LIBRARY PROGRAMS

STARTING IN SEPTEMBER 2012

3 Quick Cards: cardmaking with Wendy Rudyk (for ages 12

and up) Join Wendy for an evening of creativity and fun and

go home with 3 exquisite cards. 2nd Monday of the month at

7 pm $5.00 and pre-registration required.

Globetrotters: Come share your adventures, favourite

destinations, and best travelling tips. 3rd Tuesday of the month at

7 pm. Guest speakers will be announced.

Devon Library Book Club: Facilitated by local author ‘Joan Marie

Galat, the Devon Library Book Club is a great way to meet new

people and discover great books. 4th Thursday of the month at 7 pm.

Cyberlife: Katie Kitschke from the Saffron Centre will be doing a

presentation on cyber life and what you should know about “social

media”. Great presentation to come to with the whole family.

September 12 at 7:00 pm. Call to register.

Gardening: September 19 – Brenda from Cannor Nurseries

“Preparing for the Winter”

September 25 - Gordon Heaps Orchid Culture – Conditions for

Successful Growing. Both programs start at 7 pm. Call to register.

RV Fall Prep: October 30 at 7 pm join licensed RV Tech Gene Wallace

as he gives you advice on preparing your RV for the winter. Call to

register.

Shoulder Boulder Holder: Whether you have boulders or pebbles

this work shop is for you. Cathy Wagner is certified in bra

measuring and will be discussing the different types and shapes of

bras and how you can find the one that is right for you and actually

“fits”. November 6th, 7 pm call the library to register.

Fall Senior Programming

Computers for Senior 65+: These courses consist of 2

components: 3 hours facilitated by Ed Pitts & 1 hour with Holly

Gilmour reviewing the last session. Programs start on Thursday,

October 4 & continue each Thursday until November 22 from

1:00 - 4:00 pm. The reviews are Tuesday afternoons 1:00, Oct. 9

to Nov. 27. Sessions include ~ Operating Systems, Digital

cameras, Photography, Word, & Your Choice. Ed is willing to

accommodate his sessions to your needs & desires.

Participants must dedicate time for the review.

Registration required, space limited.

Heart of Wellness Seminars

Facilitator~ Judy Cooper

Mondays: 9:30 - 11:30 am. Movement is the buzz word and

suggests that the old adage “Use it or lose it”, has significant

influence on the maintenance of our vitality as we age. The

Heart of Wellness Seminars this season will focus on the

various methods to motivate us to maintain our spark longer.

3 Movement Sessions for Heart of Wellness Seminars:

1. Monday, October 22 - Dance Fitness – different dances to

music, no partner needed.

2. Monday, November 26 - Moving Smart – mobility, gait,

balance, reaction and coordination for older adults.

3. Monday, December 17 - Meditation in Motion – slow, flowing

movements combined with breathe to take us on a journey

through the senses. Simple Tai Chi, Yoga and Pilates poses and

stretches. End with a seated meditation of a journey through

the chakras.

Twice weekly Heart of Wellness Workouts:

1. Monday: 10:30 - 11:00 am. Home Support workout.

11:00 - 11:45am. Zookinesis - Tai Chi/Yoga from a chair.

CAREER PLANNING (3 Days)

The Career Planning workshop provides information and activities to assist you in understanding

and applying the Career Planning process. Activities will include: Career Planning Process,

Self-Discovery, Identifying career options and researching, Make a decision, Self-Confidence,

Action planning.

TRANSITIONS (2 Days)

The Transitions workshop is a customized version of the Career Planning workshop outlined

earlier, providing a significant focus on the unique requirements of participants who are

experiencing health problems and/or physical limitations that may impact their

career goals. Activities will include: Career Planning, Health Detours, Occupation

Alternatives, Decision Making, Community Resources.

RESUME & COVER LETTER DEVELOPMENT (1 Day)

The Resume/Cover letter Development workshop assists participants to understand, and be able to apply, the components of a cover

letter and resume. Participants will be provided with electronic and hard copies of their cover letter and resume within two business

days following the workshop.

INTERVIEW TECHNIQUES (1 Day)

The interview techniques workshop will assist participants in gaining competence and confidence in implementing the following

interview techniques: preparation and research, interview formats and process, question styles, intent of questions and appropriate

responses. Activities will include: Purpose of an interview, Interview Types, Interview Process, Coaching, Role-play and feedback.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS (1/2 Day)

Gain basic familiarity with using the computer and Windows to support your education and career goals. This is an interactive

workshop that provides you a half a day of practice using these important components. Get familiar with the computer; learn to use

the mouse, and the keyboard. Create and save documents & folders; Make changes and update files.

WORK SEARCH (1 Day)

The Work Search workshop will introduce a variety of work search techniques to participants who are currently seeking employment.

