The young child meets the world with a<br />

tireless motor exploring life through the<br />

channels <strong>of</strong> the senses. Visual, aural <strong>and</strong> tactile<br />

learning are all part <strong>of</strong> the creative process<br />

at CSMA. Preschool children awaken their<br />

creative senses through play-based, h<strong>and</strong>s-on<br />

learning. With a curriculum meeting top national<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ards, classes provide key social <strong>and</strong> developmental stimuli to help your child nurture his or her<br />

natural, inner creativity. Our teachers are top pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who take joy in setting the stage for a<br />

lifelong love <strong>of</strong> learning. This is an experience that you <strong>and</strong> your preschooler should not miss!<br />

• Parent/caregiver & child must attend all classes<br />

together (unless otherwise indicated).<br />

• TUITION: includes $10 (per class) non-refundable<br />

registration fee.<br />

• DISCOUNT: Save $25 with same semester enrollment<br />

<strong>of</strong> same child or siblings in any two or more<br />

We have been providing private <strong>and</strong> group<br />

music instruction in Silicon Valley for over 40<br />

years. At CSMA students <strong>of</strong> all ages, abilities<br />

<strong>and</strong> levels develop skills <strong>and</strong> a love <strong>of</strong> music<br />

through private lessons. Private music lessons<br />

(<strong>of</strong>fered year-round) include instruction in<br />

classical, contemporary, jazz <strong>and</strong> popular styles<br />

CSMA has a large, multi-lingual faculty <strong>of</strong> more than 100 pr<strong>of</strong>essional musicians <strong>and</strong> educators,<br />

ABRSM Exams<br />

CSMA hosts <strong>and</strong> prepares students for the practical<br />

<strong>and</strong> theory examinations <strong>of</strong> the Associated<br />

Board <strong>of</strong> the Royal <strong>School</strong>s <strong>of</strong> <strong>Music</strong> (ABRSM), an<br />

international organization that operates music<br />

examinations in over 90 countries every year <strong>and</strong><br />

is the world’s leading provider <strong>of</strong> graded music<br />

exams & assessments. Faculty select students for<br />

whom the ABRSM curriculum <strong>and</strong> performance<br />

challenge provide appropriate motivation <strong>and</strong><br />

reward. Over 350 students from throughout Silicon<br />

Valley come to CSMA twice a year to perform for<br />

the ABRSM examiner who travels from london.<br />

CSMA <strong>of</strong>fers students a comprehensive curriculum<br />

in preparation for exams. This includes private<br />

lessons & theory & aural training classes. Many <strong>of</strong><br />

our faculty provide instruction in preparation for<br />

the ABRSM Practical Examination. This includes<br />

piece preparation, scales, sight reading & aural<br />

training. Select faculty also prepare students for<br />

the ABRSM Diploma levels.<br />

last year, <strong>of</strong> the 100+ CSMA students who took<br />

either the ABRSM Practical (includes performance<br />

<strong>and</strong> aural training) or Theory Exams, 100% passed.<br />

The world-wide exam pass rate is approximately<br />

87%. Most CSMA students taking the exams<br />

annually pass with Distinction or Merit Distinction.<br />

Merit Scholarships are awarded to students (grade<br />

school through high school) who have shown a<br />

high level <strong>of</strong> commitment, talent <strong>and</strong> achievement<br />

in their CSMA studies <strong>and</strong> who are ready to develop<br />

the additional skills necessary to become high-level<br />

performers, including:<br />

• Training in stage presence <strong>and</strong> etiquette<br />

• Working <strong>and</strong> performing in ensembles with other<br />

Merit Scholars<br />

• Learning how to rehearse effectively<br />

• Building a performance portfolio<br />

These skills are built through ensemble coaching<br />

sessions with CSMA faculty, special workshops for<br />

Merit Scholars <strong>and</strong>, most importantly, performances<br />

at high-pr<strong>of</strong>ile events, both on- <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-site.<br />

