What is an Apprentice?<br />

An Apprentice is a full time member of staff just like any other member of your staff.<br />

They can be a new member of staff or an existing member of your staff.<br />

Instead of you having to provide and pay for all their training, WS Training provides much of it for<br />

you and organises government funding to pay or part pay for the training.<br />

Your staff achieve nationally recognised qualifications.<br />

You benefit from the investment in your business through government funding and the many free<br />

services provided.<br />

What age does an apprentice have to be?<br />

• Your Apprentice can be any age between 16 and 64 years old.<br />

• To be eligible for funding they must not already have a degree or equivalent however if they do<br />

have a degree or equivalent WS Training has other training programs available which may be<br />

funded.<br />

• Women now make up 55% of apprenticeships and WS Training is proud to say they pioneer to<br />

overcome stereotyping. We have many males in female dominated professions such as Health &<br />

Social Care and females in Engineering and I.T.<br />

How many hours can they work?<br />

• In most cases you must employ your apprentice full time working between 30 to 40 hours a<br />

week.<br />

• For any exceptions to this we have to gain agreement with the governments Skills Funding<br />

Agency,<br />

Who pays them?<br />

They are a full time member of your staff so you pay their wage.<br />

You can pay as much as you like but you must pay the minimum of £3.30 per hour for 16-18<br />

year olds and this is the same for the first year for those aged 19+. After this you must pay the<br />

national minimum wage for their age. You must also pay apprentices for the time they are in<br />

training.<br />

To attract the best employees we recommend you pay more than the minimum wage.<br />
