PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Dear SCI Drayton Valley Chapter Members,
Hello everyone. As a member of our great Chapter I would like to once again thank you for your
support. Because of it we have once again been recognized by SCI on a global scale as the 2014
International Chapter of the Year. This prestigious
award was presented to our chapter Vice-President,
Bill Davie, at the SCI convention in February.
We as a club have been very busy as of late with a few
projects. The NASP provincials is coming to town,
and SCI will have a direct impact on sponsoring and
putting the event together for approximately 1500
Alberta youth. Also, we have been working with
the other Alberta chapters and SCI Canada on a
solution for the Suffield Elk problem that I’m sure
you all are aware of. This will be a huge fight but
one as a hunter and SCI member I’m sure you will
support (more to come on that).
We have a lot of great plans this year for our Call
of The Wild Banquet with some fantastic donations
to bid on. Remember that as a hunter SCI gives
you the only show in Drayton Valley and area that
truly supports hunters and your freedom to hunt.
I thank you again for your support. See you at one
of our great events!
SCI 2015 CONVENTION - LAS VEGAS, NEVADA
The Drayton Valley SCI Chapter was once again
rewarded and recognized in Las Vegas Nevada
at the Annual SCI Hunter’s Convention held
February 4th – 7th. Our Chapter was honored
to receive the SCI International Chapter of
the Year Award for 2014 at the Wednesday
night Chapter Awards event. Current chapter
donors in attendance at the convention were
invited to join us in the celebration as a way
for us to thank them for their contributions in
helping us to achieve this accomplishment.
Paula Mahan, along with Bill and Shannon
Davie acted as your chapter representatives
and met with hunters and outfitters to bring
the hunting experiences you have requested
to our own Drayton Valley SCI Call of The
Wild Banquet. Our Chapter President, Coby
Mahan, unfortunately was unable to attend due
to a severely broken ankle.
The chapters attendance at the annual
convention is of paramount importance as it
has allowed us the opportunity to create lasting
relationships with many outfitters and SCI
Representatives. Our presence at convention,
along with the recognition we have received
over the years has resulted in our chapter being
known and respected on a world wide scale.
2013/2014 CHAPTER ACHIEVEMENTS
Through the 2013/2014 calendar year the SCI – Drayton Valley Chapter experienced great successes in support of SCI’s mission toward conservation, education, humanitarian
endeavors and the protection of hunter’s rights worldwide. One of our most privileged occasions was being awarded the 2013 SCI International Chapter of The Year Award. We
maintained our commitment toward the National Archery in Schools Program within our local schools, as well as our Fishing Dock for seniors residing within care centres and
individuals with disabilities. Our Chapter was also extremely pleased to be involved in the delivery of four Blue Bags this past year to both Cuba and Africa. We also offered another
Youth Hunter Training Course and were privileged to provide financial contributions to a number of local organizations which included the Food Bank, Santas Anonymous, Elementary
School Hot Lunch Program, Evergreen Gun Club, and the CT4DV Campaign. Our conservation projects saw us helping our local SRD Office with the acquisition of a Flir to aide them
in their endeavours in locating night time poachers.
We thank all of our members and supporters for your part in aiding us to achieve these goals!
OUR CHAPTER 2013 - 2014 ACHIEVEMENTS
Through the 2013/2014 year the SCI – Drayton Valley Chapter experienced great successes and attained huge
goals in support of SCI’s mission toward hunting conservation, education and humanitarian endeavors. As a
direct result of our chapter’s efforts, we have been privileged to be recognized on an international scale by SCI
through their annual award program as the 2013 International Chapter of the Year!
We continue our pride and commitment toward our major humanitarian project; our Fishing Dock for seniors
residing within care centres and individuals with disabilities. Our local Board and Chapter members have
contributed in excess of 900 volunteer hours toward the operation and maintenance of the dock. Over the
summer months we were very fortunate to have a variety of user groups visit the dock, with some seniors
groups travelling from two hours away to visit our facility and enjoy the benefits it has to offer. In total we
had over 250+ individuals visit the dock! In addition, we hosted a day of fishing, in conjunction with Cabelas
Edmonton, for a group of underprivileged inner city children from the Crystal Kids Youth Centre. These
children hadn’t experienced the opportunity to go fishing or for some even enjoy a peaceful day in the great
outdoors. It was an amazing and rewarding experience and we look forward to partnering with Cabelas again
in hosting more inner city children in the years to come.