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship, students<br />

must be nominated by a faculty member. Students<br />

only become eligible for nomination after one<br />

year <strong>of</strong> continuous CSMA private lessons (or 18<br />

months, if absent during summer). Each year, CSMA<br />

awards approximately 50 Merit Scholarships, with<br />

competitive auditions before a panel <strong>of</strong> judges held<br />

annually in the spring.<br />

Merit Scholarship students <strong>and</strong> their families are<br />

regarded as the ambassadors <strong>of</strong> the CSMA <strong>Music</strong><br />

<strong>School</strong> <strong>and</strong> are role models for all <strong>of</strong> our music<br />

students <strong>and</strong> their families.<br />

Aural Training Classes<br />

CSMA <strong>of</strong>fers additional aural training classes in preparation for the Gr 6, 7 & 8 ABRSM Practical Exams. Concepts<br />

include: sight singing, modulation, melodic memory, chords, cadences, music history, form, analysis.<br />

<strong>Music</strong> Theory Core Curriculum Classes<br />

CSMA <strong>of</strong>fers Core Curriculum classes in music theory from Gr 1-8. Csma private lesson students receive<br />

one Core Curriculum class free per semester (except summer). Classes are open to enrollment by other<br />

students at the tuition prices listed. CSMA has a high success rate in preparing students for all levels <strong>of</strong> the<br />

a space-available basis only <strong>and</strong> are also subject to<br />

instructor/program director approval. Tuition can be<br />

Absences<br />

CSMA is a unique <strong>and</strong> vital community resource <strong>and</strong> one <strong>of</strong> the top 10 schools <strong>of</strong> its kind in the nation. We<br />

<strong>of</strong>fer a spectrum <strong>of</strong> creative endeavors reflecting the diverse interests <strong>of</strong> people throughout the region.<br />

CSMA in the <strong>Community</strong><br />

as part <strong>of</strong> Csma’s commitment to <strong>Arts</strong> for All we<br />

bring the community together at Finn Center, but we<br />

don’t just stop there. our outreach programs bring<br />

education, creativity <strong>and</strong> inspiration to thous<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong><br />

people throughout the region every year.<br />

In-<strong>School</strong> Programs<br />

CSMA serves more than 8,500 children (Gr K-8) annually<br />

through its art4schools <strong>and</strong> music4schools programs<br />

taught by CSMA’s pr<strong>of</strong>essional faculty. Curriculum is<br />

aligned with the California Visual <strong>and</strong> Performing <strong>Arts</strong><br />

(VAPA) state st<strong>and</strong>ards. Weekly, sequential, skill-based<br />

classes <strong>and</strong> concerts at more than 35 schools in Santa<br />

Clara <strong>and</strong> San Mateo Counties coordinate with school<br />

curriculum to ensure that the arts become an integral,<br />

enriching part <strong>of</strong> a child’s education.<br />

After-<strong>School</strong> Programs<br />

CSMA <strong>of</strong>fers weekly after-school art clubs <strong>and</strong> music<br />

instruction at elementary schools. Programs <strong>of</strong>fer<br />

kids the opportunity to create art <strong>and</strong> music in the<br />

familiar surrounding <strong>of</strong> their own school <strong>and</strong> provide<br />

parents a convenient place for children to go when<br />

the school day ends.<br />

Performances & Exhibitions<br />

Faculty <strong>and</strong> students provide free concerts <strong>and</strong><br />

exhibitions at libraries, senior centers, hospitals, fairs<br />

<strong>and</strong> other venues throughout the year. These <strong>of</strong>f-site<br />

programs are another way that CSMA strengthens its<br />

bonds with the community <strong>and</strong> ensures <strong>Arts</strong> for All!<br />

Special Needs Program<br />

As part <strong>of</strong> CSMA’s commitment to <strong>Arts</strong> for All, we<br />

provide classes at Finn Center to students from<br />

Abilities United, Morgan Autism Center, Pacific Autism<br />

Center for Education (PACE) <strong>and</strong> AchieveKids. Taught<br />

by our pr<strong>of</strong>essional faculty, weekly classes provide<br />

h<strong>and</strong>s-on experiences in a supportive environment to<br />

meet the special needs <strong>of</strong> these students.<br />
