am Ende seiner Ausbaustufe. „Nachbessern wird

man immer müssen, will man modern bleiben“, stellt

Guzy fest.

10 Hektar großen See.

Since the rise of Bernd Wiesberger to the top 50

in the world, everything has been a little different:

A valuable factor in itself has become even

more precious – time. Bernd Wiesberger has permanently

been in the spotlight within the golf scene and

therefore in great demand for more than one year,

and not only in Austria. His schedule is completely

filled, which hardly leaves any space for spontaneous

This fact makes it even more pleasing for local

golf fans that the top star will be present for a week

during the Lyoness Open presented by Greenfinity.

Autographs – please after the round! – will be given

as well as the numerous celebrity selfies that can

be taken with Bernd.

It should not be a big burden for the Burgenland

native who has risen to the world’s top players that he

again carries the title hopes in 2016. Even with all the

hype surrounding his person. But Bernd may have a

(nearly) perfect record at Diamond Country Club.

Only the slip in the first round in 2015 tarnishes the

score a little. It was also the only score over par

throughout his five appearances in Atzenbrugg. His

analysis after the missed cut was a mixture of contrite

and laid-back: „This kind of thing can happen, but

it shouldn’t.“

We think that in 2016, this will guaranteed not

happen. Bernd has matured even more by experience,

has successfully completed his first major European

team performance at the Eurasia Cup in mid-

January. Next to Ian Poulter and with captain Darren

Clarke, he at least had a taste of the Ryder Cup. Clarke

will lead the European team at the Ryder Cup in

the US this September and has definitely already

written the name Bernd Wiesberger into his notebook.

A victory in Atzenbrugg would probably add

an exclamation mark to his name.

The event

What was born out of necessity in 2011 has, over

the years, evolved into a top event on the European

Tour. Diamond Country Club owner Christian Guzy

remembers: „We had the chance to get the course in

2011 because Fontana quit and I took the risk. The

place was not yet ready, but I saw the potential.“

Today, five years later, the Lyoness Open presented

by Greenfinity has arrived in the Champions

League of European golf and is one of the top 10

events of the tour. This also helps when it comes to

attracting top players to Atzenbrugg. „We don’t have

the option to buy top league players such as they do

it in Abu Dhabi, Qatar or Dubai. We try to score

points with other assets,“ said Ali Al Khaffaf, Managing

Director of the organiser Golf Open Event

GmbH. This was the case with players such as Padraig

Harrington or Graeme McDowell. Miguel Angel

Jimenez, guest star of recent years, was „lured“ by

Christian Guzy with the redesign of the course. Jimenez

is responsible for the conversion of the 8th hole,

the 17th hole during „tour mode“ because the fairways

are reversed for the Lyoness Open. Thus, both

the opulent VIP area as well as the spectators on the

great grandstand behind the green are more closely

involved in the tournament.

The hospitality area has grown along with the

tournament: Catering can withstand any international

comparison, as well as the Boathouse, the digni-

fied VIP area including lounge next to the water

obstacle that makes the final hole so dangerous. A

day at the Lyoness Open in the VIP area is just like a

spa vacation, heightened by top golf and fantastic

The course & the hotel

Over the years, in addition to Bernd Wiesberger’s

athletic performance boost, the course and the facilities

have improved enormously. Christian Guzy has

left no stone unturned and developed the Diamond

Course to a top tour course during the past five years.

The Boathouse, virtually the second clubhouse at

Diamond CC, conquered the hearts of the members

and guests from day one. Development of the course

took more time for technical reasons: Reconstruction

work means restrictions for members and green

fee guests. It was necessary to proceed cautiously. Today,

Christian Guzy has reached the first major milestone

as the course has essentially completed its

expansion phase. „Improvements will always be necessary

in order to stay state-of-the-art,“ he asserts.

The training facilities are stunning and the hotel turned

the golf club into a golf resort – a fact which not

only pleases the stars of the European Tour. From

bed to the tee in three minutes is a convincing benefit

for us hobby golfers as well!

But more than that, if you are at times not in the

mood for championship golf: In addition to the

9-hole Park Course and the Country Course, the

7-hole course, which is currently being expanded to

18 holes, guarantees memorable golf moments

around the central, 10-hectare lake.