In support of SCIFs missions on a global scale, our Chapter was extremely pleased to be involved in the delivery
of four Blue Bags this past year. One was sent to a children’s school in Cuba by the MacGregor family, one to a
village in Africa through the "Feel the Rush" TV Show, while two others were sent again through our affiliation
with Hearts of Lushoto, which is a local community organization we have partnered with for a number of years.
As part of our commitment to sustain our hunting heritage and providing our youth the opportunity to enjoy
the great outdoors, we facilitated a youth hunter training program in May 2014 within our community of
Drayton Valley free of charge to youth 12 to 17 years of age, with 10 youth participants and (3) volunteers
from our Board of Directors.
The Drayton Valley Chapter of Safari Club International is very proud to continue their support of the National
Archery in Schools Program (NASP). In addition to our initial $40,000 contribution we have continued our
endeavors in support of this beneficial program by way of providing NASP kits to the Warburg and Fullam
schools bringing the number of schools offering the program to ten (10). St. Anthony’s school was also provided
additional bows and gear for their active team! We also partnered with the Brazeau Bowbenders in sponsoring
the Provincial shoot in Edmonton in 2014. This included the provision of SCI Drayton Valley T-shirts to the
youth participating in the shoot from the schools in which we have provided NASP kits to, and the provision
of busing to the event. We also partnered with the Brazeau Bowbenders in facilitating a Youth Fun Shoot in
the summer. Youth from the schools were invited to participate in the fun shoot where they were provided
the opportunity to target shoot and then head out onto the 3D archery range; for many this was their first
experience 3D shooting. The SCI Drayton Valley Chapter also provided grab bags for the event and sponsored
the lunch. We were also a proud supporter of the Alberta Bow Hunters Association Provincial Shoot held in
conjunction with the Brazeau Bowbenders at their range this past summer. Our purpose for being there was
to increase awareness of Safari Club International and the SCI Drayton Valley Chapter.
Over the past year our conservation efforts have included the provision of a Flir for the Drayton Valley SRD
Office to aide them in their endeavors in locating night time poachers. We are also currently working with
Alberta SRD toward the organization of an aerial count of moose populations in WMU 339, which hasn’t been
conducted in fifteen years. In addition, we have recently embarked on an enhanced fishing stock program with
the SCI Red Deer Chapter and Alberta Conservation Association that will see a small pond located south of
Hoadley stocked with approximately 1000 trout to enhance angler operations. Enhancements will also be
made to the walk path to support wheelchair accessibility and dock installation.
Our Chapter took pride in reaching out to our community with helping hands this year as we undertook a
shopping excursion that resulted in us obtaining in excess of $1,500 in needed merchandise and toys for our
local Santa’s Anonymous as they were in dire need of supplies to meet the needs of local families reaching out
for this support. In addition, we also provided a $1,000 monetary donation to our local area Food Bank who
was in desperate need to replenish their shelves during the Christmas season in order to meet the community
demands of underprivileged families. Our Chapter also contributed $5,000 toward the Drayton Valley Health
Services Foundation CT4DV (Cat Scan) Campaign, $1,000 to the Evergreen Gun Club for target maintenance
and assistance with building a new shooting shack, and lastly $1,000 toward the Drayton Valley elementary
schools hot lunch program.
9 |
To you, our members and supporters we thank you for your contributions. It is your commitment to the
Chapter that has contributed to the accomplishments that have been achieved.

NATURE & FUN WITH FAMILY/FRIENDS
Written by Reta Chalifoux
My husband, Real, and I went out every night except
one evening in the month of November. Considering
we went out in September and October for archery
hunting for a bull moose we were never at the right
place at the right time. We had bull moose pictures
on the trail cameras so we were at the right place
just wrong time. One Saturday there was four guys
pushing bush and we saw eight cow moose but not
one bull moose. Oh well, it was still nice being outside
and spending time with friends. We had the same
story for our whitetail bucks, they would not move
until it was really dark except of course the one night
I had to stay late at work. That night there was a trail
camera picture of a nice white tail buck. Oh well, we
have a picture of the same buck after hunting season
so hopefully he makes it through the winter. Have to
leave seed for next year and the anticipation if the
buck will be back and if he has grown any bigger.
Now down to some other property where we hunt.
There were a lot less animals moving on that property,
but the second Saturday of November when we had
a bit of a cold spell I managed to get my mullie doe!
At first I felt like I was herding the does because I
kept shooting just in front of the lead doe as she was
the one I was trying to get. The third bullet she was
270 yards away, I shot again but was not sure if I had
connected. There were quite a few smaller trees and
big rocks. I took out my binoculars and kept glassing
where I figured she should have fallen. To my great
surprise I finally saw an ear moving. Rocks don’t have
ears but she was trying to get up and having trouble
doing so. I knew she was hurt and I needed to finish
the job, so I kept glassing until she moved a bit away
from the large rock. I shot again and the second
shot was the one that made the kill. When we were
butchering her I always check to see where I have
shot the animal, first shot was in her vitals and the
second shot was in the neck.
