16 EDUCATION Realizing the role played by education in nation building, Dr. B.V. Raju Foundation and Sri Vishnu Educational Society c o n t r i b u t e t o t h e c a u s e o f education through scholarships, infrastructural support and fi n a n c i a l a s s i s t a n c e t o e d u c a t i o n a l i n s t i t u t i o n s . Scholarships, fee concessions and fee waivers enable the deserving students with financial constraints to pursue their career successfully. Students from educational institutions like S.V.K.P. & Dr. K.S. Raju Arts & Science College, Adikavi Nannaya University, Alluri Seva Samithi, Bhimavaram and other t o p p e r s f r o m government schools are a l s o t h e o t h e r beneficiaries. It also r e a c h e s o u t t o t h e marginalized and tribal students. To impart quality education, the society goes beyond the normal a c a d e m i c s . I t w o r k s i n association with Dr. Prasad Jayanti, Professor of Computer Science at Dartmouth College, Ivy League university. It aims at the physical, emotional, and spiritual growth of the students. DR. B. V. RAJU KNOWLEDGE CENTRE In a bid to provide quality primary education to children from rural areas and also hands on experience to students studying in government schools, Chairman Sri K.V. Vishnu Raju established a nodal Centre of excellence, Dr. B. V. Raju Knowledge Centre in Kumudavalli in 2002. The Centre is equipped with a smart class room, a well stocked library, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Computer laboratories in addition to the state-ofthe-art Robotics and English Language Learning laboratories. As of now, 28 schools are utilizing the services of the centre and above one lakh students have benefited from it. A HELPING HAND Acknowledging that Health is a vital precondition for achieving social good, the society and foundation pay attention to health care. They reach out to the people afflicted by the HIV, TB and Leprosy pandemic. The Foundation joins hands with institutions like the FML Leprosy centre, (Srungavriksham West Godavari District) St. Mary's Hospital (Bhimavaram, W.G. Dt) to provide care for such people. Food and medicines are distributed to the patients. In the words of Sr. Rosy, the administrator of St. Mary's Hospital: “SVES renders really valuable service to our people, food, financial support, pensions and education. Great service, indeed!” she adds. “After his death his grandson carries on the tradition. May the Lord shower his blessings on them” is their heartfelt prayer. One cannot miss the sincerity in her words. Feeding the poor is done at regular intervals by the Foundation and financial assistance is provided to the patients suffering from chronic diseases and ailments. Old age pensions are also given by the foundation S i m i l a r l y V i s h n u S c h o o l i s provided with Edu – SAT Satellite Interactive Terminal facility with the support of the Department of Science and Technology. It provides a platform to inculcate scientific temper among the students of the various schools in the nearby areas. Dental camps are held regularly in villages with the help of the Dept. of Periodontics of Vishnu Dental College. The society also gives health education to the school children. Awareness programmes are also conducted on the importance of oral health and general health. The foundation has collaborations with Lions Club of West Godavari District, IDA – Colgate, Rotary club, Vasudha foundation and Sri Kamakshi Devi Trust. ISSUE 10 JAN 2016 ATION F ST ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY LAB Assistive Technology Lab is a unique contribution of Chairman Sri K.V. Vishnu Raju for empowering the differently abled. Under the guidance of Prof. Alan Rux of the University of Massachusetts, students design and develop assistive devices for the differently abled and these devices are given free of cost to the needy on World Disabled Day. The e- stick for the blind, e-coat, liquid level identifier, robotic arms, audio visual aids of learning are some of the devices developed in this lab. Since 2010, SVES has spent over INR 10 million on the ATL initiative. The health initiatives of the society have created a confidence in the public. They know whom to turn to. 17 HOUSING AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT Community Development Supporting the Disadvantaged Abhilash Programme Rs.10,00,000 Sri K.V. Vishnu Raju Padmabhushan Dr.B.V. Raju Foundation has been investing considerably on housing in an attempt to reduce homelessness. Cement worth one crore was donated by our Chairman towards the Indiramma Housing Scheme taken up by the government of Andhra Pradesh for construction of houses. Similarly land worth two crores was distributed for housing to the people of Kumudavalli and to the people dislodged during the road widening on Bhimavaram-Pippara Road. Initiatives that benefit the community at large include providing public amenities, recreational facilities, and providing public work and services. Responding to the call of the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for the development of Smart Villages, Chairman Sri K.V. Vishnu Raju adopted the Kovvada Annavaram village in 2015. The Society focuses on Sanitation, Drinking Water, Health, Education, Rural infrastructure, and Livelihood activities. A detailed plan has been chalked out. SVES aimed at developing Kovvada into a smart village where, by integrating technology, the SPIRITUAL The Foundation has contributed significantly to construct temples, mosques and churches. Munificent finds have been given to Sri Padmavathi Venkateswara Swamy Temple near Town Railway S t a t i o n a t B h i m a v a r a m , S r i P a d m a v a t h i Venkateswara Swamy Temple near Town Railway Station at Bhimavaram, Anjaneya temple at Durgapuram, three Ramalayam temples and Durgadevi temple in Kumudavalli village. The Foundation donated money for the construction and renovation of mosques. Churches have been constructed at Durgapuram and the 7th the ward in Bhimavaram and contributions have also been made to the churches at Kumudavalli, Rayalam, Mogallu and Akiveedu areas for renovation. It would be an inclusive and sustainable development. New initiatives would be taken and the existing ones strengthened. The Society met with the Sarpanch, Vice Sarpanch and village elders and identified their needs. Then it took steps to converge its initiatives and the government schemes with the needs of the village. The establishment of the Reverse Osmosis plant with a cost of Rs 7,00,000 was integrated with the NTR Sujala Sravanthi. WATER SUPPLY The society aims to provide health benefits via water sources also. It provides water to many people who do not have access to water. The foundation spends two and half lakhs a year to supply drinking water to the people of Durgapuram and other areas.
