These nine madrigals are settings of poetry by the Bengali writer
Rabindranath Tagore.
These pieces may be performed in any order, and any one or more of them
may be used without the rest of the group. The performing group should
be balanced and very small. A performance by five good, well-matched solo
singers is a considered option. The part marked Quinto can be taken by a
high tenor or low alto, for solo performance, and any combination of these
for choral performance.
Texts
The Lady of the Sea
You bathed in the sea and sat on the pebbled shore with wet untied hair. Your loose yellow dress rested on the damp soil
in curved lines around you. On your uncovered breasts and unadorned body the dawn wrote its fine message in lines of
gold. On my brow there shone a dragon crown. In my right hand I held a bow. I came before you in royal robes and said,
“A stranger I have come to your shore.” Startled, you stood up from your seat of stone and asked, “Why have you come?”
I said, “Do not be afraid, I only want to gather from your garden flowers from my God.” You smiled your consent and
walked by my side. Together we picked the junthee and the jatee and the champak. Together we arranged them in my
prayer bowl. Together we sat in worship of the Lord of dance.
The mist disappeared and in the sky the light shone like the smile of Parvati as she gazed upon Shiva’s face. When the
evening star rose over the mountain peak, you were sitting alone in your room. Your blue skirt was tied round your
waist. Garlands of malati were twined upon your head. Tingling bracelets clung to your wrists. As I walked on my way
I played my flute and said, “I came to your door. Look, here is a guest for you.” Startled, you quickly lit your lamp and
looked at me and asked, “Why have you come?” I replied, “Do not be afraid, I only want to deck your slender limbs with
my jewels.” You looked at me with a smiling face as I hung over your breasts a garland like the crescent moon. I took off
my dragon crown and made it a circlet for your dusky hair. Your maidens came, and lit the lamps, the jewels on your
body sparkled and shone. The night of the spring became sweet and tender.
Your dance and my drum mingled in unison. The full moon smiled on the cloudless sky like Shiva and Shivani. Light
and shade trembled on the waters of the sea.
The Unanswered Question, from Last Writings
Faced with the emergence of new being, the day’s first sun asked the question, “Who art thou?” There was no reply.
Endless years passed on the shores of the western sea in the speechless evening. The day’s last sun asked the final question,
“Who art thou?” There was no reply.
When She Pass’d, from The Gardener
When she passed by me with quick steps, the end of her skirt touched me.
From the unknown island of a heart came a sudden warm breath of spring.
A flutter of a flitting touch brushed me and vanished in a moment, like a torn flower petal blown in the breeze.
It fell upon my heart like a sigh of her body and whisper of her heart.
The Guest, from Gitanjali
On the day when death will knock at thy door what wilt thou offer to him? Oh, I will set before my guest the full vessel
of my life—I will never let him go with empty hands. All the sweet vintage of all my autumn days and summer nights,
all the earnings and gleanings of my busy life will I place before him at the close of my days when death will knock at
my door.
Last Night in the Garden, from Lover’s Gift
Last night in the garden I offered you my youth’s foaming wine. You lifted the cup to your lips, you shut your eyes and
smiled while I raised your veil, unbound your tresses, drawing down upon my breast your face sweet with its silence,
last night when the moon’s dream overflowed the world of slumber.
To-day in the dew-cooled calm of the dawn you are walking to God’s temple, bathed and robed white, with a basketful
of flowers in your hand. I stand aside in the shade under the tree, with my head bent, in the calm of the dawn by the
lonely road to the temple.
Her Night’s Silence, from Fruit-Gathering
I know that at the dim end of some day the sun will bid me its farewell.
Shepherds will play their pipes beneath the banyan trees, and cattle graze on the slope by the river, while my days will
pass into the dark.
This is my prayer, that I may know before I leave why the earth called me to her arms.
Why her night’s silence spoke to me of stars, and her daylight kissed my thoughts into flower.
Before I go may I linger over my last refrain, completing its music, may the lamp be lit to see your face and the wreath
woven to crown you.
I Hold Her Hands, from The Gardener
I hold her hands and press her to my breast.
I try to fill my arms with her loveliness, to plunder her sweet smile with kisses, to drink her dark glances with my eyes.
Ah, but, where is it? Who can strain the blue from the sky?
I try to grasp the beauty, it eludes me, leaving only the body in my hands.
Baffled and weary I come back.
How can the body touch the flower which only the spirit may touch?
The Great Unknown, from Last Writings
There lies the Ocean of Peace.
O Helmsman, sail out to the open sea.
You will be my eternal companion,
Take, O take me in your arms.
The pole star will shine, lighting the path to eternity.
O Lord of deliverance, your forgiveness, your mercy shall be my everlasting sustenance.
On my journey to the shores of eternity.
May the bonds of earth dissolve, the mighty universe take me to her arms, and may I come to know fearlessly the Great
Unknown.
Peace, My Heart, from The Gardener
Peace, my heart, let the time for the parting be sweet.
Let it not be a death but completeness.
Let love melt into memory and pain into songs.
Let the flight through the sky end in the folding of the wings over the nest.
Let the last touch of your hands be gentle like the flower of the night.
Stand still, O Beautiful End, for a moment, and say your last words in silence.
I bow to you and hold up my lamp to light you on your way.