We went out again on Sunday the same weekend
and this time there was four of us together on our
land. Three of us were sitting in our spots where we
always wait. Real was walking through when all of a
sudden I heard major shooting; five shots, oh my then
three more shots different guns I figured. I just kept
watching my areas where the mules usually run. Oh
boy, I see antlers with no binoculars. The mule buck is
across the coullie; there are a few trees and of course
he goes to take off to the left. It is now or never, so
I shoot. Oh great am I herding and leading to much
again as he turns and goes to the right. I shot again
and he turns to the left one more time. Now I am
thinking I cannot hit the broad side of a barn. I shot
my third shot again I am shooting in the vitals; I try
for clean shots. Amazing he drops, I think, or did he
take off? I glass again where on earth is he! He was
so camoed with the landscape I did not see him until
he lifted his head, just once. I was very happy and to
my great surprise when we butchered him I shot him
three times in the vitals all three bullets were within
about eight inches. He was not the mule I spotted
five years ago that I have nick named, but at least I
managed to get my mule buck!
Lots of time in the country with nature and fun with
my husband and some of our friends.
DOCK VOLUNTEERS
We are patiently awaiting spring and the
reopening of the Drayton Valley SCI Fishing
Dock. Preparations are already being made to
ensure that we can welcome as many guests, if
not more, than last year! In order to meet the
needs of all of our user groups, we are looking
for volunteers to assist us this summer. If you
are interested in contributing some of your
time at the dock, please contact Shannon Davie
at 780-542-6777 as this will help to create a
volunteer list that we can access once the dock
opens. Even if you can only volunteer for one
afternoon this summer we would love to have
you. As an SCI member you can see first hand
the difference your membership has made for
so many community members, and visitors can
have a chance to thank you personally for your
efforts and contributions to Drayton Valley
SUPPORT FOR TANZANIA...
The SCI Drayton Valley Chapter was thrilled to continue ongoing
support in Tanzania through our affiliation with Hearts For Lushoto. The
following are words of appreciation expressed by William Kusaga, the
Chairman of the Lushoto Community Foundation, along with a thank
you card from our local Hearts for Lushoto organization.
“Once again thank you so much and on my behalf please convey my heartfelt
gratitude to the great hearted people of SCI Drayton Valley who made it
possible for us to receive this wonderful gift. The items and especially the balls
were so much appreciated by our kids; these balls are so much sought after
as most of these kids would like to indulge in sports but they lack such sports
gear like these balls, sports shoes, sports wear and the like.
Almost all the items you sent with the exception of the balls, rain boots and
the solar torches were sent to the blind school. This School has 70 kids and
almost 95% of these come from very poor families and are stigmatized by not
only their relations but by the public at large. About 25% of these students are
complete orphans and therefore their needs are limitless. 15 kids are Albinos.
I believe you might have heard the plight of Albinos in this country. Countless
of these Albinos have been killed for ritualistic purposes (some people were
meant to believe and still believe that Albino parts could be used ritually to
bring about wealth). Though measures were taken by the Government to curb
this wave of killings, to date such killings still take place though rarely. The
School setting just like the Blind School offers temporary security to these kids.
Some of the kids also suffer from skin cancer and few like these Albinos are
visually impaired therefore need some sort of medication which isn’t readily
available and affordable. I believe these pictures will speak volumes of the
childrens appreciation for the gifts received.”
SCI PAST PRESIDENT, JOHN WHIPPLE OBITUARY
write up courtesy of Safari Times
SCI Past President John Whipple passed away unexpectedly
in November 2014. He served as SCI’s 34th President
during the 2012-2013 year. The SCI Drayton Valley Chapter
was honoured to have him join us for our 2013 fundraising
banquet.
John was a Past President of the California Orange County
Chapter and was deeply involved in the chapter’s activities
– always a part of the chapter’s leadership, fundraising and
social events.
Just days before his passing, John spent the day with his friends,
supporting the Sportsmen Helping Children’s pheasant hunt.
SCI and the hunting community mourn the Whipple family’s
loss. He is survived by his wife of 50-years, Joan, their three
children and grandchildren.