Work search process, tools and techniques. Participants will receive information on and complete activities about: Resumes, Cover

Letters, References, Traditional Vs. Hidden Job Market, Networking, Contacting Potential Employers, Information Interviews, Thank

You Letters, Application Forms, Personal Support System.

FINANCIAL LITERACY: LEVEL I (1 Day)

Discover power budgeting and SMARTS goal setting. This interactive workshop gets you applying real world situations to theory.

Explore and learn to develop assets in 5 areas essential to financial growth. Learn to budget, track spending & keep more $$$ in your

pocket. Gain a better understanding of how consumerism impacts your spending and saving habits. Learn to manage temptations

and change negative spending habits.

FINANCIAL LITERACY: LEVEL II "CREDIT"(1 Day)

Managing credit is an important skill in reaching our financial goals. Learn about the difference between good credit & bad credit.

Explore how good credit can be easily established, built or repaired if damaged. Understand the 5 C’s of credit and how financial

institutions and employers evaluate you. Use interactive activities to apply the concepts and achieve financial success.

These courses are available at NO CHARGE (Funding provided by Alberta Government)

FALL PROGRAMS

Rhythmic Movement - Children

Arabesque, Parents and Tots

Ages: 2 - 3 years

Arabesque focuses on activities that develop fundamental

movement skills and follows the guidelines set by the Canadian

Sport Centre’s Long-Term Athlete Development Program (LTAD).

Parent and Tot classes focus on learning FUN-damental movements

such as running, jumping, twisting, throwing and catching.

Parents will be actively involved.

Dates: Every Monday, from September 24 – November 26

Time: 9:30 to 10:30 am OR

Dates: Every Thursday, from October 4 – November 22

Time: 3:30 to 4:15 pm

Rainbow Rhythmics

Ages: 3 - 5 years

Each class in Rainbow Rhythmics is themed with a different colour.

Participants will learn fundamental movement skills and progress

through the LTAD’s PRISM program: a series of levels designed to

develop body and apparatus skills in a progressive manner. We’ll

focus on linking play with fundamental movements such as agility,

balance, coordination and speed. For your first class, wear as many

colours as you want!

Dates: Every Monday, from September 24 – November 26

Time: 10:15 to 11:00 am

Rhythmic Movement - Seniors

Vintage/Venus

Ages: Seniors (50+) and full-figured gals

Low impact, total body movement in a friendly, welcoming

environment – let go of your inhibitions and find a sense of

movement, coordination and musicality you never knew you had!

Each class will include a dynamic warm-up, strength and flexibility

exercises, apparatus handling and a cool-down. Participants will

work individually or as a group.

course designed to help those who have experienced a

painful loss, come to terms.

misconceptions about grief,

ST. JOHN AMBULANCE FIRST AID COURSES

EMERGENCY LEVEL - w cpr C Oct 13 (8 am - 6 pm)

STANDARD LEVEL - w cpr A or C Oct 13 & 14 (8 am - 6 pm)

These courses are recognized by Alberta Occupational Health and Safety and exceed the minimum

standards. More time to practice and more modules give participants a great first aid program.

Attendance is limited. Deadline for registration is October 6th.

ST. JOHN AMBULANCE FIRST AID IN CHILD CARE

Nov 3 & 4 (8 am - 6 pm)

Recognized by Alberta Social Services, this comprehensive program gives participants Infant,

Child & Adult CPR and Basic First Aid. This course is 18 hours and exceeds the minimum standards.

Attendance is limited. Deadline for registration is October 27th.

MOMS & DADS need training too!

EMERGENCY FIRST AID LEVEL C Oct 13 (8 am - 6 pm)

With Infant/Child/Adult CPR, training is an 9 hour course, designed to

provide caregivers with the skills to assist an infant or child that is not

breathing, is choking, is in shock, has severe bleeding or has no pulse.

Attendance is limited. Deadline for registrations is October 6th.

HEALTHCARE PROVIDER (HCP)

This is the requisite CPR course for health and allied health

professionals. Includes AED training and skills no longer included

in the CPR courses taught to the public such as rescue breathing,

BVM training and much more. Call for available dates or to book for a group.

WHMIS TRAINING

This is required by OH & S for all employees. Learning the hazardous materials information system

is also valuable for home based owner/operators and anyone who is concerned about contact

with hazardous materials. Call for available dates or to book for a group.

ST. JOHN AMBULANCE BABYSITTER COURSE

for ages 11 - 13 yrs. (9 hours)

March 25 & 26, 2013 Choice of morning or afternoon sessions.

This course is the best training available and is taught by a Registered First Aid in Child Care Instructor.

Attendance is limited to 8 per class. Registration begins February 1st. Deadline for registration is March 15th.
