manitoba

“ The welfare of my animals is one of my

highest priorities. If I don’t give my

cows a high quality of life they won’t

grow up to be great cows.”

– Andrew Campbell, Ontario

Safe food; animal welfare; sustainability; people care deeply

about these things when they make food choices. And all of

us in the agriculture industry care deeply about them too.

But sometimes the general public doesn’t see it that way.

Why? Because, for the most part, we’re not telling them our

story and, too often, someone outside the industry is.

The journey from farm to table is a conversation we need to

make sure we’re a part of. So let’s talk about it, together.

Visit AgMoreThanEver.ca to discover how you can help improve and

create realistic perceptions of Canadian ag.

Trends Impacting Farmers

and Agriculture in 2016

By Joe Dales,

Vice President

Farms.com Ltd.

24

As we start 2016, there seems to be more uncertainty in the future than we have felt the past few years. It is

difficult to watch the news and not become concerned about how the year will unfold. So as we plan for the

year ahead there are a few major factors that should be considered.

1. Farm Business Management and Planning: The importance of planning increases when we are in a

tight margin period, we should reserve time to write down a plan and review the finances for the year.

2. Lower Grain Prices & Lower Livestock Prices: Corn, soybean and wheat futures prices continued to

slide lower compared to last year. Proactive grain marketing and growing high yielding crops are

important to success. Beef and pork producers will have to manage futures prices and lower feed

costs.

3. Lower Canadian Dollar: The rapid drop in the Canadian Dollar US Exchange rate is not all bad as Ontario

farmers should see a stronger grain basis. The negative impact will be higher costs for imported goods

such as farm machinery and fertilizer.

4. Threat of Rising Interest Rates. The U.S. Fed has begun to slowly increase interest rates so farmers need

to consider managing the financial risk higher interest expenses bring.

5. Reducing Costs Using Technology on the Farm. New technology and data management have the

potential to reduce costs so an innovation strategy is always important for the business.

6. Consumers and Political Influence on Farm Regulations and Policies. The Ontario Government’s new

regulations on Neonic seed treatments is an example on why farmers need to continue to spend time

positively promoting agriculture and help educate consumers and politicians where possible.

By Joe Dales,

Farms.com Ltd.

At a recent farmer event I

noticed a younger farmer

using his smart phone

throughout the day during

the presentations, so I

asked him later what he

was doing.

“I was checking my

email, sent a couple of

text messages to my

dad, checked my Twitter

account and looked to see

what the market prices

were doing….” It struck me

how important these small

devices were becoming to

farmers and that we were

just starting to unlock the

potential.

Learning to use the

new phone software

applications or APPS can

make those phones even

more valuable. There are

literally thousands of APPS

(Apple and Android) that

range from weather sites,

weed identification to

more general tools such as

Twitter and Facebook.

To help farmers find

agriculture apps, Farms.

com has created an

extensive online directory

of agri apps which are listed

in categories and with a

description. To visit the

Farms.com App Directory

and find the apps to help

you on your farm go to

http://www.farms.com/

agriculture-apps/

A couple of the popular free

apps include the Farms.com

Used Farm Equipment App,

which is powerful search

engine to help farmers find

a specific piece of used

farm machinery and the

AgCareers.com Job Search

App which allows people

to search the job database,

both are free.

Like most technology, the

device is only as smart as

the user so I plan to keep

learning how I can use my

phone more productively in

our business this year.