NASP
In conjunction with AHEIA and The Brazeau Bowbenders the SCI Drayton Valley Chapter is thrilled to be
hosting the 2015 NASP Provincials on April 23, 24, 25, 26 at the Drayton Valley Omniplex. We are expecting
to see 1,000+ youth participants at this event!! Preparations are underway and with an event of this size we
are in need of some volunteers. If you’d have some time to contribute over the course of the four day event,
please call Coby Mahan at 780-542-7864 to express your interest.
The SCI Drayton Valley Chapter has maintained its commitment to the National Archery in Schools Program
within our local and surrounding community schools. This year saw our Chapter contributing additional kits
to schools already participating in the program with the successful expansion of their school programs due
to increased student interest. We also welcomed on board the Entwistle Elementary School!
THE LITTLE POND THAT COULD...
Article Provide by Alberta Conservation Association, Diana Rung, ACA
http://www.ab-conservation.com/go/default/index.cfm/media/in-the-news1/the-little-pond-that-could/
Nuggent Pond is a small trout pond with big
potential. It lies north of Bluffton, alongside Highway
20. Close to the City of Red Deer and the towns
of Rimbey, Bentley, Lacombe, and Drayton Valley,
this site provides recreational opportunities to
many outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can enjoy angling,
walking, picnicking and bird watching.
The pond is bordered by wetland plant species,
mostly rushes and sedges. Rows of shelterbelts
include white spruce, Manitoba maple, and willow, all
offering habitat for various species of songbirds and,
on occasion, upland game birds. Migrating flocks of
waterfowl stop off at Nuggent in the spring and fall
seasons.
Every spring, ACA stocks this pond with 20-cm
rainbow trout, through the Enhanced Fish Stocking
Program. We’re happy to see that ACA studies show
Nuggent Pond receives high angler effort throughout
the fishing season. Our goal here is to provide safe
and enjoyable year-round angling opportunities to a
wide range of Albertans—including those who are
mobility impaired.
This year, we wanted to improve recreational
access for the mobility impaired, enhance the site’s
aesthetics and better protect the wetland habitat.
With the help of a grant received from the Community
Facility Enhancement Program, a generous donation
from the Red Deer and Drayton Valley Chapters
of the Safari Club International, and equipment
provided by Smitty’s Oilfield Services, a long list of
site amenities were upgraded:
• the development of a wheelchair friendly asphalt
path for shore access
• stabilization of a section of eroded shoreline
• construction of a wheelchair accessible outhouse
• installation of a floating wheelchair casting platform
• addition of directional signage and a wildlife-proof
garbage bin
This once diamond in the rough is now shining
brilliantly—and ready for next season's fishing action!
MY BEST DEER TO DATE...
Written by Michelle Kelly
On the morning of November 15th I got in to my stand a few minutes before legal light.
Once I was set up and ready to watch things were dead quiet. What happened next was
exciting as heck!! I caught a glimpse of movement in the willows coming off the creek.
I thought it was a wolf. I got my gun
up and tried to find the critter in my
scope, but what I thought was a wolf
was a good big buck! He came out
of the trees on a hard trot. I got on
him and let out two bleats to stop him.
He slowed and gave me a look noticing
then he had good mass I couldn’t wait
any longer and fired. It was a good
solid hit. I gave the deer 20 minutes
and called my boyfriend to come help
in getting my good deer. Once Lee
showed up he asked me what I got.
I really couldn’t even tell him exactly
what the deer was, how many points it
had. My reply was, “He’s heavy and tall
and mature, 4x4 for sure”. When we
tracked in and saw my deer I was super
excited. That sucker grew even more
as we walked up a 5x7. My best deer to
date. I’m super lucky to have harvested
such a nice bush buck considering the
tuff winter last year!
he is!!! She’s so very proud! Not many
people can say their first buck ever is a
big wall hanger!
Moose Stew
Melt several tbsp. bacon grease in heavy pan. Dip chunks of moose meat in seasoned flour and brown
in bacon grease. Add boiling water to almost cover meat, and simmer 2 ½ to 3 hours. Add in the
following order – 1 medium turnip cut in small cubes, 10-12 potatoes, 6 carrots, 1 sliced onion. Cook
until barely tender, seasoning to taste. Thicken gravy with a little flour mixed with cold water. If
desired, add dumplings during last 15 minutes of cooking (before thickening gravy).
Dumplings:
1 ½ cup flour 1 tsp sugar 2 ¼ tsp. baking powder
3 tbsp margarine ¼ tsp salt about ¼ cup milk
Sift dry ingredients. Cut in shortening. Add milk to make a thick drop
batter. Make sure there is still plenty of liquid in stew. Drop dumpling
mixture on top of meat and vegetables with a tbsp. Cover the pot
slightly and steam for 15 minutes without lifting the cover.
