What is an Apprentice?

An Apprentice is a full time member of staff just like any other member of your staff.
They can be a new member of staff or an existing member of your staff.
Instead of you having to provide and pay for all their training, WS Training provides much of it for
you and organises government funding to pay or part pay for the training.
Your staff achieve nationally recognised qualifications.
You benefit from the investment in your business through government funding and the many free
services provided.
What age does an apprentice have to be?
• Your Apprentice can be any age between 16 and 64 years old.
• To be eligible for funding they must not already have a degree or equivalent however if they do
have a degree or equivalent WS Training has other training programs available which may be
funded.
• Women now make up 55% of apprenticeships and WS Training is proud to say they pioneer to
overcome stereotyping. We have many males in female dominated professions such as Health &
Social Care and females in Engineering and I.T.
How many hours can they work?
• In most cases you must employ your apprentice full time working between 30 to 40 hours a
week.
• For any exceptions to this we have to gain agreement with the governments Skills Funding
Agency,
Who pays them?
They are a full time member of your staff so you pay their wage.
You can pay as much as you like but you must pay the minimum of £3.30 per hour for 16-18
year olds and this is the same for the first year for those aged 19+. After this you must pay the
national minimum wage for their age. You must also pay apprentices for the time they are in
training.
To attract the best employees we recommend you pay more than the minimum wage.
